Francis Dulaney Snapp Sr.

Francis Dulaney Snapp Sr., 91, of Burkes Garden, died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at his home, where he was born Oct. 4, 1906.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 3, at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenneth Conner and Bill Brown officiating. Burial followed at the Central Church cemetery in Burkes Garden.

He was a son of the late Landon and Anna Miller Snapp. He was a member of Mary's Presbyterian Church and was one of the founding elders of the Burkes Garden Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the FFA Board of Tazewell and Buchanan Counties. He was foreman of the experimental farm at VPI, Blacksburg, from 1941-1943. He was a dairy farmer and worked actively farming until the age of 88.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Gregory Snapp; one daughter Louise Snapp St. Clair; one grandson, William Francis St. Clair; two sisters, Lucille Fracker and Reba Ludwick.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Dulaney and Helen Snapp of the home in Burkes Garden; Richard and Ruth Snapp of Burkes Garden, and Phylip and Patricia Snapp of Wytheville; a son-in-law, Jim St. Clair of Tazewell; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Burkes Garden cemetery Association, c/o Mrs. Paul Cox, Box 451, Burkes Gardens, VA 24608.

Silas R. Alexander

Silas R. Alexander, 82, of Rockville, Md., died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at his home.

Graveside service will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. at the LaPhew Family cemetery in Wythe County with the Rev. Dillard Alexander officiating.

He was born in Central, S.C., a son of the late Silas Andrew and Ella Moore Alexander and was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances L. Alexander.

Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Jean DeNinno of Gaithersburg, Md. and Patricia Gjerulff; a son, James Alexander; brothers and sisters, Whit, Otho, Lil and Zell; seven grandchildren, Stephen, Kristin, Joshua, Zachary, Matthew, Jennifer and Adam; and five great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Alexander, Anthony, Stephen Michael and Shawn.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Montgomery Hospice Society, 1450 Research Blvd., Suite 310, Rockville, MD 20850.

William F. Bailey

William Fenton Bailey of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Ivanhoe, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Ortega United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Bruce, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at the Jacksonville Memory Gardens in Jacksonville, Fla. with full military honors conferred at the graveside.

He was a son of the late Howson and Marion Bailey of Lynchburg. He was a graduate of Lynchburg College. He was a retired captain of the U.S. Navy in which he served for over 30 years. Flying dive bombers off the U.S.S. Lexington (CV-16) in World War II, he was wounded and received the Navy Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. He commanded the Navy Attack Squadron, VA-35 at NAS Jacksonville, Fla. in 1961-62. He is a past member of Sertoma in Jacksonville, Fla., and was a member of Ortega United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine June Sisk Bailey, on Dec. 12, 1997.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William F. Jr. and Marcie Bailey of Jupiter, Fla.; one daughter, Alice Lynn B. Schrock of Goode; two grandsons, William F. Bailey III and Bryan Bailey, both of Jupiter, Fla.; and three sisters-in-law, Alice Sisk Hadlock of Lynchburg, Paddy Sisk Ratcliffe of Pulaski and Barbara Sisk of Lynchburg.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to the Ortega United Methodist Church, 4807 Roosevelt Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32210.

Jacksonville Memory Gardens cemetery and Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mabel Ring Brinkley

Mabel Ring Brinkley, 84, of Wytheville, formerly of Summerfield Community near Elk Creek, died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at her residence.

Graveside services were held Thursday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. at Summerfield cemetery with the Rev. Charles Burnett and the Rev. Donald Drake officiating.

She was born Feb. 12, 1913.

She is survived by a daughter, Patsey B. Loucks of Wytheville; three sons, Thomas Brinkley of Orlando, Fla., Joe Brinkley of Richmond and James Brinkley of Crockett; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Summerfield cemetery Fund, c/o Abigal Boyer, 403 Churchview Ln., Fries, VA 24330.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence was in charge of the arrangements.

Harry Filmore Neel

Harry Filmore Neel, 54, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Ceres, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at the residence of his parents.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Signal Hill Memorial cemetery in Hanover.

He was a retired policeman with 33 years service where he served 17 years with the mounted squad. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, John Marshall Lodge No. 2.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Cralle.

Survivors include two daughters, Stacey D. Neel of Fredericksburg and Kirstie L. Neel of Mechanicsville; his parents, Garland B. and Gladys K. Neel of Ceres; and a special friend, Pearl Johnson of Richmond.

Malcolm Harry Riggins

Malcolm Harry Riggins, 70, of Austinville, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Flatwoods Church of God with the Rev. Billy Dean and the Rev. Curtis Dalton officiating. Interment followed in the Bethany cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late James Wesley and Millie Ray Alley Riggins and was a member of the Flatwoods Church of God and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Melvin Riggins; and a grandson, Jason Howard Riggins.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Riggins of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and George Monroe Jr. of Danville, and Denise and James Hillenburg of Austinville; six sons and daughters-in-law, Bill Phillips of Christiansburg, Bo and Kay Riggins, Roy and Anita Riggins, all of Austinville, Michael and Cindy Riggins, of Route 3, Wytheville, Randall and Tammy Riggins of Austinville, and Terry and Linda Riggins of Suffolk; 11 grandchildren, Ben Phillips, Scottie Phillips, Elisha Mabry, Amy Riggins, Ashley Riggins, Cody Riggins, Rachel Riggins, Billy Riggins, Ann Riggins, Quinten Riggins and Dorothy Jo Trent; three great-grandchildren, Chris, Samantha, and Monica; two sisters, Annie Pearl Caviness of Pulaski and Frances May Phillips of Sylvatus; and two brothers, Marvin "Bill" Riggins of Austinville and James Ellis Riggins of Galax.

