James Alfred Henley

James Alfred Henley, 76, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 10, at 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Charles Burnett officiating.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Ellis Lee and Mary Taylor Henley and was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was the manager of the Wytheville Livestock Market for 47 years.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Henley, Bill Henley and Ellis Henley; and a sister, Mary Verna Riggsbee.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Wayve Henley of the home; a son, Dr. James Alfred Henley Jr. of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister, Elsie Henley of Richmond; and two brothers, George Henley of Richmond, and Robert Henley of Vinton.

Flowers will be accepted or those who prefer may make memorials to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Wanda Christine Puckett King

Wanda Christine Puckett King, 66, of Bland, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, in the Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 12, at 1 p.m. at the Crandon Christian Church in Bland with Evangelist Steve R. Dawson officiating. Interment will follow in the Bland cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Russell County, a daughter of the late Milford and Cansada Taylor Puckett.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Eddie (Joyce) Mustard.

Survivors include her husband, Garland "Pappy" King of the home; three sons, Garland Ellis King of Fishersville, Larry Carson King and Bradley Eugene King, both of Bland; four sisters, Mrs. Olen (Beulah) Hall and Elizabeth P. Richardson, both of Bland, Mrs. Bernard (Louise) Hagan of Christiansburg, and Mrs. Danny (Sue) Neff of Staunton; three brothers, Clarence Puckett of Bland, Milford Ellis Puckett of Panama City, Fla., and William Ray Puckett of Bland; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Newberry Funeral Home in Bland is in charge of the arrangements.

Henry Chandler Shelton

Henry Chandler Shelton, 82, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. in the Wytheville Baptist Church with Dr. Barry W. Losey officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

He was a son of the late Frank and Cynthia Brackens Shelton. He was the founder of the Willowbrook Baptist Church in Princeton, W.Va., where he served as pastor. He was also founding sponsor of the Pioneer Baptist Church in Max Meadows. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia B. Shelton of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and David Lovingood of Chesapeake; one son and daughter-in-law, David B. and Carolyn Shelton of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Tina Shelton of Alabaster, Ala.; and three grandchildren and a spouse, William and Sherry Haskins of Tazewell, Angela Shelton of San Diego, Calif., and Amy Shelton of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Gabriel Fox Christian

Gabriel Fox Christian, 91, of Fairfax, formerly of Bastian, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, in the Inova Fairfax Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 27, at 11 a.m. at the Greenvalley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Daniel Stowers officiating. Interment will follow in the Neal cemetery in Grapefield.

He was born in Bluefield, W.Va., the son of the late Hiram and Flo Anna Fox Christian.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hester V. Christian.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Delores and Jim Anderson of Fairfax; two granddaughters, Michelle Houssman of Centerville, and Andrea Sisler of Warrenton; five great-granddaughters, Sarah, Brittany, Maggie, Chloe and Patricia; and a sister, Marie Leffel of Bastian.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 West Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Zora Padgett Crawford

Zora Padgett Crawford, 80, of Barren Springs, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 27, at 11 a.m. at the Glenwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tommy Barnes and the Rev. Edwin J. Doerr Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Crawford cemetery.

She was a member of the Glenwood United Methodist Church. She was born in Carroll County, a daughter of the late William Heath and Rachel Locke Gardner Padgett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Foy Crawford Sr.; two sons, George William Crawford and Charlie Lee Crawford; two brothers, Raymond Padgett and James Padgett; and three sisters, Gertrude Winesett, Guidia Rector and Flora Marshall.

Survivors include seven sons and daughters-in-law, Walter Foy Jr. and Patricia Crawford of Cincinnati, Ohio, Roy and Linda Crawford of Barren Springs, Ed and Thelma Crawford of Austinville, Larry Crawford, Joe Crawford, Curt and Cheryl Crawford, all of Barren Springs, and Terry and Ann Crawford of Route 3, Wytheville; six daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Nathaniel Davis of Coal City, W.Va., Janet and Ronald McDaniel of Route 3, Wytheville, Veda Crawford of Barren Springs, Sharon and Danny Dalton of Pulaski, Brenda and Ronnie Coleman of Route 3, Wytheville, and Rachel and Greg Vanover of Sugar Grove; 30 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ruth Mens of Bedford, and Irene Martin of Draper; and two brothers, Clarence Padgett of Abingdon, and Earl Padgett of Rural Retreat.

Jesse Edward DeAtley

Jesse Edward DeAtley, 82, of Bastian, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 25, at 2 p.m. at Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Eugene Herald and the Rev. William Hand officiating. Burial was in the B.G. and Ollie Kitts cemetery in Bastian.

He was born Oct. 27, 1916, in Newport News, a son of the late Edward and Julie Shannon DeAtley. He came to Bland County in 1934 with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the V.F.W. He worked as a first lieutenant for the Bureau of Corrections in Virginia for 29 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Pauline Kitts DeAtley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Albert and Margie DeAtley of Appomattox, and Benny and Kathy DeAtley of Bastian; one brother, John DeAtley of Chesapeake; a sister-in-law, Leona Woods DeAtley of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Steve and Tammy DeAtley, Brian DeAtley of Bastian, Liwana and Wade Cimino of Bastian, and Renia and Kevin Harless of Hinesville, Ga.; four step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, Zacharial DeAtley, Jesse DeAtley, India Cimino, all of Bastian, Brittney Smith, Whittney Smith, Benjamin Harless and Joseph Harless, all of Hinesville, Ga.

