Bridgewater - Mabel Elaine Whetzel, 76, Bridgewater died September 23, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for over a week. Mrs. Whetzel was born on February 21, 1933, in the Singers Glen area of Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Lewis and Gertrude Sheldon Fulk Stroop. She had worked in the past at F&J; Restaurant and at Rose’s Restaurant and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Harrisonburg Eagles Aerie # 4150 and the Rion Bowman VFW Post 632 Auxiliary. She was a member of the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Ray Burnell Whetzel. Surviving are two sons, Larry A. Whetzel, Bridgewater and Bobby J. Whetzel, Singers Glen; her fiancé, Lloyd Swecker, Bridgewater; three brothers, Clarence Stroop, Roy Stroop and Elwood Stroop all of Singers Glen; five sisters, Frances Hill, Harrisonburg; Shirley Keister, Manassas; Rachel Whetzel, New Market; Ruby Patterson, Harrisonburg; Donna Cubbage, Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Taylor and Hannah Whetzel Mrs. Whetzel was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Lane Whetzel and Ronnie Burnell Whetzel and four half brothers, Oliver Stroop, Paul Stroop, Harold Stroop, Howard Stroop and one half sister, Viola Ward. Rev. William Staton will conduct a funeral service Saturday at 2p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the Singers Glen cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from seven until eight at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clover Hill Rescue Squad, 2100 Clover Hill Road, Dayton, Virginia 22821. The casket will remain closed.

Ethel Mason Flook, 83

Harrisonburg - Ethel Mason Flook, 83, a resident of 2101 Flook Lane, Harrisonburg, died September 24, 2009 at her home. Mrs. Flook was born on January 13, 1926, the 10th of fifteen children to the late James Lester and Almira Blanche Cupp Mason in Sangerville, Virginia. She graduated from North River High School in 1944. She was a member of Fellowship United Methodist Church. She worked at Stehli Silk Mill, Celanese in Bridgewater and Keezletown Elementary School cafeteria. On May 16, 1953, she married William Charles Flook who preceded her in death April 1, 2005. She is survived by three daughters, Ellen Smith and husband Ray of Harrisonburg; Joyce Flook of Dayton and Donna Flook of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Tiffany Conley and husband Chad, Barry Smith and wife Annie, one great granddaughter, Kendall Conley and one step great granddaughter, Megan Conley; one sister, Jean Ruff and husband Galen, Besides her husband and parents she was preceded in death by two infant children, eight brothers and five sisters. Reverands Brian Posey and Wilma White will conduct a funeral service Sunday afternoon at 3p.m. at the Fellowship United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Fellowship Community cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from six until eight at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fellowship United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Karen Wheelbarger, 3166 Shen-Lake Drive, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801 or to the Rockingham Memorial Hospice, 235 Cantrell Avenue, Harrisonburg, Virginia, 22801.

Harman D. Moyers

Harman Daniel Moyers, 89, formerly of Singers Glen, Virginia, died Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at Evergreen Nursing Health and Rehab in Winchester, Virginia, where he had been a resident since 2006. Mr. Moyers was born on May 1, 1920 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Fred Preston and Tessie Walters Moyers. He spent all of his active life in Rockingham County. He enjoyed reading, farming, raising livestock, cutting wood and talking about family history. He also enjoyed running his 1947 John Deere Tractor and going to local lawn parties. He loved his pets dearly. He last attended Greenmount Church of the Brethren. Mr. Moyers is the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving is a niece, Diane K. Gambill of Winchester, Virginia; a brother-in-law, Kenton Gambill of Strasburg, Virginia; and numerous cousins and friends. Mr. Moyers was preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel Marie Moyers and Hazel Moyers Gambill. The Reverend Clarence Moyers will conduct a memorial service on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the memorial service on Sunday from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. The family will hold a private interment on Saturday. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Cats Cradle, 124 South Main Street, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801 or Harrisonburg/Rockingham SPCA, P.O. Box 413. Harrisonburg, VA 22803.

