Cletus Edward Jenkins, Sr.

STEPHENS CITY - Cletus Edward Jenkins, Sr., 83, died on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

He was born on June 21, 1927, in Rappahannock County, and was the son of John D. Jenkins, Sr. and Stella P. Atkins Jenkins.

Mr. Jenkins was a self-employed mason. He served in the U.S. Army during W.W.II. He was a member of the Winchester VFW Post 2123.

On Aug. 18, 1948, he married Jeanette Dodson Jenkins, who survives.

He is survived by four daughters, Diane Burgess, Joyce Jenkins, Janet Taylor, and Sharon Jenkins all of Front Royal; a son, Cletus E. “Bubba” Jenkins, Jr. of Strasburg; and a granddaughter; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Becky Jenkins Bowler; two brothers, Cleveland R. Jenkins and John D. Jenkins, Sr.

A funeral service was conducted on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Enders and Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Stephens City with the Rev. Julianne Sloughfy officiating. Burial was in Salem Church of the Brethren cemetery, Stephens City.

Military honors will be provided by the Winchester VFW Post 2123.

Carrie Elizabeth Lee

STEPHENS CITY - Carrie Elizabeth Lee, 31, died on Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, in Stephens City.

She was born on Jan. 1, 1979, in Winchester, and was a daughter of Gordon Lewis Owens of Star Tannery and Diane Sue Conner Owens of Stephens City.

Mrs. Lee was a homemaker. She attended Salem Church of the Brethren and was attending Lord Fairfax Community College.

She married Robert D. Lee in March 2005, who survives.

She is survived by her children, Gracie and Austin Lee, Brendan and Jacob Owens, all of Stephens City; and a sister, Kristen Owens of Stephens City.

A funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at the Salem Church of the Brethren, Stephens City with the Rev. Julianne Sloughty officiating and assisted by the Rev. Shelvie Mantz. Burial was in Salem Church of the Brethren cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carrie Elizabeth Lee Burial Fund, c/o her mother, Diane Owens, 574 Salem Church Rd., Stephens City, Va. 22655 or to Salem Church of the Brethren, P. O. Box 613, Stephens City, Va. 22655.

Sidney Ray Lonas

NEW MARKET - Sidney Ray Lonas, 82, formerly of Basye, died on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

He was born on Feb. 29, 1928, in Basye, and was a son of the late Albert Jacob Lonas, Sr. and Viola Tusing Lonas.

Mr. Lonas served in the United States Army and was a member of Smith Creek Regular Baptist Church in New Market.

He is survived by his wife, Velma Lonas; a daughter, Joyce Blevins of Edinburg; two sons, David Lonas of Basye, and Sidney Michael Lonas of Strasburg; two sisters, Janet Sine of Front Royal, and Catherine Golladay of Basye; three brothers, Albert Lonas, Jr. of Harrisonburg, Eugene Lonas, and Randolph Lonas both of Basye; eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Alisa Lonas Hottle; and a sister, Arlene Ward.

A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Smith Creek Regular Baptist Church with the Rev. Brent Hockema officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Church cemetery, Luray.

Byrd Albert Mumaw, Jr.

EDINBURG - Byrd Albert Mumaw, Jr., 78, died on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010.

He was born on March 18, 1932, in Edinburg, and was a son of the late Byrd Albert Sr. and Cleta Pence Mumaw.

Mr. Mumaw served in the United States Army during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from the military in 1970 after twenty-two years of service. He was a loyal member of VFW Post 2447 and the American Legion Post 199.

On April 16, 1964, he married Hildegard E. Brunner, who died on May 27, 1994.

He is survived by his three children, Melissa Stout of Strasburg, David Mumaw, and Robert Mumaw of Edinburg; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Kathleen Hoffman and Lena Mae Hollar of Toms Brook; and a brother, Stanley Mumaw of Woodstock. He was preceded in death by siblings, Jack Pence, Charles Mumaw, Hazel Wright, Mabel Bergeron, Betty Copenhaver, and Dorothy Kibler.

