Dora Belle Ramsey Pauley

Dora Belle Ramsey Pauley, 72, of Bland, died Friday, Sept. 20, 1996, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. at the Bland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. Interment followed in the Bland cemetery.

She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Otho and Nina Sarver Ramsey. She was a member of the Bland Methodist Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

She is survived by her husband, Paul R. Pauley of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Steve Nelson, Martha Pauley, Kaveda and Bill Reynolds, and Billie and Robert Sheets, all of Bland; two sisters, Mildred Dillow of Bland, and Marita Love of Richlands; four brothers, Sherman Ramsey of Winston Salem, N.C., Sam Ramsey of Badinlake, N.C., Bruce Ramsey of Mocksville, N.C., and Bob Ramsey of Washington State; and three grandchildren, Tresila S. Lambert, Brandon Sink, and Allison Dean Sheets.

John B. Porterfield

John Buchanan Porterfield, 81, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 1996, at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Wytheville Oct. 5, 1914, the son of the late Amanda Pearl Huffard and John L. Porterfield. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi at Davidson College, where he graduated in 1935. He joined the U.S. Army in 1941, and served with the Medical Corps of the 79th Infantry Division in the European Theater from Normandy until the end of the war. He was awarded the bronze star for bravery in action against the enemy and honorably discharged as a Major in 1946. He married Emily Ide Wheaton on July 16, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio, and in 1946 moved to New York, where his children were born. He was chairman of the John B. Porterfield Textile Company, headquartered in Manhattan, for 30 years. He was a member of the Union League Club and the Bronxville Field Club. He served as the chairman of the Bronxville Boy Scouts, president of the PTA of the Bronxville schools, and chairman of the Bronxville Library Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Great Consistory of the Reformed Church of Bronxville and a Sunday school teacher.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Ide Wheaton Porterfield; a daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Mark D. Kline; a son and daughter-in-law, John L. and Andrea Porterfield; and three grandchildren, Nicolas Porterfield Kline, Sara Almasy Porterfield, and William Buchanan Porterfield.

Fred H. McGrath and Sons Inc. in Bronxville, N.Y. was in charge of the arrangements.

Gilbert Walter Sheppard

Gilbert Walter Sheppard, 78, of Route 1, Pulaski, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 1996, in Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. J.P. Hale officiating. Burial followed in Thorn Spring cemetery.

Born Dec. 2, 1917, in Pulaski County, he was the son of the late William Parrish Sheppard and Ida Havens Sheppard.

He was preceded in death by a wife, Katherine Jones Sheppard; and a grandson, William Stephen Sheppard.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Bandy Sheppard; one son and daughter-in-law, Rev. and Mrs. Dennis R. Sheppard of Max Meadows; one daughter, Mrs. Harold "Jolyn" Linkous of Clayton, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Henry "Willie" Jeter of Vinton; six grandchildren, including Rayelee Sheppard of Max Meadows, Suelyn Arnold and her husband, Scott, of Max Meadows, Melita Duty and her husband, Mark, of Dever, Texas, and Sarah Buchanan and her husband, Keith, of Morganton, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren, Kari Arnold, Holly Arnold, Hannah Duty, and Mitchell Buchanan.

Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Service in Pulaski was in charge of the arrangements.

Frank Weidel Spraker

Frank Weidel Spraker, 78, of Grundy, formerly of Cripple Creek, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 1996.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Methodist Church with the Rev. Jay Ferguson officiating. Burial was in the Laurel Grove cemetery in Norton. Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion and Childs Gentry Post No. 7360 of the Veteran of Foreign Wars.