Kathern M. Eppard, 71

Harrisonburg - Kathern Mae Eppard, 71, a resident of 442 Peake Mountain Road, Harrisonburg died September 16, 2009 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mrs. Eppard was born on June 1, 1938 in Cass, West Virginia and was the daughter of the late Alonzo Franklin and Helen Arvetta Teter Taylor. She worked at Swift Company and Marvel Poultry in the past until her retirement. She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Baptist Church. Mrs. Eppard was preceded in death by her first husband Sterling McDorman and her second husband Robert D. Eppard. Surviving are two sons, John J. McDorman, Mt. Solon and Stanley Lee McDorman, Harrisonburg; one daughter Bonnie Sue Carr, Harrisonburg; a step daughter, Linda Corbin, Fulks Run; a step son, Dale Eppard, Harrisonburg; three brothers, Robert Taylor, Harrisonburg; Laronzo (Bill) Taylor, Maryland; Bub Taylor, New Creek, West Virginia; Hazel Kimble, Maryland; four grandchildren, Latosha Carr; Matraca Carr; Destiny McDorman and Kenneth Fink; one great granddaughter, Rebecca Everson. She was preceded in death by a grandson Kevin Lee McDorman. Reverends Mark Mays and Michael Fallin will conduct a funeral service Saturday morning at 11a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends Friday evening from seven until eight at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to family c/o McMullen Funeral Home, 5784 Greenmount Road, Harrisonburg to assist with the funeral services.

Emmer Monroe Frank, 89

Harrisonburg - Emmer Monroe Frank, 89, formerly of Singers Glen, died Wednesday, September 23, 2009 in Harrisonburg, VA. Emmer was born August 23, 1920 and lived his entire life on the family farm near Singers Glen, VA until moving to the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community a few years ago. He was predeceased by his parents James W.M. and Alice Brady Frank and five siblings Catherine Devers, Lucy Smith, James Newton Frank, Charles Frank and Dennis Frank. Emmer attended Singers Glen Elementary School and Linville Edom High School. He married Lillian Mills of Scottsville, Va on January 3, 1942. His job at People’s Chevrolet of Harrisonburg was interrupted by World War II. Emmer served in the Air Force from October 1942 through December 1945. He was promoted to corporal after airplane mechanic’s school. During his service he worked on B-17’s that trained crews headed to European Theater and then was stationed on Guam for six months servicing B-29’s. After the war, he continued working as a mechanic until becoming a rural letter carrier at the post office in Linville, VA in January 1953. Emmer retired December 31, 1993 with 41 years service. Through his years he was involved with the Singers Glen Ruritan Club, a former member of the Carl D. Lee Post 9872 and currently a member of the Myers-Hodges VFW Post 8644, American Legion and the Rural Letter Carriers Association. Emmer and Lillian are members of the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church. His family, church and community were central to his life. Family gatherings and the annual Frank reunion gave him joy. Emmer lived an independent life on his own terms. Emmer is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lillian and their four children, Elizabeth and Bill Sar, Roanoke; James and Sue Frank, Harrisonburg, John and Jane Frank, Roanoke and Lois and Don Bucher, Harrisonburg; 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Rev. Jim Radford will conduct a funeral service Saturday morning at 10:30a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the Singers Glen cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6p.m. until 7p.m. There will be a meal and the family will receive friends following the service at the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church social hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gideon’s International, 6501 Confederacy Drive, Penn Laird, VA 22846.

Kim M. Reed

Kim McKinley Reed, 42, Harrisonburg, died suddenly November 17, 2010 at home. Kim was born on May 29, 1968, and was the son of Retha Brown Reed and the late Benjamin “Jack” Reed. He graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 1986. Kim worked for Banta for 16 years, and he currently owned and operated K&S; Lawn Service. He was a former member of the Weyers Cave Volunteer Fire Department and an active member of the Valley Cruisers. He enjoyed watching his kids play sports and following Nascar and wrestling. On June 11, 1995, he married the former Sherry McWilliams who survives. Surviving in addition to his wife and mother, are two daughters, Sonja Kerr and husband John of Timberville; Casey Reed of Harrisonburg; one son, Justin Reed of Harrisonburg; one brother, James Reed of Harrisonburg; two half sisters, Rowena Miller and husband Harold and Jerry Erdman and husband Corwin all of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Jayden, Joseph and Kaleb Kerr all of Timberville; his father and mother-in-law, Buddy and Cathy McWilliams of Harrisonburg; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and special friends. Pastor Guy Hudson will conduct the service Monday morning, November 22, 2010 at 11a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Singers Glen cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:30p.m. until 9p.m. at the funeral home.

