Belle Nixon

Belle Nixon, 88, of Route 1, Austinville (the Bethany Community), died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, in the Waddell Nursing Home in Galax.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Larry Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.

She was born in Carroll County, a daughter of the late Richard M. and Rielda Bryant. She was a member of the Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Nixon, three sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Junior Chandler of Archdale, N.C., and Dorothy and Donald Grimes of Woodlawn; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Alma Nixon of Radford, and Jimmy and Doris Nixon of Yanceyville, N.C.; three granddaughters and spouses, Diane and Mike Atkinson, Kimberly and Frankie Chriscoe, and Regina and David McCormick; three grandsons and spouses, Tony and Wilma Nixon, Connie and Regina Grimes and Rick Chandler; and nine great-grandchildren, Seth Atkinson, Abbey Atkinson, Christie Nixon, Kyle Nixon, Michael Wilson, Justin Grimes, Jonathan Grimes, Ashley McCormick and Holly McCormick; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggest that those who prefer may make memorials to the Popular Camp Church of God of Prophecy.

Woodrow Wilson Sparks

Woodrow Wilson Sparks, 73, of Wytheville died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, in the Bluefield Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. G.T. Monday officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late John and Minerva Morris Sparks.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearlie Mae Coley Sparks.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary E. and Harvey Davis of Max Meadows, and Aileen E. and Beryl Workman of Wytheville; three sons and daughter-in-law, Randolph W. and Doris M. Sparks of Hillsville, Daniel Lee Sparks of Abingdon, Tommy Lee Sparks of Wytheville; a sister, Mary Julia Smith of Wytheville; and a brother, William Sparks of Elkton, Md.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Jo Ann Maxey Wright

Jo Ann Maxey Wright, 62, of Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at her residence.

A graveside service was held Monday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger officiating.

She was born in Smyth County, the daughter of the late J. Homer and Carrie Pickle Maxey. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, James W. "Bill" Maxey and Richard C. Maxey.

Survivors include her husband, James W. "Edward" Wright Sr. of the home; two daughters, Ellen D. Wright of Floyd and Amy L. Pettinato of Phoenix, Arz.; one son, Mark J. Wright of Radford; two sisters, Ethel M. Burkett of Rural Retreat, and Lola M. Smith of Glade Spring; two brothers, Frank Maxey and John Maxey, both of Rural Retreat; special friends and caregivers, Helen and Kenneth Craver of Rural Retreat; and five grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Miranda Lee Sutphin

Miranda Lee Sutphin, 20, of Barren Springs, died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Don Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in the Sutphin Family cemetery.

She was employed at the Blacksburg University Bookstore and attended Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She is survived by her mother, Brenda Sutphin of Barren Springs; aunts, uncles and their spouses, Joyce and Tommy Hodge of Barren Springs, Violet and Jessie Hollingsworth of Barren Springs, Linda and Scott Parks of Galax, Terri and Darrell Turner of Christiansburg, Marvin "Junior" and Brenda Cook of Draper, and Mike and Sheila Eversole of Max Meadows.

Joyce Meadows Altizer

Joyce "Joy" Meadows Altizer, 54, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 6, at 8 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dennis Mulligan. Interment was held Friday, Aug. 7, in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Glenda Altizer of Wytheville; two sons, Gary "Jody" Altizer Jr. and Greg Altizer, both of Wytheville; four sisters, Faye Smith and Judy Dixon, both of Pearisburg, Shirley McDaniel of Narrows, and Carolyn Hammil of Inwood, W.Va.; two brothers, Clifton "Tony" Meadows of Pearisburg and Earl "Bo" Meadows of Jacksonville, Fla.; her mother, Mamie Meadows of Pearisburg; two grandchildren, Amanda Altizer and Cody Altizer, both of Wytheville; and a special niece and nephew, Linda "Penny" Crigger, and David "Pooh" Crigger, both of Wytheville.

Malcolm Ernest Blevins

Malcolm Ernest Blevins, 66, of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, at 4 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Conley and Frances Louise Smith Blevins; and a sister, Midge Vipperman.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Elizabeth "Libby" Blevins of the home; three daughters, Cynthia Helton, Lucy Blevins and Kathy Peterson, all of Thomasville, N.C.; four sons and daughter-in-law, James Dennis and Valerie Blevins of Edgewood, Md., William David Blevins, Joseph Dean Blevins and Malcolm Blevins Jr., all of Thomasville, N.C.; four stepchildren, Gary Anderson, Mike Anderson and Marlene Sult, all of Rural Retreat, and Candy Rose of Wytheville; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Bud Sullivan, Charlotte and Grover Combs, Susie and Dave Miller, all of Edgewood, Md., and Sadie King of Rural Retreat; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenny and Judy Blevins, Douglas and Dorothy Blevins, and Bill and Shirley Blevins, all of Edgewood, Md.; and 18 grandchildren.

Woodrow Wilson Hudson

Woodrow Wilson Hudson, 82, of West Ridge Road, Wytheville, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be Sunday, Aug. 9, at 3 p.m. in the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Eddie Noe Jr. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

He was retired from the Service Gas Co. and was the son of the late William Grover and Nannie Arnold Hudson.

