Mary Ellen Williams Smith

Mary Ellen Williams Smith, 81, of St. Louis, Mo., and formerly of Pulaski, died Thursday, April 21, 1997, in the Brooking Park Nursing Home in St. Louis, Mo.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. at the Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steven R. Emory officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood cemetery.

Born March 7, 1916, in Giles County, she was the daughter of the late Leta Durham Williams and Alfred H. Williams. She was a former member of the Child Study Club, the Thursday Club, the Round Dozen Club, and the D.A.R., a member of the St. Louis Symphony Volunteer Association, and a member of the Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, Mo. She played the organ and sang in Sunday School classes and in the community. She was instrumental in the early years of development of the Mary Montgomery Nursing Home, and in helping obtain a T.V., Christmas presents and regular visitations. She was secretary to J. Frank Wysor, county treasurer for seven years. She was also a Girl Scout leader.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Conway Howard Smith.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Rosemary) Wick of St. Louis, Mo.

The family will welcome friends, after the funeral services April 26, at the Count Pulaski Bed and Breakfast, 821 N. Jefferson Ave., Pulaski.

Minnie Bell Ward

Minnie Bell Ward, 96, of Pulaski died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, in the Highland Manor Nursing Home, Dublin.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 26, at 2 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.

She was born in Ivanhoe on June 10, 1900, and was the daughter of the late Thomas Edward Bell and Viola Wright Bell. She was a retired employee of Virginia Maid Hosiery, Pulaski.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Edward Ward; and a daughter, Nellie Mae Ward.

Survivors include a son, Joseph Ward of Pulaski; a half-sister, Mamie Jackson of Ivanhoe; and two half-brothers, Herbert "Bud" Bell, and Robert Bell, both of Ivanhoe.

The family will receive friends Saturday, April 26, from 1 p.m. until services time at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.

Cora Ethel Dale Brookman

Cora Ethel Dale Brookman, 89, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, April 28, 1997, in the Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home in Marion.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 1, at 11 a.m. from the Draper's Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery, Wythe County, with the Rev. Hal Lewis officiating.

She was born in Carroll County on Oct. 13, 1907, the daughter of the late James T. Dale and Stella Gray Dale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C.T. Brookman; and a son, James Brookman.

Survivors include three daughters, Claudine Goins of Pulaski, Betty Robinson of Pulaski, and Jamie Reedy of Rural Retreat; two sons, Jimmy Damron and Carl Brookman, both of Pigeon Forge, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski.

Edward Meek Hoge

Edward Meek Hoge, 89, of Bland, died Sunday, April 27, 1997, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 30, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Chapel in Bland with Susie Sowers officiating. Interment will follow in the Mechanicsburg cemetery.

He was born in Bland County, the son of the late William H. and Vicie Mustard Hoge and was a member of the Hoge's Chapel Presbyterian Church. He was the owner/operator of the Gulf Service Station in Bland.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgie Hamilton Hoge.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Kenneth (Margaret Ann) Haglund of Isle, Minn., and Mrs. Casey ("Weedie") Hylton of Bland; a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Kay Hoge of Bland; special relatives, Goldie Gordon of Mechanicsburg, and Tootsie Davis of Tazewell; special cousin friend, M.H. Bowen Sr. of Bland; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Steven Harmon Family Fund, P.O. Box 544, Bland, Va. 24315.

Beulah Mae Newberry Lindamood

Beulah Mae Newberry Lindamood, 84, of Route 1, Bland, died Saturday, April 26, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 28, at 2 p.m. at the Bland Community Church with the Rev. Leroy Long and the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. Interment followed in the Temple Hill cemetery in Bland.

She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Walter Stephen and Cynthia Stuart Newberry. She was a member of the Bland Community Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Chloe Lindamood; a daughter, Donna Jo Tuell; and a grandson, Stephen Lindamood.

