Michael Wayne Cassell

Michael Wayne Cassell, 35, of Marion, formerly of Wytheville, died Thursday, March 12, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Will Shewey and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

He was a truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his father, Billy R. Cassell.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Cassell of the home; two daughters, Elizabeth Marie Cassell, and Crystal Lynn Cassell of the home; his mother, Lois Eversole Stroupe of Wytheville; two brothers and sister-in-law, James Allen and Josephine Herring Jr., and Alfred Ray Stroupe III, both of Wytheville; a special nephew, James Allen "Jimmy" Herring III of Wytheville; a special aunt, Lillie Mae Fisher of Wytheville; and several aunts, uncles and special cousins.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence of Lillie Fisher at E. Ridge St., Wytheville at any time.

Margaret Stowers Compton

Margaret Stowers Compton, 86, of Wytheville, died Thursday, March 12, 1998.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Compton; and a grandson, Michael Shawn Compton.

Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Billie Jo Tackish of Maryland, Elizabeth C. Brooks of Roanoke, Carol C. Young of Washington, Nancy and Marvin Simmons of Roanoke, and Karen and K.D. Sexton of Wytheville; five sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Judy Compton of North Dakota, Don and Sharon Compton of Grayson County, Bob and Ella Compton of Bland, David T. Compton, and Allan D. Compton, both of Wytheville; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 389, Wytheville, VA 24382, or to their favorite charity.

John Ralph Powers

John Ralph Powers, 80, of Pulaski, died Monday, March 9, 1998, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Coffey Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood cemetery. Pulaski Masonic Lodge conducted graveside military rites.

He was born in Rural Retreat on July 10, 1917, and was a son of the late Emory Cooper Powers and Alma Vaughan Powers. He was a member and a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United State Air Force. He was a 50-year member of the Pulaski Masonic Lodge. He was a former owner and operator of Food Fair and the Foodettes in Pulaski, and was currently the manager of MacGill Village, Pulaski.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Mink Powers; a son, Marvin Kenneth Powers; six brothers and one sister.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Violet and John W. Nash Jr. of Pulaski; a daughter-in-law, Barbara T. Powers of Pulaski; three sisters, Ethel Lewellyn, Mabel Peake, and Erma Marshall, all of Pulaski; two brothers, Thomas G. Powers, and Allan G. Powers, both of Pulaski; six grandchildren, John Nash III, Greg Nash, Mary Catherine Whitaker, Bradley Powers, Channing Powers, and Kari Mooseberg; one great-granddaughter, Ericka Denise Nash; and special family, Christopher Earl Taliaferro, and Dr. John "Skip" Dauernheim.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church Logos Program Bus Fund, P.O. Box 824, Pulaski, VA 24301.

Thurnia C. Reed

Thurnia C. Reed, 76, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 12, at 11 a.m. at the Bethel United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas C. Reed Sr.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Tom and Judy Reed Franklin of Richmond, and Artie and Joyce Reed Miller of Wytheville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dallas C. Sr. and Velma Reed, and Jerry Wayne Reed, all of Wytheville; four sisters, Mrs. Charlie (Elvirie) Corvin of Wytheville, Mrs. Lawrence (Ella) Phillippi of Pulaski, Mrs. James (Frances) Cline of Hurt, and Mrs. R.J. (Minnie) Brown of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 389, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Diana Elizabeth Quesenberry Cox

Diana Elizabeth Quesenberry Cox, 94, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 10, at 2 p.m. at the Maranatha Church of God with the Rev. Tony Holley officiating. Interment followed in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

She was born in Draper, a daughter of the late James Montgomery and Mary Lawson Quesenberry. She was a member of the Maranatha Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Lee Cox; two children, Ophie Kenneth Cox and Arthur Lee Cox Jr.; six brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include four daughters, Louise Jenkins of Portsmouth, Mrs. Luther (Layuna) Jones of East Lake, Ohio, Mrs. Stewart (Betty) Rose of Princeton, W.Va., and Mrs. Glen (Ora Jean) Lance of Creston, Ohio; two sons, J.D. Cox of Wilco, W.Va., and Clyde Cox of Pineville, W.Va.; two sisters, Frances Windle and Mrs. Walter (Ella) Frazier, both of Wytheville; 27 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Amanda Hall King

Amanda Hall King, 87, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center in Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 10, at 11 a.m. at the Sharon Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was a member of the Sharon Baptist Church in Rural Retreat.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Douglas King; and one son, James Wallace King.

Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Lena and James Matney of Crockett, Reba and James Kincer of Rural Retreat, Myrtle and Garney Trivett of Elkton, Md., Mozelle and Fred Bridges of Rural Retreat, Betty and J.B. Montgomery of Burlington, N.C., and Charlotte Kincer of Syracuse, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Sharon Baptist Church cemetery Fund.

Harold Landon King

Harold Landon King, 60, of Charlotte, N.C., died Monday, July 6, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 9, at 1 p.m. at McEwen Pineville Chapel with the Rev. Ben DeVoid and the Rev. Joe Weatherly officiating. Interment followed in Sharon Memorial Park.

