Nora Belle Stroup

Nora Belle Stroup, 69, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in the West End cemetery, Wytheville.

She was the widow of Lewis Z. Stroup and was retired from Birdmont Health Care Center.

She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Stroup of Wytheville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel "Boone" and Sandra Stroup, Lewis Jr. and Nancy Stroup, all of Wytheville, and David and Carrie Stroup of Detroit, Mich.; one sister, Virginia Harmon of Maryland; two brothers, Thomas Stroupe and Worley Stroupe, both of Wytheville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be appreciated or donations may be made to the Wythe County Rescue Squad or to the charity of your choice.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Herbert Arthur Wright

Herbert Arthur Wright, 84, of Route 2, Austinville, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, in the Vencor Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Full Gospel Bible Mission in Austinville with the Rev. Hal Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late George Porter and Lillie Copeland Wright and attended Full Gospel Bible Mission.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elva B. Wright; one great-granddaughter, Christina Whitt; two brothers and one sister.

Survivors include a daughter, Gaye Cumbee of Route 3, Max Meadows; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harvey and Gayle Wright, and Kenneth D. Wright, all of Austinville; four grandchildren, Robert Daniel Whitt, Jeffrey Wright, Stephanie Spencer and Roy Christopher Cumbee; and two great-grandchildren, Casey Lynn Whitt and Brandon Spencer.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville is in charge of the arrangements.

Irving Nile Akers

Irving Nile Akers, 85, of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in the Edgemont Center in Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 5, at 3 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat with Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge No. 226 conducting Masonic rites, and American Legion Post No. 229 conducting military rites.

He was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, had served in the United State Marine Corps during World War II, three and one half years of which was spent as a Prisoner of War in Japan. Following his discharge from the Marines, he was employed as a lieutenant of the guard force, Radford Army Ammunition Plant where he retired after 25 years of service. He was a 32nd degree Mason, Shriner, Kazim Temple, Roanoke, and a member of Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge No. 226, and American Legion Post No. 229. His civic activities included serving on the Rural Retreat Town Council and being a representative to the Smyth-Wythe Joint Airport Commission for several years. He also was a licensed amateur radio operator.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lacy and Callie Atkins Akers; his wife, Frances Neff Akers; and two brothers, Byron "Chub" and Bill Akers.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Francis Irving "Frank" and Jan Akers of Hillsborough, Calif.; grandchildren, Kimberly Dawn Akers of Seattle, Wash., James Christopher Akers of Cary, N.C., and Blair and John Akers of Hillsborough, Calif.; four stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Jacqueline Kidd and Bill King of Wytheville, June Kidd Wheeler of Atkins, Jean Kidd and Phil Delp of Rural Retreat, Joyce Kidd and Bob Whitmer of Radford; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Claude Lee and Lou Akers of Texas City, Texas, Woodrow and Helen Akers of Wytheville, and Ann Akers of Texas City, Texas.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services or the Grace Lutheran Church.

Dorothy Lois Blacketer Hart

Dorothy Lois Blacketer Hart, 77, of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at her home.

A military graveside service will be held Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at 11 a.m. in the Arlington National cemetery.

She was the widow of retired Army Master Sgt. William Thomas Hart. She served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II where she held the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arlo Milt and Sarah Hazel Pomeroy Blacketer.

Survivors include one daughter, Jeanne G. "Cassell" Hart of Rural Retreat; one son, William Donald Hart of Leesburg; four grandchildren, John Cassell, Marni Cassell, both of Rural Retreat, William F. Hart, and Leigh Ann Miles, both of northern Virginia; and five great-grandchildren, Crystal Hart, Monica Hart, Maniqua Cassell, Marquis Cassell, and Aaron Miles.

Kathryn Chapman Kay

Kathryn Chapman Kay, 76, of Wytheville, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard officiating. Graveside services will be held Thursday, Jan. 8, at 1 p.m. at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Richmond.

She was born in Richmond, the daughter of the late Basil Irvin and Ellen Young Bray Chapman and was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Robert Wade Kay.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha K. Dennis of Stafford; a son, Douglas C. Kay of Rockville, Md.; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 1 p.m. until service time at the Barnett Funeral Home.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Cancer Society, American Paralysis Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

George Amos McMillan Sr.

George Amos McMillan Sr., 85, of Woodlawn, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Blacksburg.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home chapel conducted by Rev. William H. Jackson. Interment was in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was a son of the late Jordan and Jessie Jones McMillan.

