Marie Smith Williams

Marie Smith Williams, 80, of New Bern, N.C., formerly of Wytheville, died Thursday, May 14, 1998, in Twin Rivers Nursing Home.

Graveside service was held Tuesday, May 19, in the St. John's Lutheran cemetery conducted by Pastor Joe Shumate.

She was a daughter of the late David S. and Bertha Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Brown Williams.

Survivors include one son, F. Wayne Williams of Friedens, Pa.; five sisters, Colleen Dunford, Phillis Simmerman, Mary Hilton and Clara Turner, all of Wytheville, and Naomi Perrigan of Statesville, N.C.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Geneva B. Broyles

Geneva B. Broyles, 88, of Lindside, W.Va., died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at a Radford hospital.

Funeral services will be Sunday, May 24, at 3 p.m. at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, W.Va., with the Rev. Tommy Mounts and the Rev. Jim Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at the Swope cemetery in Lindside, W.Va.

Born Aug. 12, 1909, at Marlinton, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Elijah G. and Annie Atkins Bradley. She was a life long resident of Lindside, a member of the Lindside United Methodist Church and was retired from the Celanese Corp.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth V. Broyles in 1973; a twin sister, Genetta Pence; and a brother, Fred Bradley.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Donald Martin of Pulaski; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Sherry and Trace Lumpkin of Rural Retreat; a grandson, Don Martin of Atlanta, Ga.; a great-grandson, Austin Lumpkin; a niece and spouse, Louise and Harry Biggs of Pulaski; a nephew and spouse, Richard and Frances Pence of Lindside, W.Va.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home in Peterstown, W.Va., is in charge of the arrangements.

Elizabeth Greene Albert

Elizabeth Greene Albert, 68, of Wytheville, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, in the Princeton Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 26, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randall Greene and the Rev. William "Bill" Dale officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Boone, N.C., a daughter of the late Jerome and Channie Eller Greene. She was a member of the Original Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Bruce Albert Sr.; one grandchild, Randy King Jr.; and three brothers, Dallas Greene, Jasper Greene, and Jess Greene.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy and Donald Henderlite of Marion, Paige Albert of Deep Gap, N.C., and Odessa Faye and the Rev. Sammy Shupe of Matoka, W.Va.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jerry D. and Lynn King of Pulaski, Randy L. King of McAllen, Texas, and William B. "Bill" Jr. and Kris Albert of Wytheville; three sisters, Virgie L. Lovejoy, Alma Hamby, both of Lenore, N.C., and Bertha L. Shirley of Deep Gap, N.C.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, the Rev. Roscoe B. Green of Lenore, N.C., Paul F. and Catherine Green of Fleetwood, N.C., and Midas N. and Opal Greene of Deep Gap, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and one step-great-granddaughter.

Roy Graham Austin

Roy Graham Austin, 73, of Austinville, died Friday, May 22, 1998, in the Salem Veterans Administration Hospital.

A graveside service and interment were held Sunday, May 24, at 3:30 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Larry Barnes officiating. Grover King Post No. 1115 conducted graveside military rites.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Joseph Graham and Mattie Lee Stoots Austin. He was a member of the Grover King Post No. 1115 V.F.W., the American Legion Post No. 9, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Carlton "Kyle" and Lucy Austin of Hillsville; a sister-in-law, Goldie Austin of Shorts Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville was in charge of the arrangements.

Cora Jane Davidson

Cora Jane Davidson, 99, of Austinville, died Monday, May 25, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 28, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

She was born in Carroll County, a daughter of the late Isom and Margaret Cook.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm P. Davidson; and four brothers, Howard Cook, Charles Cook, Pearl Cook, and James Cook.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Palmer and Mary Ellen Davidson of Hillsville; three grandchildren, Pamela Davidson Hurt of Rural Retreat, Ronald Davidson of Roanoke, and Melissa Davidson of Manassas; two great-grandchildren, Corinna D. Harmon of Wytheville, and Dillon M. Hurt of Rural Retreat; a sister, Peggy Bates of Florida; and a special dear friend, Mildred Davidson of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home.

Warren Dunn

Warren Dunn, 73, of Bastian, died Monday, May 25, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Bastian Church of God with the Rev. James H. Beavers officiating. Interment will follow in the family cemetery in Bastian.

He was born in Bland County, a son of the late Robert Edward and Camellia Bird Dunn. He was a life long member of the Church of God and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Sarah Carter, Nora Kidd, and Edith Brizendine; and two brothers, Earl Dunn, and Keith Dunn.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy and Camela; a sister, Doris Dillow of Bastian; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 28, from 5 p.m. until service time at the Bastian Church of God.

William Walter Ellison Sr.

