Harrisonburg - Olive Mae Clemens Kuhns, 86, died April 22, 2010 at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community where she was a resident. Mrs. Kuhns was born on June 15, 1923 in Souderton, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Raymond Sell and Esther Moyer Clemens. She graduated from the Grandview School of Nursing, RN, Goshen College, BA, and the University of Pennsylvania, MSN. She and her late husband served with the Mennonite Central Committee Relief Program in Ethiopia, 1949-1951. She taught in the Nursing program at Eastern Mennonite University from 1970 until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of Park View Mennonite Church. On August 27, 1949, she married James W. Kuhns who preceded her in death on March 31, 2009. Surviving are two daughters, Jean Elaine (G. Edward) Rissler, Harrisonburg, VA, Evelyn Mae (Jessie) Rankin, Middleboro, MA; one son, Philip Laurence (Faith) Kuhns, Tallahassee, FL; one brother, R. Wayne Clemens, Souderton, PA; six grandchildren, James Rissler, Atlanta, GA, Grant Rissler, Lancaster, PA, Matthew Rissler, Dubuque, IA, Anthony Kuhns, Stefan Kuhns both of Tallahassee, FL, Jonathan Rankin, Middleboro, MA; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew Rissler, Peter Rissler, both of Atlanta, GA. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Genet Marie (Robert) Orebaugh, a sister, Mildred L. Yoder, and a brother, Edgar M. Clemens. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Olive Kuhns will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Park View Mennonite Church, 1600 College Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA 22802. The body was cremated and the ashes will be interred at the Weavers Mennonite cemetery in a private service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, 1501 Virginia Ave, Harrisonburg, VA 22802, or to Mennonite Central Committee, 21 South 12th Street, PO Box 500, Akron, PA, 17501-0500.

Goldie A. Spitzer

Golide Arbutus Spitzer, 84, a resident of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at her home. Ms. Spitzer was born on January 23, 1926 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Homer and Blanche Dove. She was formerly employed at the K-Mart food court, and greatly loved and appreciated animals. She was a member of Word Ministries. In 1960, she married Garnette Spitzer who died in October of 2009. Surviving is a special niece, Sandy Obaugh, and special friend, Joyce Byrd; a sister in law, Violet Dove and a number of nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her family. Reverend Laney Knight and David Kite will conduct a funeral service on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Mt. Grove cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Howard W. Spitzer, 89

Harrisonburg - Howard Weakley Spitzer, 89, died April 5, 2009 at the home of his grandson where he had been residing, following a two month illness. Mr. Spitzer was born on February 19, 1920, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Ernest and Pamela Hoover Spitzer. He had been employed by Harrisonburg Motor Express and was a member of the First Assembly of God. His wife Virginia Spitzer preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons, Donnie Spitzer, Harrisonburg; Daryl Spitzer and wife Tammy, Harrisonburg; four daughters, Linda Hodge and husband Gary, Staunton; Sharon Root, Linville; Diane Lambert and husband Dennis, Harrisonburg; Debbie Brumfield, Harrisonburg; one sister, Oletha Lotts, Harrisonburg; one son-in-law, Gene Sly, Harrisonburg; a step-daughter, Jeanie Chu and husband Danny, Luray four granddaughters, nine grandsons, two step-grandsons, and many great grandchildren. And a special friend Mary Lee Heavner, Deer Run, W.Va. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelby Sly and one brother, Ralph Spitzer and a son-in-law, Donald Brumfield. Pastor Jeff Ferguson will conduct a funeral service Tuesday morning at 11a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens. McMullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Payne Jr. 84

Harrisonburg - Thomas Payne Jr., 84, a resident of 5894 Hopkins Gap Road, Fulks Run died April 23, 2010 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Payne was born on March 16, 1926, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Thomas and Lillie Smith Payne Sr. Mr. Payne spent his life in Rockingham County and served in the United States Army during World War II spending time in the Philippines. Mr. Payne worked as a truck driver and dispatcher for Rocco Feed for over 41 years retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Mount Clinton Church of God. On May 14, 1947, he married the former Velma Carr Payne who preceded him in death September 8, 2008. Surviving are one daughter, Sandra Kaye Garber and husband John of Dayton, one son Stanley Eugene Payne and wife Cheryl of Harrrisonburg. five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mr. Payne was the last surviving member of his family of four brothers and six sisters. Pastor Michael Fallin will conduct a funeral service Tuesday morning at 11a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Gospel Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends all day on Monday at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, 2203 Peake Mountain Road, Harrisonburg. Friends may also call at McMullen Funeral Home at any time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Clinton Church of God, 6454 Mt. Clinton Pike, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22802.

