John Earnest Hall

John Earnest Hall, 79, of Route 2, Max Meadows, the Sanders Mines Community, died Friday, March 6, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 9, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Interment followed in the Sanders cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late James Walter Hall and Nora Bland Hall. He was retired from the Coleman Furniture Company.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, two sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Captola Crawford Hall of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Shirley Jean and Larry Davis of Max Meadows, and Nellie Grace Pendleton; two sons and daughter-in-law, Ronnie Wayne Hall, and John Jason and Jennifer Hall, all of Max Meadows; a special grandson, Matthew Spence; two great-granddaughters, Logan Rae Hall and Brittany Crowder; two sisters, Rosie Davis of Wytheville, and Ovella Turner of Suffolk; one brother, Fred Hall of Tennessee; and several grandchildren and host of nieces and nephews.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville is in charge of the arrangements.

William Henry Hall

William Henry "Bill" Hall, 76, of Wytheville, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 4, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Kenneth Fogus officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was born in Wytheville, a son of the late Ernest and Bessie Jackson Hall and was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Goodman Hall of Wytheville; two daughters and son-in-law, Linda Stamper, and Brenda and Ronnie Joe Rodgers, all of Wytheville; two stepdaughters, Mary Frances Parris Grubb of Columbia, S.C., and Kathleen Parris Wheeler of Wytheville; two stepsons, Edward Parris of Greenville, S.C., and Fred Parris of Dublin; a sister Mary Sue Funk of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Ricky Rogers, Mark Rogers and Stacy Rogers; and six step-granddaughters and eight step-grandsons.

The family suggest that those who prefer may make memorials to Joy Ranch, P.O. Box 727, Hillsville, VA 24343.

Joseph Anthony Italiano

Joseph Anthony Italiano, 66, of Bowie, Md., died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, in the Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 23, at Saint Edward's The Confessor Catholic Church, Bowie, Md. Interment followed at Resurrection cemetery, Clinton, Md.

He was a graduate of Saint John's College HS and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He retired in 1994 after 35 years of federal service including 31 years with the U.S. House of Representatives. He was a member of Saint Edwards Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Fleet Reserve Club, and served on various citizen association boards.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph A. Sr. and Josephine Italiano; and his father- and mother-in-law, Boyd and Virgie Lanter of Wytheville.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Katherine Lanter Italiano; three children, Terri Gibson of Lothian, Md., Mark Italiano of Laurel, Md., and Lisa Greenlee of Gaithersburg, Md.; five grandchildren, Katie, Gibson, Courtney Gibson, Christopher Gibson, Justine Italiano, and Eric Greenlee; a brother, Francis M. Italiano of District Heights, Md.; three sisters-in-law, Alma Lanter Blasingame, Cora Lanter Barron, and Nancy Lanter Hansard; and a brother-in-law, Harold R. Lanter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 714 B&A Blvd., Severna Park, MD 21146.

Charles Curtis Mast Sr.

Charles Curtis Mast Sr. of Blacksburg, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at his home.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 10, at 11 a.m. at Blacksburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Hobbs officiating. Interment followed in the Westview cemetery, Blacksburg.

He was born in Princess Anne County to the late Charles Howard and Ella Mildred Curtis Mast. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. He retired from the faculty at Virginia Tech and was a pioneer in the Agriculture Extension Service, making significant contributions to the beef cattle and sheep industries in the state of Virginia. He was a member of Blacksburg United Methodist Church, the Blacksburg Rotary and Sports Clubs, and the Old Guard of VPI&SU.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Ashworth Mast of Blacksburg, a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Curtis Jr. and Nga Pham Mast of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn Mast and Lorne Wenzel of Naples, Fla.; three granddaughters, Anne Wenzel, Lorna Wenzel, and Sarah Wenzel, all of Naples, Fla.; two brothers, Howard Mast of Sulfolk, and Clyde Mast of Gainesville, Fla.; and a sister, Elizabeth Mast Halstead of Atlanta, Ga.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, P.O. Box 3754, Radford, VA 24143.

Helen Virginia Rhodes Miller

Helen Virginia Rhodes Miller, 63, of Route 1, Rural Retreat, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 12, at 1 p.m. at the Sharon Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Hoyle and the Rev. Fred L. Jennings officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

She was born in Pageton, W.Va., the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Effie Rae Blankenship Rhodes. She was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church in Rural Retreat and was a retired employee of the Wythe County School System.

She was preceded in death by a half-sister, Jean Sproles.

Survivors include her husband, Charles W. Miller of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Allen Widner of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell B. Miller of Rural Retreat, and Etthan C. and Jennifer Miller of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one grandson, Airman 1st Class Matthew D. Miller of the Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Wash.; and three brothers, Blaine I. Rhodes of Rural Retreat, Bobby L. Rhodes of Crockett, and C. Walter Rhodes of Thonotosassa, Fla.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Hospice of America or to the Sharon Baptist Church cemetery Fund.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Constance Louise Muncy

Constance Louise Muncy, 65, of Bland, died Monday, March 9, 1998, in the St. Luke Hospital in Bluefield, W.Va.

