Spencer L. Garland

Spencer L. "Shorty" Garland, 62, of Route 1, Max Meadows, the Walton Furnace Community, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m. at the Fort Chiswell Church of Christ with Glann Lee officiating. Interment will follow in the Humphrey Family cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was born in Washington County, a son of the late Argle and Mary Ellen Jordan Garland. He was a member of the Fort Chiswell Church of Christ and a U.S. Marine Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a retired mechanic for Goforth Tractor and Equipment Co.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Humphrey Garland of the home; a son, Steven L. Garland of Route 1, Max Meadows; three sisters, Glenna McFarland of Rural Retreat, Beckie Friend of Max Meadows, and Gail Tate of Wytheville; two brothers, Joe Garland of Hillsville, and Mason Garland of Wytheville; stepmother, Virginia Garland of Wytheville; sister-in-law, Julia Akers of Max Meadows; brother-in-law, James Humphrey of Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be appreciated, however, the family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to Community Hospice of America, P.O. Box 381, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Ralph Elmo Holston Sr.

Ralph Elmo Holston Sr., 71, of Max Meadows, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, in the Roanoke Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 8, at 1:30 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Rick Lindamood officiating. Interment will follow in the East End cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Peyton Marion Holston and Rose Ethel Thacker Holston. He was retired from Burlington Industries with more than 30 years' service. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He also served in the First Calvary Division Troop E. Eight Calvary Regiment.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Sanders M. Holston.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Terry Quesenberry of Kingsport, Tenn.; a son, Ralph E. Holston Jr. of Clemmons, N.C.; two grandsons, Mackenzie Quesenberry and Taylor Quesenberry; and three brothers, Walter Holston of Danville, Robert C. Holston of Max Meadows, and Carl Lee Holston of Towson, Md.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Bobby Dean Parks

Bobby Dean Parks, 51, of Rural Retreat, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Clyde King Sr. and the Rev. David Roush officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and an employee of AMSCO Products in Wytheville.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie McFarland Parks of the home; one daughter, Mary Parks of the home; one son, Danny Parks of the home; and three brothers, Ray Vernon Parks, Kenneth Eugene Parks and Ansil Perry Parks, all of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Feb. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Kathleen Bralley Swecker

Kathleen Bralley Swecker, 87, of Pulaski, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. from the Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Darlene Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in the East End cemetery, Wytheville.

She was born July 15, 1910, in Wythe County and was a daughter of the late Andrew J. Bralley and Rosa Lee McRoberts Bralley. She was a member of the Thornspring United Methodist Church, Pulaski, and she was a retired nurse and cosmetologist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward LaFayette Swecker; four brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and John Smith of Virginia Beach, Jane S. Salas of El Paso, Texas, and Susan and Wayne Cox of Max Meadows; seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Feb. 8, from 1 p.m. until service time at Stevens Funeral Home.

Sadie Arvella Shanholtzer Brown

Sadie Arvella Shanholtzer Brown, 79, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, in the Kegley Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m., at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Robert Johnson and the Rev. Holly Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery in Roanoke.

She was born in Hampshire County, W.Va., a daughter of the late John C. and Rosa May Shanholtz. She attended Petunia Christian Church, Disciples of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Carroll Brown.

Survivors include three sisters, Velma Peters of Kirby, W.Va., Viola Jones of Romney, W.Va., and Nadine Hudson of Middleport, Ohio; special friends, Peggy and Troy Henley of Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggest that those who prefer may make memorials to the charity of your choice.

Charles Greever Chandler Jr.

Charles Greever Chandler Jr., 59, of Bland, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Kitts officiating. Interment will follow in the Grandview cemetery, Bluefield.

He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Greever Chandler.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Ann Chandler of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Laura Denise Chandler, and Karen Lynn and Alvin Hodges, all of Roanoke; two sons and daughter-in-law, Steven Dale Chandler of Roanoke, and Charles Greever III and Susie Chandler of Bland; one stepdaughter, Bobbi Faith Hobbs; his mother, Ruby Opal Chandler of Bland; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty Jean and Jimmy Lewis Hylton of Bland; and two step-grandchildren of Roanoke.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home in Bland.

