Lillie Mae Lawson

Lillie Mae Lawson, 88, of Woodlawn, died Sunday, June 22, 1997, at her home in Woodlawn.

Funeral services were Tuesday, June 24, at 2 p.m. at Vaughan-Guynn Chapel in Galax. Interment was in the West End cemetery in Wytheville with Elder Joe McGrady officiating.

She was born in Wythe County on May 17, 1909, a daughter of the late Carter Braxton Collins and Mary Naomi Galyean Collins.

She is survived by her husband, Roy L. Lawson of Woodlawn; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Mason and Katheryn Lawson of Galax, and R.F. and Zollie Lawson of Woodlawn; a sister, Ida C. Stoots of Sulfork; three grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pipers Gap Rescue Squad.

Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax was in charge of the arrangements.

Alma Surratt Dean Martin

Alma Surratt Dean Martin, 83, of Cary, N.C., died Sunday, June 22, 1997, in the Western Wake Medical Center in North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Bridgeport, Ohio, a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Martin Surratt.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dewey C. Dean.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond J. Martin of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald A. and Mercedes Dean of Cary, N.C., and Anthony L. and Vickie Dean of Apex; three grandchildren and spouse, Dana D. Bright, Gregory A. and Amy Dean, and David C. Dean; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Violet Stoots, Avis King, both of Austinville, and Mary Edwards of Bladenburg, Md.; and several stepchildren and stepgrandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home, or at the residence of her sisters, Violet Stoots and Avis King.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Heart Association, 3901 Computer Dr., St. 110, Raleigh, NC 27609, or the charity of your choice.

Helen Blanche Coburn

Helen Blanche Coburn, 89, of Bastian, Va., died Monday, May 13, 2002, in the North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m. at the Bastian Union Church, Bastian, Va., with the Rev. Lee McIntosh officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, Va.

Born in the Round Bottom section of Bland County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Dora Walker Morehead. She was a member of the Bastian Union Church, Bastian, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Claude Coburn; one sister, Leona Neal; and three brothers, Gilbert Morehead, Byron Morehead and Emory Morehead.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Roberta Coburn of Greensboro, N.C., Vernon and Connie Coburn of Bastian, Va., and Warren and Donna Coburn of Roanoke, Va.; two brothers, Jay Howard Morehead of Petersburg, W.Va., and C.L. Morehead of Millville, Del.; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bland County Rescue Squad and Fire Department or Grapefield Volunteer Fire Department.

Bertie Mae Drumheller Burns

Bertie Mae "Perk" Drumheller Burns, 69, of Staunton, Va., died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at the Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, Va.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 21, at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens with the Rev. Deborah A. Koontz officiating.

She was born May 15, 1933, in Staunton, Va., a daughter of Paul Franklin and Mattie Drumheller. She was a member of Stonewall United Methodist Church. Before retiring, she was manager of Ray's Restaurant.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Hencil A. "Buddy" Burns of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph L. and Vickie Leitch of Staunton, Va., and Ray D. and Anita Leitch of Augusta County, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Angela and David Bratton of Millboro, Va.; one sister, Marguerite Davis of Lawrenceville, Va.; one brother, Tommy Drumheller; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a special friend, Joyce Bosserman; and her pet, "B.J."

Memorial donations may be made to Staunton Augusta Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 2566, Staunton, VA 24402; or to the SPCA, P.O. Box 2014, Staunton, VA 24402.

James Richard Grubb

James Richard Grubb, 68, of Crockett, Va., died Sunday, June 2, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 6, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel, Rural Retreat, Va., with the Rev. Clyde A. King Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Lutheran Church cemetery.

