Departed this life March 3, 2002, Mother, Annie Mae Phifer, formerly of 1611 Fourth Ave. Arrangements by Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Notice of funeral later.

PINNER
Mary Elizabeth Matthews Pinner, 75, passed away Monday, March 4, 2002 in Richmond, Va. She was born December 28, 1926 in Suffolk and was the daughter of the late Susie Peck Matthews and Joseph Roy Matthews. She was a former employee of Lipton Tea Company in Suffolk and a member of Franklin Baptist Church. Mrs. Pinner was loved and will be missed by many. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia P. Bailey and her husband, David of Richmond; her son, James Cecil Pinner and his fiancee, Dianne Bartlett, both of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Anne and James Manning of Smithfield and Frances and Roy Burden of Suffolk; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, James L. Pinner. The graveside service will be held Thursday, March 7, 2002 at 2 p.m. in Southampton Memorial Park on Pretlow Street, Franklin, Va., with the Rev. Roy DeBrand and Rev. Ira D. Hudgins officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wright Funeral Home, 206 W. Fourth Ave., Franklin.

PLUSH
James Herman "Butch" Plush, age 58, of Chesterfield Co., departed this life February 27, 2002. He was the owner of Triangles Restaurant, a legendary establishment in Richmond. He is survived by his devoted wife, Anita A. Plush; three daughters, Dionna D. Plush and Erica J. Plush, both of Richmond and Kristie Plush Thomas (Eugene) of Suwanee, Ga.; one granddaughter, Alexis I. Plush; two stepchildren, Michelle and David Anderton; a host of nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins; numerous friends, colleagues and coworkers. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 North 25th St. Remains will lie in state Wednesday 12 noon at Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 913 North First St., where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Rev. Kenneth E. Dennis officiating. Burial Forest Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends will kindly assemble at the church Wednesday 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Caritas, P.O. SMITH
David L. Smith, 42, of Partlow, died Monday, March 4, 2002 in St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond. Born in Richmond, he was an employee of Rappahannock Electric Cooperative for 23 years. He was also a deacon at County Line Baptist Church in Ruther Glen. Survivors include his wife, Lois H. Smith; a daughter, Kendra Faith Smith of the home; his father, W.L. Smith of Partlow; his mother, Barbara H. Rector of Newport News; a brother, Alan Wade Smith of Partlow; aunts and uncles, Doris and George Warrington of Partlow and Reg and Kathy Exton of Williamsburg; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at 2 p.m. in County Line Baptist Church, with Dr. Fred Skaggs officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Tuesday, 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the County Line Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 3461 Lady Smith Rd., Ruther Glen, Va. 22546.

Departed this life March 1, 2002, Mrs. Julia Johnson Smith of 1405 Carter Street. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Smith Sr. She is survived by two daughters, Bettie Ampay and Joyce Loney; two sons, Irving and Melvin Smith; 17 grandchildren, among them, Michelle Ingram; 32 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins; one son-in-law, Henry Loney; one sister-in-law, Lucille Smith; and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Joseph Jenkins Jr. Funeral Home, 2011 Grayland Ave. Funeral Wednesday, 1 p.m., Riverview Baptist Church, 2600 Idlewood Ave., where remains will lie in state 1 hour prior to funeral time. Rev. Jean Hayes officiating. Interment Riverview Cemetery. Family and friends assemble at the church 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Louise R. Smith, a retired Richmond public school counselor, of Dinwiddie Ave. departed this life at Chippenham Medical Center February 28, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter R. Smith Sr.; a daughter, Rita D. Smith; and her two brothers and four sisters. She is survived by one son, Walter R. Smith Jr.; three grandchildren; one sister, Berthel R. Goode; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, four sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St. Funeral services will be held Wednesday 1 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, 105 East Pilkington St., where remains will lie in state one hour prior to service. Rev. Rufus (Mike) Steed Jr. entered eternal rest on March 2, 2002. He was born November 1, 1937. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 37 years, Parrie Green Steed; two daughters, Cassandra E. and Daphne A. Steed; one brother, Lawrence I. Steed; three aunts, among them one beloved, Mary B. Bryant; three uncles, three sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, among them a devoted niece, Pamela D. Steed; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets, where the family will receive friends Wednesday, March 6, 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 7, 11 a.m., Fifth Baptist Church, 1415 West Cary Street. Dorothy Orell Phelps Strother, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Leland Strother; four daughters, Linda Robinson, Vicky Nunn, Brenda Strother and Tammy Beverley; two sisters, Lois Bass and Judy Stargell; three brothers, Prentiss Phelps Jr., Raymond Phelps and Robert Phelps; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and where services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday. TODD
Mrs. Nell Elizabeth Todd, age 80, of Tanglewood Shores in Bracey, Va., died Monday, March 4, 2002 at her residence after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church. Mrs. Todd is survived by her husband, Colonel William H. "Bill" Todd; her daughter and son-in-law, Cecelia A. and Ernie Pyles of Demorest, Georgia; two nieces, Virginia Rorer and her husband, Charles of Afton, Melanie Ondich and son, Paul of Pulaski; three nephews and their wives, J.E. and Mary DeHart of Afton, Buford and Mercedes DeHart of Roanoke, Robert and Georgia DeHart of Vinton. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Crestview Memorial Park by Rev. Charles Dumaresq, her nephew from Charlottesville. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Memorial Hospice, P.O. Box 90, South Hill, Va. 23970. Bernice M. Tyree, 78, of Charles City, went home to God March 3, 2002. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Katrina. Surviving are husband, Joseph L. Tyree Jr.; daughters, Gabrielle T. Peace (Lloyd), Carolyn T. Hawkins (Blaine), Betsy T. Ferguson (Nathaniel) and Phyllis T. Tabb; grandchildren, Renee P. Carr (Anthony), Thom Peace and Katrina A. Tabb; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at J. Leroy Charity Funeral Home, Charles City. At 12 noon Thursday, Mrs. Tyree will rest at New Vine Baptist Church, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Rev. VAUGHAN
Murle L. Vaughan, 72, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Sunday, March 3, 2002 at his home. He was born in Brunswick County, Va., the son of the late W.L. and Ione Roberts Vaughan. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte C. Vaughan; two sons, Murle L. Vaughan Jr. and his wife, Nita S. Vaughan of Richmond, Va. and Steven Lyle Vaughan of Chevy Chase, Md.; two grandchildren, Murle L. Vaughan III and Abigail L. Vaughan; a brother, Roger W. Vaughan of Winchester, Va. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to Tara Hall Homes for Boys, P.O. Box 995, Georgetown, S.C. 29442-0955. WAYBRIGHT
Donald K. Waybright II of Chesterfield, Va., born on October 4, 1962, died unexpectedly on March 3, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Nyla M. Waybright; children, Lisa and Dustin Waybright, Ria, Ryan, Mikki and Chabi Maharaj; siblings, Jonathan, Tyler, Patrick, Katie; and parents, Donald K. Waybright and Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Dyke. He is also survived by his dogs, Tada and Coalie. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 10 years including Operation Desert Storm. At the time of his death, he was a sergeant E-5 with the Sandston National Guard Artillery Battery, a longtime amateur radio enthusiast, association football coach and active participant in the local chapter of the NRA. He will always be remembered as a loving father and husband, caring brother and friend and an American patriot. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 6. Services private. Leroy M. (Buster) West, 95, of Hanover, widower of Louise G. West, died Monday, March 4, 2002. He is survived by one daughter, Louise W. Tyler and her husband, James E.; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
