Harold Phillip Hodges Jr.

Harold Phillip "Phil" Hodges Jr., 41, of Route 2, Rural Retreat, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Bob Billingsley and the Rev. Bill Perkins. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The American Legion Post No. 229 will conduct graveside military rites. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was a salesman for Wythe-Ford-Mercury and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold P. Hodges Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Vickie Whalen Hodges of Rural Retreat; his mother and step-father, Dorothy Hodges and Jessie Crawford of Rural Retreat; a sister and brother-in-law, Karen H. and Dr. Paul Williams of Blountville, Tenn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Eddie Hodges and Cindy Nester of Cripple Creek; his mother- and father-in-law, Joan and J.R. Whalen of Rural Retreat; nieces and nephews, Cory and Will Whalen, Heather Whalen, Tyler Hodges, and Adam Williams; and two brothers and sister-in-law, Gary Whalen, and James and Susan Whalen.

Flowers will be appreciated, however donations may be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church.

Louise Rhudy Delp Large

Louise Rhudy Delp Large, 67, of Norton, Va., died Monday, July 22, 2002, at Norton Community Hospital, Norton, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 24, at 8 p.m. at the Norton First Church of God with the Rev. William Watson, the Rev. Shawn Easterling and the Rev. Gary Shelton officiating. Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 25, at 11 a.m. in the Mountain View cemetery, Rural Retreat, Va.

Born Aug. 11, 1934, she was a native of Rural Retreat, Va., and resided in Norton, Va., for the past 36 years. She attended the First Church of God in Norton, Va., serving as organist for 17 years. She volunteered her musical talent in various area churches. She was a longtime volunteer at Norton Community Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital.

She is survived her husband, Willie Large of Norton, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Samantha Delp of Norton, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Melita and Jackie Fields of Norton, Va.; grandchildren, Levi Delp, Sarah Delp, Jacob Fields and Abram Fields, all of Norton, Va.; two sisters, Katherine Hines and Esther Rhudy, both of Huntsville, Ala.; and sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy Rhudy of Marion, Va., Carolee Rhudy of Independence, Va., and Sandra and Bob Lewis of Rural Retreat, Va.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Norton First Church of God, Norton, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Norton First Church of God, P.O. Box 857, Norton, VA 24273; or to the Blue Springs United Methodist Church, Rural Retreat, VA 24368.

Brian Eugene Bowersox

Brian Eugene Bowersox, 51, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, July 29, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 1, at 8 p.m. at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion, Va., with the Rev. Nauhad Melki and the Rev. W.T. Meredith officiating. Interment will be private.

He was born in South Bend, Ind., and was employed by American Tire in Wytheville, Va. He had lived in Atkins, Va., for many years before moving to Wytheville, Va. While in Atkins, Va., he attended the Atkins First Church of God and the Liberty Street Church of God in Wytheville, Va. He was a model railroad buff and was an avid church worker.

He was preceded in death by his father, Firman Bowersox.

Survivors include his mother, Lucille Bowersox of Dallas, Texas; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Carol and Robert Siti of Spring, Texas, and Barbara Lambert of Dallas, Texas; two nieces and one nephew and spouse, Jennifer Siti of San Antonio, Texas, Janice Siti of Houston, Texas, and Christopher and Hannah Siti of Humble, Texas; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins in Indiana.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at Bradley's Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to World Services, c/o First Church of God of Atkins, 6118 Lee Highway, Atkins, VA 24311.

Virginia Kathleen Grubb

Virginia Kathleen Grubb, 74, of Elkton Md., formerly of Max Meadows, Va., died Sunday, July 28, 2002.

A memorial service will be held Friday Aug. 2, at 5 p.m. in the Berea Christian Church.

She was a daughter of the late James and Oma Adams Taylor. She was a retired lab technician.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Grubb.

Survivors include her children, Karen L. Reyes of Delaware City, Del., and David A. Grubb of Wilmington, Del.; brothers and sisters, Lacey Taylor and Donald Taylor, both of Elkton, Md., Gene Taylor of Wilkesboro, N.C., Bobby Taylor of Perryville, Md., and Elizabeth Dennison of Long Island, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Dolly Robinson of Wytheville, Va.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Maryland.

Thurman Eugene Thompson

Thurman Eugene "Tater Bug" Thompson, 68, of Bastian, Va., died Monday, July 22, 2002, in St. Luke's Hospital, Bluefield, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 24, at 8 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel with the Rev. Carl Holland officiating. Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 25, at 2 p.m. at the Hoge's Chapel cemetery.

