New Market - Genet Marie Kuhns Orebaugh, 57, died on November 2, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Orebaugh was born on March 24, 1952 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and resided in Pennsylvania before moving to Virginia. She graduated from Eastern Mennonite College and worked at Perdue Farms in Bridgewater for many years. She was the daughter of the late James W. Kuhns and Olive M. Clemens Kuhns, who survives. She is survived by her husband, Robert B. “Tiny” Orebaugh, New Market, VA, two sisters, Jean E. (G. Edward) Rissler, Harrisonburg, VA, Evelyn M. (Jessie) Rankin, Middleboro, MA; one brother, Philip L. (Faith) Kuhns, Tallahassee, FL; six nephews, James Rissler, Atlanta, GA, Grant Rissler, Lancaster, PA, Matthew Rissler, Dubuque, IA, Anthony Kuhns, Stefan Kuhns both of Tallahassee, FL, Jonathan Rankin, Middleboro, MA; and two grandnephews, Andrew Rissler, Peter Rissler, both of Atlanta , GA. The family will receive friends at McMullen Funeral Home on Friday, November 20, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Pastors Todd Thomas and Don Guthrie will conduct a memorial service on Saturday, November 21, 2009, 3:00 p.m. at the Timberville Church of the Nazarene. The body will be cremated and the ashes interred at the Bethel Mennonite Church cemetery in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Virginia Mennonite Conference, 901 Parkwood Dr., Harrisonburg, VA 22802 or RMH Regional Cancer Center, 100 East Grace St, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Lowell E. Ulrich, 59
Date of Death: Sep 27, 2008
Dayton - Lowell Ulrich, 59, a resident of 314 Bank Church Road, Dayton died Saturday September 27, 2008 from injuries sustained in a tractor accident while working in the woods on his farm. Mr. Ulrich was born on September 12, 1949 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Richard D. and Elva I. Martin Ulrich. He worked for Zion Productions and on his farm raising poultry, sheep and cattle. He was a member of the Cornerstone Church of Broadway. He received his Masters of Divinity from Eastern Mennonite Seminary in 1973 and was an assistant pastor at the Woodland Mennonite Church in Basye, Virginia during most of the 1970’s. On August 19, 1972 he married the former Joyce Wenger who survives. Also surviving are numerous cousins and friends. Pastors Tim Martin, Jim Hess, and Rick Martin will conduct a memorial service, Friday, October 5, 2008, 10 a.m. at Weaver’s Mennonite Church. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Church c/o Missions Fund, 265 W. Pembrooke Road, Broadway, Va. 22815. McMullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lee E. Emswiler, 93
Date of Death: Nov 3, 2008
Harrisonburg - Lee E. Emswiler, 93, a resident of Sunnyside Retirement Community, died November 3, 2008 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Emswiler was born on July 2, 1915 in Linville, Virginia and was the son of the late Wheeler Oscar and Annie Leoda (Oda) Hosaflook Emswiler. He was a farmer all of his life and worked at the Stehli Silk Mill, two local hatcheries and at the Rockingham Poultry Shipping Department. He enjoyed spending time with his family and gardening. Mr. Emswiler was a lifetime member of the Linville United Methodist Church. On August 10, 1936, he married the former Reba Layman who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Rose and husband Lewis, Laurel, Maryland; Carol Wilson and husband Keith, Weyers Cave; one son, Larry Emswiler and wife, Roxanne, Harrisonburg; two foster daughters, Anna Black and Mary Hoover; three sisters, Lena Zirk, Harrisonburg; Florence Green, Harrisonburg; Myrtle Filler, Waynesboro; one brother, Robert Emswiler, Dayton; seven grandchildren, Kevin Rose, Leigh Ann Rose, Brandy Emswiler, Brandon Emswiler and wife, Ginger, Bryan Wilson, Meredith Wilson, and Sara Wilson. Mr. Emswiler was preceded in death by an infant son. Reverends Charlene Landes, Brian Posey and Paul O’Gorek will conduct a funeral service Thursday, November 6, 2008 at 2p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Linville cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:30p.m. until 8p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sunnyside Community Development Department, 600 University Blvd, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801 or to the Linville United Methodist Church, 5290 Jesse Bennett Way, Linville, Virginia 22834.

