Lena Settle Belcher

Lena Settle Belcher, 90, of Bland died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, at Kegley Manor Nursing Home in Bastian.

Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m. at the Shiloh cemetery, Hollybrook, with the Rev. Frank Clifton officiating.

She was born Dec. 24, 1907, at Davey, W.Va., a daughter of the late Joseph Sanford and Rosa Annabelle Shockey Settle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dayton Belcher; and a stepdaughter, Doris Hall.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Rex Morehead of Bland; one brother, Dayton Settle of Bramwell, W.Va.; three sisters, Mabel Mabe of Princeton, W.Va., Treecie Taylor of Bluewell, W.Va., and Angie Quensenbury of Coaldale, W.Va.; three grandchildren and spouse, Danny and Heather Morehead of Bland, Dayton Morehead of Bland, and Meagan Morehead of Bland; and two great-grandchildren, Morgan Morehead and Mason Morehead, both of Bland.

A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate was in charge of the arrangements.

Terry Lee Carey

Terry Lee Carey, 48, of Roanoke, formerly of Ivanhoe, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Manis officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cabble Carey.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Carey of Florida; a son, Terry Jeffries of Georgia; his mother, Mae Jones Carey of Ivanhoe; two sisters, Alice Mills of Ivanhoe and Darkes Anderson of Danville; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, George Elwood and Judy Carey, Larry Wayne Carey, and Robert and Bernice Carey, all of Roanoke.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville is in charge of the arrangements.

Daniel Lee Chumbley Sr.

Daniel Lee Chumbley Sr., 46, of Wheat Ridge, Colo., formerly of Christiansburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 9 a.m. at Crown Hill Funeral Chapel in Denver, Colo.

He was born April 14, 1952. He owned the Silver Spur Saddle Shop in Wheat Ridge, Colo., and was a past captain of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Mounted Posse.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Virginia Chumbley; and a brother, Thomas Chumbley.

Survivors include six children, Kimberley Chumbley Aker of Wytheville, Daniel Lee Chumbley Jr. of Max Meadows, Mathew Merle Chumbley of Wytheville, Chondra Chumbley Stewart of Meadowview, John Collier "J.C." Chumbley of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Latholah Santea Chumbley of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; two brothers, John P. Chumbley of Lakewood, Colo., and Joseph D. Chumbley of Christiansburg; two sisters, Frances L. Hughes of Christiansburg and Ruth Duncan of Christiansburg; and six grandchildren.

Crown Hill Funeral Chapel in Denver, Colo., is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard Giles Lephew

Richard Giles Lephew, 71, of Austinville, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, in the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Lephew cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late John L. and Beulah Manley Lephew. He was retired from the New Jersey Zinc Company.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Becky Edsel; and three brothers, Draper Lephew, Howard Lephew and Tom Lephew.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Pauline Lephew of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dickie and Joann Lephew of Wytheville, Tommy and Patty Lephew of Wytheville, and John and Shirley Lephew of Galax; five grandchildren, Michael Lephew, Chris Lephew, Shanna Lephew, Jeffrey Lephew, and Amy Lephew; a great-grandchild, Adrienne Ellerbee; two sisters, Lula Kosa of Wytheville, and Martha "Jack" Monton of Austinville; and a brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Roberta Lephew of Austinville.

Earnest Clyde Shinault

Earnest Clyde Shinault, 70, of Ivanhoe, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A memorial service was held Friday, Oct. 16, at 8:30 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home conducted by IVA Lodge 173 I.O.O.F. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Jubilee Baptist Church with Pastor Donald Keller and Russell Catron officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery. American Legion Post 9 will conduct graveside military rites.

He was a member of the Jubilee Baptist Church where he served as chairman of "Patriotic Sunday." He was a U.S. Navy and Army veteran of World War II and Korea; a member of IVA Lodge 173, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; charter member and chairman of the Board of the Ivanhoe Civic League; former Scout Master; helped reorganize the Ivanhoe Fire Department; a member of the Ivanhoe Bridle Club; and past P.T.A. president. He was the owner/operator of Shinault's Grocery in Austinville for many years.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Earnest Shinault; two stepfathers, Cecil Viars and Walter McRoberts; and one brother, Joe Shinault.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Diana C. Shinault of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Randall Dunford of Rural Retreat, and Renee and Deron Porter of Max Meadows; four sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Debbie Shinault of Ivanhoe, Kevin and Kara Shinault of Pilot Mountain, N.C., David and Jewell Shinault of Williamston, S.C., and Richard and Dawn Shinault of Pelzer, S.C.; his mother, Nellie McRoberts of Ivanhoe; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Olen and Geraldine Shinault of Route 3, Wytheville, and Helen Shinault of Wytheville; two aunts, Ellen Shinault of Wytheville and Shirley Dunford of Ivanhoe; eight grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and close relatives.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Jubilee Baptist Church, in care of Diana Shinault, P.O. Box 438, Max Meadows, VA 24360.

James P. Williams

James P. Williams, 79, of Wytheville, formerly of Cripple Creek, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Martti Saarinen. Interment will follow in the Rosenbaum Chapel cemetery.

