Nellie Flora Peaks Rogers

Nellie Flora Peaks Rogers, 81, of Mosley, formerly of Austinville, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville. Interment will follow in the Fink cemetery in Locust Hill.

She was born in Virginia, the daughter of the late Floyd and Julia Taylor Peaks.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Howard Rogers.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen V. Robertson of Baltimore, Md., and Adeen Sisk of Austinville; a son, James Rogers of Mosley; a brother, Robert Peaks; a close companion, Bernice Sloan; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home.

Zella Zoe Gentry

Zella Zoe Gentry, 83, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Asbury Center at Birdmont in Wytheville.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Charles C. Burnett officiating. Interment will follow in the Independence cemetery, Independence.

She was born Dec. 15, 1915, in Grayson County, a daughter of the late John L. and Ella Copenhaver Gentry. She taught school for 41 years in Grayson County, Tazewell County, Wythe County and Alexandria City. She was a charter member of Chi Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational sorority. She was interested in the musical program of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she had been a member for many years. She had purchased several octaves of hand bells and had just recently given a memorial gift to build a music room in the church. She was a member of the Wilderness Road Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a former member of the Mayflower Society.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Euna Faye Campbell, Thelma Crotts, Evah Ward, and Vere Findlay; and her brother, Max Gentry.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Jesse Gentry of Independence; a very dear friend, Dorothy Ward of Independence; nephews and nieces, J. Colin Campbell of Independence, John Ward of Wytheville, Bill Ward of Vancouver, Wash., Robert Gentry of Kernersville, N.C., Judy Duke of Charlotte, N.C., Jane Campbell of Columbia, Md., Linda Boyer of Independence, and Ty Roop of Wytheville; 20 great-nephews and great-nieces, and seven great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 20, from 1 p.m. until service time at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel.

Memorial gifts may be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Independence cemetery Fund.

Kyle Avis Smith Moore

Kyle Avis Smith Moore, 77, of Wytheville, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, following a long illness.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 12:30 p.m. at the Wytheville Baptist Church with Dr. Barry W. Losey officiating.

She was born Dec. 9, 1921, the youngest of nine children born to the late Clark and Gillie Esterline Hepler Smith of Logan, W.Va. After the death of her father, she and a sister were reared at the Odd Fellow's Children's Home in Elkins, W.Va. She graduated from Elkins High School in 1941 and graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in English in 1945. She began her high school teaching career in Northfork, W.Va., where met and married Tom Moore. She was organist for the Northfork Baptist Church, prominent in Beta Sigma Phi and the Keystone-Northfork Junior Woman's Club, and was active in other local happenings. She and her husband had resided in Northfork, W.Va., and Lebanon, Va., where she played the organ at the Baptist church; Bluefield, W.Va.; and settled in Wytheville in 1963.

She taught at Fort Chiswell High School, retiring from there in 1986. She taught English and public speaking and was the sponsor and coach for the drama club. She attended Wytheville Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir, played the piano for the children's Sunday school department, and took an active role in the Barbara Deal Circle and other church functions. She tutored adults in reading through the One-On-One Literacy Program in her home and at the church building. She and her husband were instrumental in starting the Claytor Lake Ski Club. Photos of them were used in the Claytor 50th Anniversary display this past summer at the lake headquarters. She won award ribbons during the Wytheville Chautauqua festivals with her needlework projects.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Thomas Markham Moore of Wytheville; a sister, Margaret Eloise Smith of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Margaret Alice Moore Stack of Cedarville, Ohio; a son-in-law, Pressley S.L. "Buddy" Stack of Cedarville, Ohio; and a granddaughter, Madelon Virginia "Ginny" Stack of Cedarville, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the One-On-One Literacy Program, c/o Wythe-Grayson Regional Library, 300 East Monroe Street, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Bennett Wayne Simmons

Bennett Wayne Simmons, 59, of Bland, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with Pastor Charles A. Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Morning Star cemetery, Bland.

He was born May 17, 1939, in Roanoke, a son of the late Samuel Jabe and Ruby Lee Gordon Simmons. He was retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant, Power House #1, and was self-employed with B.W. Simmons Vault Company. He was a member of the Hollybrook Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Vernie Clemons Simmons; six sons and daughter-in-law, Joseph Simmons, David and Pat Simmons, Samuel Simmons, John Simmons, Travis Simmons, and Mitchell Simmons, all of Bland; three daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and John Johnson, Sharon and Mike Foglesong, and Deborah and Keith Dinger, all of Bland; one brother, Charles Simmons of Pearisburg; 14 grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home.

Carl A. Smith Sr.

Carl A. Smith Sr., 77, of Pulaski, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center, Roanoke, after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski, with the Rev. David Coffey officiating. Burial followed at the Oakwood cemetery.

