Nellie I. Viars McRoberts

Nellie I. Viars McRoberts, 88, of Ivanhoe, died Monday, March 22, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 25, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Donnie Keller and Jack King officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, daughter of the late Frank and Cosby Dunford Delby, and was a member of the Forest United Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter McRoberts; and two sons, Joe and Clyde Shinault.

Survivors include one son and three daughters-in-law, Olen and Geraldine Shinault of Route 3, Wytheville, Helen Shinault of Wytheville, and Diana Shinault of Ivanhoe; three stepdaughters and spouse, Ruby Ward of Lakeland, Fla., Dela Stevens of Avon Park, Fla., and Pauline and Virgil Parnell of Cleveland, Ohio; three stepsons and spouses, J.C. and Wanda McRoberts of Cleveland, Ohio, C.L. McRoberts of Pulaski, and Walter D. "Buck" Jr. and Marla McRoberts of Pennsylvania; a sister, Shirley Dunford of Ivanhoe; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville is in charge of the arrangements.

Peggy Jane Crabtree Riddle

Peggy Jane Crabtree Riddle, 65, of Wytheville, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at Newberry Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Sharon cemetery in Ceres.

She was a native of Bland County and a member of the Sharon Lutheran Church. She was retired from Eli Lilly in Roanoke and was presently serving as pianist at the Lebanon Lutheran Church in Wytheville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Paul and Nancy Gibson Crabtree of Ceres.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Roddy R. and Anna B. Crabtree of Marion and several cousins.

Newberry Funeral Home in Bland was in charge of the arrangements.

William Ralph Rudy

William Ralph Rudy, 90, of Poplar Camp, died Monday, March 22, 1999.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 24, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald White and the Rev. Vicki Neese officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

A native of Wythe County, he lived and worked his family farm. He was a charter member of the Lead Mines Ruritan Club, where, during his 50 years, he served as president during several terms. He was a lifelong member of the Bethany United Methodist Church, playing an active role as Sunday school superintendent, board chairperson and trustee. He also served two terms on the Wythe County Board of Supervisors for the Lead Mines district.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bartie T. Rudy; and two sons, Mahlon Kyle Rudy, and William Thomas Rudy.

Survivors include his daughter, Martha R. Neese of Poplar Camp; his daughter-in-law, Barbara G. Rudy of Poplar Camp; a sister, Mary R. Trombley of Morristown, Tenn.; grandchildren, the Rev. Vicki Neese of Roan Mountain, Tenn., Rudy and Connie Neese of Austinville, Susan Rudy of Poplar Camp, Beckie and Carl Johnston of Rhoadesville, and Kyle Rudy of New York City, N.Y.; and five great-grandchildren, B.J. Davis, Rudy Boroughs, Kasey and Katie Neese, and Ashley Weaver.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial contributions to the Bethany United Methodist Church, c/o Bob Dean, Route 3 Box 206, Max Meadows, VA 24360.

Charles B. Stuart, 74, of Speedwell, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999.

Frank Vickers

Frank Vickers, 81, of Water Front Estates, Claytor Lake, Draper, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at his residence, after a long illness.

The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday, March 24, at 11 a.m. from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bluefield, W.Va., with Father Patsy Iaquinta officiating. Entombment will follow at the Woodlawn cemetery Mausoleum, Bluewell, W.Va., with Bluefield VFW Post # 9696 and American Legion Post #14 Pocahontas conducting the military graveside rites. A prayer service was held Tuesday, March 23, at 8 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.

He and his family were former residents of Charleston, W.Va., prior to moving to Bluefield, Va., in 1969. Born Jan. 17, 1918, in Lockport, N.Y., he was the first son of Greek immigrants, the late Steve Vickers and the late Mary Rapanakis Vickers. Formerly a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bluefield, W.Va., he was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church, Pulaski. He attended schools in Gary, W.Va., and furthered his education through the University of Maryland.

Upon enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1936, he received special training in a wide variety of special courses enabling him to have a diverse background in management. He was also a graduate of the Lewis Hotel Training School in Washington, D.C. He retired with distinction and honors as Chief Warrant Officer in 1966, after a 30 year career with the U.S. Army serving in Panama, Thule, Greenland, Hawaii, Japan, and Italy, and ended with his last assignment as advisor to the West Virginia National Guard in Charleston, W.Va. In 1966, he was named manager of Heart O' Town Motor Inn (now the Charleston House) and later became managing director both these and at the Weirton, W.Va., Heart O' Town Motor Inn, as well. He was invited to manage the Charleston law firm of Preiser and Wilson and stayed with them for eight years.

Upon moving to Bluefield, he was invited to become executive director of Fincastle Country Club, after having been a member for many years. He has been a member of the American Academy of Legal Assistants and belonged to several civic, social and professional associations including the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Knights of Columbus, Lions Clubs, and The Retired Officers Association, both in Charleston, W.Va. and Roanoke and AARP.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Vickers; and a grandson, Jason Rooker.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary (Angelelli) Vickers of Draper; a brother, Mike Vickers of Cleveland, Ohio; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Frances and Daniel Gregory Rooker of Radford, Valerie Ann and Curtis Randal Hostetler of Glen Allen, and Shirley Katherine and Steven Patrick Conley of Midlothian; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 24, from 10 a.m. until service time at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bluefield, W.Va.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorials be made to the Jason Foundation (to help people with brain injuries and their families) at P.O. Box 430, Radford, VA 24141.

