Dora Lillian Gallemore Midkiff

Dora Lillian Gallemore Midkiff, 91, of East Ridge Road, Wytheville, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, after a long illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 2, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Charles Burnett. Interment was in the West End cemetery.

She was the third daughter of Jim and Sally Gallemore. She was born and raised in Austinville, where her father was carpenter foreman for the Bertha Mineral Division of the New Jersey Zinc Company and her mother ran the Company Boarding House.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Dewey Midkiff.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Midkiff, and Pauline Midkiff, both of Wytheville; two sons, Doug Midkiff of Rochester, N.Y., and J.W. Midkiff of Wytheville; three grandchildren and a spouse, Sharon and David Damalouji of Huntington, Md., Kimberly Midkiff of Knoxville, Tenn., and Lyndsay Midkiff of Wytheville; two great-grandchildren, Rachel Damalouji and Jonathan Damalouji; and several nieces and nephews.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Edward Carl Nester

Edward Carl "Talley" Nester, 72, of Austinville, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 4, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Aileen Aker officiating. Interment will follow in the Sanders cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County a son of the late Hobert and Essie Mae Thomas Nester and was a member of the Gravley Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was retired from the New Jersey Zinc Company and was employed by the Wythe County School system. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Shirley Nester, and Dwight Nester; and one sister, Ethel Thompson.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Nester of the home; a sister, Ruby Hall of Austinville; a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, R.P. and Jean Gravley of Austinville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Agnes Ruth Bourne Watson

Agnes Ruth Bourne Watson of Wytheville, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 1, at 11 a.m. at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Michael Wingard officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Stephen T. and Ruth Davis Bourne. She was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church and the Wythe County Historical Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Clark Watson.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Mason Hardin of Route 1, Independence, and Sue and Barney Seagle of Max Meadows; two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard and Beverly Watson of Bristol, Tenn., and Larry and Brenda Watson of Route 1, Wytheville; three granddaughters and spouses, Leslie and Andy Rios, Leigh Ann Watson, and Teena and John Bishop; four grandsons and spouses, Jeff Akers, Chris Akers, Ken and Tiffany Akers, Ann Todd and Jeanie Heldreth; three great-granddaughters, Amanda Shea Akers, Kristen Montana Heldreth, and Krystal Danielle Dale; a sister, Helen B. James of Fair Lawn; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Lambert Williams

Helen Lambert Williams of Route 4, Wytheville, died Monday, June 1, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 3, at 1 p.m. at the Rosewood Memorial Gardens with Dr. Carl Stark officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyman Williams.

Survivors include two sisters, Beulah Wohlford of Barco, N.C., and Bertha Dix of Route 4, Wytheville; sister-in-law, Ruth Lambert of Wytheville; eight nieces, six nephews; special niece and spouse, Kathy and Shermie Smith; special nephew and spouse, Pat and Mike Dix; and a special great-niece, Kelli Dix.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Hospice of Southwest Virginia.

James C. Wingate

James C. Wingate, 78, of Titusville, Fla., died May 29, 1998, in the Wuesthoff Memorial Hospital in Rockledge, Fla.

A memorial service will be held in Virginia at a later date.

He was born April 23, 1920, in Speedwell. He last worked as a self employed general contractor in Titusville, Fla. During the 40's and 50's he owned and operated Chrysler Plymouth agencies in West Virginia. He was secretary and treasurer of Home Builders Association, Titusville, Fla., 100 Club in Titusville, Fla. He was also a leading developer and builder in Titusville, Fla. as Cape Canaveral Space Center was being developed in the 50's and early 60's. He was a member of Freewill Baptist Church in Titusville, Fla. He had owned a coal mining business and a truck leasing business in West Virginia, and was a Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Wingate of Titusville, Fla., two sons, Dan Wingate of Danville, Calif., and Reese Wingate of Titusville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Shawn Wingate, Troy Wingate, Tanya DeValle, and Katie Cullin; and two great-grandchildren, Greg DeValle, and Sabine Wingate; a sister, Artie Austin of Speedwell; and several cousins in Wythe County.

The family suggests that memorial donations may be made to Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice, P.O. Box 565002, Rockledge, FL 32956-5002.

East Coast Cremation in Rockledge, Fla. is in charge of the arrangements.

