Lawrence Straley Sult

Lawrence Straley Sult, 88, of Crockett, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 7, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Rance Edwards. Interment was in the Kings Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was retired from the American Screw Company and was a member of the Kings Grove United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hallie Miller Sult.

Survivors include one daughter, Verna S. Fisher of Rural Retreat; one son and daughter-in-law, Ellis F. and Elaine Sult of Bluefield, W.Va.; a sister, Mary Cornett of Rural Retreat; a half brother, James W. Hall; grandchildren and spouses, Dewey and Lucy Fisher, Joe and Melissa Sult, Denise and Mike Farmer, Jane and Mark Mustard, Joyce Lien, and Cathy and Keith Godwin; and seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Kings Grove cemetery Fund.

Lewis E. Umberger

Lewis E. Umberger, 83, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 7, at 11 a.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel M. Umberger of Wytheville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Brenda P. and Ron McCraken of Granite Falls, N.C., Donna V. and Michael L. Smith of Wytheville, and Eva M. Umberger of Middleburg, Fla.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Elwood "Woody" Umberger, and Edward "Eddie" and Kathy Umberger, all of Wytheville; three sisters, Ethel Terry, Ada Goodwin, and Jane Cox, all of Wytheville; one brother, Lawrence Umberger of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Donna G. Sardinas, Rebekah Pederson, and Zaneta B. McCraken; and one great-grandchild, Grant Sardinas.

Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Garnett Wayne Bise

Garnett Wayne Bise, 63, died Saturday, March 14, 1998, in Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at the Chilhowie Baptist Church with the Rev Chuck Herrell and the Rev. Fred Conley officiating. Burial followed in the Cleghorn Valley cemetery. Francis Marion VFW Post No. 4667 conducted graveside military honors.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Chilhowie Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Bise; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Buddy Wagoner of Marion; three sons and daughters-in-law, David Wayne Bise of Charlotte, N.C., Danny Glen and Christy Bise of Marion, and Timothy Paul and Clarissa Bise of Chilhowie; seven sisters, Margaret Lowder of Wytheville, Ora "Chunny" Ratliff and Peggy Johnson, both of Bristol, Tenn., Sandra Crewey and Geraldine Cale, both of Marion, Doris Allison of Portsmouth, and Donna Blevins of Atkins; one brother, Roscoe Bise of Marion; and one grandson, Joshua Wayne Wagoner.

Lillian Hilton Irvin

Lillian Hilton Irvin, 92, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 22, at 2 p.m. in the Mt. Ephraim United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Layell. Interment will be in the Mt. Ephraim Church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was the daughter of the late William R. and Frances Fisher Hilton. She was a member of Mt. Ephraim United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Trinkle Irvin.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Frances Sharpe of Wytheville, Betty and Bill Fowler of Wytheville, and Emma Sue and Charlie Gilbert of Bristol; one son and daughter-in-law, Verl and Evelyn Irvin of Wytheville; and 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Those who wish to do so may make memorial contributions to the charity of their choice.

Patsy Ann Spence Jordan

Patsy Ann Spence Jordan, 52, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, in the Edgemont Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the Lebanon Lutheran Church cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Cynthia Spence and Timothy Paul Rosenbaum, and Rebecca Carol Spence, all of Wytheville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Timothy Jordan, and Albert James and Sheila Dean Jordan, all of Wytheville; her mother, Ruby Spence of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and A.M. Owens of Bristol; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Billy Spence, Wayne and Ruth Spence, and David and Margie Hardin, all of Wytheville; and four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Nora Jane Thompson Kimberling

Nora Jane "Pinkie" Thompson Kimberling, 98, of Bland, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, in the Kegley Manor Nursing Home in Bastian.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 20, at 11 a.m. at the Bland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Frank Clifton and the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment followed in the Bland cemetery.

She was born in Bland County the daughter of the late John Edward and Rachel Pauley Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Kimberling; three sons and two grandsons.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and Raymond Barker of Marion, Jean and David Williams of Bland, and Edna and Clay Barker of Princeton, W.Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Patsy Kimberling of Roanoke; a brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Pauline Thompson of Tazewell; and 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 10, Bastian, VA 24314 or the Bland cemetery, c/o Jane Hall, Bland, VA 23415.

Frances Louise Rakes McPeak

Frances Louise Rakes McPeak, 92, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 21, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Isaac Reece officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery.

She was born in Floyd County, a daughter of the late Jack and Frances Louise Viars Rakes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy McPeak Sr.; and two sons, Robert H. "Bob" McPeak, and Clarence McPeak

Survivors include six sons, Roy McPeak Jr., Melvin McPeak, Udell McPeak, Dewey McPeak, Larry McPeak and Michael McPeak, all of Wytheville; two daughters, Delphia Bralley of Rural Hall, N.C., and Shirley Dunford of Wytheville; and 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Ben Hur Pickett Sr.

