J. Dillard Powell

J. Dillard Powell, 64, of Union Hall and Ridgeway, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. in Flora Funeral Chapel with Dr. William T. Manson officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.

He was born in Patrick County, May 18, 1933, a son of the late John H. Powell and the late Ina Slate Powell Johnson. He served four years in the U.S. Navy, was president of Continental Home until he retired, was presently the CEO of Rocky Mount Supply Co. and Bedford Electrical and Plumbing Supply. He was a past member of the National Association of Home Builders and Building Systems Council, served as a Commissioner of the Virginia Housing Development, served as chairman of the National Joint Council of States on Building Codes and Standards Committee, served on the board of directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank. He presently served on the board of directors of First Virginia Bank, the board of directors of Mod-U-Kraf Homes, Inc. and a member of NAHB-Roanoke Valley. He was the founder, past president and member of the Industrialized Association of Virginia, present member of the Virginia Board of Contractors under the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations, and was a member and past master of Piedmont Loge No. 152 A.F. & A.M.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Margaret "Peggy" Huddle Powell of the home, formerly of Wythe County; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale H. and Shirley Powell of Rocky Mount, and Bruster H. and Esther Powell of Ridgeway; four nephews, one niece, a number of great-nieces, great-nephews, brothers-in-law; and sisters-in-law, including Mary Ellen Blair and Ruth H. Banks, both of Wythe County.

Those desiring to make memorials should do so to a charity of your choice.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, S. Main St., Rocky Mount.

Mabel Blessing Sadler

Mabel Blessing Sadler, 84, of Wytheville, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 11, 3 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Dr. Charles Burnett and the Rev. James Pollock. Burial was in the West End cemetery.

She was the widow of Earl W. Sadler.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Marvin Winters of Marion; two grandsons, Brigen Winters of Arlington, and Martin Winters of Charlottesville; a sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Charles Jackson of Wytheville; a brother-in-law, Paul Sadler of Wytheville; Ruth Blessing of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Anna Rose Harrell Hughes

Anna Rose Harrell Hughes of the Grahams Forge Community of Wythe County, Va., died Thursday, July 18, 2002, after a battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20, at 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Sunday, July 21, at 2 p.m. in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She owned and operated the Grahams Forge Foodette for the last 22 years and the Trail Motel and Restaurant from 1958 to 1982. She moved to Virginia from York County, Pa. where she attended school and graduated from Business College in York, Pa. She was born in Mitchell County, N.C., to the late Edward and Nettie May Green Harrell.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Sue Hughes of Max Meadows, Va.; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Wayne Anglim of Maryville, Tenn., and Kim and Dan Whittemore of Abingdon, Va.; grandchildren, Penny Chumbley, Chris Hughes, Caroline Anglim, Annemarie Anglim, Samantha Whittemore and Morgan Whittemore; one great-grandchild, Lucas Hughes; siblings, Thelma Lombardi of Hampstead, Md., Wayne Harrell of East Berlin, Pa., and Buster Harrell of Edgewood, Md.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Earl and Ruby Hughes of Grahams Forge section of Wythe County, Va.; many special nieces, nephews, extended family and friends; and special friends, Pat Roser, Malcolm and Margaret Friend, Mary Collins, Tracy Ratcliffe, and Carolyn Eddins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Max Meadows

Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 432, Max Meadows, VA 24360; Lead Mines Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 502, Austinville, VA 24312; or the American Cancer Society (memorials), c/o Jean K. Lester, P.O. Box 778, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Lena M. Hutton

Lena M. "Mike" Hutton, 83, of Marion, Va., died Friday, July 19, 2002, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 22, at 11 am. at Seaver-Brown Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Herman Cress officiating. Burial will follow in Middle Fork cemetery, Chilhowie, Va.

She was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army. She was a member of Marion V.F.W. Post 4667 and Marion DAV Chapter 39.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene H. Hutton; and a son, Clarence Hutton.

Survivors include four daughters, Donna Dillman of Atkins, Va.; Mary Preston of Chilhowie, Va., Debbie Turnmire of Fayetteville, N.C., and Norma "Susie" Hamm of Marion, Va.; two sons, James "Odie" Hutton of Marion, Va., and Rickie Hutton of North Carolina; one sister, Pauline Wallace of Texas; one brother of Texas; 23 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; special friends, Jeff and Beck Harris and their family, Joe Testerman, and Eva Sexton; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, July 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.

Harold Lyons Fisher, 89, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, May 23, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Mallie Bays Martin

Mallie Bays Martin, 92, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, in the Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 25, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Sheila Burnham and the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was born in Grayson County, Va., a daughter of the late Gaston and Ellen Kemp Younger. She was a lifetime member of the Petunia Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Wytheville, Va.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joshua T. Bays; her second husband, Eugene F. Martin; and a son-in-law, Gilmer Elwood Adams.

Survivors include a daughter, Catherine B. Adams; grandson and his spouse, Robert W. and Patty Adams; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; her special extended family, Virginia and Frank Walters, and Elizabeth Bowling; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 25, from 1 to 2 p.m. (service time) at the Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be sent to the Mallie Martin Memorial Fund at Petunia Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Wytheville, Va.

Freda Smith Perrigan

Freda Smith Perrigan, 66, of Sweetwater, Tenn., died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in the Park West Hospital in Knoxville, Tenn.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 8, at 11 a.m. at the West End cemetery in Wytheville, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Bertha Smith.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Perrigan of Sweetwater, Tenn.; a daughter, Debbie Holt of Sweetwater, Tenn.; a grandson, Joshua Holt of Sweetwater, Tenn.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Colleen and Charlie Dunford of Wytheville, Va.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Carl E. Stark

Dr. Carl E. Stark, 80, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at his residence.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 7, at 8 p.m. conducted by the Wytheville Masonic Lodge at the Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 8, at 3 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Steve Ridenhour officiating. Interment will follow in St. John's Lutheran cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., a son of the late Colonel Howard and Hilda Roe Stark. He was prominent retired Wytheville physician and past president of the Virginia Medical Society. He was a former mayor of Wytheville, Va., for 28 years. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as a Lutheran lay minister. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served as a court reporter for the Army Times during the Nuremberg trials.

