Emma Grace Hedrick Guthrie

Emma Grace Hedrick Guthrie, 80, of Kennet Square, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 15, 1996, at her home.

Funeral services and burial were held in Kennet Square, Pa.

She was born Aug. 7, 1916, a daughter of the late Joseph Walter Hedrick and Vannie Mariah Felty, formerly of Wythe County. She attended several Hedrick reunions held in Wytheville.

She is survived by her husband Edwin Guthrie; three children; and several sisters and brothers.

Mary Belle Johnson

Mary Belle Johnson, 90, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 28 at 3 p.m. at the Bethel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Leonard Davis and the Rev. Thomas Braxton officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late William Elbert and Josephine Monroe Johnson. She was employed as a dietitian in the Wythe County Schools and Hospital for many years and was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church where she served on the Stewardess Board Choir.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Darnella Gibson; two sons, William Leonard Sessoms and Robert Henry Sessoms; a grandson, Richard Coates; two sisters; and two brothers.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Deborah Jean Sessoms of Roanoke; a grandson, Sanders Williams Sessoms of Wytheville; four great-grandsons, Emmanuel Kolidakis Jr., Donald Sessoms, Leonard Sessoms, and Tyrone Coates; a great-great-granddaughter, Khyra Nichole Kolidakis; one sister, Annie L. Hubbard of Wytheville; and one brother, John H. Johnson of Columbus, Ohio.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Eva Shinault Lambert

Eva Shinault Lambert, 67, of Route 2, Austinville, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 29, at 4 p.m. at the Beulah United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Long and the Rev. Ernest Chinault officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Carroll County, the daughter of the late Joseph and Willie Martin Lowe and was a member of the Beulah United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William "Bill" Shinault; and a brother, Tommy Lowe.

Survivors include her husband, Douglas Lambert of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Geneva Shinault of Austinville, Riley and Marcia Shinault of Route 2, Austinville, and Terry and Bonita Shinault of Hillsville; a step-son and wife, James R. and Daisy Lambert of Fries; a brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Louise Lowe of Pulaski; four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren; and three special friends, Gay Sisk, Chitwood Porter, and Sissie Hill.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Anita Leagans Mottesheard

Anita Leagans Mottesheard, 56, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, in the Forsyth Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. C. Samuel Brackett, the Rev. Lee Glover and the Rev. R.J. Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Ivanhoe.

She was employed for the past 31 years with Bellsouth and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She attended the Church of God of Prophecy.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Glen Leagans.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Mottesheard of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Dean Leagans and Teri Oliveris of Winston-Salem, N.C.; her mother, Mary Shinault Leagans of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Scott Luper of Fries; a brother and sister-in-law, William Glen Jr. and Shirley Leagans of Max Meadows; a special grandson, Eric Dean Oliveris of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three step-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home.

Lessie May DeHart Viars

Lessie May DeHart Viars, 83, of Route 1, Draper, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. David Allison and Rev. Johnny Howlett officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Christian Church cemetery, Draper.

She was born Sept. 21, 1913, in Pulaski County. She was a daughter of the late Austin DeHart and Laura Jane Viars DeHart. She was a member of the Newbern Church of God, Newbern.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Irvin Viars; three sisters, Frances Payne, Josie Allison and Violet Riggins; and one brother, Delmer DeHart.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. George (Myrtle) Hodge of Newbern; one son, William Austin Viars of Draper; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Coradell Surface of High Point, N.C.; and four brothers, Pete DeHart of Max Meadows, Charlie DeHart of Bassett, James DeHart of High Point, N.C., and Rev. Harless DeHart of Max Meadows.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Dec. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bob White Blvd., Pulaski, or anytime at the home of her son, William Austin Viars, of Route 1 (State Road Route 100), Draper.

Roger Lee Wynn

Roger Lee Wynn, 36, of Route 2, Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, in the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Rocky Allen Wynn.