Rosa Marion Williams

Rosa Marion Williams, 63, of Wytheville, the Cripple Creek community, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 22, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the Davis cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. "Bobby" Williams; and a sister, Verlie "Tootie" Williams.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Gayle and David Colon of Wytheville, Robin Williams of Wytheville, and Karen and Wayne Aills of Titusville, Fla.; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Barbara Marion of Waynesboro; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Martha Brunk Corder

Martha Brunk Corder, 49, of Little Creek in Bland County, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Csanyi officiating. Interment will be in the Goshen cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Fred C. Corder of the home; a daughter, Patricia Ruth Corder of Ceres; a son and daughter-in-law, Charlie Neal and Chrystal Corder of Pearisburg; her parents, Junior and Hazel Wolf Brunk of Little Creek; a sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Tracy McKinny; a brother and sister-in-law, Everett and Barbara Brunk; and several nieces, nephews and friends of hospice.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 West Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Maurice Hale Cullop Jr.

Maurice Hale "Bub" Cullop Jr., 69, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, at his residence.

Graveside services and interment will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. at the West End cemetery.

He was born in Smyth County, a son of the late Maurice H. Cullop Sr. and Pearl Virginia Myers Cullop. He was a member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church where he served on the board of trustees. He was a professional driver with Hemingway Transport Service for over 29 years and was the recipient of numerous safe driver awards. He was a retired member of Teamster Union 171. In retirement, he was a gifted craftsman of miniature furniture with his work being featured in several major craft publications.

Survivors include his wife, Ina "Betty" Williams Cullop of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Tom Park of Fredericksburg, and Anita and Bobby Thompson of Richmond; one granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth Park of Richmond; three brothers, Charles P. Cullop of Greenville, N.C., Richard D. Cullop of Fayetteville, N.C., and William C. Cullop of Marion; one sister, Peggy C. Williams of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.

Pauline Cantrell

Pauline Cantrell, 73, of Princeton, W.Va., died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, in Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services and interment will be private.

She was born in Bradshaw, W.Va., a daughter of the late Isaac and Mary Alice Rowe Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Edgar Cantrell; three sisters, Ethel Phifer, Dora King, and Opal Johnson; two brothers, Clarence Roberts and Perry Roberts; a half-brother, Squire Johnson; and two half-sisters, Rose Addair and Viola Waldron.

Survivors include two daughters, Tina Broyles of Virginia, and Noka Cantrell of Michigan; three sons, Rufus Edgar Cantrell Jr. of Princeton, W.Va., Terry Cantrell and Eddie Gene Cantrell, both of West Virginia; two sisters, Gracie Pyner of Florida and Margie Payne of Rocky Gap; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Thomas R. Coppybarger

Thomas R. "Tommy" Coppybarger, 88, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, in the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Martin officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

He was the son of the late Thomas J. and Alice Turner Coppybarger. He was retired from the Service Gas Company.

He is survived by his wife, Alma Taylor Coppybarger of the home; one daughter, Emily C. Hounshell of Wytheville; two grandchildren and spouses, Tammy and John Shumate of Rural Retreat, and Michael and Beverly Hounshell of Wytheville; and one great-grandchild, Dallas Ritchie Shumate of Rural Retreat.

Tyre York Crouse

Tyre York Crouse, 57, of Dublin, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at Radford Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. Jim Linkous and the Rev. Sam Holder officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.

He was born in Wythe County, on July 7, 1941, and was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dock Montgomery Crouse. He retired from the Pulaski County Public Service Authority in 1988 after 14 years of service.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Retha Gunter and Clara Arnold; and one brother, Dewey Crouse.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret "Ruby" Boyd Crouse of Dublin; a son, Timothy Lynn Crouse of Dublin; two sisters, Dorothy Lowe of Low Gap, N.C., and Ruby Hardin of Wytheville; one brother, Albert Crouse of Fries; one brother-in-law, William Ray Boyd of Dublin; special friends, Lee and Ivy Colley, Ronald, Barbara, Sharon, and Jimmy Dean Poole, Larry and Linda Sigmon, and the Buffalo Mountain Hoedowners; and many special nieces and nephews.

Gladys Hoilman Gusler

Gladys Hoilman Gusler, 88, of White Gate, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at Pulaski Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Homer D. Sawyer officiating. Burial will be in the Walkers Creek cemetery, White Gate.

She was born Sept. 10, 1910, at Mechanicsburg, a daughter of the late Thomas H. and Jeanette Patton Hoilman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Andrew Gusler; and a son, John Derle Gusler.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Alene Gusler of White Gate, and Evelyn and John Dorsa of Venice, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Shelbie Wiley Gusler of White Gate; two grandchildren, Mark Gusler and Robert Wiley; four great-grandchildren, Molly Gusler, Andrew Gusler, Matt Wiley and Crystal Wiley; and one sister, Flora McGuire of Mechanicsburg.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home.
