Lillie Webb Willis

Lillie Webb Willis, 103, of Salem, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1996, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem with the Rev. Harry Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the West End cemetery in Wytheville at 2 p.m.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Willis; and two sons, Herbert Webb and Eugene Webb.

Survivors include three daughters, Lorene Lewis of Goodview, Harvie Markham of Fincastle, and Luverne Graves of Roanoke; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a foster sister, Effie Brannock; and a foster brother, Walter Gordan.

John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem is in charge of the arrangements.

Eddie Ronald Bartee

Eddie Ronald Bartee, 55, of Christiansburg died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1996, in the V.A. Medical Center, Salem.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m. at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Bartee; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Ann Bartee of Christiansburg, and John Bartee of Raleigh, N.C.; his parents, Jess and Margaret Bartee of Wytheville; and four brothers and sisters-in-law, Padgett and Rita Bartee of Columbia, S.C., James and Chris Bartee of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Dexter and Agnes Bartee of Clinton, Md., and Gaylord and Judy Bartee of Bowie, Md.

Richardson-Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg is in charge of the arrangements.

Garnett Dean Bedwell

Garnett Dean Bedwell, 84, of Ivanhoe died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1996, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 20, at 1 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Taz Reid and Jack King officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery. IVA Lodge No. 173 Independent Order of Odd Fellows conducted graveside rites.

He was born in Carroll County, the son of the late Ellis and Lucy Cox Bedwell. He was a member of the IVA Lodge No. 173 Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

He was preceded in death by a son, Earl Bedwell.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Alma G. Bedwell of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joann and Charles Settino of Chicago, Ill., and Glenda and Stanley Martin of Wytheville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Jerry Bedwell of Salem, Joseph and Cornelia Bedwell of Rocky Mount, and Donald and Sharon Bedwell of Mentor, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Donald Raymond Clemens Jr.

Donald Raymond Clemens Jr., 19, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1996, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Ray Haskett and the Rev. Sonny Honaker officiating. Interment will follow in West End cemetery.

He graduated from George Wythe High School in 1995, where he had been a member of the George Wythe High School marching band. He was also a member of the Wytheville Community College Band.

He is survived by his parents, Donald Raymond Clemens Sr., and Joyce A. Clemens, both of Wytheville; a brother, Ronald Raymond Clemens of Wytheville; maternal grandparents, Hoge and Myrtle Thompson of Bland; paternal grandfather William Raymond Clemens of Bland; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ruth Smith Cox

Ruth Smith Cox, 75, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1996, in the Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Bob White Blvd. Church of God, Pulaski with the Rev. Kenneth Fogus and Pastor Owens officiating. Interment followed in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery, Draper Valley.

Born March 11, 1921, in Patrick County, she was a daughter of the late John William Smith and Mahala Ellen Shelor Smith. She was a member of the Bob White Blvd. Church of God in Pulaski.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vivian Osborne "Butch" Cox; a daughter, Rebecca Jean Cox; two sisters, Josephine Lamoine and Minnie Yeckley; and a brother, Archie Smith.

Survivors include one brother, John "Snuffy" Walter Smith of Lenior, N.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Bower Funeral Chapel in Pulaski was in charge of the arrangements.

Dewey B. Dunford

Dewey B. "Tom" Dunford, 52, of Route 3, Wytheville, the Piney Community, died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bob Lewis and the Rev. Caudell Ashford officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

He was a member of the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church and was employed with the Radford Army Ammunition Plant for 29 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hobart Early Dunford.

Survivors include his wife, Mickey Lynn Dunford of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney and Shannon Dunford of Route 2, Wytheville, and Arlan and Robyn Dunford of Route 1, Max Meadows; one grandchild, Keya Dawn Dunford; his mother, Grace Pugh Dunford of Route 3, Wytheville; one sister, Zerna Felts of Route 1, Max Meadows; one brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Thelma Dunford of Route 3, Wytheville; a half-sister, Helen Peyton of Picayune, Miss.; three half-brothers, Glen Dunford of Logan, W.Va., Randolph Dunford of Mt. Airy, N.C., and Willis Dunford of Abingdon; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Betty and Frank Ashford of Route 3, Wytheville; one brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law, Jim and Kay Akers, Donna Akers, and Frankie Akers, all of Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Lead Mines Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 502, Austinville, Va. 24312.