He was born May 31, 1921, in Augusta County. He was a son of the late Dorsey and Lucinda Craun Smith. He held the rank of master sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a decorated combat veteran of World War II, who fought in the jungles of Luzon and the Philippine Islands as a member of the 129th Infantry Division. He was awarded the Presidential Citation from the Republic of the Philippines in honor of the Philippine Liberation Campaign, 1944-1945. He also was awarded the Bronze Star for valor. After World War II, he joined the Virginia National Guard, where he served for 32 years. He was a management specialist in Contract Administration for the Department of the Army, Radford Arsenal. He retired after 36 years of service. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski, for 58 years. He served as deacon, member of the session, and Sunday school superintendent. He was a co-founder of Boy Scout Troop #249 at First Presbyterian Church in 1947. He served many years as Cub Scout Master of Pack 248. He was also awarded Life Membership in Elks Lodge No. 1067, Pulaski.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Claude Smith (his twin brother), Marvin Smith and Dorsey Smith Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Gregory Smith of Pulaski; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl A. Jr. and Sharon D. Smith of Richmond, Jerry G. and Betsy W. Smith of Marietta, Ga., and William J. and Farron W. Smith of Wytheville; a brother, Fred Lee Smith of Staunton; three sisters, Bertie Deaver, Esther Midkiff, and Lucille Smith, all of Staunton; and eight grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski, the National Parkinson's Foundation or the charity of your choice.

Merlie Irene Shupe Sult

Merlie Irene Shupe Sult, 79, of Route 1, Wytheville, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Amy Oehlschlaeger officiating. Interment will be held later in the West End cemetery.

She was a retired merchant where she was in a family business with her now deceased husband, Leon M. Sult, for 38 years. She was a member of the Holy Advent Lutheran Church.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Emily Hall of Wytheville; and two grandchildren, Jamie Hall of Lynchburg, and Derek Hall of Wytheville.

Buford Charlie Bratton

Buford Charlie Bratton, 91, of Dublin, Va., died Friday, May 23, 2003, in the Highland Ridge Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 25, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Boyd officiating. Interment will follow in the Duncan cemetery in Draper, Va.

He was born in Wythe County March 1, 1912.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Luvina "Lou" Reynolds Bratton; two daughters, Betty Martin and Nancy Dunford; son-in-law, Charles Taylor; parents, James and Minnie Sue Roope Bratton; and several sisters and brothers.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Gene and Elizabeth Bratton, Dublin, Va.; three daughters, Linda Bratton, Draper, Va., Shirley Ann Taylor, and Rita Sue Coleman, both of Pulaski, Va.; five sisters, Virginia DeHart, Martha Eads, Bonnie Wiseman, Stella Wright, all of Pulaski, Va., and Colleen Lucian, Dublin, Va.; three brothers, Brown Bratton, Robbie Bratton, both of Radford, Va., and Junior Bratton, Staunton, Va.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Nannie Elizabeth Lineberry Hoback

Nannie Elizabeth Lineberry Hoback, 85, of Speedwell, Va., died Friday May 23, 2003, Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral service will be held Monday, May 26, at 2 p.m. in the Speedwell United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Bill Perkins. Interment will be in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery. The body will taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Hoback; her parents, Wiley and Sarah Kane Lineberry; sister, Goldie Frances Lineberry; and brother, Peter Marshall Lineberry.

Survivors include four daughters and a son-in-law, Sarah Agnes Hoback, Mary Nancy Hoback, Edna Elizabeth Hoback, and Barbara Ann Hoback and Roy Hale, all of Speedwell, Va.; five sons, Everett Hasten Hoback, Walter Marshall Hoback, Thomas Chitwood Hoback, Robert Herbert Hoback, and Randy Junior Hoback, all of Speedwell, Va.; three sisters, Martha Tate, Mary Lineberry, both of Wytheville, Va., and Edna Fifer of Bedford, Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert H. "Bob" and Carrie Lineberry of Rural Retreat, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends Sunday, May 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Grubb Funeral Home.

Roxie Elizabeth Cox

Roxie Elizabeth Cox, 84, of Pulaski, Va., died Friday, May 30, 2003. A memorial service was held Sunday, June 1, at 8 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski, Va., with the Rev. Johnny Howlett officiating. Burial was held Monday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Christian Church cemetery, Draper, Va.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy H. Davis; and two brothers.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Nadene Holliday of Charlottesville, Va., and Curtis and Judy Cox of Pulaski, Va.; two sisters, Virginia Warden of Wythe County, Va., and Sallie Damron of Allisonia, Va.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Memorial Christian Church, Draper, Va.

Willard Douglas Burnette

Willard Douglas Burnette, 84, of Bastian, Va., died Friday, June 6, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be private.

He was born in Kinsley, Kan., and was of the Baptist faith. He was a purchaser of produce for the Burnette Cannery and was a farmer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Burnette; and his parents, John Newton and Ellen Richard Burnette.

Survivors include special friends, Nancy and Russell Pennington of Bastian, Va.; and several nieces, nephews and other friends.

Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel in Bland, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.