William Bert Wright

William Bert Wright, 78, of Peppers Ferry Road, Wytheville, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Charles A. McMillen officiating. Interment followed in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late James and Sarah Morris Wright. He was retired from the American Screw Company, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Kelly Wright, Verner Wright, and Dan Wright; and five sisters, Ruby Richardson, Ora Hale, Helen Cartwright, Mamie Hall, and Gertrude Lawson.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth A. and Kathy Wright of Houston, Texas; two daughters and son-in-law, Velma and Walter Jaap of Latrobe, Pa., and Barbara J. and Benjamin Wells of Sutherland; two sisters, Virginia Corder of Baltimore, Md., and Hazel Lawson of Max Meadows; one brother and sister-in-law, Glen A., Sr. and Elizabeth Wright of Max Meadows; a special niece, Doris Newman of Wytheville; and six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund.

Anna Mae Baumgardner

Anna Mae Baumgardner, 95, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, in the Henrico Health Care Center in Highland Springs.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 6, at 3 p.m. at the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat with the Rev. Robert Countiss officiating.

She taught school in Rural Retreat for several years and also at Russell Elementary School, Quantico Marine Base for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles R. and Mary Tobler Baumgardner; and two brothers, Claude Baumgardner, and Master Sergeant Robert C. Baumgardner.

Survivors include two nephews, Robert S. Baumgardner Sr. of Mechanicsville, and Charles R. Baumgardner of Newport News; three nieces, Ann Bittner of Hampton, Peggy Pirhala of Newport News, and Frances Hewitt of Hampton; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Jesse Allen Crawford

Jesse Allen Crawford, 62, of the Cedar Springs Community in Rural Retreat, formerly of Mercer County, W.Va., died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at his home following an illness of about one year.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, June 7, at noon at the Double J Farm at Cedar Springs with the Rev. Bill Perkins officiating.

Born Nov. 9, 1935, at Mercer County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Sam and Ruby Doyle Crawford. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for the Trunbull Corp. and was a member of the Teamster Union for Operator/Engineers Local 132 of Charleston. He was of the Methodist Faith.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Johnson Crawford; a stepson, Phillip Hodges; a brother, Joseph Crawford; and a sister, Margaret Hedrick.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Fisher Hodges-Crawford of Rural Retreat; two daughters and a son-in-law, Bonnie R. and Jeffrey Crawford of Athens, and Barbara Crawford King of Ocean Side, Calif.; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Karen H. and Dr. Paul Williams of Bluffville, Tenn., and Normal Jean and Ronnie Alvis of Athens, W.Va.; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, James Edward and Cindy Hodges of Cripple Creek; six grandchildren, Bobby Lee Crawford, Justin Allen Crawford, Marcus Allen Crawford, Victor Lee Reyes, Adam Paul Williams, and James Tyler Hodges; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Arl Thompson of Millington, Mich., Phylis and Eddie Wimmer of Athens, W.Va., and Connie Angles of Princeton, W.Va.

The family will receive friends Saturday, June 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Directory, Athens Road, Princeton, W.Va.

Ethel Marie Adams Graham

Ethel Marie Adams Graham, 78, of Max Meadows, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 5, at 3 p.m. at the Max Meadows United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Lindamood officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Hugh Preston and Lula Bell Mize Adams and was a member of the Max Meadows United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Abner B. Graham Sr.; and a great-grandson, Joseph Graham Aker.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Bob Collins of Roanoke, and Debby and Wayne Robinson of Herndon; a son and daughter-in-law, Abner Jr. and Sarah Graham of Wytheville; two sisters, Nellie Epperly of Christiansburg, and Beatrice Eversole of Alexandria; and seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Max Meadows United Methodist Church or the Hollins No. 5 Rescue Squad, Barrens Road, Roanoke, VA 24019.

Kenneth W. Hilten

Kenneth W. Hilten, 83, of Falls Church, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 1, at 10 a.m., at the Arlington United Methodist Church, Arlington. Interment was in the National Memorial Park, Arlington.

He was the son of the late W.A. and Susie Spence Hilten of Wythe County.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruby Houseman Hilten; a daughter, Sue Ann Hilten; a grandson, Andrew Gidzinski; one sister, Virginia Favreault; two brothers, Carmen Hilten and Verl Hilton; a son-in-law, Edward Gidzinski; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives in Wythe County.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Arlington United Methodist Church.

Fred James Litz

Fred James Litz, 70, of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 6, at 5 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

He was son of the late French Soloman and Ruth Inez Myers Litz. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat and was a retired employee of Brunswick Inc. in Marion.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Copenhaver Litz; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Sandra Litz of Rural Retreat, and Keith and Dawn Litz of Crockett; four grandchildren, Jason Litz, Ashleigh Litz, Caitlin Litz, and Aaron Litz; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Constance and W.J. Wilkie of St. Petersburg, Fla., Vivian Hampton of Rural Retreat, and Joanne and R.D. Harris Jr. of Matinsville; and an aunt, Pearle Blankenship of Draper.

The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services or to the Grace Lutheran Church Organ Fund.
