Mae B. Jenkins

Mae B. Jenkins, 86, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Haskett officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was a member of the Rural Retreat Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Mozelle Bridges of Rural Retreat; one daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Tom Miller of Quarryville, Pa.; two sisters, Sarah Yonce of Wytheville, and Della Parks of Crockett; and eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home, or at the residence of her son, Fred Bridges, at any time.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Baptist Church.

Marie Bonardi Kennedy

Marie "Kitten" Bonardi Kennedy, 80, of Knoxville, Tenn., died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1997, at Baptist Hospital Care Center in Lenoir City, Tenn.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 7, at Gallaher Memorial Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tenn., with the Rev. A.L. Newbert officiating. Interment was held Friday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. in Sunset cemetery, Madisonville, Tenn.

She was a graduate of Hiwassee College and was retired from United Mine Workers of America.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alphonzo and Leantha Hicks Bonardi; and a brother, Lewis Bonardi.

Survivors include her husband, C.A. (Cicero) Kennedy of Knoxville, Tenn.; a son, Joseph Michael Kennedy of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Reed Wohlford of Wytheville; and three nieces, Wanda Sheffey, Connie Sawyers, both of Wytheville, and Teana Hale of Crockett.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holston Home for Children, P.O. Box 188, Greenville, TN 37744-9982.

Fred Henry Rich

Fred Henry Rich, 84, of Royersford, Pa., formerly of Wythe County, died Friday, Aug. 8, 1997, in the Sanatoga Manor.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Holcombe Funeral Home, Collegeville, Pa.

He was a retired employee of Goodrich Tire Company, and was a well-known bee keeper and was until recently an active member of Bee Keepers of America. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Yonce Rich of Royersford; a son and daughter-in-law, John Henry and Pat Rich of Royersford; three sisters, Mae Jenkins, Della Parks, both of Rural Retreat, and Sarah Yonce of Wytheville; and three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

The Holcombe Funeral Home in Collegeville, Pa. was in charge of the arrangements.

Irene R. Terry

Irene R. Terry, 63, of Louisville, Ohio, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, in the Cleveland Clinic.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville. Interment will follow in the Hidden Valley cemetery No. 2.

She was born in Wilcoe, W.Va., on Nov. 29, 1933, to the late Charles Glen and Cornellis Day Rose. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Louisville, Ohio.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond Terry of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Timothy (Shirley) Monnoy of East Canton, Ohio, and Mrs. David (Teresa) Welch of Louisville, Ohio; two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond Jr. and Wilda Terry, and Michael and Stacy Terry, all of Louisville, Ohio; four sisters, Pauline Riley, Georgia Finley, Thelma Jewel, all of North Carolina, and Kupie Keen of Virginia; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 15, from 11 a.m. until service time at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Hazel Robinson Williams

Hazel Robinson Williams, 87, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late William S. and Minnie Frye Robinson and was retired from the Jafree Shirt Company. She was a member of the Evergreen United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest L. Williams; and four sisters, and three brothers.

Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Roscoe and Margaret Robinson of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Helen Ruth Boyles

Helen Ruth Boyles, 74, of Asheboro, N.C., died Thursday, July 3, 1997, at her home.

Funeral services were Sunday, July 6, at 2 p.m. at the Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Asheboro, N.C., with the Rev. Junior Dawkins officiating. Graveside services were Sunday at 5 p.m. at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church cemetery in Cripple Creek.

She was a native of Wythe County and retired from Crawford Knitting. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Cline.

Survivors include her former husband, Donald Hurley of Asheboro, N.C.; three daughters, Joann Foland, Evelyn Thomas, and Louise Hill, all of Asheboro, N.C.; two sisters, June McComas of Princeton, W.Va., and Dixie Jo Acree of Grayville, Ill.; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204.

Ridge Funeral Home in Asheboro, N.C. was in charge of the arrangements.

Wayne Eugene Corvin

Wayne Eugene "Gene" Corvin, 54, of Wytheville, died Sunday, July 6, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 9, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Galilee Christian Church cemetery.

He was retired from the Virginia Department of Highways.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Sherri Corvin of Independence; one daughter and son-in-law, Tracie L. and Matt Byrd of Chilhowie; one sister, Dorothy Hoback of Wytheville; one brother, Randolph Corvin of Wytheville; and two granddaughters, Alicia L. Jones and Crystal Corvin.

Mary Frances Newberry Granberg

Mary Frances Newberry Granberg, 84, of Brian Center, Fincastle, died Sunday, July 6, 1997.

Graveside services and interment were held Tuesday, July 8, at 4 p.m. at the Mechanicsburg cemetery with Tom Turner officiating.