He was the first State C.A.R. President in Virginia, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, The St. Nicholas Society of N.Y.; American Legion Post Commander; Kazim Temple Shriner; V.F.W.; Masonic Lodge; Order of the Eastern Star (patron twice); and Lions Club International, Past District Governor.

He was president of the Great Lakes to Florida Highway Association, chairman of the Virginia State Parks and Recreation Commission, first chairman of the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission, chairman of the Mt. Rogers Planning District Commissionis Transportation Committee, past District Governor of Lions of Virginia and past president of the Virginia Municipal League and chaired the Wythe-Bland Water Authority. He was past master of Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82, A.F.&A.M.; and past patron of Evansham Chapter, No. 97, Order of Eastern Star.

He also past chairman of the Wythe County Republican Party, recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship from the Wytheville Rotary Club, recipient of the Governoris Patrick Henry Award and the Melvin Jones Fellow from the Wytheville Lions Club.

He is survived his wife, Anne B. Crockett-Stark of Wytheville, Va.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn "Kitty" and Hardwick "Hack" Caldwell of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., and Hilda and Jim Manos of Los Angeles, Calif.; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Anne C. "Angel" and Charles Carney of Roanoke, Va., and Suzan and Steve Aker of Wichita, Kansas; and 11 grandchildren, Kate Caldwell, Betsy Caldwell, Charlotte Caldwell, Hardwick Caldwell, Ellie Manos, Cate Carney, Sarah Carney, Laura Aker, Quentin Aker, Addison Aker, and Garrett Crockett Aker.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Barnett Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wellness/Community Center, WCCH Foundation, or the Town of Wytheville.

Helen Ellison Gearhart Bedwell

Helen Ellison Gearhart Bedwell, 73, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Saturday, June 1, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 4, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel, Rural Retreat, Va., with the Rev. Jim Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Rural Retreat, Va.

She was a lifetime member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church and was a past employee of the U.S. Government at the Pentagon, the Ford Motor Company and the Chrysler Corporation.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard J. Ellison Sr. and Mabel Heldreth Ellison; a son, Michael Eugene Gearhart; and a brother, Howard J. "Jack" Ellison Jr.

Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Susan Ellison of Rural Retreat, Va.; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Ellison of Rural Retreat, Va.; an aunt and uncle, Walter M. and Patsy H. Jones of Galax, Va.; two nieces, Beth King of Rural Retreat, Va., and Ann Ellison of Wytheville, Va.; two nephews and their spouses, Frank and Lynn Ellison of Staunton, Va., and Jack and Andrea Ellison of Pearisburg, Va.; many cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church or to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

Nannie Fraley "Nan" Boyer Hash

Nannie Fraley "Nan" Boyer Hash, 87, of Independence, Va., died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Forsyth Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 4, at 8 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence, Va., with the Rev. Allen Mahan and the Rev. Paul Boyer officiating. Interment will be in the Independence cemetery.

She was born Oct. 31, 1914, in Duffield, Va., to Jefferson and Suzanna Fraley. She was raised in Scott County, Va. As a young adult, she went to Akron, Ohio, where she met her husband of 32 years, Burton C. Boyer. They spent the majority of their lives in Independence, Va. They served together in Brush Creek Baptist Church. She later married Greek Hash. She was recently living at Wheatland Retirement Center in Hillsville, Va.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda B. and Marvie B. Shelor of Sparta, N.C., and Gena B. and Thomas G. Anders of Wytheville, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Dallas B. and Nancy G. Boyer of Redmond, Wash.; one stepdaughter, Lois S. Hash of Roanoke, Va.; one sister-in-law, Annetta M. Boyer of Toms Brook, Va.; nine grandchildren and their spouses, John B. and Donna Shelor of Kernersville, N.C., Myron K. and Kelli Shelor of Cherryville, N.C., Cari A. and the Rev. Allen Mahan of Bastian, Va., Thomas M. "Mitch" and Mary Lee Anders of Crockett, Va., Mary Suzanne "Molly" Anders of Wytheville, Va., Mark Boyer, Melissa Boyer, Micah Boyer, all of Redmond, Wash., Matthew Boyer and Alisa Boyer, both of Portland, Ore.; six great-grandchildren, Grant Mitchell Anders, Caleb Allen Mahan, Grayson Lee Anders, Elliott Boyer, Camden Anders Mahan and Madeline Grace Shelor; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Edith Mae Robinson Burton, 70, of Speedwell, Va., died Sunday, May 12, 2002, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 14, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Geary Jonas officiating. Interment will follow in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late Charles E. and Grace Spence Burton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene "Jackie" Burton; a son, Paul Anthony Burton; and a granddaughter, Erica Lynn Burton.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara J. Grubb of Wytheville, Va., and Janet F. Foutz of Wytheville, Va.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene J. Jr. and Revonda Burton of Siloam, N.C., Charles G. and Sharon Burton of Bland, Va., Timothy L. and Michelle Burton of Rural Retreat, Va., and Dennis G. and Trina Burton of Ceres, Va.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Jack Bond of Silver Spring, Md., Dora and James Leonard of Morristown, Tenn., and Betty Bilbrey of Woodlawn, Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Shirley Robinson of Bean Station, Tenn., and Gene and Lois Robinson of Damascus, Md.; 22 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