He was a graduate of Rural Retreat High School and was a certified millright and welder.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy P. Miller Grubb; and his father, William Thomas Grubb.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie G. Smith and Richard Wayne "Dickie" Phillippi of Crockett, Va.; one son, Staff Sgt. Wesley Ellis Grubb in the U.S. Army at Ft. Hood, Texas; two grandchildren, Richard Eugene Smith and Brandi Nicole Smith, both of Crockett, Va.; his mother, Lucille Tarter Grubb of Crockett, Va.; two brothers, Wayne Woodrow Grubb and Byron Edward Grubb, both of Crockett, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Thomas M. Jackson Sr.

Thomas M. Jackson Sr., 94, of Austinville, Va., died Sunday, May 19, 2002, in the Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ruthanne Henley and the Rev. Ramon Torres officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, Va., a son of the late Michael Hastwell and Bessie Councilman Jackson. After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1933, he served in Tazewell County, Va., and Pittsylvania County, Va., as an extension agent. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving in the 5th Army 351st Bomber Group. As a member of the Jolly Roger Bomb Squadron, he flew over 50 missions in the South Pacific. He was a lifelong member of Bethany United Methodist Church, serving in various leadership capacities. He was a director of Southwest Virginia Farm Credit for many years, an active member of the Wythe County Democratic Committee, a prominent award-winning dairy farmer and a member of the Wythe County School Board from 1963-1977 serving as chairman for the last 10 years. He was a charter member of the Lead Mines Ruritan Club, having helped establish the club in 1948.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Barbour Jackson; a grandson, Michael Barbour; and a sister, Betty J. Ward.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas M. Jr. and Cynthia J. Jackson of Galax, Va.; two stepsons and one stepdaughter-in-law, J.A. "Sandy" and Joanne Barbour of Roanoke, Va., and Robert H. "Bobby" Barbour of Austinville, Va.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Thomas M. Jackson III, Jenna Katherine Jackson, David Brian and Kellee M. Barbour, and Suzanne B. and Jeffrey K. Wolfe; and one great-granddaughter, Ashlyn Elizabeth Wolfe.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the Bethany cemetery Fund, 4255 Ft. Chiswell Road, Austinville, VA 24312.

Delmer N. Harris

Delmer N. Harris, 68, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Rich Valley, Va., Troutdale, Va., and Lewisburg, W.Va., died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the V.A. Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., following a short illness.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 2, at 2 p.m. at Siloam Gospel Tabernacle, 1771 Ivanhoe Road, Max Meadows, Va., with the Rev. James Porter officiating. Interment will be in Ridgedale cemetery in Rich Valley, Va.

He was born Aug. 6, 1933, at Chatam Hill, Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army with 27 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Henderson and Myrtle Lamie Harris; two sisters, Grace Harris and Frances Pruiett; and two sons, Malcolm Harris and Delmer Neal "Chip" Harris Jr.; and a daughter-in-law, Marie Yonkman.

Survivors include his wife, M. Christine Harris of Tucson, Ariz.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Virgil Porter of Max Meadows, Va., Charlene and Danny Bostic of Glace, W.Va., Lisa and Danny Massie of Tucson, Ariz.; three sons and daughters-in-laws, Dale and Martha Harris of Atkins, Va., Alan and Sara Harris of Crockett, Va., and David and Kelly Yonkman of Troutdale, Va.; 11 grandsons and their spouses, Daniel and Frances Porter of Ivanhoe, Va., Malcom "Bobby" and Ruth Porter of Halls, Tenn., A.J. Harris and Jeffery Harris, both of Wytheville, Va., Jonathan Harris and Ethan Harris, both of Atkins, Va., Samuel Bostic of Glace, W.Va., Levi Massie of Tucson, Ariz., Jordan Yonkman of Troutdale, Va., Doug Watson of Tucson, Ariz., and Randy Watson of Farmington, N.M.; four granddaughters, Summer Harris of Atkins, Va., Marissa Bostic of Glace, W.Va., Kayla Massie of Tucson, Ariz., and Cassandra Graham of Troutdale, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Andrew Porter and Aaron Porter, both of Ivanhoe, Va., Dar-lin Watson, Brandon Watson, and Marish Watson, all of Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and June Harris of Atkins, Va., Roy and Joanne Harris of Dublin, Va., and Russell Harris of Tucson, Ariz.; his former wife, Peggy Harris of Marion, Va.; his dogs, Schwartz, Beauty and Jake; and many nieces and nephews.