She was born in Kentucky, Dec. 16, 1912, a daughter of the late Jesse H. Newberry and Mollie Stafford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Erik Granberg; and children.

Survivors include six grandchildren, Sharon L. Terry, Karen K. Turner, Barbara L. Cook, Rhonda A. Toro, and Eric A. Kuykendall; eight great-grandchildren, Travis S. Turner, S. Paul Reid, Jesse S. Terry, Carrie A. Toro, Melissa N. Toro, Stephanie R. Kuykendall, Erik M. Kuykendall, and Roni E. Kuykendall; and a cousin, Park Bogle of Pulaski.

Samuel Terry Monday

Samuel Terry Monday, 52, of Rural Route 3, Wytheville, died Monday, July 7, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 11, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Blankenship and the Rev. Donald C. Nance officiating. Interment will follow in the Monday Family cemetery.

He was the operator of Monday's Garage.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Sue Cook Monday; three daughters and son-in-law, Rebecca Dawn Monday, Patricia Dawn Monday, both of Wytheville, and Becky and Don McGraw of Max Meadows; one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel J. and Heather Monday of Max Meadows; his mother, Hazel Stoots Monday Rutledge of Sedalia, Mo.; five sisters, Brenda Gail Adams of Dublin, Becky Adams of Max Meadows, Kay Harmon of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Valeria Crawford of Savannah, Ga., and Joncie Bressi of Quebec, Canada; two brothers, Rev. G.T. Monday of Wytheville, and Hal Monday of Max Meadows; and two grandchildren, Kayla Monday of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Dakota Monday of Max Meadows.

Friends may call Thursday, July 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Millard Ellis Myers

Millard Ellis "Huckleberry" Myers, 93, of Bland, died Friday, July 4, 1997, in Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 6, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Eddie Dalton and Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial was in the Myers Family cemetery, Route 2, Bland.

He was born April 1, 1904, at Crandon, the son of the late Gordon William and Laura Blankenship Myers.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Nina Jane Saunders and Merrell Gaye Burton.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Jessie White Myers of Bland; six sons and daughters-in-law, George Byron and Nancy Myers of Bluefield, W.Va., Rev. William O. and Dessie Myers of Parrott, Richard and Brenda Myers of Princeton, W.Va., James R. Myers of Bland; D.A. and Debi Myers of Bland, and Raymond and Jane Myers of Floyd; three daughters and sons-in-law, Loetta J. and Paige Welsh of Four Oaks, N.C., Faye and Robert Burton of Bland, and Julia and Wayne Acors of Ruther Glen; 23 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Bland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 10, Bastian, VA 24314.

Carl Wayne Parks

Carl Wayne Parks, 57, of Roanoke, died Thursday, July 3, 1997.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 7, at noon at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. Mark Washington and the Rev. Charles "Chip" Doyle officiating. Burial was in Sherwood Memorial Park.

He served as chairman of deacons, teacher of the Praying Hands Sunday school class, and a member of the Joyful Servants class at the Hollins Road Baptist Church, Roanoke.

He was preceded in death by infant sons, Donald Edward Parks and Anthony Wayne Parks; his parents, Matthew and Daisy Parks; and two brothers, Alfred Parks and Howard Parks.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Parks of Roanoke, formerly of Max Meadows; a sister, Virginia St. Clair; three brothers, Corbin Parks, John Parks, and Carson Parks. Among his survivors are brothers-in-law and spouses, Joe and Alice Parks of Salem, formerly of Max Meadows, and Bobby and Hilda Parks of Ceres, formerly of Max Meadows; a sister-in-law and spouse, Audrey and Warren Thompson of Max Meadows; and several aunts, nieces and nephews.

Lotz Roanoke Chapel in Roanoke was in charge of the arrangements.

Albert Gilmer Updyke

Albert Gilmer Updyke, 83, of Bland, died Saturday, July 5, 1997.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel, Bland, with the Rev. Curt McKee officiating. Interment followed in the Updyke Family cemetery.

He was a lifelong resident of Bland County and a member of Crandon Presbyterian Church. He attended VPI as a young man and returned home to manage the family farm. He was a director of Dublin Livestock Market and had served as director of the Bland County Bank. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the American Hereford Cattlemen's Association and a director of Bland County Fair Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Junius Marcellus and Ada Lee Davis Updyke; and one brother, Junius Davis Updyke.

Survivors include one brother, Garland L. Updyke of Hernando, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Jack (Edith) Harmon of Bristol, and Ethel Shaver of Blountville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to Bland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 10, Bastian, VA 24314.
