Jamie Darren Collins, 24, of Route 1, Draper, died Saturday, July 19, 1997, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Memorial services were held Monday, July 21, at 8 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.

He was born in Wytheville, on July 20, 1972.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alex R. Collins and Mary Alice Doss Collins of Max Meadows.

Survivors include his mother, Darlene Asbury Vaught of Draper; his father, Douglas C. Collins of Pulaski; his stepmother, Mary L. Collins of Pulaski; one sister, Shenia Early of Princeton, W.Va.; two stepsisters, Kimberly R. Carroll of Pembroke, and Pamela Mendenhall of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and his grandparents, Albert Lee Asbury of Austinville, and Virginia Graham Asbury of Austinville.

Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski was in charge of the arrangements.

Carolyn Porter Crockett

Carolyn Porter Crockett, 56, of Richmond, formerly Cripple Creek, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997.

Memorial services were held Saturday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Richmond, and on Saturday, July 26, 1 p.m. at Crockett's Chapel, Cripple Creek. Interment will follow in the Crockett Family cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert S. and Blanche Porter; and a sister, Martha Padgett.

Survivors include her husband, J.D. Crockett; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Shelia Crockett of St. Stephen's Church; two daughters and son-in-law, Jill and Mark Moon of Lanexa, and Leslie Crockett of Richmond; two grandchildren, Samantha Ashley Moon, and Dwight Damron; one sister, Sue Ayers of Rural Retreat; and four brothers, Norris Porter of Durham, N.C., Bobby Porter of Mayodan, N.C., Bruce Porter of Rural Retreat, and Jerry Porter of Cripple Creek.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Good Shepherd United Methodist Church building fund, 9155 Hungry Road, Richmond, VA 23294; Crockett Chapel United Methodist Church, Cripple Creek, VA 24322; or Bon Secours Hospice, St. Mary's Hospital, 5801 Bremo Road, Richmond, VA 23294.

Bonnie N. Croy

Bonnie N. Croy, 80, of West Branch, Iowa, died Monday, July 14, 1997, in Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa, following an extended illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 17, at 2 p.m., at the Barker Funeral Home, West Branch, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard M. Paulus officiating. Burial was in the West Branch cemetery, West Branch, Iowa.

She was born Sept. 8, 1916, at Banner Elk, N.C., a daughter of William and Hessie Oliver Gwyn. On June 5, 1948, she was married to William L. Croy in Bland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, two brothers, a sister, and a great-granddaughter.

Survivors include four daughters, Doris Connell, Paulette Broyles, both of West Branch, Iowa, Willie Sue Wolfe of Bastian, and Adina Croy, who is stationed in San Diego, Calif. with the U.S. Navy; four sons, James, Dean Woody, Ronnie Croy, all of West Branch, Iowa, and Gil Woody of Iowa City, Iowa; two sisters, Jean Lawson, and Peggy Payton, both of Bassett; two brothers, Jack Gwyn of Bastian, and Roy Gwyn of Roanoke; and 19 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.

Barker Funeral Home in West Branch, Iowa, was in charge of the arrangements.

Beatrice Campbell Dalton

Beatrice Campbell Dalton, 80, of Ivanhoe, died Friday, July 18, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 21, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Taz Reid and the Rev. Bruce Sheets officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Van and Jane Combs Campbell, and was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bryant Campbell and Swanson Campbell; two sisters, Lillian Waller and Georgia King.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Charlene and Roy Herron of Ivanhoe, and Betty Campbell of Woodlawn; two sisters, Wanda Jackson of Max Meadows, and Magdelene Dalton of Ashtabula, Ohio; four grandchildren, Ronda Dunford, Teany Lawson, Tracie LaTurno, and Marty Herron; five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, three step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.

