Vivian S. Shifflett

Vivian Sayre Shifflett, 85, of 302 N. Second St., Bridgewater, formerly of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Bridgewater Nursing Home.

Mrs. Shifflett was born June 28, 1926, in Mount Crawford, Va., and was a daughter of the late Moss Mcowan and Clarice (Hoke) Sayre.

She was a graduate of Bridgewater High School and had one year of nurses training at Rockingham Memorial Hospital’s Nursing School.

On Dec. 24, 1946, she was married to Marion Shifflett Jr., who preceded her in death Feb. 3, 2011.

She is survived by a son, Wayne Shifflett and wife, June Anne, of Weyers Cave; two grandchildren, David Shifflett and Martha Shifflett, both of Weyers Cave; and two great-grandchildren, Autumn and Siera Nesselrodt.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with the Rev. Helen Zottoli officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marvin Lee Spitzer Jr.

Marvin Lee “Pee-Wee” Spitzer Jr., 71, of Broadway, died Aug. 7, 2011, at his residence.

He was born June 22, 1940, in New Market, and was a son of the late Marvin Lee and Mary Elizabeth Kingan Sr.

He retired from Dunham-Bush, where he worked on the paint line. He was a lifetime member of the Broadway Volunteer Fire Department and was also a member of the Mayland Christian Church.

On June 16, 1962, he married the former Linda May, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Michael Scott Spitzer of Broadway; two daughters, Cathy Slifer and husband, Kenny, of Broadway, and Lisa Strickler and husband, Bruce, of Timberville; and two grandchildren, Justin and Autumn Slifer, both of Broadway.

The Rev. Cliff Poirot will conduct a funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mayland Christian Church. Burial will follow at the Bethel cemetery in Mayland.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.

Stanley E. Smith Sr.

Stanley Elburn Smith Sr., 78, of Elkton, died Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born Sept. 12, 1929, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Claude J. Smith Sr. and Lillian McDorman Smith.

He was a member of the Mount Olive Brethren Church and had played fast-pitch softball for a number of years. He had retired from Wayne-Tex in Waynesboro after 28 years. He had most recently worked at Wal-Mart.

On June 11, 1949, he married Marelia Morris 'Sissy' Smith, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Neil E. Smith of Harrisonburg, Stanley E. Smith Jr. of Waynesboro and Jesse R. Smith of Mathias, W.Va.; two daughters, Deborah A. Smith of Elkton and Barbara J. Thornton of Harriston; a brother, Claude J. Smith Jr. of Harriston; a sister, Audrey Powers of Baltimore, Md.; a grandson raised in the home, Barry Herring of Elkton; 14 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Pastors Fredric G. Miller and Jeff Ferguson will conduct the funeral 3 p.m. Sunday at the Mount Olive Brethren Church in Pineville. Burial will be in the East Lawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

Donna Jeanne Brand

GROTTOES - Donna Jeanne Brand, 65, died on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg.

She was born on May 7, 1945, and was a daughter of the late James Edward and Lillian Vann Newland.

Mrs. Brand attended St. Mary's Pine Lutheran Church in Mount Jackson.

She is survived by a son, Michael Spitzer of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and a sister, Pamela G. Miller of Quicksburg.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Pine Lutheran Church with the Rev. Karen Van Stee officiating. Interment will be at a later date. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Buddie Eugene Clanahan

EDINBURG - Buddie Eugene Clanahan, 89, died on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Life Care Center of New Market.

He was born on May 31, 1921, in Shenandoah County and was a son of the late Clarence William and Lula Estep Park and raised by David Greene and Ollie Florence Lonas Chanahan.

Mr. Clanahan was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Edinburg and was a retired farmer.

On June 2, 1944, he married Charlotte Virginia Sellers Clanahan, who died on Feb. 12, 2009.

He is survived by a son, Michael G. Clanahan of New Market; a daughter, Jean Winne of Poughkeepsie, NY; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at Bethel Lutheran Church at a later date.

Shelva Jean Mitts
(July 28, 1937 - July 4, 2011)

Shelva Jean Mitts, 73, of Grottoes, passed away Monday, July 4, 2011 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Shelva was born in Rockingham County on July 28, 1937, and was a daughter of the late George Allen and Anna Cordellia (Gooden) Roadcap.

She was retired from Ethan Allen in Bridgewater, and later worked for JMU in Dining Service, Mrs. Green's Kitchen, where she was known as Grandma. She was a member of Laurel Hill Full Gospel Church Verona.