Survivors include a mother and step-father, Ruby and Benny Ratcliff of Crockett; a father and step-mother, Bobby and Joann Wynn of Rural Retreat; a sister, Pamela Wynn of Max Meadows; three brothers, Rickey Wynn of Crockett, Randy Wynn and Ronnie Wynn, both of Wytheville; grandmothers, Alice Ryan of Speedwell, and Emma Wynn of Crockett; girl friend, Jeannie Bishop of Rural Retreat; a special little girl, Jennifer "Squirrelly" Bishop; and one niece and one nephew.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Swanson Thomas Campbell

Swanson Thomas Campbell, 81, of Austinville, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Beulah United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Barnes, the Rev. Tommy Barnes and Jack King officiating. Interment followed in the Bethany cemetery.

He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Van Campbell.

He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude Hill Campbell; and one brother, Bryant Campbell.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Sandra Shirley of Gauteir, Miss., and Peggy and Kegley Baumgardner of Verona; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Joann Campbell of Route 2, Austinville; four grandchildren, Greg and Brad Campbell, Todd Shirley, and Kim Dalton; four great-grandchildren, Jade, Joshua, Willie and Steven; two step-grandchildren, Brandon and Dusty; three sisters, Wanda Jackson of Route 3, Wytheville, Magdalene Dalton of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Beatrice "Beatte" Dalton of Ivanhoe; and several nieces and nephews.

Alma Humphrey Holston

Alma Humphrey Holston, 63, of Pulaski, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996, in Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Hershey J. Longenecker and the Rev. Jim Goddard officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood cemetery.

Born June 1, 1933, in Wythe County, she was the daughter of the late Charles S. Humphrey Sr. and Alma Shaffer Humphrey. She was the office manager for Senator Bo Trumbo and had served on Town Council for several years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sanders M. Holston Sr.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Sanders M. Jr. and Debbie Holston of Hickory, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn Holston and Billy Webb of Draper; four sisters; one brother; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Rose Webb, Lauren Ann Holston, and Lindsey Noel Holston.

James Robert Nelson Jr.

James Robert "Bobby" Nelson Jr., 75, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 30, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. D. Ray Humphries officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant with 33 years.

He is survived by his wife, Irene O. Nelson of the home; two daughters, Deborah L. Nelson of Max Meadows, and Jennie Turner of Christiansburg; four stepdaughters, Joyce Shirley of Alabama, Donna Maddy of North Carolina, Sharon Harmon of Wytheville, and Peggy Haynes of Radford; a stepson, Dennis Wayne Ratcliffe of Pulaski; five brothers, Cecil Nelson of Barren Springs, John Nelson, George Nelson, both of Max Meadows, Paul Nelson of South Carolina, and Kelly Nelson; two grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren.

Lydia Jernigan Poe

Lydia Jernigan Poe, 92, of Wytheville, formerly of Grayson County, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996, at the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 28, at 11 a.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ron Irvin and Mark Jones officiating. Interment was in the Independence cemetery.

Born June 6, 1904, in Dunn, N.C., the daughter of the late James and Frances Parnell. She was the widow of Loy Poe. She was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church.

She is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Frances Poe of Wytheville, Viola Moss of Independence, and Emma and Harold Shaw of Galax; a daughter-in-law, Lela Poe of Galax; and seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence was in charge of the arrangements.

Conley Franklin Price

Conley Franklin Price, 75, of Max Meadows, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Curtis Stoots officiating. Entombment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens with American Legion Post No. 9 conducting military rites.

He was a former employee of Wytheville Housing Development, Radford Army Ammunition Plant and the U.S. Postal service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Aileen Price.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Samuel Buchanan of Max Meadows, and Sherry and Michael Stuart of Speedwell; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Joyce Price of Max Meadows; one brother, James Price of Michigan; two sisters, Katherine Poole of Pennsylvania, and Doris Thomas of Washington; a special friends, Alberta Payne and Todd; and seven grandchildren and two-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 31, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel or at the residence of his daughter Pamela Buchanan at any time.

William Ray Richardson

William Ray Richardson, 62, of Max Meadows, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Prater and Sadie Hedge Richardson; and a brother, Prater Hayes Richardson Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Mary U. Richardson of Max Meadows; two daughters, Julia R. Freeman and Jean R. Dunford, both of Max Meadows; two sons, William Ray Richardson Jr. and John Prater Richardson, both of Wytheville; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Hospice of Wythe and Bland County, 540 West Main St., Wytheville, Va. 24382.