Cloyd Swanson Dean

Cloyd Swanson Dean, 81, of Route 1, Austinville, died Friday, July 18, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at the Allison Chapel Church of God with the Rev. Raymond Coake and the Rev. R.J. Buttery officiating. Interment followed in the Pine Grove cemetery in Carroll County.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Cavin and Minnie Frazier Dean. He was a member of the Allison Chapel Church of God and was retired from the New Jersey Zinc Company.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lessie Dean; and a son, Charles Edward Dean.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Dean of the home; five daughters and sons-in-law, Elsie Mae Quessenberry, Nellie Frances and Roy Stone, all of Pulaski, Willie Florence and Jimmy Sonner of Galax, Ruth Ann Dean of Wytheville, and Betty Sue and Leonard Sonner of Thomasville, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carlton Andrew and Roberta Dean of Austinville, and Rev. Billy and Phyllis Dean of Route 2, Max Meadows; two step-daughters and husbands, Glenna and George Coleman of Deland, Fla., and Shereall and Cullen Ball of Delbarton, W.Va.; two stepsons and stepdaughter-in-law, Willard and Carol Moore of Turkey Creek, Ky., and Danny Lee Moore of Lenore, W.Va.; three sisters, Hazel Parks of Mooresville, N.C., Annie Casey, and Naomi Williams, both of Thomasville, N.C.; one brother, Henry Dean of Thomasville, N.C.; and 27 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

James A. Green Sr.

Rev. James A. Green Sr., 91, of Roanoke, formerly of Wytheville, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997.

Funeral services will be Thursday, July 24, at 2 p.m. at the New Life Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church, Airport Road, Roanoke, with the Rev. Walter L. Wood officiating. Interment services will be Thursday at 4 p.m. in the Appalachian Conference cemetery, Dublin.

He lived in Wytheville from 1962 to 1987. He was a graduate of Emmanuel College, Franklin Springs, Ga., and the Holmes Theological Seminary, Greeneville, S.C. A longtime pastor in the Pentecostal Holiness Church, he served congregations in Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ivan M. Green.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Thelma Foreman Green; his sons and their wives, the Rev. Ralph V. and Yvonne Green of Shenandoah, Edwin and Janet Green of Roanoke, and James A. Jr. and Pat Green of Wytheville; his daughter and her husband, Harriet and Joe Rogers of Troutville; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, the Rev. W. Julius Green of Richmond; and his sisters, Rebecca Green and Hanah G. Daniel, both of Dry Fork.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel, Roanoke.

Shirley Gray Spencer

Shirley Gray Spencer, 53, of Wytheville, died Friday, July 18, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 22, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Roger Crigger officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Flora Lessie Kincer Gray, a twin sister, and a brother, Lee Gray.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Helen W. Stevens of Austinville, Darlene and Michael Mason, and Shelia and Ronald Crigger, all of Wytheville; one son, James Douglas Spencer of Wytheville; her father, Daniel C. Gray of Austinville; five sisters, Nancy G. McFarland of Austinville, Eva Grubb of Crockett, Flora Smith of Salem, Frances Wright of Shawsville, and Mae Barton of Wytheville; two brothers, Junior Gray of Austinville, and George Gray of Crockett; and six grandchildren.

Emma Sarah Edmonds

Emma Sarah Edmonds, 76, of Rt. 2, Max Meadows, Patterson community, died Tuesday, July 15, 1997, in the Radford Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 18, at 11 a.m., at the Glenwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Edwin Doerr Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Luther and Lucy Spencer Edmonds.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Nelson and Mary Alice Edmonds of Rt. 4, Hillsville; a sister, Dorothy M. Edmonds of Rt. 2, Max Meadows; a brother, Warren E. Edmonds of Rt. 2, Max Meadows; two grandchildren, Sarah Edmonds of Rt. 4, Hillsville, and Barry Edmonds of Draper; one great-grandson, Bradley Edmonds of Draper; and many nieces and nephews.

Mabel Jean Harmon Fisher

Mabel Jean Harmon Fisher, 58, of Rt. 3, Wytheville, West Piney community, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 19, at 2 p.m., at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bobby Lewis, the Rev. Lewis Arnold and the Rev. A.C. Ashford officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Otis Patrick and Virginia Ellen Akers Harmon, and was a member of the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was employed by Wythe County Community Hospital in environmental service.

