Earnie Allen Roberson

Earnie Allen Roberson, 41, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Edward Schaack officiating.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Macie Roberson; a brother, Harold "Dean" Roberson; and a sister, Virginia Ann Merritt.

Survivors include his father, Harold Roberson of Wytheville, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Evelyn Roberson of Wytheville, Va.; a sister, Linda Roberson of the Piney section of Wythe County, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville, Va., is in a charge of the arrangements.

Clinton Rash Taylor

Clinton Rash Taylor of Austinville, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare in Galax, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church, Austinville, Va., with the Rev. Wayne King of Richmond, Va., and the Rev. RuthAnn Henley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was born in Carroll County, Va., a son of the late James Monroe and Martha Lawson Taylor. He was a prominent cattle/horse farmer. He retired after 44 years with Bertha Mineral Company which was a division of New Jersey Zinc Co. He was a member of the New River Trail Wagon Train. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Easter Taylor.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Adeen T. and William Randolph Myers of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Hazel T. and Whitney Keys of Annapolis, Md.; one granddaughter and her husband, Adeen Bell and David Orth-Moore of Los Lunas, N.M.; three great-grandchildren, Cassidy Orth-Moore, Shea Orth-Moore and Jordan Orth-Moore; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax, Va.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bethany cemetery Fund, 4255 Fort Chiswell Road, Austinville, VA 24312.

Melvin Fred Danner

Melvin Fred Danner, 71, of Newport News, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 1997, in Riverside Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. in Peninsula Memorial Park with the Rev. H. Wilson officiating.

He was the son of the late James H. Danner and Peal Thacker Danner. He was a native of Bluefield, W.Va. and had been a Peninsula resident for the past 35 years. He retired in 1991 as a manager with Southland Corp. and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Josephine Danner of Newport News; his daughter, Jo Ann Danner of Newport News; a son, James Danner of Norfolk; and two sisters, Ethel Ayers and Emily D. White, both of Wytheville.

Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News was in charge of the arrangements.

William Gerald Glick

William Gerald Glick, 49, of Atkins, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Church of God on Matson Drive, Marion, with the Rev. Jerry Alley and the Rev. Jonathan King officiating. Interment followed in the Shady Grove cemetery.

He was a native of Jewell Ridge and had been living in Smyth County for over 15 years. He worked as a coal miner and dairyman. He was a member of the Church of God on Matson Drive in Marion.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Glick of Atkins; one son, Shawn Glick of Atkins; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Earl Kennedy, and Fran and Junior Gross, all of War, W.Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Marshall and Ann Glick of Hurley, and Allen and Pearl Glick of Jewell Ridge; his mother-in and father-in-law, Walter and Ivalee White of Bland; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and one great-great-niece.

Barnett's Funeral Home in Marion was in charge of the arrangements.

Ernest B. Suthers

Ernest B. Suthers, 77, of Wytheville, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Smith. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

He was retired from the Appalachian Power Co. with 35 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert E. and Betty Williams Suthers; and three brothers, Carl Lee Suthers, Lloyd W. Suthers and Paul G. Suthers.

Survivors include his wife, Della Irvin Suthers of Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas B. and Dane Crockett Suthers, and Dennis W. And Barbara Dillon Suthers, all of Wytheville; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Peggy S. and Wiley "Sam" James Jr., and Judy S. and Dennis L. Goff, all of Wytheville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles Suthers, Herman and Irene Suthers, and Tom and Melita Suthers, all of Wytheville; a sister, Helen Sue Reardon of Rural Retreat; grandchildren and spouses, Bobby and Teresa James of Bristol, Stephen and Becki James of Brookneal, Darren Suthers of Grundy, Dana Suthers of Crockett, Brian and Miriam Goff of Durham, N.C., Geoff Goff of Charlotte, N.C., Lance Goff, Ally Brooke Goff, Michael and Tena Suthers and Marty Suthers, all of Wytheville; one great-grandchild, Lauren Elizabeth James of Bristol; three sisters-in-law, Phyllis Suthers, Lena Irvin Umberger and Naomi Suthers, all of Wytheville; three brothers-in-law and spouses, Cecil and Louise Irvin, Kenneth and Aileen Irvin, all of Wytheville, and Odell and Janie Irvin of Fairfax; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Grubb Funeral Home Saturday, Nov. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. or at the home at anytime.

Flowers will be welcome, however, those preferring to do so may make memorials to the Wythe County Rescue Squad.

Cecil Walters

Cecil "McCoy" Walters, 61, of Route 5, Wytheville, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, in a veterans hospital in Richmond.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ronald Umberger. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery.