Lillian Frank

Lillian Mills Frank, 92, died Wednesday, November 17, 2010 in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Lillian was born October 26, 1918 in Antioch, VA, Fluvanna County, the ninth child of John Claborn Mills and Margaret Elizabeth (Lena) Mills of Antioch (Scottsville, VA). She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Emmer Monroe Frank and seven siblings; Bertha Rice, Emma Rice, Leonard Mills, Selma Ferguson, Robert Mills, Fannie Wenger, and Louise Dean. Lillian attended Antioch Elementary School and graduated from Fluvanna county High School in 1938 and attended Farmville State Teacher’s college. She worked as librarian and secretary at Linville-Edom School 1938 – 1939, where she met her future husband Emmer. Lillian then took a job at Sylvania Incorporated in Fredericksburg until her marriage. Lillian and Emmer were married in Staunton, VA on Jan 3, 1942 at the parsonage of St. Paul’s United Brethren Church by Emmer’s cousin Reverend David F. Glovier. They raised four children and lived throughout their married life following Emmer’s military service during WWII at the family farm near Singers Glen, VA. They moved to the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in September 2005. Lillian’s life revolved around family, friends, church and community. She had a compassion for others and ministered to the needs of her family and community. Throughout her life Lillian served others as a nurse’s aid at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and as part-time post master at Linville-Edom post office for many years. As a mother she imparted her skills in the kitchen, garden and farm life to her children and grandchildren. Though she spent much of her time at home, she also loved to travel and see new places including bus trips and a special trip to California and Hawaii with her sisters. Everyone was welcome in the Frank household including several foreign exchange visitors throughout the years. Lillian created opportunities for her children and encouraged their educational activities. She always enjoyed hearing about the lives of her family including all the nieces, nephews, cousins from both the Frank and Mills extended families. Memories were made at family meals with everyone enjoying her good food. As a wife, mother and great-grandmother she was a source of strength, comfort and love. Lillian and Emmer were faithful members of Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church, Singers Glen, VA. She lived her life as a good daughter, sister, wife and mother. She will be missed by all. Lillian is survived by her sister Dorothy Pope, children Elizabeth and Bill Sar, Roanoke, James and Sue Frank, Harrisonburg, John and Jane Frank, Roanoke, Lois and Don Bucher, Harrisonburg, 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements are handled by McMullen Funeral Home, 5784 Greenmount Road, Harrisonburg, VA. The family will receive visitors on Sunday Afternoon from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A service will be held at McMullen Funeral Home on Monday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. Jim Radford, and Rev. Paul Glovier. Interment will follow at Singers Glen cemetery. The casket will be closed. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Beatrice K. Lawson, 90

Beatrice Katherine Lawson, 90, a resident of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at her home. Mrs. Lawson was born on September 23, 1920 in Mt. Crawford and was the daughter of the late John Ashby and Cornelia Florence Morris Anderson. She was a homemaker, a life long member of the Melrose community, and known as “Grandma Beatie” to her friends and family. She was a member of the Fellowship United Methodist Church. On July 17, 1940, she married Steward “Sonny” Lawson who preceded her in death on March 19, 1993. Surviving are three children, Wanda L. Reed and husband Jim of Louisa, Buddy A. Lawson and wife Debbie, of Sterling, Tommy L. Lawson and wife Betty of Madison; three sisters, Lulu Heatwole of Harrisonburg, Dorothy Fulk of Keezletown, Juanita Sheffer of Penn Laird; twelve grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Mrs. Lawson was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna J. Totherow, a sister, Virginia Anderson and a brother, Nelson Anderson. Reverend David Burrough will conduct a graveside service on Saturday afternoon, at 2:00 p.m. at the Fellowship Community cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6 until 7 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Joyce Eunice Cooper, 69