Shelva is survived by a daughter, Anna Vest and husband Buddy of Lyndhurst; two sons, Rudolph Mitts and wife Tamara of Brandywine, WV, and Earl Wayne Mitts of Grottoes; two sisters, Norma Lee Atkins and husband Don of Dumfries, VA, Ellen May Shaver and husband Buddy of Weyers Cave; a brother, James Franklin Roadcap and wife Edna of Harrisonburg; and three sister-in-laws, Faye Roadcap of Crimora, Anita Roadcap of Grottoes, and Carol Sue Roadcap of Harrisonburg. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, Crystal Bartley, Johnny Wayne Parnell, Jr., Heather Link, Matthew Vest, Kaleb Vest, Bethany Marie Mauzy, Anthony Francis Henderson, Miranda Nicole Henderson, Bryant Allen Mitts, Jaiden Dawn Mitts, Cotey Wayne Mitts, and Whitney Michelle Mitts; and seven great-grandchildren, Vanessa Bartley, Allison Bartley, Abbagail Parnell, Tristan Link, Grace Link, Jaydrin Shawn Gregory, and Anthony Francis Henderson, II.; special friends, Claude McCray, Faye Blacka, and Russell Hassler.

She is preceded in death by three brothers, George Edward Roadcap, Robert Carroll Roadcap, Everett Landon Roadcap; one sister Janet Louise Curry; a sister-in-law, Mamie Roadcap; a brother-in-law, Cletus Edwin Curry; and late husband Rudolph Hensil Mitts, Jr.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00am Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Laurel Hill Full Gospel Church in Verona, with Rev. William Strickler, Rev. Pete Grimm, and Brother Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow at Port Republic Mutual cemetery. Pallbearers include Michael Bartley, Keith Link, Anthony Henderson, Kenneth Brinkley, Jim Roadcap, Phillip Roadcap, Steven Roadcap, and Bud Shaver, Jr.; honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Bodkin, Harold Morris, Bernard Wilfong, and Alfred Morris

The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday, July 8, 2011 at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes, or at the home of her sister, Ellen, at any time.

Mary Ellen Wilson Conner

STRASBURG - Mary Ellen Wilson Conner, died on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Greenfield Reflections of Strasburg.

She was born in Strasburg and was a daughter of the late William Jordan and Mary H. Goode Wilson.

Mrs. Conner was a long time member of the Strasburg Christian Church.

She is survived by a son, Ronnie D. Conner of Cape Coral, FL; a daughter, Debbie C. Stickley of Winston-Salem, NC; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Douglas Conner; three brothers; and six sisters.

A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, Dec. 11, at Stover Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Geneal Wilson officiating. Burial was in Riverview cemetery.

Silas Emanuel Conner

EDINBURG - Silas Emanuel Conner, 86, died on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Consulate Health Care.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1924, in Maurertown and was a son of the late Luther M. and May Funk Conner.

Mr. Conner was retired from Rocco and was a member of Woodstock Moose.

He is survived by his daughter, Gloria McInturff of Edinburg; two sons, James Conner of Edinburg and Lonnie Conner of Strasburg; a sister, Mary Conner Smith of Winchester; a brother, Reuben Conner of Tiffin, OH; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary “Louise” Reedy Conner.

A graveside service was conducted on Saturday, Dec. 11, at Massanutten cemetery, Woodstock with the Reverend Howard Lutz.

Violet Elaine Burner Funk

FRONT ROYAL - Violet Elaine Burner Funk, 79, died on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at her home.

She was born on Sept. 12, 1931, at Carmel and was a daughter of the late William Henry Burner and Nettie Mabel Ritenour Burner of Fort Valley.

Mrs. Funk graduated from Edinburg High School in 1949. She was a member of Trinity Brethren Church at Dry Run. She was last employed by Strasburg Automotive until her retirement and had also been employed by Eileen Inc. for several years prior. She was a member of the Women of the Moose after joining in 1984. She served one term as Senior Regent and Recorder. She received the Academy of Friendship Degree in 1986 and the Collegian Degree in 1992. She was formerly an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Rivermont Fire Dept.

She is survived by her children, Joyce Harris of Strasburg, June Cook of Front Royal, Peggy Kyger of Front Royal, Roger Funk of Front Royal, Connie Knepper of Marshall, Barbara Shuler of Stanley, Ruth Cook of Plant City, FL, Vickie Noser of Front Royal, and William “Bill” Funk of Front Royal; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Henry Funk who died in 1976; and 12 siblings.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 17, at 12:30 p.m., at the Royal Order of the Moose, 1340 John Marshall Hwy in Front Royal. Burial will be private.

Josephine "Jo Anne" Halterman

FORT VALLEY - Josephine “Jo Anne” Halterman, 77, died on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at her home.

She was born on July 13, 1933, in Gaithersburg, MD, and was a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Bertha K. Selby.

She was a gardener, artist and nature lover. She attended Christian churches.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Kathryn Barbour of Fort Valley; and one brother, Murray A. Selby of Fort Valley.

A funeral service was conducted on Monday, Dec. 13, at Community Church of God at Kings Crossing by the Reverend Jennings Wood. Burial was in Emerson Walters cemetery.