He was retired from Norfolk and Western Railroad and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Worley "Pat" Walters.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Gilbert Walters of Wytheville; a son, Dean Walters of Wytheville; his mother, Bertha U. Walters of Wytheville; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Rassie Wright, Mary and George Bishop, Nancy and David Eversole, all of Wytheville, and Leona and Willard Watson of Walkertown, N.C.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Morris and Carolyn Walters of Wytheville, Sid and Maxine Walters, Herman and Bonnie Walters, all of Walkertown, N.C., and Lucille Walters of Wytheville; a grandson, Nicholas B. Walters of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

The Grubb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Roberta Neese Kirby Covey

Roberta Neese Kirby Covey, 76, of Wytheville, died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Cope and the Rev. Aleen Aker officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Walter R. and Mary C. Archer Neese.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Edwin M. Kirby, and John R. Covey; a brother, James Paul Neese; and two nephews, Jimmy Neese and T.W. Alley.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne Sr. and Darlene Kirby of Max Meadows; a grandson and spouse, Wayne Jr. and Gail Kirby of Max Meadows; a granddaughter, Tonya Kirby of Max Meadows; five great-grandchildren, Wayne Kirby III, Tye Kirby, Skyela Kirby, Sage Kirby, and Suni Kirby; four sisters, Nannie Neese Quesenberry of Cuyahga Falls, Ohio, Laura Neese Alley of Wytheville, Juanita Neese Anderson of Roanoke, and Joan Neese Lawson of Max Meadows; one brother, Walter R. Neese Jr. of Wytheville; and a special cousin, Pauline Archer Nichols of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or Wednesday at her residence.

Paul Eugene Dixon

Paul Eugene Dixon, 79, of Salem, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Chapel, Roanoke, with the Rev. Nelson Harris and the Rev. Rick Via officiating. Interment followed in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens.

He was a member of Ridgewood Baptist Church and was retired from N&W Railway.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rubie S. Dixon.

Survivors include his daughter, Emily D. Hushour of Thomasville, N.C.; a grandson and fiancée, Jeff Hushour and Donna Rimer, both of Blacksburg; Rimer's children, Stephanie and Shannon Broce, both of Blacksburg; two sisters, Lois D. Williams of Roanoke, and Alva D. May of Wytheville; and five nieces, two nephews, and a host of very special friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Salem Rescue Squad.

Bertha Estella Dean Dunford

Bertha Estella Dean Dunford, 78, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. at the Gunton Park Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. George Freeman and the Rev. William Littreal officiating. Interment will follow in the Jones cemetery in Gunton Park. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Wythe County the daughter of the late Robert and Alice Bell Dean and was a member of the Gunton Park Church of God of Prophecy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Sterling Dunford; and a son, Kenneth Robert Dunford.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Mildred and Bill Edwards of Archdale, N.C., Wanda and Johnny Smith of Archdale, N.C., Janice Rogers and Carlyle Freeman of Pulaski, and Minnie and Ricky Freeman of Max Meadows; five sons and daughters-in-law, Lee Roy and Minnie Jane Dunford of Route 3, Wytheville, Thomas and Loretta Dunford of Cripple Creek, James Buford and Brenda Dunford of Max Meadows, Ronnie and Trish Dunford of Trinity, N.C., Gary Dunford and Dottie Hill of Pulaski; and 20 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

John Andrew Gusler

John Andrew Gusler, 92, of White Gate, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Homer D. Sawyer officiating. Burial was in the Walkers Creek cemetery, White Gate.

He was born May 23, 1905, at White Gate, the son of the late James Andrew and Ollie Overstreet Gusler. He was in the C.C. Camp and was retired from Bland Correctional Center after 21 years of service.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Derle Gusler.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Hoilman Gusler of White Gate; two daughters and son-in-law, Alene Gusler of White Gate, and Evelyn and John Dorsa of Nokomis, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Shelbie W. Gusler of White Gate; two grandchildren, Mark Gusler and Robert Wiley; and four great-grandchildren, Molly Gusler, Andrew Gusler, Matt Wiley and Crystal Wiley.

A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate was in charge of the arrangements.

Calvin K. Hilton

Calvin K. "Cotton" Hilton, 73, of Route 1, Rural Retreat, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Blue Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Perkins and the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Marion V.F.W. Post No. 4667 conducting graveside military rites.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Samuel Reed and Anna Kincer Hilton. He was a member of the Blue Springs United Methodist Church in Camp, a retired employee of Southern States Co-op, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of the Marion V.F.W. Post No. 4667 and the Rural Retreat American Legion Post No. 229.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet J. Hilton of the home; one sister, Della Harmon of Rural Retreat; one brother, Bill Hilton of Rural Retreat; his mother-in-law, Catherine James of the home; one sister-in-law and her husband, Hope and Bob Hickenbottom of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Blue Springs cemetery Fund.

Paul McDaniel

Paul McDaniel, 81, of Route 3, Wytheville, the Porter's Crossroads Community, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Full Gospel Bible Mission with the Rev. Hal Lewis officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

He was born in Montgomery County, a son of the late Charlie and Annie Belle Tickle McDaniel. He was retired from the Mobil Chemical Company and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He attended the Full Gospel Mission, was a retired member of the Ivanhoe Fire Department and Lead Mines Rescue Squad.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Porter McDaniel; a daughter, Elsie Elizabeth McDaniel; a grandson, Michael E. McDaniel; two sisters and one brother.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Mildred Annette Talbert of Pulaski, and Sharon and Ernest Sayers of Route 3, Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Janet McDaniel of Route 3, Wytheville, and Edward and Thelma McDaniel of Pulaski; one sister, Louise Baker of Radford; two brothers, the Rev. Charlie McDaniel of Wytheville, and Tommy McDaniel of Dublin; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