Violet “Sis” A. Losh, 66

Broadway - Violet “Sis” Alma Losh, 66 a resident of 192 East Lee Street, Broadway died March 24, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Ms. Losh was born on May 25, 1942 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late William and Annie Taylor Losh. Ms. Losh had worked at Friendship Industries and at the Op Shop in Harrisonburg. She was a member of the Spring Creek Nazarene Church. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, a special friend, Eric Chapman and her extended family at Pleasant View Home who had lovingly cared for her for many years. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul William Losh, Roy Taylor, Orville Losh, and Hilbert “Hill” Losh; two sisters, Dorothy Jean Wright and Ruby Jane Curry. Reverend Billy Curry will conduct a funeral service Friday morning at 11a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Briery Branch cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10a.m. until 11a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant View Home, Special needs of Lee High, 192 East Lee Street, Broadway, Virginia 22815.

James W. Kuhns, 84

Harrisonburg - James Winfred Kuhns, 84, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community where he was a resident. Mr. Kuhns was born on March 23, 1925 in LaJunta, Colorado, the son of the late Allen Winfred and Anna Inez Shupe Kuhns. He served with the Civilian Public Service (CPS) from July 1944 until August 1946, and with the Mennonite Central Committee Relief Program in Ethiopia, 1949-1951. He worked as a high school science teacher, guidance counselor and clinical psychologist. He taught in the School Psychology program at James Madison University from 1970 until his retirement as Professor Emeritus of Psychology. He was a member of Park View Mennonite Church. On August 27, 1949, he married the former Olive Mae Clemens who survives. Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Jean Elaine (Kuhns) Rissler, Harrisonburg, Genet Marie (Kuhns) Orebaugh, New Market, Eveyln Mae (Kuhns) Rankin, Middleboro, MA; one son, Philip Laurence Kuhns, Tallahassee, FL; two sisters, Lois Ardell (Kuhns) Ramsayer, Goshen, IN, Miriam Mae (Kuhns) Leichty, Berne, IN; six grandchildren, James Rissler, Atlanta, GA, Grant Rissler, Lancaster, PA, Matthew Rissler, Dubuque, IA, Anthony Kuhns, Stefan Kuhns both of Tallahassee, FL, Jonathan Rankin, Middleboro, MA; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew Rissler, Peter Rissler, both of Atlanta , GA. Reverend Shirlee K. Yoder will conduct a memorial service, Saturday, April 18, 2009, 3:00 p.m. at Park View Mennonite Church. The body was cremated. John David Zuidema

