Jimmy Lee Gilmore

Jimmy Lee Gilmore, 26, of Christiansburg, died Monday, May 17, 1999, as the result of a swimming accident in the New River.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 20, at 11 a.m. in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Home D. Sawyer officiating. Entombment followed in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

He is survived by one daughter, Jayme Leigh Gilmore of Christiansburg; his father and stepmother, Bobby Lee and Yvonne Denise Gilmore of Christiansburg; his mother and stepfather, Patricia Ann and Daniel M. Reynolds of Max Meadows; two brothers, Shawn Thomas Gilmore of Christiansburg, and David Roy Light Jr. of Fort Chiswell; his grandparents, the Rev. James T. and Mildred Mills of Pulaski; special nieces and nephews, Hannah Light of Fort Chiswell, Katelyne Gilmore of Christiansburg, Ashlee Nichole Light and David Roy Light III, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; two stepsisters, Sharon Phillips of Dugspur and Sandra Bowles of California; and many special friends.

Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Inc. in Christiansburg was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Hancock Harman

Ruby Hancock Harman, 80, of Bastian, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 22, at 1 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Robert Thornton and the Rev. Lee McIntosh officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosehill cemetery in Bastian.

She was born in Little Creek, a daughter of the late Jesse Eugene and Lula Mae Harman Hancock and was a member of the Bastian Union Church. She was retired from Tultex in Bastian.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Woodrow Harman; a son, Charles Woodrow Harman Jr.; a grandson, Charles Wesley Robertson; and several sisters and brothers.

Survivors include seven daughters and sons-in-law, Freda and Jack Robey of Culpeper, Ferne and Leonard Hooper of Bastian, Joyce and Tommy King of Bland, Marcia and Roland DeHart of Boones Mill, Janet and Larry Cullop of Ceres, Donna and Thomas Shewey of Bland, and Susie and Richard Kidd of Bastian; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Linda Harman, and Jerry and Debby Harman, all of Bastian; two sisters, Kate Akers, and Shirley Gravely, both of Wytheville; a brother, James Hancock of Portland, Ore.; and 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Newberry Funeral Home in Bland is in charge of the arrangements.

Kenneth L. Manuel

Kenneth L. Manuel, 62, of Speedwell, died Wednesday, May, 19, 1999, in a Roanoke hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 23, at 2 p.m. at the Speedwell United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was a prominent contractor in Wythe County for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Annie Quesenberry Manuel; two brothers, James S. Manuel and David Manuel; and one sister, Agnes M. Jones.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta Edmonds Manuel of Speedwell; three daughters and a son-in-law, Jeannette and Stephen Jones of Speedwell, Pat Pickle of Rural Retreat, and Debbie Manuel of Speedwell; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Susie Manuel of Rural Retreat, and Dennis Manuel and Sabrina Roark of Wytheville; two sisters, Peggy Collins and Merkie Harmon, both of Max Meadows; two brothers, Carl Manuel of Salem, and Paul Manuel of Pulaski; seven grandchildren, Chrissy Jones, Misty Manuel, Brad Manuel, Kenny Manuel, Justin Manuel, John Manuel, and Samantha Pickle; a special friend, Michael Melton; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the Speedwell United Methodist Church.

Billy Ralph Shewey

Billy Ralph Shewey, 70, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 22, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Will Shewey and Hospice chaplain Marilyn Saarinen officiating. Interment will follow in the Marvin United Methodist Church cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted.

He was born Sept. 3, 1928, in Ashland, W.Va., to the late James P. and Louella Perkey Shewey. He was an U.S. Army veteran serving in Europe during World War II.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis G. Shewey; a sister, Vivian; and a brother, Vernon.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Shirley S. and Raymond Ratcliffe; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Shewey; two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to Hospice of Southwest Virginia.

Nellia Augusta Storms

Nellia Augusta Storms, 93, of Chestertown, Md., died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at the home of her daughter.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 22, at noon in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Seaford, Del.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., on April 29, 1906, a daughter of the late John V. and Sally Patterson Davis Williams. She was raised in Wytheville. She later moved to Chester, Pa., and in 1936 married Russell Storms and together they lived in Chester, Pa., where she was a homemaker. In 1972, when Mr. Storms passed away she moved to Chestertown, Md., to live with her daughter.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Robert Sutton of Chestertown, Md.; a sister, Louise Callahan of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Robert Sutton, Jennifer Wilson, Michelle Sutton, and Jonathan Sutton; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon Wilson and Valerie Wilson.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Chestertown Dialysis Center, 100 Brown Street, Chestertown, MD 21620.

Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown, Md., is in charge of the arrangements.

Audrey Parks Thompson

Audrey Parks Thompson, 64, of Max Meadows, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Rick Lindamood and Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Kingsport, Tenn., a daughter of the late Robert H. Sr. and Agnes Virginia Armbrister Parks and was a member of the Max Meadows United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Gray Thompson; and a sister, Nola Jean Parks.

Survivors include her husband, Warren R. Thompson of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and David Corvin of Route 4, Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Lloyd "Spider" and Rhonda Thompson of Harmony, N.C., and John and Lisa Thompson of Max Meadows; five grandchildren, David Corvin Jr., Daniel Corvin, Deidre Corvin, Deanna Corvin, and Jared Thompson; a sister, Linda Parks of Roanoke; two brothers, Joe Parks of Salem, and Robert H. "Bobby" Parks Jr. of Ceres; and special aunts and an uncle, Evelyn Moore, Mallie Baker, and Edwin Armbrister.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Lead Mines Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 502, Austinville, VA 24312.

