Walter Lawrence Cline

Walter Lawrence Cline, 69, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Holly Phillips officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

He and his sons own and operate Cline's Body Shop. He was a member of the Petunia Christian Church. He served in the U.S. Army and Reserves and was a member of the Rural Retreat American Legion Post No. 229.

He was preceded in death by his father, Garland Alexander Cline; and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Marsh Cline of Wytheville; two sons, Walter Douglas "Doug" Cline, and Lawrence Edward "Eddie" Cline, both of Wytheville; his mother, Nealy Jane Martin Cline of Wytheville; four sisters, Virginia Sutphin of Wytheville, Helen Tickle of Max Meadows, Libby Caudle of Wytheville, and Ethel Willard of Darlington, S.C.; five brothers, Richard H. Cline and Randy Cline, both of Rural Retreat, Kenley Cline of Crockett, Bill Cline of Dublin, and Martin Cline of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Diabetes Association, 404 8th Street N.E., Charlottesville, VA 22901, or the American Heart Association, Attn.: Imogene Orfield, Treasurer, P.O. Box 297, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Harold Joseph Simmerman

Harold Joseph Simmerman, 59, of Route 3, Pulaski (Case Knife Road), died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dale Akers and the Rev. Mabel Caudill officiating. Interment followed in Peak Creek Mission of Prayer Church cemetery, Pulaski.

Born October 6, 1938, in Wytheville, he was the son of the late Louis Glen and Alma Louise Flemmings Simmerman.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Vada Hottinger.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Venetia Eads Simmerman; three daughters and sons-in-law, Angie Simmerman and Tim Rorrer of Pulaski, Twyla and Kevin Riffe of Pulaski, and Amanda Simmerman of the home; four grandchildren, Kevin Simmerman, Josey Riffe, Zachery Riffe, and Katie Rorrer; and one sister, Jean Allen Whalen of Speedwell.

Bower Funeral Chapel in Pulaski was in charge of the arrangements.

Zachary Clive Stephens

Zachary Clive Stephens, 47, of Hillsville, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, in the Twin County Hospital in Galax.

A graveside service and interment will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Black cemetery with Elder Joseph McGrady officiating.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Rogers Stephens.

Survivors include his mother, Rosa Burnett Felts of Hillsville; a sister, Rosemary Caves of Dublin; two brothers, Joel Merle Stephens of Max Meadows, and Jan Marlon Stephens of Hillsville; a niece, Ashley Rose Caves; two nephews, Jody Stephens and Joshua Stephens; special friends, Gayle and Cameron Beck of Hillsville; and a special aunt, Clara Ruth Stephens.

Gladys S. McAllister

Gladys Mae Sprouse McAllister, 82, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Jack Martin and the Rev. Holly Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Harry Hamilton and Naomi Eversole Sprouse. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Women's Christian Fellowship, and was a floral designer.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Kirby and Elsie Tucker; and a brother, James Sprouse.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Ford McAllister of the home; five daughters and two sons-in-law, Sue Anne and Bill Cregger of Springfield, Linda Sharon McAllister of Christiansburg, Gayle and Sam Dix of Gloucester Point, Carole Walters and Vickie Coble, both of Wytheville; three sons, Donald F. McAllister and Glenn Tracy McAllister, both of Rural Retreat, and Gary Dean McAllister of Wytheville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Judge and Kathleen Sprouse and Bernard and Frances Sprouse, all of Roanoke; and 17 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Barnett Funeral Home or any time at the residence.

Sidney C. Stroupe

Sidney Crockett Stroupe, 85, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Collins and the Rev. Don Tate officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosenbaum Chapel cemetery.

He was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Sherman and Iva Stroupe.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Marie Stroupe of the home; seven daughters and sons-in-law, Cathleen and John Arnold, Minnie and LeeRoy Dunford, Nancy Jeraldine Osborne, Loretta and Albert Dunford, Rosetta Gaye Stroupe, Brenda and Curtis Arnold and Leonia and Clifton Dean, all of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Sidney H. and Bobby Stroupe of Wytheville; two sisters, Glady Mabe of Marion and Bertha Harrell of Ararat; two brothers, Henry Carter Stroupe of Wytheville and Sanders Randolph Stroupe of Galax; 23 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Howard Thompson Jr.

Howard "Tomcat" Thompson Jr., 51, of Route 1, Max Meadows, the Piney community, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998 from injuries of a work accident.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Stuart officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose Monahan.