Marie Jones Arnold

Marie Jones Arnold, 65, of Rt. 3, Wytheville, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 1996, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Carrico and Jack King officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Frank P. and Molly Dunford Jones. She was employed at the Fort Chiswell High School for 31 years. She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Mabe; and two brothers, Fletcher Jones and Eugene Jones.

Survivors include her husband, Edward E. Arnold of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Molly and Gary Shaw, Terry and Tony Nalley, and Jessie Mabe, all of Greensboro, N.C.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Edward E. "Butch" Jr. and Teresa Arnold of Route 1, Max Meadows, and Anthony "Tony" Arnold of Route 3, Wytheville; four grandchildren; one sister, Helen Carter of Greenville, N.C.; three brothers, Munsey Jones of Max Meadows, Luther Jones and Hersel Jones, both of Route 3, Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Mabel L. Jones

Mabel L. Jones, 72, of Route 2, Max Meadows, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 1996, in the Pulaski Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 1 p.m. at the Austinville Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Gary Cope, Rev. Kenneth Fogus, and the Rev. Joseph Harrison officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late Luther and Nettie Jones, and was a member of the Austinville Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Lee Jones and Edward "Riley" Jones.

Survivors include three sisters and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Owen Eversole, Mamie J. Eversole, all of Route 2, Max Meadows, and Willie J. Lephew of Austinville; a sister-in-law, Judy Jones of Austinville; and several nieces and nephews.

John Elmer Leedy Sr.

John Elmer Leedy Sr., 78, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 1996, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the East End cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Roy and Gay Thompson Leedy; a son, John E. Leedy Jr.; and two brothers, Cecil Leedy and David Leedy.

Survivors include his wife, Frankie Martin Leedy of Wytheville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Billy Fields of Wytheville, and Donna and Dee Stroupe of Crockett; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Charlene Leedy of Wytheville, and Marty and Leslie Leedy of Wytheville; one sister, Nancy Udell of Wytheville; and five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Gillman Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

James Daniel Manuel

James Daniel Manuel, 74, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Dec. 21, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

He was retired from the Wytheville Police Dept., and worked part-time for the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dawn Manuel Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Bralley Manuel of Wytheville; his son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Nancy Manuel of Wytheville; a son-in-law, Jerry Smith of Wytheville; three sisters, Byrd M. Bourne, Mary Lou M. Clemons, and Georgia M. Gillman, all of Wytheville; four brothers, Bill Manuel, Jesse Manuel, both of Wytheville, Buddy Manuel of Beaufort, S.C., and Lawrence Manuel of Wytheville; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Heart Association, the American Lung Association, or St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Dallas Ray Neese

Dallas Ray "Bucky" Neese, 53, of Wytheville, died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Steven P. Ridenhour. Interment followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Walters Neese of Wytheville; two daughters and son-in-law, Deidre and Scott Urban of Alexandria, and Wendy Neese of Wytheville; one son, Todd Neese of Salem; his parents, Frank W. and Hazel Neese of Wytheville; and one grandson, Tyler Andrew Urban.

Those who wish to do so may make memorials to the DARE program in care of the Wytheville Police Dept., 185 W. Spring St., Wytheville, Va. 24382. ATTN. Gary Sowers.

James Lloyd Austin

James Lloyd "Jim" Austin, 61, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Larry Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Joseph G. and Mattie Lee Stoots Austin and was a U.S. Air Force Veteran.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.

Survivors include three daughters, Jamie Benell of Palm Bay, Fla., Deborah Austin of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Cynthia D. Austin of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.; one grandson, Landon Benell; two brothers, Roy G. Austin of Wytheville, and Kyle Austin of Hillsville; three sisters-in-law, Lucille Austin of Hillsville, Goldia Austin of Austinville, and Ester Austin of Max Meadows; one special niece, Sandra Frazier Sutphin of Austinville; and several other nieces and nephews.

Carrie Drake Crockett

Carrie Drake Crockett, 86, of Roanoke, formerly of Wythe County, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem with the Rev. Cochran officiating.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Albert Oglesby and Anna Lawson Crockett and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Roanoke.

She is survived by two sisters, Clara Wyatt of Woodbridge, and Gracie C. Goodman of Austinville; and a brother, Frank F. Crockett of Salem.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 28 after the services at the cemetery.