Harrisonburg - John David Zuidema was born to Dutch immigrant parents on December 18, 1920 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic, New Jersey. He was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 31, 2009. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Alice (Johnson) to whom he was united in matrimony on June 17, 1944. Also surviving him are three children, John D. Zuidema, Jr. (Jack) and wife Faye of Alachua, Florida, James J. Zuidema (Jim) and wife Nancy of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Margaret A. deLeeuwerk (Meg) and husband Alan of Port Republic, Virginia; nine grandchildren, Timothy Zuidema and wife Cecily of McIntosh, Florida, William Zuidema (Billy) and wife Teresa of Sumter, South Carolina, and Jamie Zuidema and wife Jamie of Waterloo, Indiana, Jessica (Zuidema) Perkins and husband Stuart, Joshua Zuidema and Jason Zuidema, all of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jacob deLeeuwerk and wife Jessica of Greer, South Carolina, Sarah (deLeeuwerk) Kasperek and husband Amos of Taylors, South Carolina and Benjamin deLeeuwerk, of Port Republic, Virginia; and eight great-grandchildren in Florida, Virginia, South Carolina, and Indiana. Mr. Zuidema resided in New Jersey from the time of his birth until moving to Bradenton, Florida in 1978. He then relocated to Port Republic Virginia (1993) and later to Harrisonburg, Virginia (2003). He received his high school diploma from Eastern Christian Academy in Paterson, New Jersey. During WWII he served in the United States Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged as a Corporal on March 15, 1944. He resumed his business career in partnership with his three older brothers in a trucking company that delivered trailer loads of groceries to Acme super markets in the New York metropolitan area. He left that business in 1959 to drive tanker trailers delivering sulfuric acid for Dixon Chemical Company in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He sold printing ink for Herrick, Inc. Company in Newark, New Jersey and later printing services for Anderson Press in Hawthorne, New Jersey. He started a contracting business that located and supplied high quality sub-base soil for use in the construction of Interstate Highways in the New York Metropolitan area. As a self taught Bible Scholar, from the late 1950’s onward, Mr. Zuidema was a sought-after lay gospel preacher and teacher. In 1973, he accepted a call to be the pastor of Faith Gospel Church in Clifton, New Jersey, where he served until 1978. In 1979, he moved to Bradenton, Florida to supervise the construction of a retirement community for retiring gospel missionaries. Upon the completion of this project, he continued to reside in Florida until moving to Port Republic, Virginia and then to Harrisonburg where he resided until his passing. Mr. Zuidema will be interred with military honors at the Virginia Veterans cemetery at Amelia, Virginia. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 2p.m. at the Peoples Baptist Church, 3526 Spotswood Trail, Penn Laird, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Central and Western Virginia Chapters, 250 E. Market Street, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801 or The Gideons International, P.O. Box 144, Timberville, Virginia 22834.

Susannah R. Bixler
Date of Death: Mar 26, 2009
Harrisonburg - Susannah Rose Bixler, infant, died Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Winchester Medical Center. Susannah was born on March 20, 2009 in Harrisonburg and was the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Gehman Bixler of Harrisonburg. Surviving in addition to her parents are one brother, Calvin Lowell Bixler; grandparents, Lee and Mary Bixler, York Springs, Pennsylvania, David and Lois Gehman, Parkesburg, Pennsylvania; great grandparents, Anna Martin, Manheim Pennsylvania, and John and Esther Wolgemuth, Lancaster Pennsylvania. Pastor Clyde Kratz will conduct a Worship Service, Sunday, March 29, 2009, at 6:00 p.m. at Zion Mennonite Church. A time of fellowship will follow the service.

Ana Luciano-Rodriguez, 86

Harrisonburg - Ana Luciano-Rodriguez, 86, died May 1, 2009 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Luciano-Rodriquez was born on January 18, 1923, in Penuelas, Puerto Rico and was the daughter of the late Leonardo and Felicita Lopez Luciano. She moved to Harrisonburg in 1993 and enjoyed studying the Bible with the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witness. She was a homemaker with a love for flowers and gardening. Her husband Carmelo Rodriguez preceded her in death in 1990. Surviving are four daughters, Carmen Rodriguez; Migdalia Martineau, Ramona Martineau; Felicita Rodriguez; a granddaughter raised by her Josette A. Arnone; three sons, Nelson Rodriguez; Carmelo E. Rodriguez; Rafael Rodriguez; three sisters, Ada Lebron-Luciano; Luz M. Luciano; Blanca Luciano; twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-nine great- grandchildren. Preceded in death by a son, Leonardo Rodriguez who died in 1990 and three brothers, Luis Lopez; Agustin Luciano; and Ramiro Luciano and one sister, Daisy Luciano. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3p.m. until 5p.m. and a funeral service will follow at 5p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at later date in Puerto Rico.