Survivors include a daughter, Janie L. Horne of Bland; a son, Lanny L. Lindamood of Bland; three grandchildren, Lana L. Hall of Bland, Terry Tuell of Jacksonville, Fla., and Paul Lindamood of Bland; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred N. Kidd, Alma N. Waddle, both of Bland, and Marie N. Doughman of Roanoke; and three brothers, Edgar A. Newberry of Bland, Walter R. Newberry of Wytheville, and Robert G. "Bob" Newberry of Bland.

Frank J. Linkous Jr.

Frank J. "F.J." Linkous Jr., 83, of Speedwell, died Sunday, April 27, 1997, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Ronald Williams.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 30, at 2 p.m. in the Speedwell Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Richard Collins, Rev. Larry Linkous, and Rev. Nelson Linkous. Interment will be in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery. The body will be placed at the church one hour before services.

He was a retired coal operator, where he was owner and operator of Jr. Pocahontas Coal Company in Goodwill, W.Va., and Richlands for many years, retiring to his Oakwood farms in which he was a prominent farmer. He was a member of the Speedwell Baptist Church and the Speedwell United Methodist Church. He also belonged to the 1000 Club of Jerry Falwell's College Church of Lynchburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mellie Linkous; his wife, Nina Linkous; two brothers, Steve Linkous and Kent Linkous; and a grandchild, Debbie Cowan.

Survivors include his wife, Reva June Linkous of Speedwell; four daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Ronald Williams of Speedwell, Ila Groseclose of Christiansburg, Mellie Meadows of Speedwell, and Linda and Steve Crockett of Speedwell; six sons and daughters-in-law, Nelson and Barbara Linkous of Bluewell, W.Va., Jimmy and Brenda Linkous of Speedwell, Larry and Louise Linkous of Lebanon, Bill and Theresa Adams of Speedwell, Frank Linkous and Edna of Speedwell, and Charlie Linkous and Sonya of Sugar Grove; one sister, Louise Helms of Blacksburg; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Arnold and Ovitta Linkous of Christiansburg, Archie and Ethelene Linkous of Lorraine, Ohio, and Elenor Linkous of Wytheville; 26 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren.

Samuel A. Frye

Samuel A. "Sam" Frye, 71, of Wytheville, died Saturday, April 26, 1997, in the Virginia Veterans Care Center, Roanoke.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 29, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home chapel conducted by Rev. Joe Carrico. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Porterfield Frye.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Sammy Lee and Darlene Frye of Wytheville; four brothers, Jim Frye, Leonard Frye, Cloyd Frye, all of Route 3, Wytheville, and Kenneth Frye of Pulaski; three sisters, Bonnie Funk of Route 3, Wytheville, Susie Viars of Pulaski, and Shirley Clark of Max Meadows; two grandchildren, Stephen Frye, and Angela Frye; a step-grandchild, Lisa Wiedl; and several nieces and nephews.

Alfred Elmer Umberger

Alfred Elmer Umberger, 70, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Wytheville, died Thursday, April 17, 1997, in the Tucson Veterans Hospital.

He was a son of the late Amanda Dunnagan Umberger and the late Landon George Umberger Sr. He had been a resident of Tucson, Ariz. for 21 years. He was a veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace French Umberger; and a brother, Landon George Umberger Jr.

Survivors include two sisters, Louella Umberger Stuart of Richmond, and Ruby Umberger Jones of Wytheville; and nieces and nephews.

Tucson Hudgel Swan Funeral Home in Tucson, Ariz. was in charge of the arrangements.

Timothy Wayne Aker

Timothy Wayne Aker, 35, of Rural Retreat died Wednesday, April 30, 1997, in Marion.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3, 1997, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Louise Aker of Rural Retreat; one daughter, Rebecca Louise Aker of Rural Retreat; his father, Carl A. Aker Jr. of Rural Retreat; his mother, Edna Stump of Bradenton Beach, Fla., his grandmother, Mabel Vernon of Marion; one sister, Coritha Juanita Carty of Newport News; two brothers, David Carl Aker of Marion, and James Michael Aker of Rural Retreat; two nieces and one nephew.

