George E. Hamilton Jr. dies at 87
Mar 27, 2003
As a new high school graduate, George E. Hamilton Jr. resisted his family urgings to go to college, opting instead for a $15 a week position unloading meat trucks for Swift & Co. in Richmond.
He would spend the next 59 years in the meatpacking industry, retiring in 1994 as president and chief operating officer of Smithfield Packing Co.
"He was just happy to have a job in 1935 and it later evolved into something he loved," said his son, George E. Hamilton III of Glenwood, Md. "He was proud of the accomplishment of starting at the bottom and working all the way to the top."
Mr. Hamilton, who stepped down from the parent company's board of directors last year, died Tuesday in Smithfield at age 87.
President of the Smithfield Foods subsidiary from 1970 to 1994, he once told the Virginian-Pilot newspaper that the job was "the culmination of any man's dream."
Before joining Smithfield Packing as president in 1970, Mr. Hamilton spent a decade as vice president of sales for Gwaltney Inc. Gwaltney was later acquired by Smithfield Foods.
In 1978, Smithfield began marketing the Hamilton EZ Karv Ham, a product which was named after him.
"Much of today's success of Smithfield Packing is traceable to the deeds of George Hamilton," said Smithfield Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joseph W. Luter III. "As president of the company, he was a visionary leader. As a director of Smithfield Foods, he was an insightful adviser.
"More importantly, he was a man of extraordinary integrity and sincerity who was admired by all who knew him."
His son said Mr. Hamilton carried with him into his career as an executive the work ethic he developed working long hours unloading trucks. The World War II Army veteran was extremely curious and loved reading biographies of military leaders, from which he drew some of his inspiration.
"He didn't retire until he was almost 79 and was at his desk every morning at 6:30 a.m. He was extremely disciplined and focused," his son said. "He worked hard every day and he expected others to work hard, too."
In addition to his son, George, survivors include his wife, Nancy Miller Hamilton; his son, John Miller Hamilton, of Smithfield; three sisters, Cecelia Plummer, of Jupiter, Fla., Patricia Collins, of Oakton, and Sister Jane Cecelia Hamilton, of Nazareth, Ky.; two brothers, John E. Hamilton, of Towson, Md., and David W. Hamilton, of San Francisco; and a granddaughter.
A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Smithfield. Burial will take place in St. Luke's Memorial Park.