He was a son of the late Fletcher and Willie Eversole Williams.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Johnson Williams.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Alfred Rosenbaum Sr. of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, James R. "Reggie" and Vickie Williams of Crockett; stepdaughters and spouses, Opal Snow Mills of Crockett, Shirley and Troy Springer of Crockett, and Brenda and Charles Parrish of Hopewell; a stepson and spouse, George K. and Jeanne Snow of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Earnest Nuckols of Wytheville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert "Bob" and Vernie Williams of Cripple Creek, and Trent "Tom" and Barbara Williams of Geneva, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Brittany Williams, Alfred Rosenbaum Jr., and Tyrone Rosenbaum; six step-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home or at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Alfred Rosenbaum Sr.. at any time.

Mary Houseman Cooper

Mary Houseman Cooper, 89, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Milligan, the Rev. Robert Smith and the Rev. Ann Blair officiating. Interment was in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat. The Wytheville Rebekah Lodge 57 conducted a memorial service Thursday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel.

She was the daughter of the late Charles O. and Sarah Hilton Houseman and was a member of the West End United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie T. Cooper.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Andrew J. and Clara C. Houseman of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the West End United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Charles R. Hall

Charles R. Hall, 94, of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1:30 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorials Gardens in Rural Retreat.

He was born in Grayson County, the son of the late Steve and Mary Hackler Hall. He was a retired employee of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem and attended the Fulton United Methodist Church in Groseclose.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Fulton Hall; one daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Robert Bradley of Anapolis, Md.; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Lois Hall of Huddleston; four grandchildren, Barney Hall, Penny Bare, Debra St. Clair, and Willard Hall; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Fulton United Methodist Church.

Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat is in charge of the arrangements.

Mayme Lambert Harden

Mayme Lambert Harden, 83, of Meadowview, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998, at the Russell County Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. in the Newberry Funeral Home, Bland, with the Rev. Will Shewey officiating. Burial followed in the Red Oak cemetery.

She was born in Bland County and had lived in Bland and Tazewell counties until she moved to Washington County in 1980. She attended Greenfield Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred B. Harden.

Survivors include two daughters, Sadie Surber of Abingdon, and Charlotte Riggle of Meadowview; two brothers, Clair Lambert, and Frazier Lambert, both of Bland; three sisters, Pearl Lambert, Lloyd Lambert and Ethel Lambert, all of Bland; four grandchildren, Sgt. Robert Riggle, Jamie Surber, Molly Surber and Matthew Surber; three great-grandchildren, Amanda Riggle, Sammie Riggle and Joshua Riggle; and a granddaughter-in-law, Maggie Riggle.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 5001 W. Broad St., Richmond, VA 23230.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon and Newberry Funeral Home in Bland were in charge of the arrangements.

Edwin Dalton Hoback

Edwin Dalton "Shorty" Hoback, 68, of Roanoke County, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 2, at 2:30 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel with Pastor Mark Graham and Bishop Richard Banserner officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

He was a native of Wythe County and was a son of the late Charlie Oscar and Elvira Spraker Hoback. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post 248 and was retired from General Electric with 28 years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Geneva M. "Polly" Hoback; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Tom Eddy of Marion; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Michelle Hoback of Dublin, Steve and Charla Hoback of Roanoke, and Mike and Judy Hoback of Glade Spring; eight grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Betty Hoback of Wytheville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Peggy Cline of Wytheville, and Becky and Cecil Corvin of Savannah, Ga.; two aunts, and several nieces and nephews.

Those who wish may send flowers or make donations to Carilion Hospice.

Oakey's South Chapel in Roanoke is in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond A. Miller

Raymond A. Miller, 75, of Elk Creek, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. in the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence, with the Rev. Bobby Lorton and the Rev. Lonnie Fields officiating. Interment was in Forest cemetery, Elk Creek. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Grayson County VFW Post 7726.

Born April 5, 1923 at Elk Creek, he was the son of the late Freel and Lettie Ann Holbrook Miller. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired inspector with the Virginia Department of Agriculture with 33 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Gaye Roberts Miller of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley Hale of Speedwell and Betty and Larry Smith of King, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Sue Miller of Elk Creek; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Frances and Jim Boyer of Independence, and Hazel Umberger of Wytheville; and three grandchildren, Roxanne Smith and Anthony Smith, both of King, N.C., and Gregory Hale of Speedwell.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Elk Creek Rescue Squad or Elk Creek Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Elk Creek, VA 24326.

Vergie Callahan Smith

Vergie Callahan Smith, 76, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Johnson and the Rev. Jeff Callahan officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Fielden and Mattie Cassell Callahan.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include one daughter, Mattie Belle Walters of Rural Retreat; three sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew L. and Debbie Smith of Roanoke, Steven D. and Donna Smith of Wytheville, and F.M. Smith of Dobson, N.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Bertie C. and Bob Fisher of Wytheville; a brother and sister-in-law, J.C. and Margaret Callahan of Wytheville; seven grandchildren, Virginia Ann Smith, Will Smith, Jason Smith, Faith Smith, Asia Smith, Gray Walters and Jesse Neil Walters; and several nieces and nephews.
