Mae Ovella Sampson

Mae Ovella Sampson, 95, of Max Meadows, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Anchor of Hope Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Vaughn Earl Hartsell and the Rev. Richard Lindamood officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence of her daughter, Virginia Sisk, at any time.

Estelle C. Willard

Estelle C. Willard, 93, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center in Wytheville.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Edward Schaack and the Rev. Harry Howe officiating. Interment will follow in the Kimberlin Lutheran Church cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Crockett, the daughter of the late Sanders and Elizabeth Umbarger Copenhaver. She was a member of the Kimberlin Lutheran Church and was the widow of Dewey R. Willard.

She was preceded in death by one son, Franklin W. Willard.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Luella Willard of Gray, Tenn., and Joan and J.R. Whalen of Rural Retreat; one son and daughter-in-law, Albert R. and Brenda Willard of Wytheville; and ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat is in charge of the arrangements.

Douglas Eugene Adams

Douglas Eugene Adams, 79, of Route 2, Max Meadows, the Sanders Mines Community, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 1 p.m., at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Vaughn Earl Hartsell officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin.

He was born in Wythe County, Aug. 29, 1918, a son of the late George and Etta Kyle Armbrister Adams. He was a member of Galena Presbyterian Church, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Lawson Adams; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald E. Sr. and Brenda Adams of Dublin; a grandson, Donald E. Adams Jr.; a great-grandson, Dustin Matthew Adams; three sisters, Reva Hibbs of Max Meadows, Sadie Jackson, and Doris Patton, both of Pulaski; three brothers, Vernor Adams of Max Meadows, Bill Adams, and Curtis Adams, both of Maryland; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Alderman of Draper, Mr. and Mrs. Bennie T. Lawson, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lawson, all of Pulaski.

Flowers will be appreciated, however, those who prefer may make memorials to the Galena Presbyterian Church.

Shirley Groseclose Bruce

Shirley Groseclose Bruce, 59, of Ceres, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Schoeneman officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church in Ceres.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Watson Bruce; and her father, Herbert Groseclose.

Survivors include three daughters, Eleanor Bruce of Wytheville, Joyce Bruce of Roanoke, and Dixie Booe of Mocksville, N.C.; a son, Patrick Otie Bruce of Ceres; two stepdaughters, Bonnie Lundy of Bastian, and Patsy Muncy of Bland; her mother, Ruth King Groseclose of Ceres; a sister, Marsha G. Penley of Wytheville; and one grandchild, Jacob Booe of Mocksville, N.C.

Newberry Funeral Home in Bland was in charge of the arrangements.

Gilbert Edison Catron

Gilbert Edison Catron, 83, of Wytheville, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Albert V. and Nannie Daugherty Catron. He was a member of the West End United Methodist Church, retired agent for Nationwide Insurance Company, a member of Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82, A.F. & A.M. and a former member of the Order of Oaks.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; and a sister, Ruth C. Moore.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel C. Catron of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, G.W. and Gail Catron of Wytheville; one grandson, Christopher W. Catron of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Hazel C. Williams of Wytheville, and Erma C. Robins of Richmond; and one brother, Garland V. Catron of Wytheville.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the King's Grove United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Doug Brewer, 815 E. Withers Rd., Wytheville, VA 24382, or to the West End United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1030 W. North St., Wytheville, VA 24382.

Lutie Jane Lindamood

Lutie Jane Lindamood, 99, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, in Asbury Center at Birdmont.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Tilley officiating. Interment followed in the Mount Pleasant cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County on June 3, 1898, a daughter of the late James H. and Nannie L. Lindamood. She was formerly of Winston-Salem, N.C., and was employed by N&W Railroad, as a freight traffic clerk for over 46 years.

She is survived by two sisters, Bonnie L. Umberger, and Anne L. Callahan, both of Wytheville; a sister-in-law, Iva J. Lindamood of Austinville; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Mount Pleasant cemetery Fund, c/o Donald Courtney, Route 1, Box 598, Wytheville, VA 24382.

