James Eldridge Akers Sr.

James Eldridge Akers Sr., 89, of Speedwell, died Monday, May 26, 1997, at his residence.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 29, at 11 a.m. at the Ray cemetery in Pulaski with the Rev. J.P. Hale officiating.

He was born in Max Meadows, the son of the late Lacy and Laura McEldridge Akers.

Survivors include his wife, Gracie Lane Akers; one daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and Tommy Jones of Rural Retreat; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie Akers of the home, John Lane, James and Christy Akers Jr., and Joan Akers, all of Speedwell; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 28, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat is in charge of the arrangements.

Imogene Neff Archer

Imogene Neff Archer, 78, of Wytheville, died Friday, May 23, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 27, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Robert Smith. Interment was in the West End cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late John Jacob and Ethel King Neff.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Donnie Lambert and Richard E. "Dickie" Grubb.

Survivors include her husband, Peyton L. Archer of Wytheville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Will Edwards of Roanoke, and Deloras and Barry Nelms of Corolla, N.C.; a sister, Grace Miller of Virginia Beach; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Lambert of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Olena Faye Hughett Arnold

The Rev. Olena Faye Hughett Arnold, 66, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Sunday, May 25, 1997, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 27, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Fisher and the Rev. Larry Barnes officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery in Wytheville.

She was born in Pulaski County, a daughter of the late Andrew and Alma Dobbins Hughett. She was a member of the Max Meadows Church of God of Prophecy where she served as pastor for 27 years. She served in the ministry for over 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick O. Arnold.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Patsy A. and James S. Duncan, and Maxine A. Ayers, all of Max Meadows; one son, Freddie Leon Arnold of Max Meadows; five grandchildren, Michelle Altizer, Heather Ayers, Doug Ayers Jr., Natasha Arnold, and Cassandra Arnold; two great-grandchildren, Chase Altizer and Mikel Frye; two sisters, Mina Arnold and Mona Arnold, both of Max Meadows; and a brother, Wiley Dobbins of Pulaski.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Dixon

Dorothy Dixon, 95, of Heartland of Kettering Nursing Home, Kettering, Ohio, died Sunday, May 25, 1997.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 29, at 1 p.m. at Tobias Funeral Home, Belmont Chapel, in Dayton, Ohio, with Pastor Robert Bishop officiating. Interment will be in the Woodland cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.

She was the oldest living member of Linden Avenue Baptist Church. She was born in Franklin County, Ky., on May 11, 1902, to Sally and Charles Brawner.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William M. Dixon Sr.; two sons-in-law, Harold O'Cull and Fred Hahn Sr.; four sisters; four brothers; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include two daughters, Marie O'Cull of Dayton, Ohio, and Patricia Hahn of Kettering, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, William M. Jr. and Rita Dixon of Wytheville; a sister, Evelyn Hoagland of Lexington, Ky.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the William M. Sr. and Dorothy Dixon Endowment, Wytheville Community College Education Foundation, or Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Tobias Funeral Home, Belmont Chapel, in Dayton, Ohio, is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Taylor Eversole

Robert Taylor Eversole, 95, of Route 2, Wytheville, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, in the Edgemont Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, May 28, at 11 a.m. in the Davis Family cemetery, Cripple Creek, conducted by Pastor Edward Schaack.

He was the son of the late John P. and Rose Lee Johnson Eversole.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Jonas Eversole.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Margie) Folden of Pulaski, Mrs. Joe (Helen) Etter of Wytheville, Mrs. Donald (Carolyn Alberta) Arnold of Dublin, and Patsy Saferight of Wytheville; two sons, Richard L. Eversole of Wytheville, and J.D. Eversole of Rural Retreat; and 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Wythe County Rescue Squad or to the Davis Family cemetery.

Vivian Hale

Vivian "Diddie" Hale, 75, of Montpelier, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, at the home of her nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. David Martin.

Graveside memorial services will be held Friday, May 30, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by Rev. Dr. Barry Losey.

She was a daughter of the late Emmett M. and Myrtle Coley Hale.

She was preceded in death by five sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Alley of Pulaski, and Ruby Fanning of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Those who wish to do so may make memorials to the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery Fund.

James Lee Henley Sr.

James Lee "Jamie" Henley Sr., 54, of Max Meadows, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 27, at 3 p.m. at the Max Meadows Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Roy Gibson and the Rev. Allen Mahan officiating. Interment followed in the Red Oak cemetery in Ceres.