William Walter Ellison Sr., 83, of Ceres, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, in the Kegley Manor in Bastian.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 26, at 11 a.m., at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Nebo with the Rev. Bill Schoeneman and the Rev. Joe Farlow officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Catherine Ellison.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Elizabeth Catherine Ellison and Roy Deyton of Thurmont, Md., and Peggy Sue Ellison of Ceres; three sons and daughters-in-law, William Henry Sr. and Ann Ellison, William Walter Jr. and Louise Ellison, all of Sophia, N.C., and Bud Eugene Ellison of Austinville; two sisters, Rebecca Cassell of Ceres, and Helen Clark of Rockville, Md.; two brothers, William Preston Ellison of Bland, and Marshall Tyler Ellison of Mechanicsburg; and 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren.

Donald Eugene Gregory

Donald Eugene Gregory, 54, of Pulaski, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, in the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 24, at 2 p.m. at the Thornspring United Methodist Church, Pulaski County, with the Rev. L.J. Rippey officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

He was born Nov. 28, 1943, in Pulaski County, the son of the late Vernon L. Gregory. He was a former maintenance foreman for Hercules Inc. of Radford with 23 years of service and was currently working for Gregory Seeding in Pulaski. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Vietnam.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa G. and Eddie Worrell, formerly of Pulaski; his mother, Annie Graham Gregory of Pulaski; sisters, Mrs. Terry (Linda) Quesenberry of Pulaski, and Mrs. Eddie (Brenda) White of Dublin; his fiancée, Donna Abell of Pulaski; and his fiancée's two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Tina) Jones of Pulaski, and Mrs. James (Tammy) Phillippi of Dublin.

Robert Earl Groseclose

Robert Earl Groseclose, 74, of Wytheville, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 26, at 7 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Carrico officiating.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Robert Emmitt and Jettie Woodson Johnson Groseclose. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Wade Groseclose.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Gallimore Groseclose of Birdmont Health Care Center; one daughter, Sandra G. Hurley of Williams Town, N.J.; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Linda Groseclose of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Elsie May Groseclose Sheffey of Dublin, and Evangeline Groseclose Humphrey of Rural Retreat; two brothers, Garland Groseclose, and Ernest Groseclose, both of Route 3, Wytheville; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mark Christopher Muncy

Mark Christopher Muncy, 42, of Bland, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at his residence.

There will be no visitation or services.

He was born in Grundy, a son of the late Gilbert Carter and Constance Evans Muncy.

He is survived by a brother, Bruce Carter Muncy of Virginia Beach.

Joy Massey Smith

Joy Massey Smith, 47, of Pearisburg, died Sunday, May 24, 1998, after a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 25, at 5 p.m. at Angels Rest Baptist Fellowship in Pearisburg with Dr. Charles Taylor (pastor) officiating. Burial followed in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.

She was born Dec. 9, 1950, in Louisville, Ky. and grew up in Wytheville. She had been employed by the Giles County School Board. She was a charter member of the newly formed Angels Rest Baptist Fellowship in Pearisburg.

She was preceded in death by an infant sister.

Survivors include her husband of 28 years, Leo H. Smith II or Pearisburg; a daughter, Stacy Erin Smith of Knoxville, Tenn.; Stacy's fiancé, John Porter of Knoxville, Tenn.; a son, Martin Cambron Smith of the home; Martin's close friend, Lainie Cocozza of Ocean City, N.J.; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Leo H. Smith Sr. of Christiansburg; her parents, the Rev. James C. Massey and Mrs. Frankie H. Massey of Richmond; her sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca M. Willis and Edwin R. Willis; and their children, James Edwin, Richard, and Emily, all of Richmond; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Homer Neal Wright

Homer Neal Wright, 65, of the Hollybrook Community, Bland, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, in Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 23, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. J.D. Clark officiating. Burial was in the Mountain Field cemetery, Hollybrook.

He was born June 13, 1932, at Hollybrook, a son of the late William Olney and Ollie Mae Falls Wright.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Conley Wright of Bland; one daughter, Amber Williams of Wytheville; three sons, Ervin Wright of Rich Creek, Troy Wright of Bland and Wesley Wright of Pembroke; one sister, Ramona Morehead of Beaumont; two brothers, Maxwell A. Wright of Bland, and Stanford Wright of Augusta, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate was in charge of the arrangements.

James Wayne Crockett

James Wayne Crockett, 46, of Max Meadows, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A graveside service and interment was held Thursday, May 28, at 1 p.m. at the Crockett Family cemetery with the Rev. Owen Moore officiating.

He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and was a heavy equipment operator.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Clayton Crockett.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Dunford Crockett of the home; his mother, Martha Louise Littreal Crockett of Cripple Creek; four sisters, Bonnie Holbrook, Linda Jones, Lavonne "Beanie" Williams, and Rachel "Muggs" Pack, all of Route 3, Wytheville; three brothers, Charles S. Crockett of Fries, Jessie R. "Jess" Crockett of Crockett, and Dennis D. Crockett of Siler City, N.C.; special nephew, Brad Williams of Route 3, Wytheville; his mother-in-law, Golda Dunford of Route 3, Wytheville; his brother-in-law and spouse, Dwight and Cheri Dunford of Route 1, Max Meadows; 14 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.
