William F. Milgrim Sr.

William F. Milgrim Sr., 55, of Vinton, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, in the Roanoke Cancer Rehab Hospital.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.

He was born Sept. 9, 1943, in Wytheville, a son of the late C. Elmo Milgrim and Amy Marshall Milgrim. He graduated from East Tennessee State University and began a teaching and coaching career of 15 years. He taught and coached for 13 years at Fort Chiswell High School. In 1982 he began a new career with State Farm Insurance Company as a claims adjuster and at the time of his death was a team manager of the special investigative unit for State Farm. He served as a vice-president and president of the International Association of Arson Investigators and was active in educating and supporting the IAAI activities.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Pat H. Milgrim; a son, Chip Milgrim of Jarratt; a daughter, Chris Milgrim of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his mother, Amy Milgrim of Wytheville; a brother, John Milgrim of Fairfax; and three grandchildren.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Oakey's Vinton Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

George Thomas Price

George Thomas Price, 62, of Barren Springs, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, in the Pulaski County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Glenwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tommy Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in the Crawford cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Eddie B. Price and Jackie Price Dickerson. He served in the U.S. Army and Navy.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Bob Dickerson.

Survivors include a special friend, Martha Ann Miller of Barren Springs; two aunts, Zora Crawford, and Gertie Crawford, both of Barren Springs; and numerous cousins.

Arthur Talmadge Akers

Arthur Talmadge Akers, 88, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, in a Roanoke hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to service time.

He was preceded in death by a son, Fredrick L. Akers.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Clara J. Akers of Max Meadows; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Roncie "Buddy" Morrison of Alexandria, and Phyllis and David Kirby of Max Meadows; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sibbie Akers of Max Meadows; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

William Talmage Atkins Sr.

William Talmage "Tam" Atkins Sr., 88, of Wytheville, died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles Burnett officiating. Interment was in the West End cemetery.

He was the owner of Atkins Tire & Battery and was one of the charter members of the Wytheville Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Groseclose Atkins.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean A. Brindle and Peg A. Phillips, both of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, William T. "Bill" Jr. and Jo Carole Atkins of Wytheville; one sister, Irene Huddle of Kingsport, Tenn.; one brother and sister-in-law, Harlow and Hazel Atkins of Marion; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two stepgrandchildren.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Juanita King Burnett

Juanita King Burnett, 68, of Ivanhoe, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Wytheville Original Church of God with the Rev. Bill Dale and the Rev. Penny Dale officiating. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery, Ivanhoe.

She was a daughter of the late William R. and Mary McRoberts King.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Alley.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence Wayne Burnett of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Farris and Jeff Pauley of Austinville, Jewel and Stuart Pettus of Amelia, and Christina and Carl Worrell of Hillsville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Gloria Stanley of Richmond, and George and Marlena Stanley of Cripple Creek; one stepdaughter, Lisa Burnett of Wytheville; two stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Tim and Marsha Burnett of Wytheville, and Keith and Robin Burnett of Ivanhoe; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Peggy and Robert Burnett, and Rowena King, all of Ivanhoe; six brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Gail King of Wytheville, James and Jean King of Ivanhoe, William and Janet King of Draper, Roger and Teresa King of Ivanhoe, Douglas and Donna King of Wytheville, and Paul and Malinda King of Ivanhoe; 17 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wytheville Original Church of God or at the resident at anytime.

Lewis W. Dillow

Lewis W. Dillow, 61, of Chesapeake, and a native of Bland, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home.

He served in the U.S. Navy, was a graduate of Old Dominion University and was self-employed as a real estate broker. He was a former member of Bland United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Lena Dillow; and a brother, Otis R. "Randy" Dillow.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Dillow of Suffolk; a granddaughter, Shea Dillow of Suffolk; one brother, Harry L. Dillow of Bland; five sisters and one brother-in-law, Ruth D. Hardin of Speedwell, Alberta Brammer of Salem, Mary D. and Johnny Wilson of Portsmouth, Louise D. Hall and Elsie D. Brown, both of Bland; a sister-in-law, Jeanne Dillow Cutrell of Pueblo, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.

Mary Virginia Bralley Dodson

Mary Virginia Bralley Dodson, 88, of Martinsville, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Norris Funeral Services Chapel. Interment followed in the Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville.

She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Ann Prillaman of Martinsville; two sons, Bill Dodson and Mike Dodson, both of Martinsville; four sisters, Nell Lawson of Elliston, Kathleen Wright and Iris Manuel, both of Wytheville, and Louise Bralley of Meadowville; one brother, Bill Bralley of Willoughby, Ohio; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville was in charge of the arrangements.