James Lee Padgett

James Lee "Jim" Padgett, 81, of Barren Springs, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, in the Radford Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Owen Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the Gardner cemetery in Carroll County.

He was born in Carroll County, a son of the late William Heath and Rachel Lockie Gardner Padgett. He was a farmer.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Flora Marshall and Guidia Rector; and a brother, Raymond Padgett.

Survivors include four sisters, Zora Crawford of Barren Springs, Gertrude Winesett of Arlington, Mary Ruth and Chuck Menns of Bedford, and Irene and Orbie Martin of Draper; two brothers and sister-in-law, Clarence and Esthel Padgett of Barren Springs, and Earl Padgett of Rural Retreat; and several nieces and nephews.

Elmer Robert McFarland

Elmer Robert McFarland, 63, of Atkins, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 17, at noon at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the Kimberlin Lutheran Church cemetery in Rural Retreat.

He is survived by three daughters, Susan McAllister of Covington, Judy Testerman of Chilhowie, and Jennifer McFarland of Marion; two sons, J.D. McFarland of Chilhowie, and Jamie McFarland of Marion; two sisters, Mary Dell Musser of Max Meadows, and Debbie Parks of Rural Retreat; two brothers, R.D. McFarland, and William Franklin McFarland, both of Rural Retreat; and 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Mae Ovella Collins Sampson

Mae Ovella Collins Sampson, 95, of Max Meadows, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late David Preston and Lelia Cregger Collins and was a member of the Anchor of Hope Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Sampson, one grandchild, two sisters, one brother and four half-sisters and half-brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Sampson Sisk of Max Meadows, and Nancy Sampson Burnett of Galax; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Edward Jr. and Ina Mae Sampson of Washington, Pa., and David Cleveland and Linda Sue Sampson of Hartville, S.C.; and a half-sister, Edith Collins White of Dublin; a half-brother, David Preston Collins of Max Meadows; and 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Mamie Sue Tibbs

Mamie Sue Tibbs, 61, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, at her residence in Rural Retreat.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett's Funeral Chapel, Marion, with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Groseclose.

She was retired from the Marion Head Start Program where she worked as a teacher for 17 years. She graduated from New River Community College in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Lee Tibbs.

Survivors include four sons, James Settles, David Settles, Joseph Settles, all of the home, and Billy Settles of Rural Retreat; six daughters, Lois Tibbs, Betty Havens, Bonnie Hutton, all of Atkins, Mary Aliff, Vicky Settles, and Bonnie Clark, all of Roanoke; one half-brother, James Huff of Bassett; a special friend, Edward Glass; and 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Frank Jack Warden

Frank Jack Warden, 71, of Bastian, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, in Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Dwayne Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Warden cemetery, White Gate.

He was born April 28, 1926, at White Gate, the son of the late Riley and Mary Stephens Warden. He was a member of the Mechanicsburg Ruritan Club and was the Bland County dog warden for about 20 years.

He was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Frankie J. and Alma T. Warden of Pulaski, and Roger and Michelle Warden of Thomasville, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Melinda W. and Robert Tysinger of Star, N.C.; his ex-wife, Pansy Warden of Bland; two brothers, George Warden of Pearisburg, and James Warden of Radford; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Frances Marie Midkiff of Bastian.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate.

Carl Lawrence Wingate

Carl Lawrence Wingate, 73, of Crockett, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 1997, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Marty Saarinen officiating. Entombment followed in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Arthur Lee and Mamie Holbrook Wingate. He was a retired postmaster with 30 years service at Crockett Post Office, a member of American Legion Post No. 229, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II where he served in the South Pacific.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Blanche Wingate; and two brothers, Ernest and Garnett Wingate.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie V. Wingate of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Betty Wingate of Blacksburg, Dennis and Nanetta Wingate of Wytheville, and Chris and Ella Wingate of Sugar Grove; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Dr. Jim Williams of Newport, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Ashley Wingate, Lindsey Williams, Jeffrey Wingate, Adam Williams, and Nathan Aker; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the United Lutheran Church Building Fund, c/o Nancy Pack, Route 2, Box 3, Cripple Creek, VA 24322.
