GAINOUS
Silas Anthony Gainous, age 77, born June 15, 1924, known to friends and family as "Tony", went to be with his Lord and Savior March 2, 2002. A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, March 5, 2 p.m. at Grove Avenue Baptist Church at the intersection of Parham and Ridge Rds. in Henrico County. The family invites friends to a reception in the fellowship hall directly following the service.

GAREAU
Alma T. Gareau, age 90, of Arlington, Va., died Saturday, March 2, 2002 in Arlington. She was born September 25, 1911 in Virginia, a daughter of the late Oswald and Alma Stratton Taylor. She was previously employed as an administrative assistant with International Monetary Fund. Her husband, Charles F. Gareau, preceded her in death. She is survived by three sisters, Betty Anderson, Genetta Price and Corinne Taylor. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 7 at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Richmond at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Arlington Funeral Home, Arlington, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

GIBBONS
Marguerite U. (Peg) Gibbons, 95, of Richmond, formerly of Williamsburg, passed away March 4, 2002. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy C. Burger and husband, Harry; and her niece, Diane Elizabeth Jones, all of Mechanicsville; nephew, Paul M. Burger of Mission Hills, Kan. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bede Catholic Church, Williamsburg, Va., with interment to follow in Williamsburg Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 1503 Michael Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229.

GOVAERTS
Cesar Govaerts, 85, of Richmond, died March 1, 2002 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Edith Govaerts; his son, Jack and daughter-in-law, Carol; his stepdaughters, Gloria Miller and Mary Stanley; son-in-law, Charles Stanley; grandchildren, John and Jamie Lee Govaerts, Logan Vickery and Jennifer Mann; and her friend, Brian Reilly; and sister-in-law, Marjorie Morgan. A special thanks to Dr. R. Mitchell Jr., Dr. R. Mitchell III, Dr. Leon Spiers and Hospice Care. He was a member of Ashland Moose Lodge. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. at their home. Hattie L. Griffith, 84, of Richmond, widow of Kent Griffith, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. Her family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road. HENDERSON
Mrs. Roye Isabelle Howard Henderson of Mechanicsville entered eternal rest Friday, March 1, 2002. She is survived by a son, Loyal E. Henderson Jr. (Mary); a daughter, Mrs. Jane Henderson Fenner (Henry); a sister, Mattie Poteat; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Her remains rest at W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, where the family will receive guests 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 6 at the funeral home at 12 noon. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Mrs. Henderson's name to the East Hanover Rescue Squad.

HESIAK
Casmer Ray Hesiak, 49, died Monday, March 4, 2002. He was a native of Portsmouth and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Casmer began his government career in June of 1970 as a pre-apprentice in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. His distinguished career lasted for over 31½ years. He worked for the electronics shop 67, Combat Systems, and SupShip in the naval shipyard. The majority of his career was with the Federal Aviation Administration. He worked as an FAA radar technician at Oceana NAS in Virginia Beach and as a maintenance control center specialist in Norfolk and Leesburg, Va. At the time of his passing Casmer was airway facilities manager at Richmond's Byrd International Airport. His FAA career was highlighted by many years as a highly regarded union representative for the Professional Airway Systems Specialists (PASS). He was consistently recognized for his outstanding job performance and in 1998 received the Airway Facilities National Honorary Award for Team Achievement. Casmer is survived by his wife, Deborah Chase Hesiak; a daughter, Joli Nicole Hesiak; and a son, Jason Britt Hesiak, all of Chesapeake; mother, Iva J. Hesiak of Portsmouth; sister, Patricia H. Winn of Chesapeake; two nephews, Robert Scott Winn of Portsmouth and John Joseph Winn and his wife, Malisa Winn of Charleston, S.C.; several great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving canine daughter, Carley. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church by Rev. Robert F. Cofield, Jr. and Rev. Dawn-Marie Singleton. Reception to follow in the fellowship hall. Burial will be private. Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4320 Bruce Rd., Chesapeake, Va. 23321 or the charity of your choice.

HOCKETT
Charles Edward Hockett Sr., age 49, died March 3, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife, Christine; devoted son, Charles Jr.; mother, Joanne Riggins; two brothers, Chuck and Cary. Friends and guests will be received by the family from 6 to 9 p.m. on March 5, 2002 at Tuckahoe Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. on March 6 at the church by the Rev. Gary Malone.