He is survived by his wife, Atha Callahan Hudson; children, Larry and Patty Hudson, Jo-Ella and Lowell Burnett, and Myra and Jeff Baumgardner; a sister, Beulah H. Johnson; grandchildren, Paige Hudson, Carrie and Jason Edmonds, Blake Burnett, Jody Burnett, Emily Baumgardner and Megan Baumgardner; sisters-in-law, Martha Wilson, Net Hudson, Billie Umberger and Jane Walters; brother-in-law, Jack Eversole; and many special nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Building Fund.

James Allen Parks

James Allen Parks, 33, of Sugar Grove, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, in the University of Maryland Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Bobby Baker officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery.

He was the son of the late Luther Lewis and Polly Mae Blevins Parks.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie P. Parks of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Daniel James Parks and James Parks Jr.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Carl Wilson, and Patricia and Kenneth Neely, all of Sugar Grove; and a brother, Jess Parks of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Joyce Ann Aker

Joyce Ann Aker, 39, of Wytheville, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, at her residence.

Graveside service was held Tuesday, April 7, at 11 a.m. at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church cemetery with Pastor Joe Shumate officiating.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ollie Dwiggins Seagle Aker.

Survivors included two sons, Joshua Edward Aker and Daniel Lee Shefha, both of Holly Springs, N.C.; her father, George William Aker Sr. of Wytheville; three sisters, Donna Jean Pruitt of Marion, Connie Lee Aker of Leesport, Pa., and Dana Carol Aker of Wytheville; four brothers, William Jerry Aker of Rural Retreat, George William Aker Jr. of Wytheville, Timothy Wayne Aker of Grahams Forge, and Michael Shane Aker of Wytheville; and two grandchildren, Brittany Ann Aker and Cody Edward Aker.

Edward Lancing Bowles Sr.

Edward Lancing Bowles Sr., 80, of Route 1, Rocky Gap, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, in a Bluefield hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 6, at 1 p.m. at the Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield, W.Va., with the Rev. Danny Shortridge and the Rev. Paul Baker officiating. Entombment followed in Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery Mausoleum. The Sandy River District American Legion Post No. 175 and the Mercer County Veterans Council conducted military honors at the graveside.

Born Jan. 3, 1918, in Wytheville, he was a son of the late Charles Bowles and Ella Lefler Bowles. Prior to his retirement, he worked for Betsy Ross Bakery for 30 years as a facility technician. He was a member of Dry Fork Baptist Church in Rocky Gap and was a resident of Rocky Gap for 45 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Dorcas Burcham Bowles of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, E.L. "Buddy" Jr. and Sharon Bowles of Bluefield, W.Va., and Mickey and Delores Bowles of Bluefield; four daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Bill Hamby of Bluefield, W.Va., Bobbi Kay and Lloyd Dobbs of Virginia Beach, Gina and Les Holshouser of Hillsborough, N.C., and Dee Dee and Dave Miller of Efland, N.C.; two sisters, Stella Mae Umberger and Helen Smith, both of Wytheville; and 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield, W.Va., was in charge of the arrangements.

Sallie Kate Pannell Daugherty

Sallie Kate Pannell Daugherty, 89, of Wytheville, died Sunday, April 5, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 7, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Martin officiating. Interment followed in the Galilee Christian Church cemetery.

She was born in Wise County, the daughter of the late David Clyde and Mary Maglin Wilkes Kegley Pannell. She was a member of the Galilee Christian Church were she served as an assistant pianist and Sunday school teacher.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Daugherty; one infant son; and a daughter, Nannie Mae Daugherty.

Survivors include one daughter, Florence D. Safewright Mills of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Edward Clyde and Doris Daugherty of Wytheville; four grandchildren, Kay Dawn Daugherty of Lynchburg, Reta Safewright Buchanan of Wytheville, Shirley Safewright Poole of Woodlawn, and Gary Steven Safewright of Independence; three great-grandchildren, Terry Wayne Davis of Rural Retreat, Deborah Lynn Jorden of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Eric Steven Safewright of Independence; and two great-great-grandchildren, Steven Lane Brown and Dylan Speed Davis.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Galilee cemetery Fund.

Nora Gordon

Nora Gordon, 72, of Ft. Worth, Texas, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 7, at 11 a.m. at the Greenwood Chapel. Burial was held in Greenwood Memorial Park, Fort Worth, Texas.

She was born Feb. 2, 1926 in Vinton. She was a civil service purchaser. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary No. 8235 and attended Grace United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Walter Gordon of Fort Worth, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert "Bob" and Patricia Gordon of Fort Worth, Texas; a brother, Jim Johnson of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Frances Jabboer of Richmond; and two grandsons, James Gordon of Arlington, Texas, and John Gordon of Austin, Texas; and numerous other family members.

Greenwood Funeral Home in Fort Worth, Texas, was in charge of the arrangements.

William Robert Irvin

William Robert "Bill" Irvin, 76, of Wytheville, died Sunday, April 5, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 8, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Smith. Interment will be in the Mt. Ephraim United Church cemetery.

He was the son of the late Luther and Stella Mills Irvin. He was retired from General Motors and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth I. Wilkins of Wytheville, and JoElla I. Gray of Bristol; four grandchildren, Tiffany Grace Wilkins, John Erik Wilkins, Christopher Elliot Wilkins, and Suzette Gray; a great-granddaughter, Cortney Elizabeth Barnes; a great-grandson, Christian Elliott Wilkins; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