He was born in Cripple Creek. He was well-known as "Torar" at the old Wytheville High School. He was a graduate of Milligan College and received his Master's Degree from the University of Tennessee. He has been a resident of Grundy since the summer of 1952. He was an active member of Grundy United Methodist Church, and taught the Adult Sunday school class for more than 20 years, served on Administrative Council and the Finance Committee. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for many years, serving as president of the Grundy Kiwanis Club, lieutenant governor of Capital District and was secretary of the Grundy Kiwanis Club 35 years. He served in the United States Army during World War II, having served as a Medic in North Africa and Italy. He was a retired employee of the Buchanan County School System, having served as football coach, Athletic Director of Grundy Senior High School. In 1994, he was inducted into the Wythe County Athletic Hall of Fame, and in October 1996 he was to have been inducted into Milligan College Athletics Hall of Fame. He played football at Wytheville High School and Milligan College.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett B. "Billy" and Mary "Mamie" Smith Spraker of Cripple Creek; and seven brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Boatwright Spraker of Grundy; a daughter, Cynthia Musick of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Frank Weidel Spraker Jr. of Grundy, and Robert Gregory Spraker of Woodbridge; a sister, Mary Ella Corvin of Wytheville; a brother, Paul Spraker of Richmond; and three grandchildren, Grey and Spraker, and Lindsay Musick.

Dorothy Jane Steidley

Dorothy Jane Steidley, 92, of Asbury Center at Birdmont, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. at the chapel at Asbury Center at Birdmont with Dr. William Rodgers and Rev. Steve Tilley officiating.

She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, a daughter of the late Herbert J. and Bertha Lamoreaux Steidley, and was retired from the Sun Oil Company.

She is survived by a sister, Louise Sharitz of Birdmont; one niece, Bonnie Cook of Charlotte, N.C.; two nephews and wives, Thomas C. and Nina Steidley of Maitland, Fla., and Richard A. and Hilde Steidley of Winter Park, Fla.; and seven great-nieces and nephews, Heather and Amy Cook, Sharon Carter, Terri Ross, and Thomas C. Steidley III, Kathleen Hasbrouck and Ronald Steidley.

George Pepper Carroll Young

George Pepper Carroll Young, 94, died Friday, Sept. 20, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel, Wytheville. Interment will be Thursday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. in the Hollywood cemetery in Richmond.

He was a retired prominent Wythe County Attorney, and a son of the late Bascom Wills Young and Adelaide Dodamead Young. The Virginia native attended high school in Blackstone, and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Virginia. He began his career after graduation from the University of Virginia Law School. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the Raven Society and the Virginia State Bar. In the late 1920's, he settled in Wytheville where he practiced law for well over half a century.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hoge Young, and Bascom B. Young, M.D.; and a sister, Hannah Wickline.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, and special friends, Preach and Dee Phillips.

The family suggests that those who prefer, may make memorial contributions to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 389, Wytheville, Virginia 24382.

Ethel Rose Anders Carrico

Ethel Rose Anders Carrico, 82, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at her residence in the Providence community near Fries.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 8 p.m. in Providence United Methodist Church with the Rev. Helen Shaw officiating. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Mountain View Friends cemetery.

She was born March 14, 1916, at Independence, daughter of the late Elbert and Cynthia Murray Anders. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church. She was the widow of James Harvey Carrico.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Helen Carrico, Joe and Freda Carrico, all of Wytheville, and R.D. "Dick" and Frankee Carrico of Woodlawn; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Patsy and Vernon Bedwell of Galax, Martha McGreggor of Pueblo, Colo., Alice and Dan Christensen of Suring, Wis., Rosie and Mike Aker of Wytheville, and Jane Moore of Fries; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Ruth Anders of Independence; four sisters-in-law, Lou Jean Anders of Independence, Nannie Murphy, Virginia Caudell, and Molly Hines, all of Fries; a special sister-in-law, Faye Anders of Independence; a brother-in-law, Ralph Edwards of Galax; 18 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to Providence United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, c/o Christine Hall, 153 Bainbridge Rd., Fries, VA 24330.

