Clifton Carroll Moore

Clifton Carroll "Kil" Moore, 80, of Austinville, died Friday, March 27, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 30, at 2 p.m. in the Bethany United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Donald White. Interment was in the church cemetery.

He was retired from the New Jersey Zinc Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the Ivanhoe Lodge No. 173 Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

He is survived by his wife, Lois K. Moore of Austinville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon K. and Ed Lilly, and Jo Carole and Bill Atkins, all of Wytheville; a special daughter, Terri; a sister, Essie Fritts of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Josephine H. Smith

Josephine H. Smith, 93, of Route 1, Rural Retreat, died Monday, March 30, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 1, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Interment will follow in the Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church in Nebo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Burlie W. Smith.

Survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Geneva and Ray Gentry of Hampton, and Betty Yates of Tazewell; five sons and daughters-in-law, Harry Lee and Patsy Smith of Ridgeway, William Smith, Burlie "June" and Lauretta Smith, all of Rural Retreat, Jack and Mary Smith of Eagle River, Alaska, and Jim and Mary Smith of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Flora Hancock of Marion; six grandchildren, Mike Smith, Cindy Buzitis, Tammy Hickel, Linda Akehurst, Terry Ponzillo, and Donna Wilber; eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; a special caregiver friend, Ernestine Sult of Rural Retreat; and several nieces and nephews.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services, Railroad Ave., Rural Retreat, VA 24368, or to the Zion United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, c/o James R. Hubble, 352 Hummingbird Lane, Ceres, VA 24318.

David Harold Blankenship Sr.

David Harold Blankenship Sr., 79, of Bland, died Sunday, March 15, 1998.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 19, at 11 a.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Dwayne Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Church cemetery, Bland.

He was born June 29, 1918, at Narrows, a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Virgie Mae Orey Blankenship.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Creasie Dalton Blankenship; a grandson, Emory C. Davis; a granddaughter, Thresa Davis; and a brother, Cecil Blankenship.

Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Cathern McGuire, Jane and Teddy Davis, Vinia and Willie Davis, Janet and Matt Clemons, all of Bland, and Von and Gus Shepherd of Christiansburg; three sons and daughters-in-law, David H. Blankenship Jr., Larry and Carol Blankenship, all of Bland, and Jerry and Reba Blankenship of Pearisburg; five sisters, Eva Bouldin of Dublin, Lee Dalton of Narrows, Fay Hull of Rocky Gap; Dorothy Agee and Magatha Blankenship, both of Bland; special friends, Libby Harless, Mary Chewning, and Ashley Drummond; and 28 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home.

Betty Mercedith Harden Clark

Betty Mercedith Harden Clark, 56, of Town of LaGrange, N.Y., formerly of Ceres, died Thursday, March 12, 1998, in Westchester County Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 17, at 2 p.m. at Red Oak Union Church in Ceres with the Rev. Bill Schoeneman officiating. Interment followed in the Red Oak cemetery.

She was a graduate of Berea College with a bachelor's degree in home economics, taught home and consumer economics at Loudoun Valley High School in Virginia from 1963 to 1967 and taught at Poughkeepsie High School from 1967 until her retirement in 1977. She was active in East Fishkill, LaGrange and Mid Hudson Soccer Leagues in New York.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gilbert R. Harden.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Clark of the home; one son, Carl A. Clark of Neupals, N.Y.; her mother, Irene Walters Harden of Ceres; two sisters, Linda Spears of Walkersville, Md., and Frances Umbarger of Ceres; two brothers, G.R. Harden of Ceres, and Glenn Harden of Austinville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Heart Association for aneurysm research.

Iris Andrews Collins

Iris Andrews Collins, 70, of Ivanhoe, died Monday, March 16, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. A.C. Ashford and the Rev. Earl Hanks officiating. Interment will follow in the Davis cemetery.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Andrews Collins.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Glen Sword of Houston, Texas, and Debbie Collins and Arthur Wayne Harless of Route 1, Max Meadows; a sister, Aileen Umberger of Wytheville; and two grandchildren, Tracy Collins and Priscilla Sword.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Bissell Hucks

Elizabeth "Betty" Bissell Hucks, 77, of Pawley's Island, S.C., died Saturday, March 14, 1998, in Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Georgetown, S.C. of leukemia.

A memorial service will be held in Bland at a later date.

She was born on March 24, 1920, a daughter of the late Henry G. Bissell and Ruth Robinson Bissell. She was retired from the Interior Department in Washington, D.C. and was the widow of Fredric Esmond Hucks. She was a member of the Bland Baptist Church in Bland.

She is survived by a son, Fredric E. Hucks Jr. of Pawley's Island, S.C.; four daughters, Diane Tibbs of Bland, Donna G. Markham of Sunnyvale, Calif., Denise E. Hucks of Falls Church, and Deborah L. Hardgrave of Stafford; and nine grandsons, one granddaughter, and three great-grandsons.