Lorene W. Garner

Lorene W. Garner, 76, of Wytheville, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 28, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard officiating. Entombment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Sidney and Bessie Pearl King Hancock.

She was preceded in death by a son, Dale Greene Gilbert.

Survivors include her husband, Hilmer G. Garner of the home; two daughters, Delphia Griffith of Delaware, Md., and Sheron Nester of Dublin; three sons, Douglas Gilbert of Wytheville, Samuel Gilbert of Crewe, and Freddie Gilbert of Bristol; two sisters, Elva Amburn of Wytheville, and Merrietta Hamblin of Front Royal; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 389, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Elsie Margaret Aker Jones

Elsie Margaret Aker Jones, 84, of Route 3, Wytheville, the Piney Community, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 26, at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church. Interment followed in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.

She is survived by five daughters and four sons-in-law, Agnes and Elbert Arnold of Wytheville, Gloria Dunford of Wytheville, Carolyn and Maurice McRoberts of Pleasant Garden, N.C., Mary and M.B. Smith of Wytheville, and Tricia and John Hopkins of Wytheville; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Dallas Jones of Norfolk, Farley and Pat Jones, Tommy and Carol Jones, and Truman and Patty Jones, all of Wytheville; one sister, Alberta Arnold of Newport News; one brother, Muncy Aker of Wytheville; special friends, Gail King, Wanda Dunford, and Millie Rathbone; 24 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.

Gene Edward Kinder

Gene Edward Kinder, 84, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 27, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home with Pastor Ed Schaack officiating. Interment will be in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late James F. and Laura Jane Atkins Kinder. He had worked for the N&W Railway and the Mason & Dixon Trucking Co.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Felty Kinder.

Survivors include five nieces, Hazel Jackson of Plano, Texas, Betty Pickle, Shirley Eversole and Jane Vaught, all of Rural Retreat, and Patsy Watlington of Yanceyville, N.C.; one nephew, Jimmy Kinder of Danville; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home before the service.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

Robert L. Millirons

Robert L. Millirons, 89, of Dublin, died Monday, March 22, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 26, at 1 p.m. at the Davis United Methodist Church in Little Creek with the Rev. Richard Lindamood and the Rev. Richard Csanyi officiating. Interment followed in the Hidden Valley cemetery in Bland.

He was born in Bland, a son of the late Robert Lee and Annie Kate King Millirons and was a member of the Davis United Methodist Church in Little Creek. He was the former president and founder of the R. Lee Millirons Memorial Society. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Burma-China-India Conflict.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Millirons; a son, Robert Lee Millirons Jr.; two brothers, Edgar H. Millirons and G. Louis Millirons; and four sisters, Julia M. Davis, Laura M. Meadows, Vicie M. Davis and Annie M. Hancock.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Eric B. and Suzanne H. Millirons of Richmond; a brother, John D. Millirons of Waynesboro; and two grandchildren, Sharon Millirons of Richmond, and Julie M. Floyd of Getzville, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the R. Lee Millirons Society Educational Fund, c/o Ralph T. Wirt, Route 1 Box 229-B, Pulaski, VA 24301.

Charles B. Stuart

Charles B. "Charlie" Stuart, 74, of Speedwell, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 26, at 2 p.m. at the Speedwell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Perkins officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

He was a son of the late William M. and Mamie Snow Stuart. He was a member of the Speedwell United Methodist Church and was one of the founders and lifetime members of the Speedwell Fire Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Alma Hale Stuart of Speedwell; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Thornton Harris of Ohatchee, Ala.; a son, Larry B. Stuart of Lutz, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Dye of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother, Edward Stuart of Bristol; four grandchildren, Charles E. "Chuck" Kincer and his fiancee' Kim Hanks, Michael S. "Gus" and Georgina Kincer, all of Speedwell, Eric Stuart and Alan Stuart, both of Lutz, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellis George Williams

Ellis George Williams, 83, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 26, at 11 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Robert G. and Ida Corvin Williams. He was a lifelong farmer and orchardist. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, a member of the Rural Retreat Lions Club for over 35 years, a member of the Virginia Horticulture Society, and the Virginia State Apple Association.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Catron Williams; two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha W. and Thomas Hedrick of Roanoke, and Elizabeth and Wayne Perkins of Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert G. and Kathy S. Williams of Wytheville, and Charles C. and Kimberly L. Williams of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, T. Scott Hedrick of Edgewater, Md., Kristen H. Makolandra of Locust Grove, W. Bradley Hedrick of Fredricksburg, Lorri Beth and R. Kevin Williams of Wytheville, and Kahler K. and K. Karrington Williams of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Marie W. Bailey of Crockett; a niece, Reba L. Willard of Rural Retreat; a nephew, Harold Leedy of Crockett; and a stepmother, Perdita Musser Williams of Rural Retreat.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or to the American Cancer Society.