Fred Leonard Crigger

Fred Leonard Crigger, 84, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Eddie Noe. Interment was in the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was a son of the late William F. and Lettie Hedrick Crigger. He was an outdoorsman and a well-known tile and carpet installer in the area. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and Royal Order of the Oaks.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ernest Wade Crigger.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mabel Hedrick Crigger of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Chip Clemmer of Crockett; a son and daughter-in-law, Frank L. and Judy A. Crigger of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth C. and Ellis Mitchum of Wytheville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lloyd W. and Lottie Crigger of Wytheville, and Rufus R. and Elizabeth Crigger of Rural Retreat; a granddaughter and spouse, Melissa Dawn and Jeffrey Hodge of Wytheville; two great-granddaughters, Megan Nicole Hodge, and Kelsey Denae Hodge, both of Wytheville; and many nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be appreciated or donations may be made to the Blue Ridge Multiple Sclerosis Society of Virginia or to the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist church Building Fund.

Raymond Quesenberry

Raymond "Burdock" Quesenberry, 78, of Draper, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the Draper Memorial Christian Church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Nannie Q. Gravley; and a brother, Robert Preston Gravley.

Survivors include five sisters, Lena Quesenberry of Barren Springs, Jennie Lou Stillwell of Draper, Dorothy Wall of Pulaski, Ruby Summers of Dublin, and Shirley Arnold of Route 3, Wytheville; and two brothers, Harry Quesenberry of Draper, and Hugh Gravley of Staley, N.C.

Julian Graham Rickey

Julian Graham "Shug" Rickey, 75, of Max Meadows, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, in the Veterans Hospital in Asheville, N.C.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Randy Morris. Interment was in the West End cemetery. The American Legion Post No. 9 conducted military graveside rites.

He was the son of the late Wythe and Linnie Porter Rickey.

He is survived by one son, Joshua Bolin of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Emily R. Michaelis of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Marlene Keyes Sult

Marlene Keyes Sult, 38, of Rural Retreat, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Summit Baptist Church with the Rev. Jody Blevins officiating. Interment followed in the Slemp cemetery in Sugar Grove.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Sult, and Crystal Dawn Sult, both of the home; her father, Bob Anderson of Rural Retreat; her mother, Myrtle Elizabeth Blevins of Rural Retreat; four sisters, Candy Rose of Wytheville, Eva Sexton of Marion, Ruth McDonald of North Carolina, and Nancy Keyes of Bristol; five brothers, Mike Anderson, Gary Anderson, both of Rural Retreat, Buddy Keyes, and Gary Keyes, both of Maryland, and Ernie Keyes of Sugar Grove; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Janie Hale Black

Janie Hale Black, 87, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 29, at 1 p.m. at the Bethel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Leonard Davis, the Rev. Levi Turner, the Rev. Thomas Braxton and Pastor Mary A. McKinney officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Max Meadows, a daughter of the late Joseph and Edda Lewis Hale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Black; a daughter, Mattie Black; and a son, Fred Anderson.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley T. "Willie" Blackwood of Wytheville; a son, Alfred Vernon Hale of Covington; four sisters, Ella Johnson, Elizabeth McMillian and Maggie Brown, all of Wytheville, and Helen Sessons of Columbus, Ohio; a special nephew, James Hale of Wytheville; ten grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 28, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Cora Lee Hale Groseclose

Cora Lee Hale Groseclose, 89, of Crockett, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 27, at 2 p.m. in the Mt. Ephraim United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Mike Mowery and the Rev. Robert Layell. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Donnie Groseclose; and her husband, John S. Groseclose.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Dan Wright of Fries, Paige Cranor of Crockett, and Jo Ann and Quincey Bridgers of Speedwell; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Evelyne Groseclose of Camp; four grandchildren, Brenda Todd, Jerry Wright, Mark Groseclose and Rickey Bridgers; and five great-grandchildren, Johnathan Bridgers, Matthew Todd, Amanda Todd, Shane Groseclose and Kayla Groseclose.
