Norman Harry Teague
(January 17, 1925 - April 3, 2013)

The Rev. Norman H. Teague slipped peacefully into Jesus arms on April 3, 2013 at Mt. View Nursing Home in Aroda, VA after suffering a stroke. He was 88. Norman was the eldest son of Harry and Maude (Reeves) Teague. He was born in Kansas City, MO on January 17, 1925. At the age of 8 during the Great Depression, his mother placed him in the Mennonite Children's Home in Kansas City, KS, along with his younger siblings, Naomi Jean and Billy. He never returned to his boyhood home, and lived in several foster homes during his teen years. He then attended Bible School at Hesston, KS. In 1941 he registered as a conscientious objector and was assigned to the 5th Civilian Program Service (CPS) Soil Conservation Camp in Colorado Springs, CO where he fulfilled his military service obligation. He returned to Hesston College and received an Associate of Arts Degree in 1948. Just prior to graduation, he toured the country as a Hesston College ambassador with the Conqueror's Quartet. His harmonious tenor voice was rarely silent. He married Fannie Troyer on August 14, 1949 at Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church in Chesapeake, Virginia. They began their married life in Hickory, VA.

Norman was ordained into Christian ministry in the Mennonite Church, and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Goshen College. He taught school in Pigeon, MI and in Johnstown, PA. Rev. Teague served numerous churches in Elton, PA, Grantsville and Bittinger, MD, Casselton, ND and in Virginia. In addition to his church ministries and teaching, he served as a jail chaplain. He was a skilled woodworker and cabinet maker. He sold Stanley Home Products and was a top sales producer for the McNess Company.

Rev. Teague was a pastor at the New Life Center in Fargo, ND which provided shelter and spiritual support to the poor and needy. He also assisted Fannie with opening and managing The Teague Home at 514 University Drive in Fargo for six years. The Home was a residential facility where they cared for 20 young male trainable special needs residents who attended the Vocational Training Center in Fargo.

Norman and Fannie moved to Chesapeake, VA in 1977 and lived on Land of Promise Road where he founded Norm's Woodworking and helped Fannie with Fannie's Bakery. In 1996, they moved to Linville, VA where Rev. Teague continued his woodworking services. He was active in the community through Living Waters Ministries, All Saints House Fellowship, and numerous prison ministries, including the Kairos Ministries. During this period of time he made caring for Fannie a priority when her health was declining.

For the past five years, Norman resided with his wife at Mt. View Nursing Home in Aroda, VA. Norman and Fannie sang together frequently with him playing guitar and Fannie on the autoharp or accordion.

Norman will be remembered most as a prayer warrior, who prayed for every family member individually, by name, daily. He talked to any stranger that he could about how he could help them or pray for them. As a young man, he hitchhiked more than 25,000 miles from the Gulf of Mississippi to lumber camps in the western U.S. While woodworking he would give customers with financial difficulties discounts. He enjoyed prison ministry. Numerous letters from prison inmates expressed their deep appreciation for Chaplain Teague's open heart.

Norman was never short on words. No matter where the family lived, he wrote articles to the local newspapers with the consistent theme of social justice. He began writing a book "Homeward Bound" that imparts his life story from the streets of Kansas City during the Depression to an orphanage, to foster homes where he was mentored in the Christian faith, which ultimately launched his life ministry. His daughter, Carole, plans to publish the work.

Rev. Teague is survived by his wife, Fannie; three daughters, Sharon (David) Vincent, Hattiesburg, MS, Carole (Ken) Schumacher, Highlands Ranch, CO, and Wanda (Bobby) Alger, Winchester, VA; one son, David Teague, Richmond, OH; and daughter-in-law, Diane Rich Teague, Austin, TX; 11 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. His eldest son, Samuel, predeceased him in 2003.

Memorial services will be held at Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church, Chesapeake, VA at 3 pm on Saturday, April 20, and at Cornerstone Church of Broadway at 4 pm on Sunday, April 21. At Norman's request, he asked that services be dedicated to the homeless and needy children of the world. He had a special passion for Franklin Graham's Samaritan's Purse and the Operation Christmas Child project of that organization.

Those desiring to do so may send memorial contributions to Norman Teague Memorial Fund, c/o Bobby & Wanda Alger, 1616 Woodstock Lane, Winchester, VA 22602.
