Betty Surface Bennett

THE PLAINS - Betty Surface Bennett, 55, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at her residence.

Mrs. Bennett was born Sept. 30, 1950, in Leesburg, daughter of the late Adam Leon and Mary Lockhart Simpson.

Survivors include her lifetime partner, Ronald W. Bennett; two daughters, Eva A. Foster of Marshall and Terri L. Soaper of The Plains; two sons, Richard W. Surface Jr. of Culpeper and Aubrey L. Surface of Marshall; four sisters, Helen G. Sudduth of Middleburg, Hazel V. Tobin of Mount Jackson, Daisy E. Kirk and Joyce I. Deal, both of Marshall; four brothers, Ira W. Simpson of Edinburg, Clyde R. Simpson Sr. of Ocala, Fla., James A. Simpson and Roger A. Simpson, both of Marshall; and 15 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Sherman F. Simpson, Verner L. Simpson and Fred B. Simpson; and two sisters, Danes S. Elswick and Dorothy L. Belcher.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Royston Funeral Home, Marshall, by Elder Daniel Simpson. Interment was in Middleburg Memorial cemetery.

Eva Virginia Lloyd Carroll

Eva Virginia Lloyd Carroll, 87, of Woodstock, formerly of Bluemont and Winchester, died Friday, Dec. 2. 2005, in Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Mrs. Carroll was born Sept. 16, 1918, daughter of the late Olva and Agnes Carroll. She had attended Aldie High School. She was employed as postmistress of Bluemont and by Allied Corp. of Dulles. She was a member of Providence Chapel United Methodist Church in Bluemont and the wife of the late Grayson Lloyd and Calvin D. Carroll.

Surviving are seven children, Cary Grantland Lloyd and Barry W. Lloyd, both of Winchester, M. Kirby Lloyd of Star Tannery, Dennis D. Lloyd of Boyce, Kevin W. Lloyd and Roxanne C. Arnold, both of Woodstock and Timothy S. Lloyd of Falling Waters, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 14, 2006, at Providence Chapel United Methodist Church.

Hugh G. Darnell Sr.

STRASBURG - Hugh G. Darnell Sr., 83, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Darnell was born Dec. 16, 1921, in Elkin, N.C., son of the late Edgar C. and Aldora Sebastian Darnell. He was an Army veteran of World War II, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and Croix de Guerre with Palm. He was a military personnel officer for the Department of the Army. He was a member of Mount Hope Presbyterian Church, National Field Archery Association, officer of NORVA Archery Association and Virginia Bowhunters Association, charter member of Order of the Golden Feather, Eagle Scout and past president and chief of Burke Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. He was the husband of the late Frances Lucille Stinnett Darnell.

Surviving are four sons, Hugh G. Darnell Jr. of Dunnellon, Fla., Patrick H. Darnell of Rockville, Md., Michael J. Darnell and Mark E. Darnell, both of Strasburg; three daughters, Linda L. Mock of Bluemont, Karen D. Wagner of Woodstock and Kathleen D. Pritt of Millboro; a sister, Emma Lee Piatt of Strasburg; 22 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Jones Funeral Home, Winchester, by Dr. William E. Ingram. Burial will be in Lebanon Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Scott A. Darnell, Michael L. Singhas, Robert A. DuBrueler, Michael J. Darnell Jr., Mark J. Darnell, James E. Darnell, Kurt V. Fleming, Jack R. Fleming and D. Alex Pritt.

William Ossie Kelley Jr.

New Market - William Ossie Kelley Jr., 72, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.

Mr. Kelley was born Dec. 21, 1932, in Richmond, son of the late William Ossie Kelley Sr. and Kate Puryear Kelley. He was a veteran of the Air Force and was a retired documentary producer/director for television.

He was the husband of the late Winifred Burton Kelley.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy J. Kelley of Chesapeake; two sons, William D. Kelley of Oklahoma City, Okla. and William O. Kelley III of Chicago, Ill.; a stepson, Edward K. Moser of Laurel, Md.; a sister, Kate K. Saufley of Denver, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in the Mount Hermon Church cemetery, west of Mount Jackson. His body was cremated.