Dewey Garland Eversole

Dewey Garland Eversole, 50, of Route 2, Max Meadows, the Fort Chiswell community, died Tuesday, April 29, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 2, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Fogus, Rev. Larry Barnes and Rev. Abe Handy officiating. Entombment followed in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Dublin American Legion Post No. 9 conducted graveside military rites.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Dallas Gleaves and Hallie Burnett Eversole. He was a member of the Austinville Assembly of God Church, and a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam.

He is survived by a daughter, Crystal Dawn Eversole of Pulaski; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Walt Whisman of Edison, N.J., Irene and Jack Mobellini of Wytheville, Evelyn Eversole of Route 2, Max Meadows, and Carolyn and Joe Arnold of Houston, Texas; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Owen G. and Dorothy Eversole of Route 2, Max Meadows, Randolph and Donna Eversole of Route 3, Max Meadows, and Rev. Willard and Earlene Eversole of Route 2, Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.

Cora Lee Johnson Green

Cora Lee Johnson Green, 59, of E. Liberty Street, Wytheville, died Wednesday, April 30, 1997, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at the Franklin Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Price, Rev. Thomas Braxton, Rev. Kenneth Johnson, Rev. Shelly Kyle, and Rev. Angela Hardy officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was a member of the Franklin Street United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday, School Teacher, member of the choir and membership chairman. She was secretary of the Concerned Citizens Network, a member of the Wythe County Democratic Committee, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and an employee of Alco.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary E. Bourne; and a brother, Daniel Johnson. Her husband, Robert Albert Green III, also died April 30, 1997.

Survivors include five sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert A. IV and Abby Green of Wytheville, James William and Tonjua Green of Bowie, Md., John Edward Green of San Diego, Calif., David Andrew Green, and Allen D. Green, both of the home; four grandchildren, Stacey Green, Eric Green, Michael Green, and Kelly Green; a sister, Annie Taylor of Wytheville; a brother, Arthur L. Johnson of Wytheville; two half-sisters, Barbara Ellis, and Gladys Houston, both of Wytheville; and several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 3, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home, or at the residence of Robert A. Green IV at 190 Lahue Drive, Wytheville, or the residence of Annie Taylor at 555 E. Lexington Street, Wytheville, at any time.

Robert Albert Green III

Robert Albert Green III, 59, of E. Liberty Street, Wytheville, died Wednesday, April 30, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at the Franklin Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Price, Rev. Thomas Braxton, Rev. Kenneth Johnson, Rev. Shelly Kyle, and Rev. Angela Hardy officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was a member of the Franklin Street United Methodist Church where he served as trustee, a member of Hairston Memorial Lodge No. 76, a member of the Democratic Committee, and public relations director of the Concerned Citizens Network. He served in the U.S. Army, and was retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Albert Green Sr. and Janana Thornton Green. His wife, Cora Lee Johnson Green, also died April 30, 1997.

He is survived by five sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert A. IV and Abby Green of Wytheville, James William and Tonjua Green of Bowie, Md., John Edward Green of San Diego, Calif., David Andrew Green, and Allen D. Green, both of the home; four grandchildren, Stacey Green, Eric Green, Michael Green, and Kelly Green; and a host of friends.

Julian Kenneth Lineberry, 61, of Austinville died Wednesday, April 30, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 2, at 4 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Merle Woodson and the Rev. Larry Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late William Hobart and Vada Burnett Lineberry.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Katherine Grimes Lineberry of the home; four daughters, Pat Sheets of Virginia Beach, Ovella "Bo" Pelleran of Norfolk, Dinah Sumrell of Chesapeake, and Wanda Marshall of Virginia Beach; two sons, Julian Kenneth Lineberry Jr. of Norfolk, and Michael "Mike" Lineberry of Austinville; a sister, Ovella Jordan of North Carolina; two brothers, Duane Lineberry of Winston Salem, N.C., and Rubin Lineberry of Chesapeake; and 8 grandchildren.