Harvey Allen Martin, 94

Bridgewater - Harvey Allen Martin, 94, a resident of 4076 Dry River Road, Bridgewater, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010. Mr. Martin was born on June 19, 1916 in Ohio and was the son of the late Daniel J. and Martha Martin. He was a farmer and member of the Pleasant View Old Order Mennonite Church. On February 15, 1939 he married the former Ruth Virginia Rohrer who preceded him in death September 2, 1997. Surviving are six children, Barbara Shank and husband Robert, Charles Martin and wife Rosa all of Bridgewater; Alice Knicely and husband Frank, Robert Martin and wife Carol, Reba Showalter and husband Dale, Mildred Rhodes and husband Cleo all of Dayton; a sister, Naomi Rhodes and husband Marvin of Kentucky, twenty four grandchildren and thirty two great-grandchildren Harvey Martin was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters, a grandson Scott Showalter and wife Phyllis, and two great granddaughters, Shayla and Christina Showalter. The ministers of the church will conduct a funeral service on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Pleasant View Old Order Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home until Friday morning at 10 a.m.

Lois Elaine Hisey, 59

Lois Elaine Hisey, 59 died November 5, 2010 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center where she had lived one week. She had been a resident at Maple Lawn Home in Staunton for the past 11 years. Miss Hisey was born on December 29, 1950 in the Spring Creek area of Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Frank Dewitt and Lenna Elizabeth Hilbert Hisey. She graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 1971. Miss Hisey worked as a store room clerk at H.D. Lee. She was a member of Greenmount Church of the Brethren, and in her early years was a member of the Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren. Surviving are a sister, Anna Lee Hisey Pierson and husband William; Plainfield, Illinois; a niece, Taylor Hisey Pierson; five aunts, Lessie Hilbert, Bridgewater; Audrey Alexander, Mt. Sidney; Naomi Leeth and husband Raymond, Grottoes; Alma Shifflett, Charlottesville; Della Hisey, Bridgewater and numerous cousins. Reverends Ken Dolan and Glenn Bollinger will conduct a funeral service on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Greenmount Church of the Brethren at 11a.m. A graveside service will be held at 2p.m. at the Beaver Creek cemetery, Bridgewater. The family will receive friends Monday evening from six until eight at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greenmount Church of the Brethren, 4881 Greenmount Road, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22802.

Roy H. Lahman, 87

Dayton - Henry Lahman, 87, died November 4, 2010 at his home. He had been in failing health. Mr. Lahman was born on March 18, 1923, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Epriam and Katie Blosser Lahman. Mr. Lahman spent his life in the Dayton community and enjoyed many different jobs, farmer, making cider, operating a harness shop, a grocery route and a taxi service for local people. He had also worked at Rockingham Poultry and Dunham-Bush. He was a member of Rawley Springs Mennonite Church. On March 14, 1946, he married Grace Elizabeth Heatwole. Survived by two daughters, Mary Grace Mallow and husband Larry, Harrisonburg; Nellie Sonifrank and husband Linden, Dayton; two sons, Dewitt Lahman and wife Bonnie, Broadway; Jonas Lahman and wife Grace, Weyers Cave; three sisters, Ruth Martin, Anna Martin, and Charlotte Martin all of Indiana; nine grandchildren, Cinde Rodes, Lois Martin, Rebecca Pletcher, Cecil Sonifrank, Dean Sonifrank, Patricia Beery, Grace Glenn, Kendall Lahman, and Sherman Lahman; fifteen great grandchildren. Eli Slabaugh, Paul Reed, Keith Crider and David Miller will conduct a funeral service Sunday, November 7, 2010 at Bank Mennonite Church at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The body will be taken to his home where friends may call at any time. And then be taken to Bank Mennonite Church where the family will receive friends Saturday from 2p.m. to 4p.m. and 6p.m. to 8p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Rawley Springs Mennonite Church, c/o Peter Hartzler, 2886 Slab Road, Dayton, Virginia 22821.