He was preceded in death by a son, Herman Wilmer McMillan.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mabel Hawkins McMillan of Blacksburg; two daughters, Rebecca Martin of Stephens City, and Frances Cox of Wytheville; four sons and daughters-in-law, Alden and Polly McMillan of Christiansburg, Thurman G. and Sue McMillan of Roanoke, Bernard and Marlene McMillan of Radford, and George and Lucille McMillan of Salem; four sisters and brother-in-law, Beulah and John Hushour of Richmond, Thelma McMillan of Wytheville, Ruby Crigger, and Margaret Boyd, both of Speedwell; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Marco and Zola McMillan of Crockett, Curtis and Helen McMillan of Spottsylvania, and Julian McMillan of Dublin; a brother-in-law, Steele Fisher of Wytheville; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

J. Elmer Miller

J. Elmer Miller, 91, of North East, Pa., died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at the Ball Pavilion.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at St. Marks Episcopal Church, Erie, Pa. with the Rev. Richard Elberfeld Jr., pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be in Laurel Hill cemetery, Pennsylvania.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1906, in Lander, Pa., to the late Wayne and Hallie Wilcox Miller. He spent most of his married life in Erie, Pa., the past three years in North East, Pa., and has also lived in Warren, Pa., for several years and in Florida. When he lived in Erie, Pa., he was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Erie; in Warren, Pa., he attended Grace United Methodist Church. He formerly worked as a lay operator for Erie Forge and Steel for 47 years and retired in 1968.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia M. Wolcott Miller.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne M. and Alvin Mohnkern or North East, Pa.; four grandchildren, Kenneth Mohnkern of Pittsburgh, Richard Mohnkern of Waterford, Mich., Julie Galati of Cannonburg, Pa., Rebecca Mohnkern of North East, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Brett Mohnkern and Sarah Ann Mohnkern; a sister-in-law, Nell Wolcott of Wytheville; and a host of friends in the Wytheville area.

Memorials may be made to the Ball Pavilion Building Fund, 5416 East Lake Rd., Erie, PA 16511.

Elnora Miller Robertson

Elnora Miller Robertson, 73, of Bland, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Salem Methodist Church in Kimberlin with the Rev. Derry Gray officiating. Interment followed in the Morehead Family cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Miller.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Glorene Miller; a brother, Robert M. Miller; and a grandson, Charles Wesley Robertson.

Survivors include her husband, Emmett W. Robertson Sr. of Bland; two daughters, Ruth Robertson of Bluefield, and Rebecca Via of Bastian; three sons, Emmett W. Robertson Jr. of Charlottesville, James D. Robertson, and Robert E. Robertson, both of Bland; and four grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the Bland County Rescue Squad.

The Newberry Funeral Home in Bland is in charge of the arrangements.

Carrie Etta Rose

Carrie Etta Rose, 90, of Austinville, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at the residence of her daughter in North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Chinault officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Giles Burton Rose.

Survivors include three daughters, Evelyn Combs of Wytheville, Mary Needham of Richmond, and Jewel Nunn of Sophia, N.C.; two sons, Edward Davidson of Amelia, and George Davidson of Austinville; two stepsons, G. Carlton Rose and Burton Rose, both of Austinville; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

Shirley Dalton Rudisill

Shirley Dalton Rudisill, 82, of Route 1, Cana, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at Eldercare Nursing Center of Hillsville.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Moody Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Eddie Honeycutt and the Rev. R.L. McDaniel. Interment followed in the Epworth United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was born in Carroll County, Oct. 14, 1915, a daughter of the late Edd and Gracie Lineback Dalton. She was the widow of James Monroe "Jim" Rudisill, was retired from Quality Mills, and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Nerina Bolt, and Dorothy Edwards; and two brothers, Blaine Dalton and Bryce Dalton.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, James and Lucille Rudisill of Speedwell, David and Sylvia Rudisill of Cana, and Alan Rudisill of Cana; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister Erma Alford of Cana.

Moody Funeral Chapel in Mt. Airy, N.C., was in charge of the arrangements.

Malcolm Robert Sanders

Malcolm Robert Sanders, 79, of Starke, Fla., formerly of Wythe County, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at Hospice House in Gainesville, Fla.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 4, at the First Presbyterian Church in Starke, Fla., with the Rev. Gary Hardesty officiating. Interment followed in Crosby Lake cemetery.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, retired from the U.S. Air Force, and was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 35, A.F. & A.M., Starke, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Hendricks Sanders; and a grandson.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Jack Fried of Hillsdale, N.J., and Carrie and Marc Hunt of Gainesville, Fla.; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, David Peirce Sanders, George and Thelma Sanders, and Lucy Graham Sanders, all of Wytheville; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice House, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32609.
