Gustine Scott Sawyers

Gustine Scott Sawyers, 79, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, July 25, 2002.

Funeral service will be held Monday, July 29, at 1 p.m. at the Franklin Street United Methodist Church, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Kenneth Sawyers, the Rev. Shelley Kyle and Elder Kennith Johnson. Interment will be in the Oak Wood cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was the daughter of the late Walter V. and Augustine Woolwine Sawyers and was a member of Franklin Street United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mack Neal Sawyers.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles W. and Barbara Sawyers of Wytheville, Va.; a brother, Albert Sawyers of Johnson City, Tenn.; three sisters, Elizabeth Young Adams of Johnson City, Tenn., Garnett Snowden of Philadelphia, Pa., and Winfred Murphy of Denver, Co.; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews .

Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.

James Hugh Widener

James Hugh Widener, 68, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Friday, July 26, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 29, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel, Rural Retreat, Va., with the Rev. Norb Bennetts officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va.

He was born in Washington County, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Ellie Widener; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Lera Rich Widener of Rural Retreat, Va.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Homer Burris of Rural Retreat, Va., Pam and Richard Fielder of Roanoke, Va., Karen and Ronnie Jones of Rural Retreat, Va., and Sharon and Bryan Cassell of Max Meadows, Va.; three sisters, Liney Peake, Ella Kegley and Fronie Reeves, all of Marion, Va.; one brother, Bobby Widener of Marion, Va.; one grandson, Andrew Nicolas Cassell of Max Meadows, Va.; a special nephew, Donnie Widener of Rural Retreat, Va.; and several other nephews and nieces.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

Ruth White Kelley

Ruth White Kelley, 83, of Route 1, Draper, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Preston O. Sartelle Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

She was born in Buena Vista on Dec. 26, 1913, and was a daughter of the late Arthur Stuart White and Nettie Sheltman White. She was a member of the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Graham Kelley.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Bettie Kirk of Fairlawn, and Bennie and Don Pratt of Draper; a son and daughter-in-law, Nathaniel Graham and Debbie Kelley of Draper; two sisters, Margaret White of White Thorn, and Nettie Rudisill of Long Shop; two brothers, John White of McCoy, and William White of White Thorn; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorials be made to the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church, Route 1, Draper, Va. 24324.

Virgie Ellen Wagner Payne

Virgie Ellen Wagner Payne, 88, of Ivanhoe, died Friday, Jan. 10, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Rosenbaum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. J.C. McPeak officiating. Interment will follow in the Davis cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Paynesville, W.Va., a daughter of the late Cicero and Theodocia Wagner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Edward Payne; three brothers, Garfield Wagner, Dewey Wagner, and Monroe Wagner; and two sisters, Grace Horne and Della Horne.

Survivors include 12 children, sons and daughters-in-law, and daughters and sons-in-law, Philip Sheridan Payne of Tazewell, Jack and Etta Marie Payne Moore of Columbus, Ohio, Clifford Edward and Mary Payne of Pulaski, Freda Alma Payne Smith of Tazewell, Hubert Dillard Payne of Ivanhoe, Roland Payne of Ammonata, W.Va., Bobby and Wanda Payne Muncy of Princeton, W.Va.; Burl and Anna Payne of Ivanhoe, Bud and Wilma Lee Payne Finley of Bluewell, W.Va., Chester Wilkins and Christine Payne of Rt. 3, Wytheville, Robert and Sylvia Fern Payne Akers of Ivanhoe, and Jim and Theodocia Payne Hancock of Paynesville, W.Va.; two sisters, Floy Horne and Maggie Horne, both of Paynesville, W.Va.; and 65 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Elbert James Reedy

Elbert James "E.J." Reedy, 78, of Route 2, Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Rural Retreat Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Haskett officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Marion V.F.W. Post No. 4667 conducting graveside military rites. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was born in Jewell Ridge, a son of the late Grant H. and Inda Stevenson Reedy. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and World War II.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Vince Reedy; and a sister, Alma Fernandes.

Survivors include his wife, Vergie L. Reedy of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene Childers, and Dorine and Gary Miller, all of Rural Retreat; one step-son and daughter-in-law, Arlen and Loretta Cook of Richlands; two sisters, Irene White of Wesminister, Md., and Dorothy Lane of Glen Burnie, Md.; six brothers, William Reedy of Rural Retreat, Wandel Reedy, Lester Reedy, both of Jewell Ridge, Robert Reedy of Richlands, Dewey Reedy and Virgil Reedy, both of Baltimore, Md.; a niece, Henrietta Wolfe of Baltimore, Md.; and five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

William Howell Stephens

William Howell Stephens, 86, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997, in the Francis Marion Manor.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo Medley Stephens.

