Chalis Mae Scott, 1, of Rural Retreat, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 20, at 1 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat with the Rev. Rance Edwards and the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her parents, Jerry D. and Cyrilla Lindamood Scott of Rural Retreat; maternal grandmother, Evelyn K. Lindamood of Rural Retreat; paternal grandmother, Madge G. Scott of Max Meadows; paternal grandfather and his wife, Emery L. and Joann Scott of Bland; paternal great-grandfather and wife, Lonnie L. and Cathleen Martin of Tazewell; five aunts, Mona Littreal of Beckley, W.Va., Faith Chumbley of Draper, Katrina Fielder of Rural Retreat, Debbie Hall of Manassas, and Teresa Cranford of Atlanta, Ga.; three uncles, Gordon "Rocky" Lindamood of Rural Retreat, R.C. Scott and Lee Scott, both of Wytheville; godparents, John and Zona Jones of Max Meadows, and Jimmy and Pat Huddle of Rural Retreat; and several cousins.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Johns Hopkins Ketogenic Diet, c/o Johns Hopkins Hospital for Pediatrics, Baltimore, Md.

J.C. Callahan

J.C. "Jake" Callahan, 74, of Wytheville, died Thursday, April 15, 1999, in the Edgemont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church with Dr. Fred Austin and the Rev. Tommy Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

He was the son of the late Fielden and Mattie Cassell Callahan. He was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Aeroquip and farming. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, the Wytheville Masonic Lodge #82 A.F. & A.M. and the Wytheville Lodge #87 IOOF Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was an avid baseball fan of George Wythe High School and the New York Yankees.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Halsey Callahan of Wytheville; one daughter, Mattie C. Ward of Pearisburg; one son, the Rev. Jeffery C. "Jeff" Callahan of Chilhowie; one sister and brother-in-law, Birtie C. and Bob Fisher of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Justin E. Ward and Carson D. Ward, both of Pearisburg, and Stacia F. Callahan of Max Meadows; two sisters-in-law, Ruth P. Callahan and Louise Callahan, both of Wytheville; one brother-in-law, James C. Earhart of Vinton; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Grubb Funeral Home.

Those who wish may make memorials to Fairview United Methodist Church.

Lavonne D. Felts

Lavonne D. Felts, 67, Midlothian, died Monday, April 12, 1999.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 15, at 1 p.m. in Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home in Midlothian. Entombment was held Friday, April 16, at 1 p.m. at West End cemetery Mausoleum in Wytheville.

She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Felts; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kim and Vickie Felts of Midlothian, and Mike and Sherri Felts of Greenville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Patrick Felts, Ryan Felts, Andrew Felts, all of Midlothian, Kristen Felts and Meredith Felts, both of Greenville, N.C.; her mother, Pauline Adams of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Gene and Bonnie Davis of Midlothian, and John F. Davis of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Woody Funeral Home in Midlothian is in charge of the arrangements.

Fannie Leona Alley Hudson

Fannie Leona Alley Hudson, 85, of Austinville, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, in the Edgemont Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 17, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Gary Cope and the Rev. Joseph Harrison officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Carroll County, a daughter of the late Thomas Emmett and Rausa Porter Alley and was a member of the Austinville Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. "Buster" Hudson; two brothers, Garland Alley and Ivan "Bud" Alley; and a sister, Inez Dunford.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jewell and Melvin Davis of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandsons, Larry Davis and Russell Davis; a sister, Geneva Goodman Poston of Wytheville; a brother, Frank W. Alley of Austinville; a special sister-in-law, Maude Johnson of Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Lead Mines Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 502, Austinville, VA 24312 or the Austinville Pentecostal Holiness Church Fund.

Gracie Ellen Akers

Gracie Ellen Akers, 73, of Rural Retreat, died Friday, April 9, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A graveside service was held Monday, April 12, at 2 p.m. at the Ray's cemetery in Pulaski, with the Rev. J.P. Hale officiating.

She was born in Pulaski County, a daughter of the late George Washington and Sally Newton Lane. She was the widow of James Eldridge Akers Sr.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and Tommy Jones of Rural Retreat; three sons and daughter-in-law, James and Joan Akers, Ronnie Akers, all of Rural Retreat, and John Lane of Roanoke; one sister, Mert Repass of Snowville; one brother, Jessie Lane of Eagle Rock; 19 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Ralph Eugene Asbury

Ralph Eugene Asbury, 82, of Asbury Center at Birdmont Retirement Center in Wytheville, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Sunday, April 11, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 14, at 11 a.m. at the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Countiss and the Rev. James L. Cochran officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was born in Tazewell County, a son of the late James L. and Carrie McGuire Asbury. He was a graduate of Bluefield Business College, Class of 1935, a retired controller with Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, a member of the Rural Retreat Lions Club, and a former member of the Marion Rotary Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Looney Asbury.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Robert DeBord of Rural Retreat; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Dannita Asbury of Bloomington, Ill., and Alan and Karen Asbury of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Doris Brown of Flint, Mich., and Shirley Cochran of Port Charlotte, Fla.; three brothers, James P. Asbury of Coeburn, Charles Asbury of Clio, Mich., and Cecil Asbury of Salem; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Lions Club or to the St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Denford W. Cornett

Denford W. Cornett, 63, of Rockledge, Fla., died Thursday, April 8, 1999, in the Wuesthoff Memorial Hospital in Rockledge, Fla.