Robert Gannaway Hilton

Robert Gannaway "R.G." Hilton, 66, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with Pastor Martti Saarinan officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Lewis B. and Mattie Riggle Hilton. He was a retired U.S. Veteran Administration employee of the U.S. government and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of the V.F.W.

He is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Venitta and Lewis Barrett of Woodbridge, and Loretta Hilton of Staunton; a grandson and spouse, Christopher and Angela Barrett of Woodbridge; a granddaughter, Allison Barrett of Woodbridge; two great-grandchildren, Chelsea Barrett and Nicole Barrett; two sisters, Cecil Marguerite Brunner, and Louise H. Frye, both of Wytheville; two special friends, Barbara Marsh, and Garland W. Hagee, both of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

May Brewer Pearman

May Brewer Pearman, 81, of Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

She was a lifelong resident of Bristol, Tenn., and the widow of Harold D. Pearman. She was an active member of Virginia Avenue United Methodist Women and United Sunday school class. She was a former employee of Parks-Belk.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William (Pam) Darnall of Northbrook, Ill.; two grandsons, Will Darnall of Tampa, Fla. and Jason Darnall of Elgin, Ill.; one great-grandson; and one niece.

Oakley-Cook Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Madaline Stringer Potts

Madaline Stringer Potts, 80, of Route 1, Dublin, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, in the Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Susan Cyre and the Rev. Dr. Thomas Sproule officiating. Interment will follow in the Troutdale cemetery.

She was born in North Carolina, a daughter of the late Charles and Callie Williams Stringer. She was a member of the Dublin Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the choir.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Potts; and two sons, Robert Dyer Potts, and Ronald C. Potts.

Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas M. and Joyce Potts of Roanoke, and Gary C. Potts of Dublin; two daughters and son-in-law, Jerry C. Potts of Waynesboro, and Darlene and Jack Eaves of Kingsport, Tenn.; a sister, Kata Hartman of Eustis, Fla.; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

James Earnest Spangler

James Earnest Spangler, 51. of Bland, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Tommy Ramsey officiating. Burial was in the Mountain Field cemetery in Bland.

He was born Dec. 13, 1946, at Hollybrook, a son of the late Earnest Lee and Stella Kathleen Falls Spangler. He was employed by Norfolk-Southern Railway.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Hager Spangler of Bland; one brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Thelma Spangler of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Birdie French Underwood

Birdie French Underwood, 88, of Route 2, Bland, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, in Kegley Manor Nursing Home, Bastian.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Arnold Clark and Rev. Tommy Ramsey officiating. Burial was in the French cemetery in Bland.

She was born Aug. 4, 1909, in Kegley, W.Va., a daughter of the late George and Mollie Reed Saunders.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Mitchell French, and Eddie Underwood; and a daughter, Betty Patton.

Survivors include three sons, Hubert M. French, Wallace Gene French, and John H. French, all of Bland; three daughters, Thelma Jane Sutphin of Sterling, Edna Conley, and Shirley Conley, both of Bland; one sister, Dane Wade of Princeton, W.Va.; one half-sister, Beulah Raines of Peterstown, W.Va.; and 29 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Lillian Shrader Burton

Lillian Shrader Burton, 82, of Route 2, Bland, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with the Rev. Dave Wall officiating. Burial will follow in the Shrader cemetery in Bland County.

She was born in Bland County on March 19, 1915, and was a daughter of the late Pyott Frazier and Mary Susan Crabtree Shrader. She was a member of the Round Bottom United Methodist Church on Wolf Creek in Bland County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Payton Mathas Burton.

Survivors include a brother, Watha Shrader of Narrows; three sisters, Linzie Cochrane and Eunice Childress, both of Bastian, and Blanche Walker of Bland; and a special nephew, Jim Shrader of Bluefield, W.Va.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Round Bottom United Methodist Church, Route 2, Narrows, VA 24124.