Iva Waggy Knicely

HARRISONBURG - Iva Waggy Knicely, 94, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Knicely was born July 28, 1911, in Pendleton County, W.Va., daughter of the late Hendren and Louella Mitchell Waggy. She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Jacob"s Spaders Lutheran Church.

In 1932, she married James M. Knicely, who preceded her in death in June 1976.

Surviving are two sons, Gene E. Knicely of Harrisonburg and James I. Knicely of Alexandria; two daughters, Alma Blankenship of Falls Church and Linda Carrier of Harrisonburg; a brother, Forrest Waggy of Mount Jackson; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Diana Horton conducted the funeral Monday, Dec. 5, at the McMullen Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial followed in Mount Horeb cemetery, Hinton.

Faye June Atkins

ROANOKE - Faye June Atkins, 62, formerly of Harrisonburg, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at her daughter"s home after a brief battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleta Vance Kisamore and Ervin Kisamore of Mount Solon.

Mrs. Atkins was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Harrisonburg and attended Westside Baptist Church in Salem. She retired from Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg after 34 years in the dietary department as a food service representative. In her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her family and shopping.

Surviving are her husband, Thomas Henry Atkins; adopted daughters, Michelle and Barbara Ryan of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Sarah, Hannah, and Caleb; four stepchildren, Mike, Pat, David and Rebecca; a number of step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; a brother, Earl Kisamore of Mount Solon; sisters, Mardel "Ann" Botkin of Harrisonburg, Joy Michael of Mount Solon, Sharon Grim of New Market, Geneva Berkley of Brookneal and Ruth Rexrode of York, Pa.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted Thursday, Dec. 1, at Simpson Funeral Home by the Rev. Bill Atkins. Interment followed in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 554, Roanoke, VA 24003-0554.

Mildred Hockman

Mildred Hockman, 78, of Athens, Ga., died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005.

Mrs. Hockman was born in Haywood County, N.C., daughter of the late Albert N. and Johnnie Sutherland Campbell. She was an American Red Cross volunteer and a Protestant. She was the wife of the late Jessie F. Hockman Jr.

Surviving are two daughters, Donna Cohen of Athens and Freda A. Derouen of Biloxi, Miss.; two sons, Jerry L. Hockman of San Antonio and Kenneth W. Hockman of Key West, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Maurertown Church of the Brethren cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bernstein Funeral Home in Athens.

Clara M. Hitt Kanotus

WINCHESTER - Clara M. Hitt Kanotus, 99, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2005, at a local nursing home.

Mrs. Kanotus was born Aug. 7, 1906, in Little Washington, daughter of the late Thomas E. and Sarah W. Jewell Hitt. She and her late husband, Theodore Kanotus Sr., were former owners of the Winchester Hotel and Royal Lunch in Winchester. She had worked at ZeroPak, Shenandoah Apple, Virginia Avenue Elementary School, Duffs Motel and as a baby sitter.

Surviving are three sons, Theodore Kanotus Jr. of Stanley, John Wayne Kanotus of Strasburg and David Lee Kanotus of Winchester; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Thursday, Dec. 1, at Mount Hebron cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Rodden officiating.

James "Sam" Haun

STRASBURG - James "Sam" Haun, 46, died Nov. 23, 2005, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Haun was born July 5, 1959, in Woodstock, son of Kathy Lineweaver Haun and the late James Edgar Haun. He was a truck driver for the past 14 years and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving with his mother are his wife, Mary Frances Ritenour Haun; a son, Samuel T. Haun of Strasburg; a daughter, Mary Beth Haun of Strasburg; a brother, Tom Haun of Toms Brook; a sister, Tammy Haun of Woodstock; a half brother, Al Jordan of Mount Jackson; and two grandchildren, Lillie Haun and Jessica Kowalewksi.