A graveside service was conducted on Saturday, Nov. 13, at Cedarwood cemetery.

Richard Kellogg

Richard C. Kellogg, 84, of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He was a resident at Sunnyside Retirement Community.

Mr. Kellogg was a born Feb. 1, 1924, in New Rochelle, N.Y., and was the son of the late Alfred O. and Julia Kellogg. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Denver, Colo., and was a U.S. Army combat veteran of WWII. He was an avid golfer and retired investor.

Surviving family includes four sons, Richard Kellogg and wife, Jan, of Houston, Texas, Montgomery Kellogg and wife, Jeanette, of Harrisonburg, Donn Kellogg of Highlands, Colo., and Michael Kellogg and wife, Charlene, of Bozeman, Mont.; six grandchildren, Clark, Winnie, Taylor, Tristin, Catherine and Elizabeth; and a special friend and companion, Doris West.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, David Kellogg and a sister, Ruth Kellogg.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2008, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Rev. Tom Smith and Rev. Paul O'Gorek officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Artie Cain Reed

STEPHENS CITY - Artie Cain Reed, 98, died on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at Spring Arbor of Winchester.

She was born on Oct. 1, 1912, in Fort Valley, and was a daughter of the late John W. and Mattie Wood Ritenour.

Mrs. Reed was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winchester and was a self-employed beautician.

She married Harry E. Cain and then Millard K. Reed, both whom preceded her in death.

She was preceded in death by four sisters; Vernie E. Frye, Minnie R. Jackson, Beulah Triplett and Ada Brewer; and a half brother Roland Wood.

A graveside service was conducted on Monday, Nov. 15, at Mt. Hebron cemetery with the Rev. Richard W. Reifsnyder officiating.

Faye Metz Rhodes

WINCHESTER - Faye Metz Rhodes, 79, died on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center.

She was born on Jan. 6, 1931, in Winchester, and was a daughter of the late J. Earl and Mary K. Metz.

Mrs. Rhodes was a dental assistant for Dr. Davis and she was a member of the Braddock Street United Methodist Church.

On April 1, 1983, she married Samuel F. Rhodes, who preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 2005.

She is survived by two stepdaughters, Marcy Rhodes Wallace of Grand Ledge, Mich., and Lisa Rhodes Huddle of Strasburg; one stepson, Sandy Rhodes of Zionsville, Pa.; and eight step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard E. Metz.

A graveside service was conducted on Thursday, Nov. 18, in Mt. Hebron cemetery with the Rev. Dr. James A. Hewitt, III officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, Va.

Jane Catherine Shafer

MOUNT JACKSON - Jane Catherine Shafer, 65, died on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, at her home.

She was born July, 1945, in Shenandoah County, and was a daughter of the late Robert J. and Dora Zigler Shafer.

She is survived by her companion Carroll Burner; a sister Glorine Richards of Woodstock; three brothers, Garland Shafer of Canada, Louie Shafer of Mount Jackson, and Gary Shafer of Edinburg. She was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Mates; and two brothers, Landon Shafer and Ralph Shafer.

A graveside service was conducted on Sunday, Nov. 14, at Stony Creek cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Stony Creek cemetery Fund, 4729 Crooked Run Rd., Mount Jackson, Va. 22842.

Robert Lee Whitmer, Sr.

BASYE - Robert Lee Whitmer, Sr., 77, died on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1933, in Shenandoah County, and was a son of the late Jess Howard Whitmer and Hannah Barb Whitmer Estep.

Mr. Whitmer was an Air Force veteran, a mechanic and construction worker. He was a member of Stoney Creek Church of the Brethren, New Market American Legion and lifetime member of NRA.