Dayton - Joyce Eunice Cooper, 69, a resident of 301 Clover Hill Road, Dayton, died November 14, 2010 at her home. Mrs. Cooper was born on October 29, 1941, in Rockingham Count and was the daughter of the late William Edgar and Mary Virginia Ritchie Myers. She worked for the Pilgrims Pride Hinton plant for many years and currently was employed at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. She was an avid bingo player. She was a member of the Mt. Bethel Church of the Brethren and had attended Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church. She was married twice, to Earl M. Long who preceded her in death in 1971 and to Jack Cooper who preceded her in 1991. Surviving are three sons, Earl M. Long; Teddy W. Long and fiancé Tammy Warner; Weddie L. Long, and wife Jennifer; all of Dayton; five step children, Jackie Cooper, Don Cooper, Tom Cooper, Janie Cooper and Joy Vandevander; one sister, Carolyn Rosenson, Richmond; one granddaughter, Shannon Long and one great granddaughter, Rebekah Morris; five step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren; a companion, Gary Sheffer and a special friend, Naomi Mitchell both of Sugar Grove, West Virginia. Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Fred, William and John Myers. Wendell “Sonny” Henkel will conduct a funeral Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at 2 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Horeb cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from six until eight at the funeral home. Malcolm E. Goditt, 70

Malcolm Earnest Goditt, 70, a resident of Harrisonburg, died Thursday, November 11, 2010 at his home. Mr. Goditt was born on July 7, 1940 in Attleboro, Massachusetts and was the son of the late John H. and Ethel Russell Goditt. He was employed as a security guard for Central Security Service. He was a member of Hose Company No. 4 and Harrisonburg Company No. 1. On July 11, 1970, he married the former Eva G. Henton who survives. Also surviving is four children, John Goditt and wife Lisa, Lester Goditt, Kimberly Sullivan and husband Brian, Krista Lantz and husband David; a sister, Beverly Bienvenue thirteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Jimmy Kite will conduct a graveside service on Sunday Afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Fellowship Community cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home, 2752 Harpine Highway, Harrisonburg, at anytime, or at the McMullen Funeral Home.

Lois Ann McClung, 68

Lois Ann McClung, 68, a resident of 163 B. South Avenue, Harrisonburg, died Thursday, September 17, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. McClung was born on December 1, 1940 in Harrisonburg and was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Jesse Louise Eppard Sampson. She owned and operated Golden Eagle Pawn Shop and was a former member of the Eagles Aerie #4150 Women’s Auxiliary. On March 11, 1963, she married Karl McClung who preceded her in death on April 17, 1980. Surviving are three daughters, Angela McClung and Stephanie McClung and Heather Lundy all of Harrisonburg; two sons, Jeffery McClung of Petersburg, Va and David Abbott of Harrisonburg.; two brothers, Eugene Sampson and Richard Sampson and one sister, Barbara See all of Harrisonburg; and a half brother, Warren Lee Sampson, of Grottoes. Mrs. McClung was preceded in death by a sister Patricia Sampson. Pastor Ken Dolan will conduct a funeral service on Monday morning, September 21, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Linville cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 7 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1477, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801.

Edward (Ward) F. Leyh IV

Harrisonburg - Edward (Ward) F. Leyth IV, 68, died Monday May 10, 2010 at his home. Ward was born on April 1, 1942, in Baltimore Maryland and was the son of the late Edward F. and Frances Carson Leyh III. Ward had lived in Singers Glen as a younger man and moved to Pleasant View Inc.’s Lee High Residence in 1988. Most recently he had lived in his own apartment within PV, Inc.’s Community Support Services program of which he was very proud. Ward was an original member of the Linville-Edom Workshop which later became Friendship Industries. Ward worked at Hardee’s in Harrisonburg for 11 years. He was active in Special Olympics and participated in track, basketball, volleyball, swimming and bowling and earned many medals over the years. He was also active in the community and volunteered at Mill Creek Church and helped with Meals on Wheels. Ward also was a member of Pleasant View’s choir for many years and enjoyed all the activities he participated in. He has also been a past member of the Ruritans. He regularly attended Ridgeway Mennonite Church and counted many of the members as friends. Ward was a very social person; he enjoyed meeting new people and once stated he never met a stranger. He is survived by his aunt Genevieve Stout, Murphy, NC. A graveside service will be held Friday, May 14, 2010 at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens at 2:00p.m. A memorial service will be held at Ridgeway Mennonite Church Friday, at 3:00p.m. Friends may call at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg at any time. Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant View Inc. P.O. Box 426, Broadway, Virginia 22815.