Kimberly Francis

Kimberly Francis, 24, of Wytheville, formerly of Beach Haven, Pa., died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center from injuries sustained an automobile accident on Nov. 23.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home, 1024 Market St., Berwick, Pa., with the Rev. Jim P. Winder, pastor of the Cornerstone Bible Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion cemetery in Briggsville, Pa.

She was born Nov. 3, 1974, in Williamsport, Pa., a daughter of Kent A. and Karen Kishbaugh Kissinger Sr. She moved to Wytheville in March 1998. She was a part-time employee of Bob Evans in Wytheville. In Pennsylvania she had worked with the Lady Esther Corp.

She is survived by her fiancé, Anthony May of Wytheville; her parents, Kent A. and Karen Kishbaugh Kissinger Sr. of Beach Haven, Pa.; two sons, Randy Francis and Benjamin Francis; a daughter, Kierstin May; three brothers, Kent A. Kissinger Jr. of Providence, R.I., Kraig V. Kissinger of West Roxbury, Mass., and Richard K. Kissinger of Beach Haven, Pa.; two sisters, Kristen M. Kissinger of Bloomsburg, Pa., and Sarania L. Kissinger of Beach Haven, Pa.; and maternal grandparents, Belvin and June Kishbaugh of Beach Haven, Pa.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Francis Children Fund, c/o M&T Bank, Front and Mulberry St., Berwick, PA 18603.

Anita Sullivan Simmons

Anita Sullivan Simmons, 46, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at her residence.

A graveside service will be held Friday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Stoney Fork Community Church cemetery in Wytheville with the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Kimberly Simmons of the home, and Angela and Billy Joe Chandler of Rural Retreat; a special grandson, Billy Joe Chandler Jr.; her mother and stepfather, Elizabeth and Wayne Viars of Austinville; four sisters, Peggy Sullivan of Dublin, Mona Weeks of Floyd, Mechelle Viars of Austinville, and Barbara Sullivan of Grahams Forge; and two brothers, Johnny Sullivan of Pulaski, and Billy Viars of Austinville.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Dec. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel or at the residence of her daughter, Angela Chandler in Rural Retreat, at any time.

Andrew Hale Snyder

Andrew Hale Snyder, 42, of Portsmouth, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, in the Maryview Medical Center.

A graveside service and interment will be held Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Bland cemetery with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating.

He is survived by two daughters, Jessica Lee Snyder and Melissa Lynn Snyder, both of Portsmouth; his parents, Leroy Ralph Snyder of Orlando, Fla., and Betty Jean Muncy Snyder of Portsmouth; a sister, Diana Lynn Snyder Kriehn of Richmond; a brother, W. Eric Snyder of Portsmouth; a sister-in-law, Meridith Ann Whitley Snyder; two nieces, Kristina Marie Snyder and Dawn Michelle Quillen Abbott; a nephew, Andrew Ryan Snyder; and a great-niece, Ashlee Michelle Abbott.

Ruth Umberger Wolford

Ruth Umberger Wolford, 76, of Roanoke, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at her home after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Charles R. Doyle officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Born Oct. 3, 1922, in Wytheville, she was a daughter of the late Robert Boyd Umberger Sr. and the late Mary Sharpe Umberger.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, George W. "Red" Wolford; two brothers, Robert Umberger Jr. and Cecil Umberger; and two sisters, Ethel Cline and Mattie Wohlford.

Survivors include four sons, Donald B. Wolford of Goldsboro, N.C., Gary W. Wolford of Moneta, James R. Wolford of Roanoke, and Larry D. Wolford of Harrisonburg; six grandchildren, Dean, Mark, Greg, Carman, Matthew, and Erin; five great-grandchildren, Bryan, Brittany, Zachary, Elise, and Whitney; six sisters, Norma Wills of Columbus, Ohio, Edna Kegley, Helen Kegley, Louise Irvin and Audrey Simmerman, all of Wytheville, and Jettie Porter of Max Meadows; and one sister-in-law, Ruby Farmer of Roanoke.

Alfred William Atwell

Alfred William Atwell, 68, of Groseclose, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Stuart officiating. Interment followed in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

He was born on June 29, 1930, in Smyth County, a son of the late Truby W. and Bertha Gullion Atwell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was an employee of Virginia House Furniture of Atkins for 32 years as a lumberyard supervisor.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Estel Atwell.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Peggy Stanberry Atwell of Groseclose; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Janie Atwell of Groseclose; a grandson, Jason W. Atwell of Groseclose; two brothers and sister-in-law, Walter W. and Doris Atwell of Groseclose, and R.C. Atwell of Hillsville; four sisters and brother-in-law, Ethel Childress, Evelyn Smith and Ruby Cox, all of Crockett, and Gladys and Jimmy Johnson of Rural Retreat; and several nieces and nephews.