The family suggests memorials to be made to the Bland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 10, Bland, VA 24314.

Margaret McCormack Tice

Margaret McCormack Tice, 57, of Wytheville, died Saturday, March 14, 1998, in the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville.

A prayer service was held Tuesday, March 17, at 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 18, at 10 a.m. in the St. Mary's Catholic Church conducted Father J. Ven Ilano. Burial will be Friday, March 20, in Vicksburg, Miss.

She was born and raised in Vicksburg, Miss., and was a 1959 graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy, and Merry Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1965 in New Orleans, La.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. John J. Tice IV of Wytheville; a daughter and her fiancé, Renee Oubre and Richard Cawston of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Lynsey Oubre of Winter Park, Fla., and John and Katy Oubre of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Anne and Harlan Boyles of Jacksonville, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Jeremy, Courtney, Alexandria, and Austin.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations may be made to the Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands, P.O. Box 545, Wytheville, VA 24382, or to Habitat for Humanity of Wytheville, c/o St. Mary's Catholic Church, Wytheville.

Charles Burton Farris

Charles "Charlie" Burton Farris, 65, of Max Meadows, the Galena Community, died Friday, July 17, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 19, at 8 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service was held Monday, July 20, at 1 p.m. in the Sanders cemetery. Both were conducted by the Rev. Richard Lindamood.

He was the son of the late Charles W. and Josephine Viars Farris.

He was preceded in death by a son, Roger Dale Farris.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Rose Farris of Max Meadows; two daughters and son-in-law, Janet Farris of Rural Retreat, and Brenda and Sam Alley of Max Meadows; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Pansy Farris of Kernersville, N.C., and Clint and Myra Farris of Hillsville; a godchild, Michelle Viars Surratt of Max Meadows; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Beatrice Surratt of Austinville, Della and Bill Crockett of Kernersville, N.C., Dot and Roy Aker of Max Meadows, and Shirley and Trenton Mabe of Kernersville, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Bonnie Farris of Max Meadows; a special friend, Jack Rose of Max Meadows; three granddaughters, three grandsons, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Elma Kathryn Goins

Elma Kathryn Goins, 82, of Wytheville, died Monday, July 20, 1998, at the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

She was born Nov. 16, 1915, in Maybeury, W.Va., to Walter B. and Bessie Ethel Robbins Hale.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Ann Cresce.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth H. Goins of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis L. "Bub" and Brenda Goins of Tulsa, Okla., and Larry Burton and Linda Goins of Ashland, Ore.; one daughter, Jacklyn Elaine Hinds of Medford, Ore.; and seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence is in charge of the arrangements.

Trovia Dale Townley

Trovia Dale Townley, 60, of Bastian, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 22, at 11 a.m. at the Bastian Church of God with the Rev. William Hand officiating. Interment will follow in the Hoge's Chapel cemetery in Bland.

She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Mellicue and Merlyn Willard Townley and was a member of the Bastian Church of God.

She is survived by two sisters, Sharon Hall of Milpitas, Calif., and Rachel Butts of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and two brothers, Dexter Townley of Bastian, and M. Samuel Townley of Montrose, Colo.

Mary Noyes Tuttle

Mary Noyes Tuttle, 78, of Wytheville, died Monday, July 20, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 23, at 11 a.m. in the St. Paul United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Charles Burnett and the Rev. Bruce D. Tuttle. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Homer W. and Lucretia Smith Noyes, and was a retired secretary at the Wytheville Community College, an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, a guardian of Jobs Daughters in Wytheville and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II where she served in the WAVES in Washington, D.C.

She is survived by her husband, James Grant Tuttle of Wytheville; a daughter and fiancé, Roberta T. Matherne and Paul Fulenwider of Williamsburg; a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Bruce D. and Rebecca Tuttle of Richmond; a brother, Robert L. Noyes of Cleveland, Ohio; a granddaughter, Jennifer K. Tuttle of Virginia Beach; and a grandson, C. Seth Tuttle of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 22, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund, The American Alzheimer's Association, or the American Diabetes Association.

Ollie Golden Widener Buck

Ollie Golden Widener Buck, 80, of Rural Retreat, the Groseclose community, died Saturday, March 21, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 23, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Bunting and the Rev. Ron Whitener officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Groseclose.

She attended the Groseclose First Church of God.

She is survived by her husband, Fred Vance Buck of the home; one daughter, Evelyn C. Buck of Groseclose; six sons and daughters-in-law, Charles F. and Donna Buck, Eugene H. and Gale Buck, Jerry L. and Terry Buck, Larry W. Buck, all of Groseclose, Franklin D. and Peggy Buck of Rural Retreat, and Randall G. Buck of Wilmington, N.C.; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Alberta Widener of Seven Mile Ford; and four brothers, Charles Widener, Buford Widener, both of Seven Mile Ford, Gordon Widener, and Herman Widener, both of Marion.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services.