She is survived by her husband, Reed C. Fisher of the home; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Flora Mae Simmons of Rt. 3, Wytheville, and Dorothy and Leon Freeman of Austinville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Otis Edgar and Ruth Harmon of Wytheville, Elmo and Margaret Harmon of Rt. 3, Wytheville, and David D. and Barbara Harmon of Fries; and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Mary Katherine Frye Guin

Mary Katherine Frye Guin, formerly of Independence, died Jan. 23, 1997, in the Vista Hostage of Houston, Texas.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 19, at 2 p.m. at the Flat Rock United Methodist Church near Independence.

She was the daughter of Ruth Fulton Frye, a former teacher at Independence High School, and Richard Guy Frye of Cripple Creek, and Ravenna, Ohio. Her grandparents were Margaret Huddle Fulton and the Honorable Samuel Montreville Fulton of Independence, and Fannie Fisher Frye and Samuel Thomas Frye of Cripple Creek. She traced direct lineage through her great-great-grandfather, John Earhart, to the late Amelia Earhart. Following graduation as valedictorian from Independence High School in 1944 she attended Berea College in Kentucky receiving a bachelor's degree in chemistry. She received a master's degree in organic chemistry from the University of Alabama and a doctorate from the University of Texas. For a number of years she was a chemist for the Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge, Tenn. In 1993 she retired as senior staff research chemist at the Westhollow Research Center, Shell Development Company of Houston, Texas, where she was employed for over 25 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; a brother, Samuel Guy Frye of Pulaski and Independence; and several aunts and uncles including John Paul Fulton of Independence and Dr. Reid Stranger Fulton, a professor at Columbia University in New York, N.Y., and of Max Meadows.

Survivors include her husband, Budd C. Guin of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Margaret Frye Holmes of Rochester, N.Y., and Hallie Guiese Frye Huddle of Wythe County; two nieces, Kay Frye Gallimore of Floyd, and Rebecca Sue Huddle of Wytheville; two nephews, Robert Edward Lee Huddle III of Indian Valley, and Jeb Stuart Earhart Huddle of Wytheville; an uncle, Thomas Brown Frye of Abbs Valley; and a number of relatives and friends in both Wythe and Grayson Counties.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Katherine Frye Guin Memorial Fund, Berea College, CPO 2316, Berea, KY 40404, or the Flat Rock United Methodist Church, c/o Bayne Sumner, Rt. 2, Box 782, Independence, VA 24348.

Mary Ruth Mabe Shepherd

Mary Ruth Mabe Shepherd, 92, of Dublin, formerly of Rt. 2, Max Meadows, the Browntown community, died Tuesday, July 15, 1997, in the Radford Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 18, at 2 p.m., at the Coulson Church of the Brethren with the Pastor Russel R. Payne Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the Mabe Family cemetery.

She was born in Carroll County, the daughter of the late John and Lilly Coulson Mabe, and was a member of the Coulson Church of the Brethren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Shepherd; three sons, Gene, Paul, and Buddy Joe Shepherd; a granddaughter, Penny Littreal; and a grandson, Michael Shepherd.

Survivors include a granddaughter and husband, Patsy and Ronnie Cavicchia of Bellaire, Ohio; a grandson and wife, Douglas and Peggy Shepherd of Dalzell, S.C.; seven great-grandchildren; best friends and niece, Ralph and Ethylene Wilson of Dublin; and several nieces and nephews.

Estil McKinley Blankenship

Estil McKinley Blankenship, 52, of Bastian, died Friday, July 11, 1997, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 14, at 2 p.m. in the Bastian Church of God with Pastor Bill Hand, the Rev. John Smith and the Rev. Mike Bradshaw officiating. Interment was in the Rose Hill cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Shelby Blankenship; four daughters, Kimberly Blankenship of Freemont, Ohio, Ashely Blankenship of Bastian, Priscella Taylor of Wytheville, and Judy Patterson of Olin, N.C.; his mother, Geneva Dykes Blankenship of Bluefield; one sister, Linda C. Berry of Nikina, N.C.; two brothers, Raymond L. Blankenship of Lexington, N.C. and Mike Blankenship of Bastian; a special niece, Shelby D. Bowles of Wytheville; two special nephews, Daniel Bowles of Lexington, and Terry Wayne Blankenship of Lexington, N.C.; and several other nieces and nephews.