Katherine H. Taylor

Katherine H. Taylor, 83, of Richmond, formerly of Wythe County, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. at Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, Richmond. Interment will be Sunday, Jan. 11, at 1 p.m. at the West End cemetery, Wytheville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard G. Taylor.

Survivors include her children, Bonnie K. Davis, Dannie B. Taylor, Allen W. Taylor, and Mitzie T. Lawson; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Lottie Mae Archer Aker

Lottie Mae Archer Aker, 90, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joe Carrico officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, daughter of the late John A. and Bessie Archer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar L. Aker; a brother, Robert R. Archer Sr.; two sons, Robert F. Aker and George E. Aker; and two sons-in-law, Harry E. Mabe, and Donald M. Umberger.

Survivors include two daughters, Christine A. Mabe of Tazewell, and Juanita A. Umberger of Wytheville; two granddaughters and spouses, Kay U. and Gary McAlister of Wytheville, and Bernelle E. and Eddie Mabe of Tazewell; eight grandsons and spouses, H. Elwood and Judy Mabe of Tazewell, Barry M. and Sharon Umberger, Terry L. and Connie Umberger, Eddy K. and Joy Umberger, Ricky F. and Gabey Umberger, Jody K. and Lisa Umberger, all of Wytheville, Gregory F. and Peggy Aker of Charlotte, N.C., and Kevin T. Aker of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters-in-law, Martha C. Aker, and Shirley G. Aker, both of Wytheville; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Juanita Williams Carmichael

Juanita Williams Carmichael, 92, of Wytheville, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Frank Bauman officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

She was born in South Carolina, daughter of the late Arthur and Roberta Moody Williams. She was a member of the First Christian Church, and a retired sales clerk with Crest.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Gore Carmichael.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary C. Potter of Long Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren, Darlene Alderman of Wytheville, Durward Potter of Charlottesville, Michelle Potter, and Michael Ann Potter, both of Long Beach, Calif.; one great-granddaughter, Deanna Alderman of Wytheville; a sister, Mildred W. Thomas of Wytheville; a niece and spouse, Carol and Charlie Green and family of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a nephew and spouse, Ernie and Pam Thomas of Massachusetts.

Bonnie Marie Cooley

Bonnie Marie Cooley, 92, of Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Rural Retreat, a daughter of the late Thomas Franklin and Berethea Litz Steffey. She was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat, and had lived in Washington, D.C., for 30 years before returning home to Rural Retreat. She was a retired clerk for the federal government.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer B. Cooley.

Survivors include one sister, Dottie S. Von Harder of Rural Retreat; two nieces, Jean Hall of Fairfax, and Frances Anderson of Silver Spring, Md.; and great-nieces and nephews, Stephanie Ottman of Silver Spring, Md., Tom Ottman of Gaithersburg, Md., Gary Hall of Woodbridge, and Sherry Howcroft of Dumfries.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services.

Mary D. Gordon

Mary D. Gordon, 80, of Chesapeake, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Alley officiating. Interment will follow in the Black Lick cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Rural Retreat, a daughter of the late Henry H. and Caldonna Van Hoozier Gordon. She was the widow of Marion Gordon Sr.

She is survived by two daughters, Martha Pennington of Chesapeake, and Sylvia Albert of Virginia Beach; one son, Marion Gordon Jr. of Middletown, Md.; two sisters, Josie Gordon of Rural, and Carrie Poe of Marion; three half sisters, Betty Wynn, Mary Jane Tuggle, both of Rural Retreat, and Helena Sharror of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; three half brothers, Douglas Gordon, Lacy Gordon, and Danny Gordon, all of Rural Retreat; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Dana Hawks Jackson

Dana Hawks Jackson, 39, of Austinville, the Walton Furnace Community, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, in the Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2 p.m. at the Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Larry Barnes, the Rev. Gary Vernon and the Rev. Perry Hawks officiating. Interment followed in the Bethany cemetery.

She was a graduate of Fort Chiswell High School, former Health Care Assistant at Birdmont and a cosmetologist. She was a member of Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy.

She is survived by a son, Bradley H. Jackson II of the home; parents, Jim and Rennie Bratton Hawks of Austinville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James P. Hawks of Barren Springs, Steven D. Hawks of Winston-Salem, N.C., and the Rev. Perry K. and Dee Hawks of Patrick Springs; maternal grandmother, Anna Belle Bratton of Austinville; a nephew, William Robert Hawks of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and several uncles and aunts.