Floyd D. Hartman, 94

Harrisonburg - Floyd Dwight Hartman, 94, died April 27, 2009 at Oak Lea Nursing Home where he had been a resident. Mr. Hartman was born on January 21, 1915, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Walter E. and Della Pearl Layman Hartman. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Post 27. He worked for the US Postal Service as a mail carrier until his retirement. He attended Park View Mennonite Church. His wife Marie Reviere Hartman preceded him in death. Surviving are three sisters Ruby Whitelaw and husband Ernest, Harrisonburg; Juanita McMullen and husband Don, Harrisonburg; Alta Terry, Harrisobnurg; a friend, Frances Siever; step grandchildren, Danny R. Devier, Lynchburg; and Linda Simmers Mt. Crawford; four step great grandchildren. Mr. Hartman was also preceded in death by an infant son, a brother-in-law, Marvin R. Terry and a step grandson, C.H. Devier Jr. Pastor Phil Kniss will conduct a graveside service Wednesday afternoon at 2p.m at the Mount Clinton cemetery. At his request, the body was cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to the VMRC, Good Samaritan Fund, 1501 Virginia Avenue, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22802. McMullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Opal Whetzel, 88

Harrisonburg - Pauline O. Whetzel, 88, passed away, Wednesday April 22, 2009 at Crestwood, of the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community where she had lived for the past five years. Mrs. Whetzel was born on February 18, 1921 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late George William and Lula Virginia Jones Sherfey. On July 9, 1938 she married Scott Beery Whetzel who preceded her in death on July 13, 1999. Surviving are one daughter, Wanda Barrick and husband Dale, Silver Spring, MD; one sister, Mildred F. Sherfey, Harrisonburg, one brother, Albert W. Sherfey, Harrisonburg; two grandsons, Andrew Barrick and wife Stacey and Todd Barrick and fiancé Laura Gentry. Mrs. Whetzel was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Sprinkle and three brothers, Gilbert G. Sherfey, Charles C. Sherfey, and Everett L. Sherfey. Janet E. Whetzel will conduct a funeral service, Saturday, April 25, 2009 at, 11:00 a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Singers Glen cemetery. Carol G. Heatwole

Carol Goshow Heatwole, 58, went to be with the Lord, April 10, 2009 at her home surrounded by her family. She had valiantly fought cancer for four years. Carol was born on May 18, 1950 in Sellersville, Pa. and was the daughter of the late Irene S. Keller and Henry M. Goshow of Souderton, Pa. Carol graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School and later worked there in food service for fourteen years. She was a member of Harrisonburg Mennonite Church, where she was treasurer of the ladies sewing group. Carol loved her family and time spent together. She cared for children and nurtured them in her home and in Sunday school. She used her gifts of baking and sewing to bless many people. She joyfully noticed the birds and many will think of her when they see a bluebird. On September 27, 1969, she married Leo E. Heatwole who survives. Surviving in addition to her husband and father are two daughters, Carmen Miller and husband Chad, Harrisonburg, Christy Kauffman and husband Ryan, Lancaster, Pa.; four brothers, Lowell Goshow and wife Lois, Phoenix, Az., Glenn Goshow and wife Helen, Syracuse, NY, Leon Goshow and wife Gloria, Litchfield Park, Az., Rod Goshow and wife Lucy, Forksville, Pa.; two sisters, Sandy Wampole and husband Denny, Green Lane, Pa., Bev Kochsmeier and husband David, Bethlehem, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Ginny and Clint Miller, and Ezra Kauffman. Pastors Craig Maven and Mark Keller will conduct a memorial service, Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. at the Harrisonburg Mennonite Church Fellowship Hall. At her request, the body was cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to Harrisonburg Mennonite Church, Women’s Sewing Group, 1552 South High Street, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801.

Robert H. Taylor, 55

Broadway - Robert H. Taylor, 55, a resident of Lee High Residence died May 1, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Taylor was born on July 7, 1953 in Newport News, Virginia and was the son of Gilbert E. Taylor Jr., Hampton and the late Norma K. Taylor. In addition to his father he is survived by two brothers, Michael L. Taylor Sr and wife Deborah, Yorktown; Gilbert E. Taylor III, Broadway; a sister Sherry Lynn Taylor, Williamsburg; his mother, Willa Mae Norwood; Reverend Tim Thomas and Dave Gullman will conduct a funeral service Monday afternoon at 3p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg. Burial will follow in Greenmount cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2p.m. until 3p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant View Home, P.O. Box 426, Broadway, VA 22815.