Vada B. Swartz, 87

Dayton - Vada Fern Bowman Swartz, 87, Dayton, died November 3, 2010 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Swartz was born on August 16, 1923, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Luther and Ottie Lahman Bowman. She was well known for her catering at Eastern Mennonite High School, the Virginia Conference Assembly, and many weddings and events for family and friends. She was an active member of the Weavers Mennonite Church where she had taught Sunday School, served as a youth sponsor with her husband Dwight and was active in the women’s sewing circle. Her gift of warm hospitality was a blessing to many. On June 19, 1945, she married Dwight F. Swartz who preceded her in death December 27, 2009. Surviving are three daughters, Ruth Ann Horst and husband, Reuben, Dayton; Sharon Kisamore and husband Dave, Harrisonburg; Mary Jane Heatwole and husband Conrad, Riner, Virginia; one son, Robert Swartz and wife Linda, Stuarts Draft; one daughter-in-law, Jeanie Swartz, Hudson, Colorado; eight grandchildren, three step grandchildren; two great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. Mrs. Swartz was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Swartz was also preceded in death by a daughter Glenda Sue Swartz who died December 28, 1981 and a son, William Carter Swartz who died December 30, 2004. Pastors Janet Blosser and Phil Kanagy will conduct a funeral service Saturday morning, November 6, 2010, at 11a.m. at the Weavers Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at the Weavers Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from six until eight at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Mennonite Missions, 901 Parkwood Drive, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22802 or to the Mennonite Central Committee/Global Families, P.O.Box 500, Akron, Pennsylvania 17501.

Theodore Myers (Ted) Hoover
Date of Death: Oct 24, 2010
Ted Hoover, 85, died peacefully at Willow Estates Retirement Home in Penn Laird on October 24, 2010. He was born February 17, 1925 and grew up in Singers Glen, Virginia. Those who know better might say he grew up in “Frog Hollow.” Following graduation from Mt. Clinton High School, Ted served in the armed forces and received training at the Newport News Shipyards. He spent his career as a machinist in Harrisonburg, but was best known through his service and commitment to Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church, where he was a Deacon and Elder, West Rockingham Ruritan Club, and Skyline Federation of the Blind. Ted is survived by his wife, Lois Neff Hoover (who resides at Willow Estates), son David (Columbus, Ohio), daughter Jackie Stephenson (Hot Springs, Virginia), and two grandchildren, David Stephenson (Carborro, North Carolina) and Erica Stephenson (Monterey, Virginia). Preceding him in death are his parents, Weldon and Shirley Hoover, his first wife and mother of his children, Nancy Cunningham Hoover, his sister, Maxine Silman and his brother Harry Lee (Peck) Hoover. A memorial service will be held at Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church on October 27, 2010 at 11 a.m. with Rev. George Evans officiating. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. at the Cooks Creek cemetery. The family will receive friends following the memorial service. Friends and family my call at the McMullen Funeral Home at anytime. The casket will be closed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Ted’s memory to the charity of your choice. They also would like to offer their gratitude to the staff of Willow Estates for the care they provided over the last six years, particularly during his final days.

R.O. Deavers, 62
Date of Death: Oct 20, 2010
Linville - R.O. Deavers, 62, Linville, went to be with the Lord on October 20, 2010 at the University of Virginia Hospital. Mr. Deavers was born on December 29, 1947 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Roy O. (Pokey) and Frances (Tidy) Ritchie Deavers. He graduated from Broadway High School where he played football. He attended Shenandoah University and graduated from Shepherd College and played football for both colleges. He began working part-time for Casco Ice in 1968 and full time employment in 1972. He continued to work there and was currently the Ready Ice Plant Manager. He was a member of the Life Church of Broadway. On September 28, 1974, he married the former Linda Cooper who survives. Also surviving are a son Beau Deavers, Linville; a daughter, Sarah Forster, and husband Mike, Harrisonburg; two grandchildren Levi and Naomi Forster; two sisters, Geraldine (Gerry) Eaton and husband Forest; Nadine Dove and husband Courtney; and one brother, E. G. (Pokey) Deavers all of Harrisonburg. He was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Lynn Deavers. Pastors Brian Gillispie and Greg Cooper will conduct a Celebration of Life Service, Sunday, October 24, 2010, at 3 p.m. at J. Frank Hillyard Middle School, Broadway, Virginia. Burial will be private. The casket will be closed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, P.O. Box 937, Verona, Va. 24482.