Memorial services will be held Friday, March 13, at 11 a.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. June Miller and the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating.

She was born in Bluefield, W.Va., the daughter of the late Clarence and Edna Clark Evans.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Carter Muncy.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce Carter Muncy of Virginia Beach, and Mark Christopher Muncy of Bland; two grandchildren, Walker Muncy and Pearce Muncy of Virginia Beach; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ellen and Larry Walls of Bland, Ruth Muncy of Grundy, Ann Monti of Bland and Charles Raymond Muncy; and various nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Granville Lee Scott

Granville Lee Scott, 62, of Wytheville, died Monday, March 9, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 13, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Doug Stuart. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Aileen Kegley; and a brother, Charles Stroupe.

Survivors include one daughter, Connie Jean Miles of Wytheville; two grandchildren, Lisa Marie Rosenbaum of Christiansburg, and Alan Dale Rosenbaum of Wytheville; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Gracie and Aubrey Nuckols of Louisa, Ina Gay and Frank Robertson of Speedwell, and Jeanette Irvin of Wytheville; one sister-in-law, Betty Stroupe of Speedwell; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Hazel Louise Stoots

Hazel Louise Stoots, 82, of Austinville, died Friday, March 6, 1998, in Edgemont Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 9, at 11 a.m. at Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. A.C. Ashford officiating. Interment followed in the Bethany cemetery.

She was born in Austinville, a daughter of the late John Henry Stoots and Mary Rae Austin Stoots. She was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a retired clerical worker for New Jersey Zinc Company.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie Stoots and Carrie G. Stoots; four brothers, Glen Stoots, Julian Stoots, Joe Stoots, and John Henry Stoots Jr.

Survivors include one sister, Rose S. Tester of Austinville; one brother, Edward C. Stoots of Austinville; one sister-in-law, Mary Stoots of Austinville; two nieces, Mary Jo Wikle of Pulaski, and Carolyn Arnold of Max Meadows; one nephew, Larry Thacker of Max Meadows; a special great-great-nephew, Zachary Cooley; and a special lifetime best friend, Iva J. Lindamood.

Helen Jones Carter

Helen Jones Carter, 73, of Gloucester, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, at the Greenville Villa.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted Thursday, July 30, at 11 a.m. in the Rosewell Memorial Gardens, Gloucester Point.

A native of Wythe County, she spent her youth in Wytheville. She lived most of her adult life in the Tidewater area of Virginia and had been a resident of the Greenville area for the past six years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip E. Carter Sr., in 1988.

Survivors include three daughters, Susan C. Mortenson of Laramie, Wyo., Christy Carter of Greenville, N.C., and Carolyn C. O'Riley of Yorktown; two sons, Philip E. Carter Jr. of Hampton, and Jeff Carter of Hayes; three brothers, Hershal Jones, Luther Jones, and Muncey Jones, all of Wytheville; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home in Gloucester Point.

Lula Wages Crockett

Lula Wages Crockett, 78, of Detroit, Mich., formerly of Wythe County, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, in the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich.

A graveside service was held Sunday, July 26, at 4 p.m. at the Crockett Family cemetery in Austinville, with the Rev. Eugene Crockett officiating.

She was born in South Carolina, a daughter of the late John H. and Carrie Outtin Wages.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Crockett.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Fentry Martin of Detroit, Mich.; three sons, Paris Crockett of Los Angeles, Calif., Tyrone Crockett, and William Crockett, both of Detroit, Mich.; one sister, Pearl Morris of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Nathaniel Wages, and James Wages, both of Washington, D.C.; a host of grandchildren, other relatives and other friends.

James Benjamin Holston

James Benjamin "Jim" Holston, 85, of Rural Retreat, died Friday, July 24, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Will Shewey, the Rev. Hubert Meadows, and the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Interment followed in the Black Lick cemetery in Rural Retreat.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Ellis Marco and Della Leffler Holston.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Long Holston.

Survivors include four daughters, Nancy Jean Wells of Murrayville, Ga., Joyce Della Major, Connie Lou Catron, and Wanda Sheets Potts, all of Rural Retreat; three sons, Randall Lee Gordon, Jesse Marco Holston, and John Ray Holston, all of Rural Retreat; three sisters, Mary H. Gordon, Cynthia H. Walton, both of Rural Retreat, and Virginia H. Hurley of Austinville; 10 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services, the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Dept., or the Rural Retreat Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund, c/o Rev. Roger Crigger, Route 2, Box 23 C, Rural Retreat, VA 23468.

Harold Leon Louthen Jr.

Harold Leon Louthen Jr., 44, of Vinton, died Thursday, July 16, 1998.

A graveside service was conducted Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m. in the West End cemetery, Wytheville.

He was born on Nov. 14, 1953, and was a George Wythe High School graduate.

He is survived by his parents, Harold Leon Sr. and Ethel Williams Louthen of Wytheville; a son, Justin Louthen of High Point, N.C.; a daughter, Morgan Louthen of Roanoke; a sister, Jeanne C. Staley of Smith Mountain Lake; and a nephew, Jason Staley of Roanoke.