He was born in Bland County, Va., a son of the late Paris Esteele and Nannie Lilly Thompson. He attended Bastian Church of God.

He is survived by a brother, Glen Shuler Thompson of Bland, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel.

Hazel Worrell Kemp

Hazel Worrell Kemp, 89, of Route 1, Draper, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 5, at 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Fogus officiating. Interment was held Monday, Oct. 6, at noon in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Carroll County, the daughter of the late William and Jennie Gilley Worrell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Shelby M. Kemp.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Ethel Kemp of Sylvatus; a special friend, Anna C. Hughes of Max Meadows; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and the caregiver staff of Birdmont Health Care Center.

Alice Elizabeth LeDoyen

Alice Elizabeth LeDoyen, 97, of Wytheville died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Graveside services will be Thursday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. in the Bethel cemetery conducted by Rev. Michael Hoyle.

She is survived by one daughter, Louise Shortt of Wytheville; two sisters, Virginia Arnold of Wytheville, and Rena Farris of San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren, Mildred Corvin, Eleanor Brown, Grant Ring Jr., and Imogene Orfield; three great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Alma Pauline Miller Saferight

Alma Pauline Miller Saferight, 87, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, in the Edgemont Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with Pastor Edward Schaack officiating. Interment followed in the East End cemetery.

She was born in West Virginia, a daughter of the late George B. and Minnie Kincer Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Saferight; one sister, Agnes Miller; and one brother, Orbin Miller.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Joseph Akers of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Elwood and Barbara Saferight of Rural Retreat; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one niece, Norma Jean Jones of Wytheville; and one nephew, Clinton Webb of Wytheville.

Billy Gordon Suthers

Billy Gordon Suthers, 69, of Buena Vista, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Butch Grow officiating. Interment followed at the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens.

He was born in Pulaski County on Feb. 25, 1928. He was retired from Bonded Fibers and was a member of the Buena Vista Fire Department. After retirement he was a part-time employee of Burger King.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles R. Suthers; and a brother, Howard R. Suthers.

Survivors include his mother, Ruby Huff Suthers of Wytheville; his sister, Dorothy Lindamood of Mt. Airy, N.C.; his wife, Adeline Hamblin Suthers of Buena Vista; a daughter, LeAnn Clark of Buena Vista; three sons, Randy Suthers, David Suthers, and Robbie Suthers all of Buena Vista; and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Buena Vista Fire Department.

Leona Lewis Coleman

Leona Lewis Coleman, 80, of Route 3, Wytheville, the Piney Community, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Carrico and the Rev. Kenny Fields officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Charles B. and Katherine Lewis. She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church for more than 49 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Arthur Coleman; two sisters, Ruth Blair and Mona Akers; and four brothers, Kent Lewis, Walter Lewis, Willard Lewis and the Rev. Gene Lewis.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Janice "Nancy" Thomas of Radford, and Janet and John L. Aker of Draper; seven sons and daughters-in-law, James A. and Juanita Coleman of Max Meadows, Clinton L. and Peggy Coleman of Wytheville, Franklin and Sue Coleman of Austinville, J. Leonard and Jane Coleman of Max Meadows, Ronnie and Karen Coleman, Ralph and Becky Coleman, and David and Audrey Coleman, all of Wytheville; a sister-in-law, Virgie Lewis of North Carolina; a brother-in-law, Harry Blair of Route 3, Wytheville; and 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o of Thomas Dalton, Route 3, Box 581, Wytheville, VA 24382, or Wythe-Bland Hospice, P.O. Box 381, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Bessie Davis Felty

Bessie Davis Felty, 86, of Wytheville, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. at Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Sproule officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview cemetery.

She was born Dec. 7, 1910 in Wythe County, the ninth child of the late William T. and Permelia Ann Davis. She was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1941, at age 29, Martin Luther Felty; and five sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Mary Ellen Canipe, and Lois Martin and William Seagle, all of Wytheville; one granddaughter and spouse, Melissa Martin and Frank Cole of High Point, N.C.; one grandson, Gregory Alan Canipe of Wytheville; one great-granddaughter, Chandler Paige Cole of High Point, N.C.; and a special friend, Lucille Cassell of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home Saturday, Oct. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. or at the residence at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Fairview cemetery Fund, 885 N. 6th St., Wytheville, VA 24382.