HUDSON
Johnnie C. Hudson, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Lugoff, S.C. departed this life, Friday, March 1, 2002 at Henrico Doctors Hospital. He is survived by his devoted wife, Evangelist Mother Nancy P. Hudson; two loving daughters, Mrs. Pamela Hudson-Daniel and Ms. Shauntae C. Hudson; three miracle grandchildren, Paul, Phillip and Bethany Daniel; a kind son-in-law, William Daniel; two devoted brothers, Jone Hudson, Lugoff, S.C. and Deacon Boykin Hudson, Richmond; one devoted sister, Mrs. Mary Wood, Lugoff, S.C.; four brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law, Estelle Branch, Pearline Dailey, Estelle Botts, Lennie Mayfield, Lucy Hudson and Mary Edwards of Ft. Washington, Md.; a host of nieces, devoted, Ms. Willie Williams of New York; a host of nephews, among them a devoted great-nephew, Mr. Robert Williams of Los Angeles, Calif.; goddaughter, Ms. LaKeithsha Franklin; godson, Josh Robinson III; other relatives, friends, neighbors and church family, among them a dedicated friend, Mr. Harry James of Paterson, N.J. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where the family will receive friends Tuesday (today), from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 6, 12 p.m. at Redeem COGIC, 5601 Bryce Lane. Elder George Williams, pastor. Eulogy by Elder Barry L. Winston. Interment in Maury Cemetery. After 11 a.m. Wednesday, remains will rest in the above-named church until hour of service. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the church Wednesday 11:30 a.m.

JACOBS
Alexander S. "Bay" Jacobs of Colonial Heights, aged 81, retired president of Standard James, Inc., died suddenly Sunday, March 3, 2002. He was a former member of Petersburg City Council, 1960 to 1964 and a past chairman of the Petersburg General Hospital Authority. He is survived by his sons, James A. Jacobs and his wife, Isabel of Chesterfield, Richard M. Jacobs and his wife, Brenda of Chester; grandchildren, Stephen M. Jacobs, Ellen L. Jacobs, Jennifer B. Jacobs and Rebecca A. Jacobs; and a sister, Mildred J. Breit of Virginia Beach. A graveside funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 in Brith Achim Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to Appomattox Governors School, P.O. Box 84, Petersburg, Va. 23804. The family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

JACOBS
Eunice C. Jacobs, 87, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2002 at the Petersburg Home for Ladies. Born October 5, 1914 in Sussex County, she was the daughter of the late Lola and Howard Croshaw. She was a member of Highland United Methodist Church in Colonial Heights. She was the widow of Freddie A. Jacobs and was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy C. Jefferson. She is survived by her son, Lloyd and his wife, Barbara Jacobs of Charlottesville; a granddaughter, Cynthia Shiel and her husband, Conor of Richmond; a niece, Joanna Fowler and her husband, Wesley of Jessup, Md.; and numerous cousins. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, Va. with the Rev. David D. Lewis officiating. The funeral procession will leave the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights at 10:30 a.m. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Broadus Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, 1525 Stony Point Rd., Charlottesville, Va. 22911.

KNIGHT
Raymond E. Knight Sr., age 84, died Sunday March 3, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Rose Knight; and his son, Raymond E. Knight Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Grace Lee Knight Phillips; and a grandson, Charles Raymond Knight; three brothers, Charles E. Sr., James W. Sr. and Frank P. Knight Sr. Mr. Knight was a retired employee of William Byrd Press with 45 years of service. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where the family will receive friends Tuesday 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hermitage Samaritan Fund or a charity of your choice.

KRETZ
Westley Charles Kretz Jr., 71, of Mechanicsville, passed away March 3, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his son, David Kretz and his wife, Sharon; two daughters, Pam Andrzejewski and her husband, Ken and Elsa Johnson and her husband, Matt; seven grandchildren, Katherine, Daniel, Joey, Hannah, Rachel, Jack and Sam. Remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002. Interment Hanover Memorial Park.

LONGEST
Willard Hale Longest Sr., 79, of Richmond, died Sunday, March 3, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Virginia Longest; and a sister, Dorothy Caravati. He is survived by a daughter, Laverne Longest of Richmond; three sons, Willard H. Longest Jr. of Macon, Ga., Mark Longest and John Longest, both of St. Stephens Church; three grandsons, Brock, Christopher and Luke Longest; one granddaughter, Lori Mathews; three sisters, Geneva Bowen of Richmond, Marie Simpkins of St. Stephens Church and Lula Kelly of Gloucester; three brothers, F. David Longest and Edmond Longest, both of Mechanicsville, and Melvin Longest of King William. Mr. Longest was a WWII veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division, and retired in 1982 from Sealtest Dairy Products with 36 years of service. He was an active member of Fairfield Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002 at Fairfield Presbyterian Church. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Fairfield Presbyterian Church, 6930 Cold Harbor Rd., Mechanicsville, Va. 23111.

MANZER
Charles Frederick Manzer of Richmond, Va. died March 2, 2002 following a long struggle from complications of juvenile diabetes.. He was born September 16, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Emanuel and Martha Manzer. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Kathleen (Davis) Manzer. He was the father to sons, Robert Charles of Rockford, Ill. and John Frederick of Ashburn, Va.; his three sisters, Maryanne Hanna of Delaware, Ohio, Margaret Perko of Richmond, Va. and Katherine Bauer of Chardon, Ohio; five grandchildren, Erin Frances, Ryan Carl, Laura Michele, David Charles and Michael Gregory. Mr. Manzer was an electrical engineer specializing in instrumentation and control systems with Ondeo (IDI)-Degremont Richmond. A choir member of the Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church and a handyman, he was always willing to help others. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church, 7000 Park Ave. Interment will be in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church.