Herbert N. Snyder, 55

Herbert Neff Snyder, 55, a resident of Rawley Springs, died Wednesday, October 21, 2010. Mr. Snyder was born on January 10, 1955 and was the son of the late Joseph E. and Lucille Virginia Miller Snyder, Sr. He was employed by Casco Ice, Pilgrims Pride and most recently Ag Forte. Surviving are two brothers, Joseph E. Snyder, Jr. and wife Linda, Carl L. Snyder and wife Karen, a sister, Gail Virginia Kile and husband Larry all of Dayton; seven nieces and nephews, and six great nieces and nephews. Paul Reed will conduct a graveside service at Rawley Springs cemetery on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home. Timberville - Garry Michael Ijames, 66, a child of God has went home to be with Jesus, died October 20, 2010 at him home. He had been in failing health. Mr. Ijames was born on April 22, 1944 in Davis County, North Carolina and was the son of the late James and Hazel Colleen Carter Ijames. Surviving are two children, Angie Branson and Jeremy Hooke; two brothers, James Ijames, Timberville; Faye Siever, Timberville; and John Craig Ijames, Victoria, Virginia; two grandchildren and a special dog, Snuggles. Pastor Todd Thomas will conduct a graveside service Friday, October 22, 2010 at 3p.m. at the Mountain Grove cemetery. Friends may call at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg at any time. Fern C. Trissel, 95
Date of Death: Oct 10, 2010
Fern Chlora Trissel, 95, a resident of Crestwood at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Coummity, died Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Oak Lea Nursing Home where she has been for a short time. Ms. Trissel was born on November 28, 1914 near Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late John H. and Lillie Hess Trissel. She graduated from Dayton High School as valedictorian of her class in 1931, graduated from junior college at Eastern Mennonite College (now Eastern Mennonite University) and then received Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education from Madison College (now James Madison University.) She retired in 1978 after teaching for 44 years in Rockingham County. She taught elementary schools in the Criders and Elkton areas, Singers Glen and Pleasant Valley. She was a member of the local, state, regional, and national Retired Teachers Organizations. Ms. Trissel spent her entire life in the Harrisonburg area. In March 1981, she moved to Heritage Haven in the New Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community where she resided there for more than twenty four years. In 2005, she moved from Heritage Haven to Crestwood where she was currently residing. She was an active volunteer in the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. She was a member of Weavers Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years, and was active in helping to establish and maintain the church library. She was formerly a member of several ladies missionary groups. Ms. Trissel enjoyed traveling and traveled in most of the states, including Hawaii and Alaska. She also traveled to many foreign countries of South America, Asia, Europe and Africa. She is survived by one brother, D. Lloyd Trissel and wife Alice of Harrisonburg, six nephews, a number of great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. Ms. Trissel was preceded in death by a brother, J. Ward Trissel and three sisters, Gail, Iva, and Rose Trissel. Reverends Ben Burks and John Lehman will conduct a memorial service on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the Strite Auditorium at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends following the memorial service. Friends may also call at the McMullen Funeral Home at anytime. Memorial contributions may be made to the John H. and Lillie Trissel Fund, c/o Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, 1475 Virginia Avenue, Harrisonburg, Va. 22802.

Lloyd S. Horst, 97
Date of Death: Oct 7, 2010
Lloyd S. Horst, 97, of Dayton, died Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Bridgewater Home where he was a resident. Mr. Horst was born on August 16, 1913 and was the son of the late Reuben and Frances Sweigart Horst. He was ordained in the ministry in 1948 and became Bishop in 1957. He was a member of Bank Mennonite Church. On February 29, 1936 he married the former Alice Virginia Heatwole, who preceded him in death on January 5, 1997. Surviving are two daughters, Rachel Schrock and husband David of Dayton, Anna Miller and husband Gary of Middlebury, Indiana, four sons, James D. Horst and wife Loretta of Weyers Cave, Amos D. Horst and wife Leta of Harrisonburg, Enos H. Horst and wife Deborah of Brandywine, West Virginia, Reuben W. Horst and wife Ruth Ann of Dayton; a daughter in law, Martha Horst of Century, Florida, twenty two grandchildren, and thirty three great grandchildren. He was the last surviving of fourteen children. Mr. Horst was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph F. Horst, and a grandson, Sheldon Horst. The ministers of the church will conduct a funeral service on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bank Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday at the Bank Mennonite Church from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Bank Mennonite Church Missions, c/o of Charles Heatwole, 9 Richard Court, Bridgewater, Va. 22812. Arrangements are by McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg.