He is survived by his wife, Rosella N. Whitmer; daughters, Patricia A. Harlow of Warrenton, and Joan M. Barb of Edinburg; sons, Robert Lee Whitmer Jr. of Mount Jackson, and John W. Whitmer of Edinburg; sisters, Mary Beedle, and Helen Jones, both of Mount Jackson; brothers, Jesse Whitmer of S.C., and David Whitmer of New Market; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Keeler; and a brother, Russell Whitmer.

A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m., at Stoney Creek Church of the Brethren. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brian N. Harlow Jr., Ryan D. Harlow, Andy A. Whitmer, Matthew R. Barb, Jacob H.P. Miller and Mark S. Jordan. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary, Bobby, Jeff and Steve Jones.

The family will receive friends from 12 noon - 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19, at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Robert Whitmer Burial Fund, c/o Dellinger Funeral Home, 157 N. Main St., Woodstock, Va. 22664.

Jerry Allen Wines, Jr.

FRONT ROYAL - Jerry Allen Wines, Jr., 59, died on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at his home.

He was born on Aug. 4, 1951, in Front Royal, and was a son of Thelma Davis Wines of Front Royal and the late Jerry Allen Wines, Sr.

Mr. Wines was a graduate of Warren County High School. He was a pipe fitter for Avtex in Front Royal and for the last 21 years in security for Costco. He was a member of Buckton Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Chante Pummell of Woodstock, and Blair Wines of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Bruce Wines of Front Royal; and two grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at Maddox Funeral Home. Interment was in Panorama Memorial Gardens in Waterlick.

Memorial contributions may be made to Buckton Presbyterian Church, 2315 Strasburg Rd., Front Royal, Va. 22630.

Helen Adeline Kincheloe

MOUNT JACKSON - Helen Adeline Kincheloe, 75, of Mount Jackson died on Saturday, July 24, 2010.

A graveside service was held at the Broad Run Church cemetery in W.Va. on Wednesday, July 28 by Pastor William Coffindaffer.

She was born May 18, 1935 in Washington, DC. She was the daughter of the late Burton Arden and Bessie Whipp Dye.

She is survived by a son, Gordon Lee Kincheloe, Jr. of Mount Jackson; three daughters, Fonda K. Scrogham of Manassas Park; Nancy M. Vance of Alliance, Ohio; and Lisa N. Breeden of Mount Jackson.Also surviving are fourteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; and a dear friend of 45 years, Naomi Whetzel of Mount Jackson.

The family request that memorial contributions be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, Virginia 23601.

Edith Virginia Himelright Lichliter

STRASBURG - Edith Virginia Himelright Lichliter, 91, of Strasburg died on Friday, July 23, 2010 at Lynn Care Center of Front Royal.

She was born December 12, 1918, in Frederick County, the daughter of the late Charles Oliver and Vernie Mae Sherman Himelright. She was married to Charles Franklin "Jack" Lichliter on June 22, 1935. She attended school in Frederick County and worked for American Viscose in Front Royal, retiring after 30 years of service.

She was a member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church, a life member of the Strasburg Ladies of the Moose Lodge 1319, a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 77 of Strasburg, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Strasburg Vol. Fire Department and the Strasburg Vol. Rescue Squad.

She is survived by a daughter Connie Lichliter Himelright of Lebanon Church; Grandsons, Wayne Allen Turner of Toms Brook, Jackie Franklin Lichliter of Strasburg, Don Russell Himelright, Jr., of Lebanon Church; great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, "Jack" Lichliter; Son, Gene Allen Lichliter; sisters, Nellie Collins, Mae Orndorff, Hattie Rebecca Henry; brothers, Lovess R. Himelright, Joseph William Preston Himelright, and Dallas Eugene Himelright. She was the last member of her immediate family.

A graveside service was conducted on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Gravel Spring cemetery, Star Tannery with Pastor James Daley officiating.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Gravel Springs cemetery Association, c/o David Lee Brill, 100 Butterscotch Court, Winchester, VA 22602, or a charity of one's choice.