A graveside service was conducted Monday, Dec. 5, in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick, by Pastor C. Keith Warren.

Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1132, Fairfax, VA 22038-1132.

Mildred Frye Fansler

BASYE - Mildred Frye Fansler, 79, died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Fansler was born Oct. 24, 1926, in Richmond, daughter of the late Russell Mathias and Nellie Easton Burnett Frye. She was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Orkney Springs, where she served as organist for 40 years. She was a member and past matron of Woodstock Chapter No. 93 and Spurmont Chapter No. 64, Strasburg, Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are her husband, John Clayton Fansler; two daughters, Dolores F. Coffman of Basye and Hettie J. Fansler of Luray; a son, Clarence W. Fansler of Mount Jackson; a stepdaughter, Sharon Price of Earlysville; two sisters, Shirley Alexander of Amherst and Judy Kay True of Richmond; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two step-grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren.

The Rev. G. William Nabers conducted the funeral Sunday, Dec. 4, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Orkney Springs. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

An Eastern Star memorial service was held Saturday at the church by the Spurmont Chapter No. 64, Strasburg.

Robert Samuel Frick

HARRISONBURG - Robert Samuel Frick, 90, a resident of Park Gables at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, died at Rockingham Memorial Hospital on Friday, Dec. 2, 2005.

Mr. Frick was born Oct. 9, 1915, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late George Walter and Amy Ger-trude Swart Frick. He grew up in Westville, N.J. and graduated from Woodbury High School in 1932. He enrolled for a short period of time in South Jersey College of Law and Yale University until he left to serve in the Army Air Corps and U.S. Air Force. He served from May 1940 to March 1946 as a fighter pilot and flight test engineer, receiving commendations from "Hap" Arnold and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was the first commissioned engineer officer at Camp Springs Air Force Base, which is now Andrews Air Force Base. After the war, he became a pharmaceutical sales representative for Lederle Laboratories, a division of American Cyanamid. The last 15 of those years were spent as a specialist with Military Personnel in Washington D.C. and European countries.

Mr. Frick was an avid reader, golfer, fisherman, billiard player and violinist. He was a member of Muhlenberg Lutheran Church in Harrisonburg, The P-47 Club, past member of the Lions Club and the Walnut Creek Country Club of Goldsboro, N.C.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, George W. Frick Jr. and Charles H. Frick.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Ann Holmes Wilburn Frick, whom he married Nov. 25, 1943. They had three children: Robert Samuel Frick Jr. (deceased 1983) and his wife Susan Chapman Frick of Tampa, Fla., William Walter Frick of Houston, Texas and Ann Frick Hepner Holtzman and husband William of Edinburg; grandchildren, Robert Samuel Frick III and wife Irene of Tampa, Fla., William Larry Frick of Lewisburg, N.C., Justin Christopher Hepner and wife Tamsin of Richmond and Melanie Ann Hepner of Edinburg; two step-grandchildren, Jill Holtzman Vogel and William Todd Holtzman; two step great-grandchildren, William Alexander Vogel and John Benner Vogel; and a paternal nephew, Charles Frick of Florida.

The Rev. Joseph Vought will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Muhlenberg Lutheran Church, 281 East Market Street, Harrisonburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Muhlenberg Lutheran Church or Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community.

Robert Lee Brotzman

MOUNT JACKSON - Robert Lee Brotzman SGM Ret., 74, died on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at his home.

He was born on Aug. 14, 1936, in Neb.

Mr. Brotzman served in the United States Army in Vietnam and retired after 26 years.

He is survived by two sons, Robert J. Brotzman of Washington, DC, and Steven Brotzman of Virginia Beach; a sister, Janet Brotzman of Neb.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted on Friday, Nov.12, at 10:30 a.m., at Dellinger Funeral Home in Mount Jackson. Military honors will be by Muhlenburg Post 199 American Legion Woodstock.

The family will receive friends prior to the service.