He was born Oct. 28, 1937, a son of the late Kahle William King Sr. and the late Hazel Vaught King. He attended VPI, was a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired as a driller for Law Engineering after 36 years of service. He was a member of St. Francis United Methodist Church, a member of King Sunday school class and was a faithful blood donor to the American Red Cross through ut the years.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Doris Jane Deweese King; a son and daughter-in-law, Kerry Deweese and Jennifer Guthrie King of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, DeAnna Rae King of Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Adam Deweese King and Matthew Caper King; three brothers, Dr. Charles C. King of Siler City, N.C., Don King and K.W. King, both of Crockett; three sisters, Mary Helen Epperly of Wytheville, Josephine Bralley of Roanoke, and Anne Clark of Clarksville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Francis United Methodist Church Building Fund, 4200 McKee Rd., Charlotte NC 28270 or to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204, or the charity of donors choice.

Peggy Buck Shockley

Peggy Buck Shockley, 57, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, in the Lewis-Gale Hospital.

Graveside service and interment will be held Saturday, July 11, at 11 a.m. at the West End cemetery with the Rev. Mark Grubb officiating.

She graduated from George Wythe High School and attended Radford University. She was an employee of Big A and Acme Supermarkets for 16 years and was a member of the West End United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Shockley; and her father, James Leon Buck.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy Mills Hudgins and Douglas B. Hudgins of Blacksburg, and Cindy Mills Cates and James W. Cates II of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Allison Dyer, Zachary Hudgins and John Dyer; her mother, Lowangie Crowder Buck of Wytheville; a sister, Beverly Jane Buck Lynch of Wytheville; a niece, Zaida Lynch Dix of Brunswick, Ga.; a nephew, William B. "Will" Lynch of Wytheville; and host of close friends.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the West End United Methodist Church.

Virginia Doss Spraker

Virginia Doss Spraker, 76, of Ivanhoe, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, in the Lewis Gale Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 10, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Rick Lindamood officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

She was born in Max Meadows, a daughter of the late Sampson P. and Josie Ellen Wheeler Doss. She was a member of the Forest United Methodist Church where she was a choir member.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Edwin Doss, Howard Doss, Paul Doss, Carl Doss, and Olen Doss; and a sister, Clara Doss.

Survivors include her husband, Charles C. Spraker Jr. of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Bob Mahar of London Ontario, Canada; two sisters, Kathryn Cregger of Max Meadows, and Joyce Eddy of Wytheville; two granddaughters, Christina Ann Peery and Michelle Leigh Fisher, both of Woodbridge; a great-grandson, Zachary Taylor Peery of Woodbridge; and several nieces and nephews.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville was in charge of the arrangements.

Emma Ozella M. Havens

Emma Ozella M. Havens, 79, of Route 2, Bland, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 1996, in the Bluefield Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tim Williams officiating. Interment followed in Hoges Chapel cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Emory and Vera Morehead.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred John Havens.

Survivors include one daughter, Janet Weddle of Rocky Gap; one son, Larry Havens of Bland; one brother, Earnest L. Morehead of Wytheville; one step-brother, David Morehead of Bland; one step-sister, Mary Lee Caldwell of Bland; and two granddaughters, two grandsons, and two great-grandchildren.

Edward McAllister Hopkins

Edward McAllister "Pete" Hopkins, 66, of Pulaski, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 1996, in the VA Medical Center, Salem.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m., from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. Ed Greer officiating. Burial will follow in the Draper cemetery, Pulaski.

He was born in Max Meadows on March 27, 1930, and was a son of the late Charles Vinton Hopkins Sr. and Emma Collins Hopkins. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Pulaski. He was a commercial and residential builder, realtor and developer in Chesterfield County for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita Boyd Hopkins of Pulaski; a daughter, Jacqueline Hodges of Pulaski; two sons, Jerry Edward Hopkins of Chesterfield County, and James Vinton Hopkins of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Leona McDavid of Orlando, Fla., and Ruth St. John of Bristol; six brothers, Williams Hopkins, Elmer Hopkins, both of Max Meadows, Jesse Hopkins, Marion Hopkins, both of Pulaski, Charles Vinton Hopkins Jr. of Draper, and Thomas Hopkins of Chester; and five grandchildren.

James Gilmer Keith

James Gilmer "Jim" Keith, 77, of Cripple Creek, died Monday, Sept. 23, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Cripple Creek Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Rebecca Spicer and the Rev. Sonny Ayers officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Peter's Lutheran cemetery. The American Post No. 9 will conduct graveside military rites. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was born in Cripple Creek, the son of the late Payton and Annie Roberts Keith. An ex-POW of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion Post No. 9 and the V.F.W. Post No. 2719 in Wytheville. He was a long time member of the Cripple Creek Church of God of Prophecy.

He is survived by his wife, Ola Cline Keith of the home; one son, Ralph L. Keith of Max Meadows; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jerry Stuart, and Carolyn and Michael Hale, all of Speedwell; one granddaughter, Tracy Lynn Stuart; and four grandsons, Brian Stuart, James "Jimmy" Keith, Jason Hale, and Joshua Hale.