Bertha Williams Underwood

Bertha Williams Underwood, 56, of Painter's Woods section of Draper, Va., died Friday, May 17, 2002, at her home.Funeral services will be held Monday, May 20, at 4 p.m. at Draper Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Wilfred Overton officiating. Burial will follow in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery, Wythe County, Va.

She was born May 3, 1946 in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late James E. Williams Sr. and Janie Dix Williams. She was a member of Draper Valley Baptist Church. She was a graduate of George Wythe High School Class of 1964. She was dispatch clerk for Roadway Express in Wytheville, Va., with 10 years of service.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel L. Underwood of Draper, Va.; two sons, Stephen W. Underwood and Brian Keith Underwood, both of Draper, and Brian's friend, Shannon Umberger of Wytheville, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle U. and James Nelson of Draper, Va., and Sharmon U. and Bryan Dalton of Fairlawn, Va.; grandchildren, Dylan S. Underwood, Sierra D. Underwood, Brenna R. Nelson and Merinna C. Emory Junior Hill

Emory Junior Hill, 76, of Austinville, Va., died Monday, May 13, 2002, in the Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital, Pulaski, Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 16, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel, Austinville, Va., with the Rev. RuthAnne Henley and the Rev. Earnest Chinault officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.

He was born in Carroll County, Va., a son of the late Sanders and Lillie Dale Hill. He was a member of Beulah United Methodist Church for more than 30 years, a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and retired from the New Jersey Zinc Company. He was a charter member of the Lead Mines Rescue Squad and a member of the Believers Quartet.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Treva Porter Hill; three sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Debra Hill of Galax, Va., Gary and Dinah Hill of Chester, Va., and Jeff and Jodi Hill of Salem, Va.; four grandchildren, Crystal Hill, Eric Hill, G.L. Hill and Shannon Hill; and one sister, Alice Riggins of Greensboro, N.C.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

David Leon Richmond

David Leon Richmond, 60, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, June 3, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 6, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Hubert Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles G. Richmond. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam era.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Richmond of the home; five sons and daughters-in-law, David Richmond of Marion, Va., Gordon Richmond of Wytheville, Va., Lawrence Richmond, Charles and Michelle Richmond, all of Rural Retreat, Va., and Anthony and Leisa Richmond of Bland, Va.; seven grandchildren, Tristian Richmond, Jacob Richmond, Chad Richmond, Adam Richmond, Zach Richmond, Hannah Richmond, and Christian "Rowdy" Richmond; four sisters, June Jennings of Richmond, Va., Jo Bralley of Speedwell, Va., Nancy Hall and Kathy Dodson, both of Wytheville, Va.; one brother, Mike Dodson of Cripple Creek, Va.; and his mother, Lula Farmer Dodson of Wytheville, Va.

Jerry B. Miller

Jerry B. Miller, 32, of North Ridgeville, Ohio, died Monday, June 9, 1997.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 13, at 1 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home in Berea, Ohio, with Rev. Thomas Matus officiating. Interment was at Columbia cemetery, Columbia Station, Ohio.

Born in Berea, Ohio, he was a security guard at Southwest General Health Center. He was a member of the Field United Methodist Church, the Columbia Game Club and served as an emergency medical technician for Olmsted Township. He served in the U.S. Army from 1982-86.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Ruby Patton and Hunter Armbrister.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Dietrich Miller; two daughters, Nicole Miller and Alexandria Miller; his parents, Dann and Bonnie Miller of Grafton, Ohio, and Jerry B. Six of Wytheville; one brother, Michael Miller of Anchor Point, Alaska; and one sister, Dianne Powell of Jupiter, Fla.