James Everett Warden

James Everett Warden, 53, of Max Meadows, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 22, at 2 p.m. at the Max Meadows Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Albert Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Jones cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was a member of the Max Meadows Church of God of Prophecy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lonnie James Warden.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Gravely Warden of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Jamie and Larry Armbrister of Route 3, Max Meadows, and Ashley Warden of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Cheryl Warden of Route 3, Max Meadows; two granddaughters, Brittney Armbrister and Laken Armbrister; his mother, Ollie Coffey Warden of Route 3, Max Meadows; three sisters, Sandra Dean, Judy Eads and Linda Sue Hughes, all of Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Martin Luther Arnold

The Rev. Martin Luther Arnold, 90, of Loganville, Ga., died Saturday, May 15, 1999, in the Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, Ga.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at the Crossroads Community Church in Lawrenceville, Ga., with the Rev. Kevin Myers, the Rev. Jim Wiggins and Tom Arnold officiating. Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 20, at 1 p.m. at the West End cemetery in Wytheville.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Andrew Jackson and Katherine Felts Arnold. He served as a minister for 62 years.

He is survived by his wife, Daisy Watkins Lord Arnold of Loganville, Ga.; his children, Eloise Arnold Pruitt of Anderson, S.C., Thomas Jackson Arnold of Athens, Ga., Marilyn Lord Schneiter of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Susan Lord Bridges of Danville, Ga.; his grandchildren, Saundra Arnold Smith and Bruce Arnold, both of Athens, Ga., Kenneth Gilliard of Los Angeles, Calif., Keith Gilliard and Cathy Elrod, both of Anderson, S.C., Heidi Schneiter Pender and Hans Schneiter, both of Newberg, Ore., Brittany Schneiter and Tessa Schneiter, both of Haden Lake, Idaho, Matt Bridges of Danville, Ga., and Kristen Bridges of Danville, S.C.; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville or at the resident of his nephew, Marvin Arnold, at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Crossroads Community Church.

Douglas L. Johnson

Douglas L. "Doug" Johnson, 76, of Crockett, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 19, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery. The American Legion Post #9 will conduct graveside military rites.

He was retired from the Brunswick Corp. and was a veteran of World War II.

He is survived by one son, Gary Johnson of Rural Retreat; one sister, Betty Shepherd of Tazewell; and two grandchildren, Gary Mychel Johnson and Dougie Johnson, both of Crockett.

Joseph Crockett Shaffer Jr.

Joseph Crockett Shaffer Jr., 88, of Anderson, S.C., died Friday, May 14, 1999, at his home.

A memorial service was held Monday, May 17, at 4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Anderson with Dr. B.E. Pettit officiating.

Born April 26, 1911, in Wytheville, he was a son of the late Joseph Crockett Shaffer, a Virginia congressman, and Ada Ann Honaker Shaffer. A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Anderson, S.C., he was a Life Elder of the Presbyterian Church. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Emory & Henry College. He was awarded his law degree from the College of William and Mary. He practiced law in Wytheville, Bluefield, and in Princeton, W.Va., before retiring to Anderson, S.C. in 1987. He was past director and life director of One Valley Bank in Princeton, W.Va. He was active in the Republican Party and was a member of the Masonic Order, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a former member of the Kiwanis and Rotary clubs.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rebecca Beery Shaffer of the home; three daughters, Rebecca Peters of Port Charlotte, Fla., Ann Bagwell of Richmond, and Libby Winkler of Anderson, S.C.; two brothers, Dr. John Scott Shaffer of Abingdon and Edwin G. Shaffer of Wytheville; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Stamper of Roanoke and Edwina Charles of Liberty, N.C.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Anderson, 302 W. Whitner Street, Anderson, SC 29624; or to the S.C. Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Suite 105, Columbia, SC 29204.

Samuel Paul Bernard Sr.

Samuel Paul Bernard Sr., 84, of Bland, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 14, at 1 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Steve Dawson officiating. Burial was in Mechanicsburg cemetery, Mechanicsburg.

He was born May 3, 1915, at Mechanicsburg, the son of the late John Samuel and Eula Lee Gordon Bernard. He was in the general store business for 43 years, a charter member of the Mechanicsburg Ruritan Club and a member of the Crandon Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Walters Bernard; and two sisters, Ruth Atwell and Lois Stockner.

Survivors include one daughter and a son-in-law, Judith and Michael Dean of Dublin; one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel P. Jr. and Jeanette Bernard of Bland; one sister, Louise B. Bird of Bland; two grandchildren, David Harden of Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, and Deanna Harden of Radford; and two great-grandchildren, Brandi and Tori.

A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate was in charge of the arrangements.

Delsie Edna Vipperman Shelor

Delsie Edna Vipperman Shelor, 87, of Pulaski, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 14, at 2 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Howlett and the Rev. Kenneth Fogus officiating. Burial followed in the Liberty Hill cemetery, Carroll County.

She was born Sept. 20, 1911, in Carroll County and was a daughter of the late William E. and Minda Vipperman Vipperman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi Shelor; a daughter, Kathleen S. Cochran; a grandson, William Robin Cochran; and a great-great-grandson, Ethan Levi Cochran.

Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Vernon L. Shelor of Pulaski, and Eugene "Dobie" and Mary Shelor of Draper; a sister, Dora V. Shelor of Pulaski; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Stevens Funeral Home Inc. in Pulaski was in charge of the arrangements.