No funeral services were held.

He was born June 19, 1935 in Rural Retreat. He moved to Rockledge, Fla., in 1977 from Abingdon. He had worked five years as a truck driver for Spectrum Transportation. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Cornett of Rockledge, Fla.; four daughters, Patty Kolling of Rockledge, Fla., Rena Dugan of Merritt Island, Fla., C.J. Molignaro of Cocoa, Fla., and Faith Wheeler of Rockledge, Fla.; a son, Denford W. Cornett Jr. of Hawaii, a sister, Virginia Catron of Wytheville; and eight grandchildren.

East Coast Cremation in Rockledge, Fla., was in charge of the arrangements.

Lillian Goad Davis

Lillian Goad Davis, 70, of Austinville, died Sunday, April 11, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hal Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late William and Mattie Webb Goad.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sara Diann Eversole; two sisters, Sarah Giacobbe and Irene Rigney; and one brother, Joel Goad.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Davis of Austinville; a daughter and sons-in-law, Wanda and David W. Blair of Austinville, and Doris Eversole Jr. of Austinville; a sister, Elaine Kincer of Woodlawn; three brothers and sisters-in-law, J.P. and Frances Goad, Elder Rush and Anna Marie Goad, all of Hillsville, and Berlie and Romona Goad of Galax; special friends, Addison and Ailene Jones of Austinville; a stepgrandson, Craig Blair of Rural Retreat; a stepgreat-grandchild, Brandon Blair of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Arimathaea Bayles Garrison

Arimathaea "Armi" Bayles Garrison, 91, of Steubenville, Ohio, died Friday, April 9, 1999, at Trinity East, Steubenville, Ohio.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 13, at 11 a.m. at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home in Wintersville, Ohio, with Evangelist Raymond Hagood officiating. Burial was at Fort Steuben Burial Estates, Wintersville, Ohio.

She was born at St. Marys, W.Va., on July 1, 1907, a daughter of the late Marcus and Mary Catherine Masters Bayles. She was a 70-year member of Lovers Lane Church of Christ, Steubenville, Ohio, and a member of Ohio Valley College Stepping Stones.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elzie Sam Garrison in 1964; two brothers, Howard Bayles and Herman Bayles; four sisters, Carrie Bayles, Marjorie Clutter, Ruth Bayles and Evelyn Conklin.

Survivors include two sons, William R. Garrison of Steubenville, Ohio, and Samuel M. Garrison of Cisco, Texas; 10 grandchildren, including a granddaughter and spouse, Kathy and Mark Anderson of Wytheville; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home in Wintersville, Ohio, was in charge of the arrangements.

Lloyd Randolph Lambert

Lloyd Randolph "Randy" Lambert, 47, of the Little Creek Section in Bland County, died Friday, April 9, 1999.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 13, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Johnson and the Rev. Brad Lewis officiating. Interment was in the Hidden Valley cemetery, Little Creek.

He was the maintenance supervisor for the Wythe County Community Hospital where he has been employed for 19 years. He was the son of the late Irvin K. and Florence Gray Lambert.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Alford Lambert.

Survivors include one daughter, Jennie Lambert of Radford; one son, Brian Lambert of Radford; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lillian Vanover, and Carolyn and Randall Meadows, all of Little Creek; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Ralph and Sally Lambert, Conway Lambert, Clint Lambert, all of Little Creek, Cecil and Mary Lambert of Wytheville, and Molly Sue Lambert of Thorpe W.Va.; a special friend, Donnie Wilson of Little Creek; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mary Elizabeth Hounshell Muncy

Mary Elizabeth Hounshell Muncy, 88, of Bland, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, in the Montgomery Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at the Leyburn-Presbyterian Church in Bland with the Rev. June Miller officiating. Interment followed in the Bland cemetery.

She was born Feb. 8, 1911, at Black Lick, Rural Retreat, in Wythe County. She was the daughter of the late J. Harlow and Effie E. Hounshell. She was a life-long member of Marvin United Methodist Church of Black Lick, Wythe County. She was a member of the WOC of the Leyburn-Presbyterian Church in Bland, serving as its president for many years. She graduated from Rural Retreat High School; Radford Teachers College with a B.S. degree; and attended William & Mary College at Williamsburg for some special summer sessions. She taught school for 35 years, serving 31 years as seventh grade teacher and principal of Bastian Elementary School, Bastian, Bland County. She was a member of Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and Inter-National Teacher Organization. She was a member of the Bland County Retired Teacher's Organization.

She was preceded in death in 1952 by her husband, Charles Peery Muncy Jr.; and a son, Joseph "Joe Boy" Hounshell.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Peery III and Margaret Muncy of Christiansburg; a grandson, Charles P. "Chuck" Muncy IV of Christiansburg; two granddaughters, Elizabeth R. Muncy, and Annette Muncy Sherrill and her husband Robert, all of Richmond; a stepgranddaughter, Karen McCann of Christiansburg; two stepgreat-granddaughters, Morgan Sherrill and Lauren Sherrill, both of Richmond; a stepgreat-grandson, Christopher McCann of U.S. Army in Korea; a brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Mozelle Hounshell of Rural Retreat; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bland County Rescue Squad, Christiansburg Rescue Squad or the Leyburn-Presbyterian Church in Bland.