Survivors include his wife, Winifred Thompson of the home; one daughter, Donna Chapel of Danville; one stepdaughter, Debra Chaffins of Roderfield, W.Va.; two stepsons, Donald J. Collins of Coalwood, W.Va. and Leonard Collins of Wytheville; a sister, Linda Martin of Hillsville; a brother, William Beverly of Baltimore, Md.; uncles and aunts, Joe and Judy Monahan, Jack and Elizabeth Monahan and Glen and Joyce Lacy, all of Speedwell, Tom and Betty Monahan of Clintwood and Frances Hardy of Mt. Airy, N.C.; three grandsons, four stepgrandsons and several nieces and nephews.

Fred Brown Vaught

Fred Brown Vaught, 93, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, in the Francis Marion Manor.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Retreat with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late George and Mazie Horne Vaught. He was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Willis Vaught, Walker Vaught and Lee Vaught; and one sister, Marietta Keesling.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Emma Bowers Vaught; two sisters-in-law, Canna Litz of Rural Retreat and Thelma Ratcliffe of New Market; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family suggests those who prefer may make memorials to the charity of their choice.

Charles M. Wolford Sr.

Charles McKnight Wolford Sr., 64, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Barry Losey and the Rev. Jimmy McComas officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Joseph Edgar and Mae McKnight Wolford. He was an employee of Acrylife Inc. and served in the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by a son, Charles McKnight Wolford Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean Longanacre Wolford of Wytheville; two sons, Gregory Wolford and Brian Wolford, both of Wytheville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Buddy Stowers of Wytheville, and Betty and Art Peekel of Moneta; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 389, Wytheville, VA 24382.

John Massey Allison Jr.

John Massey Allison Jr., 69, of Hillsville, formerly of Wythe County, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 1996, in the Southwestern Virginia Training Center.

Graveside services and interment were held Monday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Davis cemetery with the Rev. Earl Hanks officiating.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Massey Allison Sr.

Survivors include his mother, Beatrice Dickens Allison; five sisters, Velma Frederick, Lucille Grubb, Donna Young, all of Wytheville, Lois Sayers of Galax, and Mary Margaret Allison of Lynchburg; two brothers, Dennis Allison of Ivanhoe, and Freddie Allison of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Sara Diann Davis Eversole

Sara Diann Davis Eversole, 43, of Austinville died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Hal Lewis and the Rev. Gary Cope. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Doris G. Eversole Jr. of Austinville; a sister, Wanda Jean Davis of Max Meadows; a brother-in-law-to-be, David W. Blair of Max Meadows; her parents, Carl and Lillian Davis of Austinville; and several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Clinton Jefferson Gravley Jr.

Clinton Jefferson "C.J." Gravley Jr., 43, of Max Meadows died Sunday, Oct. 13, 1996, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Curtis Stoots and Robbie Gravley officiating. Interment will follow in the Sanders cemetery.

He was an employee of the Stockner Excavating Co.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clinton Jefferson Gravley Sr.

Survivors include his mother, Vivian Crigger Gravley of Max Meadows; four sisters, Betty Crowder of Pulaski, Ruby Mooney of Max Meadows, Melissa Poole, and Helen Smith, both of Christiansburg; a girl friend, Brenda Sutphin of Barren Springs; three special friends, Miranda Sutphin, and Missy and Kim Bain; and nine nieces and nephews.

Robert James Hays Jr.

Robert James Hays Jr., 73, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 1996.

Graveside services and interment were held Monday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Hays Family cemetery in Chatham Hill with the Rev. Bryant Moxley officiating.

He was a lifelong resident of Smyth and Bland Counties. He was a retired farmer, carpenter, and flea marketeer.

He is survived by his wife, Julia W. Hays of the home; five children, Alisha Walker of Marion, Robert Hays III of Hillsville, Tommye Jo Hays of Marion, Virginia Atkins of Rich Valley, and Ann Hays, MD of Nebo; three step-children, Geneva Briggs, Ph.D. of Richmond, Dale Clark of Wytheville, and Tommy Clark of Bland; one sister, Mary Ann Buchanan of Chatham Hill; two brothers, Calvin Hays and Fox Hays, both of Chatham Hill; and three grandchildren, Beth Atkins, Shannon and Laurence Mann.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to any organization for mentally challenged children.