Ben Hur "Cotton" Pickett Sr., 75, of Max Meadows, died Monday, March 18, 1998, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 20, at 8:30 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Iva Lodge No. 173, I.O.O.F. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Taz Reid officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery with Grover King Post No. 1115, V.F.W. conducting graveside military rites.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Michael L. and Blanche Monahan Pickett. He was a member of Ivanhoe Iva Lodge No. 173, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Grover King Post, No. 1115, V.F.W. and the Fairview United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leona Sutphin Pickett; a son, Ben H. Pickett Jr.; a daughter, Rebecca Pickett; three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Jackson Pickett of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Priscilla Diane and Howard Fiala of Elk Ridge, Md., Sarah Jane and Norman "Poko" Goodson Jr. of Ivanhoe, Vicky and William Lucas of Hanover, Md., Pamela Pickett Ford of Columbia, Md., and Andrew Ford of Fredrick, Md.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Edmond Roger and Debra Pickett of Glen Burnie, Md., John T. Sr. and Nancy Pickett of Laurel, Md., Dwayne D. Pickett of Glen Burnie, Md., David O. Sr. and Donna Pickett of Austinville, Ellen "Sissy" Pickett and Carol Harding, both of Laurel, Md.; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Stephanie and Jeffrey Jonas of Route 3, Wytheville; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Doug and Nancy Smith of Max Meadows; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Geneva "Sis" Simmons of Laurel, Md., Juanita and Foster Lawson, and Maxine and Glenn Ingo, all of Ivanhoe; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph L. Pickett of Ivanhoe, E.R. "Pat" and Shirley Pickett of Fries, and William "Bill" Pickett of Ivanhoe; and 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Patricia Kroslack Roberts

Patricia "Patty" Kroslack Roberts, 43, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at Dilworth Church of God, Sumiton, Ala. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by a son, Shawn Michael Roberts; and her mother, Barbara Kroslack.

Survivors include her fiancé, Jerry L. Wittorp Sr. of Wytheville; a son, Christopher Roberts of Calumet City, Ill.; her father, Max Kroslack of Indiana; two brothers, Max Kroslack Jr. and Mark Kroslack, both of Florida; three sisters, Christina Thomson of Indiana, Kathy Popielewski of Illinois, and Karon Herman of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Bell Funeral Home in Sumiton, Ala., is in charge of the arrangements.

Carlos Kent Umberger

Carlos Kent Umberger, 90, of Pulaski, died Friday, March 20, 1998, at the Pulaski Health Center.

Funeral services will be Sunday, March 22, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis Martin and the Rev. Jim Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at the Lebanon Church cemetery in Wythe County.

He and Leta Umberger owned and operated the U and F Groceries for 14 years on Alum Spring Road, Pulaski. He was better known as "Paw Burger" as he farmed and plowed many neighbors' gardens. He was a member of Jordan's Chapel United Methodist Church and served as a trustee. He was also a sub-contractor for Silica Sand. He was well known in the Max Meadows and Wythe County area. He was born there Jan. 28, 1908. He was the son of the late Leffie Harlow and Minnie C. Umberger.

He is survived by his wife, Leta Cox Umberger; one brother, James Hall Umberger of Wytheville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Bill Friend of Pulaski, Cecile and Jimmy Umberger of Dublin, Katherine McDaniel of Pulaski, and Betty Archer of Roanoke; four grandsons, Billy Allen Friend and Carlos Friend, both of Pulaski, Gary Archer and Chris Saul, both of Roanoke; and two granddaughters, Rebecca Archer of Roanoke and Tamara Farmer of Lenoir, N.C.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski.

William Walter Snow

William Walter "Craig" Snow, 78, of Barren Springs, died Friday, March 20, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 22, at 2 p.m. at the Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Rupert Quesenberry and the Rev. Ronnie Stuart officiating. Interment will follow in the Snow Family cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Pulaski Post No. 1184 V.F.W.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Frost and Viola Clark Snow. He was a member of the Pulaski American Legion Post No. 0007, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Claudia Horton; and three brothers, Robert Johnny Snow, Glen Ray Snow, and Clifford Odell Snow. Survivors include one daughter, Becky Snow of Hillsville; a foster daughter, Jessica Crigger of Hillsville; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Mary Snow, Maudie Allen, and Faye and Sam Carpenter, all of Barren Springs; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Andy and Nancy Snow of Barren Springs, Floyd "Hoot" and Sue Snow of Patterson, and Janie Snow of Barren Springs; and several nieces, nephews, and many special friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Buel W. Akers

Buel W. "Banie" Akers, 92, of the Cripple Creek community, died Monday morning, Aug. 4, 1997, in a Radford hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m. at Rosenbaum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with interment in the church cemetery.

He was a lifelong member of the Rosenbaum Pentecostal Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Margie Akers.

Survivors include six daughters and four sons-in-law, Elizabeth Arnold, Mary Webb, Evelyn and Jake Sutphin, Stella and Dan Cox, Debbie and Darrell Arnold, Opal Faye and Ansil Park, all of Wytheville; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bill and Doris Akers, Randolph and Marie Akers and Harold Akers, all of Wytheville; 22 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