Survivors include one sister, Minnie Seatz of Todd, N.C.; two brothers, Charles O. Stephens of Sugar Grove, and Jay Stephens of Maryland; one half-sister, Faye Stephens of Lenior, N.C.; one half-brother, Junior Stephens of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Atha Marie Umberger

Atha Marie Umberger, 88, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 12, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Pastor Amy Oehlschlaeger. A private interment will be held Monday, Jan. 13.

She was the daughter of the late Cloyd T. and Annie Walters Umberger.

She is survived by one sister, Elsie Moyer of Wytheville; one brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Cecil Umberger of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Robert Lee Windle

Robert Lee Windle, 67, of Conowingo, Md., died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Evans Funeral Chapel - Bel Air, P.A. in Forest Hill, Md. with the Rev. Alvin Williams officiating.

He was born April 4, 1929, in Pulaski. He served in the Army during the Korean war. He was a retired truck driver with the Umerly Trucking Co. with 17 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gladys J. Earheart Windle of Conowingo, Md.; five daughters, Rebecca Hoffman of Mechanicburg, Pa., Debra Ross, Brenda Wyatt, both of Delta, Pa., Linda Simmons of Joppa, Md., and Ashley Windle of Conowingo, Md.; two sons, John Windle of Delta, Pa., and William Windle Sr. of Strasburg, Pa.; one sister, Helen Breen of Melbourne, Fla.; and 16 grandchildren.

Evans Funeral Chapel - Bel Air, P.A. in Forest Hill, Md. is in charge of the arrangements.

Pauline Wiley Brown

Pauline Wiley Brown, 80, of Radford, died Friday, Jan. 10, 1997, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Central United Methodist Church at Radford with the Rev. Warren Wattenbarger and Pastor Jerry C. Gibson officiating. Interment followed in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin.

She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Radford. She was a retired inspector for Burlington Industries in Radford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Spangler Brown; and two sisters, Dorothy Warden and Phyllis Lawson.

Survivors include a daughter, Pat Harmon of Christiansburg; one brother, Leon Crouch of Arizona; one sister, Ruby Stowers of Rocky Gap; four grandchildren, Teresa Becher, Barry Harmon, Kasey Kenley and Hud Harmon; and four great-grandchildren.

Robert Dix Kincer

Robert Dix "Bob" Kincer, 56, of Speedwell, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. in the United Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Joe Shumate. Interment will be in the Mt. Ephraim United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Dix Kincer.

Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Charles E. "Chuck" Kincer, and Michael S. "Gus" and Georgia Ann Kincer, all of Speedwell; four sisters, Alice Brown of Rural Retreat, Wanda Hall of Crockett, Donna Lethco, and Norma Linkous, both of Wytheville; and his father, Hubert "Jelly" Kincer of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home or at the home in Speedwell at anytime.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Speedwell Fire Department or to the United Lutheran Building fund.

Polly Mae Blevins Parks

Polly Mae Blevins Parks, 62, of Route 1, Sugar Grove, died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Bill Hinton officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery.

She was born in Chilhowie, the daughter of the late Velt and Ethel Sweeney Blevins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Lewis Parks.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Carl Wilson of Sugar Grove, and Patricia and Kenneth Neely of Marion; two sons, Jesse Parks, and James Parks, both of Sugar Grove; and eight grandchildren, Daniel Parks, James Parks Jr., Luther Lewis Parks II, Jerry Truckenmiller, Brandy Truckenmiller, Tara Parks, Alisha Parks, and David Neely.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 15, at the Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville.

Eva Claudine Pope

Eva Claudine Pope, 88, of Ashtabula, Ohio, formerly of Wytheville, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, in Ashtabula, Ohio.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late Dexter C. and Mattie Waddell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Y. Pope; and a brother, Randolph D. Waddell.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph Y. and Joann Pope of Phoenix, Ariz., Walter Randolph and Frances Pope of Rome, Ohio, Dexter and Gladys Pope of Grand Haven, Mich., and Ezra and Marjorie Pope of Ashtabula, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Stephen G. (Billie) Huddle of Wytheville, and Mrs. James (Thelma) Kelly of Bristol; nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