He was an employee of Pulaski Furniture, and a member of the Max Meadows Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Monroe Joseph Henley; and a sister, Rosie Marshall.

Survivors include his wife, Trula Lambert Henley of Max Meadows; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lorri and Stephen Corder, and Amy and Danny Grubb, all of Max Meadows; a son, James Lee Henley Jr. of Max Meadows; three grandchildren, Karla Corder, Jeremy Corder, and Kayla Grubb; his mother, Mary Duncan Henley of Max Meadows; one brother, Troy Henley of Max Meadows; and two sisters, Marie Marshall of Max Meadows, and Alma Faye Webb of Dublin.

Mary Grubb Rosenbaum

Mary Grubb Rosenbaum, 74, of Marion, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, in the Francis Marion Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m. in the Ebenezer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jim Bangle officiating. Burial followed in the New Bethel cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, but lived in Marion most of her life. She was a member of the Ebenezer Lutheran Church and was co-owner of Rosenbaum T.V.

She is survived by her husband, James Edward Rosenbaum of Marion; two sisters, Lillian Kate Epperley of Rescue, and Warena Bell Morefield of Orlando, Fla.; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Rozelle Grubb of Galax; three sisters-in-law, Gladys Grubb of Great Falls, Mont., Louise Grubb of Pulaski, and Cecille Rosenbaum of Charlotte, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ebenezer Lutheran Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1799, Marion, Va. 24354.

Roger Kenneth Bedwell Jr.

Roger Kenneth Bedwell Jr., 34, of Stuarts Draft, and formerly of Wytheville, died Wednesday, May 28, 1997, in the UVA Hospital.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 31, at 2 p.m. in the West End United Methodist Church in Wytheville.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle A. Bedwell of Stuarts Draft; his father, Roger K. Bedwell Sr. of Wytheville; his mother and step-father, Carleen and William "Red" Harmon of Wytheville; one brother, David Bedwell of Wytheville; two sisters, Brenda Bedwell and Lynda Jones, both of Rural Retreat; and several nieces and nephews.

Bob Coderre

Bob Coderre, 59, of Seffner, Fla., died Tuesday, May 27, 1997, at Columbia Brandon Reg. Med. Center.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, June 1, at 5 p.m. at the American Legion Alafia Post No. 148, Riverview, Fla.

He was born March 7, 1938 in Norwich, Conn. He was a member of Oak Park Baptist Church of Tampa, Fla. He lived in the Tampa, Fla. area since 1973 after coming from Canterbury, Conn. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion Alafia Post No. 148, Riverview, Fla., and the Odd Fellows Lodge, Ivanhoe. He was a construction carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand and Beatrice Cournoyer Coderre.

Survivors include his wife, Greta Coderre of Seffner, Fla.; two sons, Bob Coderre Jr. of Tampa, Fla., and Chris Coderre of Draper; three daughters, Julie Kelley of Tampa, Fla., Lila Coderre-Hinkley of Austinville, and Barbara Allen of Seffner, Fla.; a brother, Ferdinand Coderre of Boston, Mass.; and seven grandchildren, 24 step-grandchildren, and ten step-great-grandchildren.

Stowers Funeral Home, Brandon Chapel, in Brandon, Fla., is in charge of the arrangements.

Stella Rosa Cox

Stella Rosa Cox, 95, of Cripple Creek, died Tuesday, May 27, 1997, in the Radford Community Hospital.

Graveside services and interment were held Thursday, May 29, at 4 p.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran cemetery in Cripple Creek with the Rev. Owen Moore officiating.

She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Alexander and Mattie Lowe Cox.

She is survived by several cousins including two special cousins, Bertha Davis and Margie Crockett, both of Cripple Creek.

Robert Grayson Dillow Sr.

Robert "Bob Andy" Grayson Dillow Sr., 84, of Route 2, Bland, died Tuesday, May 27, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 30, at 2 p.m. at the Bland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. Interment followed in the Bland cemetery.

He was born in Bland County, the son of the late Thomas G. and Margaret Tickle Dillow.

He is survived by his wife, Maggie Parnell Dillow of Bland; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lois G. and Bill Spencer of Colonial Heights, Joyce Ann and Jim Ryan of Wytheville, and Doris and David Dillow of Bland; a son, Robert G. Dillow Jr. of Bland; three sisters, Spence Lindamood of Bastian, Virginia Tickle of Bland, and Willis Chandler of Bastian; and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bland Fire Department and the Bland Rescue Squad.
