Elliott Ray Taylor Sr.
Retired tobacco executive dies
Jan 20, 2001
The day the French Army liberated Paris during World War II was perhaps the most important "quick trip into town" in the life of Elliott Ray Taylor Sr., then assigned to Gen. George S. Patton's staff.
"Patton was ticked off that the Americans had been ordered to hold off and let the French reoccupy Paris," said Mr. Taylor's son, E. Ray Taylor Jr. "[He] told dad to go in with the French, so he hopped on a tank and rode in with them. He was supposed to get some stockings for Patton's wife."
Mr. Taylor spent two days in Paris with the French Second Armored Division, wondering, but quickly gaining an understanding of why the French didn't continue on after Paris and chase the retreating German Army.
"[The French] were all just parked there," said Mr. Taylor's son, recounting his father's tale. "They weren't worried about chasing the Germans. They were just happy to be home."
Mr. Taylor, 85, of Rome, Ga., formerly of Ashland, died Dec. 24, 2000, of heart failure.
A graduate of Virginia military Institute, Mr. Taylor was an accomplished athlete during both high school and college. He lettered in numerous sports and even staged exhibition boxing matches during half-time at basketball games in which he played all four quarters.
"He was like Tarzan or something," said his son.
Mr. Taylor was a retired tobacco wholesale company owner in Rome, Ga.
In addition to his son, E. Ray Taylor, Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Beverly Bailey Taylor; a daughter, May Bailey Taylor Hollis; and a son, Richard Coles Taylor, all of Atlanta.
A memorial service and interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery Monday at 9 a.m.

Brown F. Pryor, 85, of Goochland, dies
Apr 07, 2001
Brown Fleming Pryor was a quiet man. But when he spoke, "people respected him. He was influential. He was a leader in his community," said J. Clopton Knibb, who served as Goochland commonwealth's attorney while Mr. Pryor served as Goochland County Court clerk and a charter member of the Goochland County Planning Commission.
Mr. Pryor served as clerk of the Goochland County Court, now Goochland General District Court, from 1944 until 1969. He was on the Goochland Planning Commission from 1956 to 1971.
"He supported the progress the county was making in the 1950s, passing subdivision and zoning ordinances," Knibb said. "He was in the forefront in all that."
Mr. Pryor, who retired as a salesman from the Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Co. in 1981 after 30 years, died of pneumonia Wednesday in a local hospital. He was 85 and lived in Goochland.
A funeral, with Masonic rites, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Forest Grove Christian Church in Hadensville, where he was a lifelong member and had served as an elder.
Mr. Pryor was the son of a Goochland black Smith who was working in Tazewell County at the time of his son's birth. Mr. Pryor grew up in Goochland and graduated from its public schools. He was a certified life underwriter.
He had served as a director of the Goochland County Farm Bureau and was a member of the Goochland Forum Club, where he was known for telling stories and jokes. He was a former member of the Hadensville Fire and Rescue Company.
Mr. Pryor was a past master of Cabell Lodge 328, AF & AM in Kents Store. His hobby was going to antique tractor shows.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lillian Pryor Pryor; three sons, Ernest Pryor , Andrew Pryor and Wayne Pryor, all of Hadensville, and a brother, Alfred Pryor Jr. of Richmond.
