Charles Lee Jenkins, Sr.
(January 17, 1957 - April 18, 2013)

Charles Lee Jenkins, Sr., 56, of Broadway, VA died April 18, 2013 at his residence.

He was born January 17, 1957 in Warrenton, VA, and was a son of the late David Franklin, Sr. and Emma Reid Jenkins.

He was the owner and operator of Whit’s Market in Timberville.

On February 14, 2007 he married the former Patricia James, who survives.

Also surviving are four sons, C.J. Jenkins, Jr. of Timberville, Roger Fox, Clarence Fox, both of Broadway, Andy Fox of Timberville; two daughters, Cindy Woodward of New Market, Tina Jenkins of Harrisonburg; four brothers, David Franklin Jenkins, Jr. of Taylor, SC, Ronnie R. Jenkins of Horn Lake, MS., Paul Jenkins of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Timothy Jenkins of Fredericksburg, VA; one sister, Doris Hayes of Stafford, VA; 3 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Mike Jenkins.

Lane Turner will conduct a funeral service 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Grandle Funeral Home chapel in Broadway. Burial will be in the Linville Creek cemetery in Broadway.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 P.M. Monday at Grandle Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 1920 H Medical Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22802; or Timberville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 101, Timberville, VA 22853.

Terryl Jack 'Terry' Farrell

STRASBURG - Terryl Jack “Terry” Farrell, 70, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Farrell was born on Feb. 21, 1939, in Monterey, Calif., and was a son of the late Jack and Welcome Zephyr Farrell. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cross Knob Hunters Club, Moorefield, W.Va. and the Gas Chromatography Society. He retired as a chemist from the Food and Drug Administration after 35 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Brett Farrell; two sons, Jack Dwight Farrell and wife, Nargiza of Beebe, Ark. and Andrew Lawson Farrell and wife Kelly of Silver Spring, Md.; a daughter, Jill Colleen Egbert and husband, Charles of Mendon, Vt.; children also of Judy Farrell of Bowie, Md.; two step-sons, Lawrence Paul Kroggel of Cookville, Tenn. and David Frederick Kroggel of Strasburg; four step-daughters, Linda Marie Bouchelle of Havre-De Grace, Md., Karen Claire Ferg of Atlanta, Ga., Deborah Katherine Kaser of Rockville, Md. and Kristie Joan Dixon of Greesboro, N.C.; a brother, Howard Cowen and wife, Wynette of Pacific Grove, Calif.; two sisters, Louise Fichter of Del Ray Oaks, Calif. and Colleen McEwan and husband, John of Seaside, Calif.; eight grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild; and a niece, Heather Fichter.

A funeral service was conducted on Monday, May 11, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Strasburg with the Rev. Richard J. Goeres and Mrs. Sonya W. Giersch officiating. Entombment followed at the Panorama Memorial Gardens in Warren County.

Memorials contributions may be made to the Humane Society or the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

Jack Calvin Will
(May 14, 1926 - March 22, 2013)

Jack Calvin Will, 86, of New Market, died March 22, 2013 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

He was born May 14, 1926 in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Clarence R. and Ada B. Will.

He was a farmer and owner of Will Brothers Peach Orchard. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII on the U.S.S. Guam CB2 and was a Seaman 1st Class. He was a member of VFW Post 2447 and American Legion Post 166.

He graduated from New Market High School and was a member of St. Lukes United Church of Christ in Timberville.

On May 18, 1962 he married the former Louie Zirkle, who survives.

Jack was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Pastor’s Joel Walkley, Jeff Sonafelt, and John Yeich will conduct a graveside service Tuesday 1 PM at the St. Lukes U.C.C. cemetery.

There will be no visitation and the casket will be closed. Friends may stop by the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway to sign the guest book.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Hahn Cancer Center at RMH, 2008 Health Campus Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 or St.Lukes United Church of Christ, 613 N. Mountain Rd. Timberville, VA 22853.

Thelma Bernhard

Thelma Mae Bernhard, 62, of Grottoes, died Sunday, May 18, 2008, in Ocean City, Md.

Mrs. Bernhard was born Sept. 3, 1945, in Washington, D.C., and was the daughter of the late Charles and Florence Merriman Jenkins.

She was employed by Rockingham County Social Services and was an office clerk for 20 years.

On June 29, 1963, she married Robert 'Bob' W. Bernhard Sr., who survives.

She is also survived by a son, Robert 'Rob' W. Bernhard Jr. of Massanutten; a sister, Alma Jean Parker of College Park, Md.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held Friday, May 23, at Cedar Hill cemetery in Suitland, Md.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. The casket will be closed.

Madelyn Catherine Long Fleming

MOUNT JACKSON - Madelyn Catherine Long Fleming, 97, passed away on Sunday May 10, 2009, at the Skyline Nursing Home in Woodstock.

Mrs. Fleming was born in Mount Jackson on Sept. 28, 1911, and was a daughter of the late Homer Allen Long, Sr. and Margaret Alice Barton Long. She was the wife of the late Carl Washington Fleming, Sr. She was employed by Bowman's Apple Products Company, Inc. for 18 years. She was a member of Pleasant View Church of the Brethren and attended Walkers Chapel Church of the Brethren for many years.

She is survived by a son, Thomas R. Fleming and wife, Ann of Mount Jackson; a daughter, Helen Peggy Fleming Hawkins and husband Carroll L. of Woodstock; a daughter-in-law, Maryjean Fleming of New Market; four brothers, John Long of Bridgewater, C.W. Jim Long and Harry Long both of New Market, Wayne Long of Timberville; a sister, Louise Narin of New Market; six grandchildren, Sandra Hawkins Howard and husband Ben, Carl David Fleming and Denzel Anewalt, Zoe Fleming Dellinger and husband Stephen, Randy Hawkins and fiance Joyce, Patricia Fleming Combs and husband Bryan, Stephen Fleming and wife Elizabeth; twelve great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; five step-great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Carl W. Fleming, Jr., a grandson, Donald Fleming, two brothers, Hoyle Long, Sr. and Homer Long, Jr. and a sister, Phyllis Hughes.

A graveside service was held on Thursday, May 14, at the Mount Jackson cemetery with the Rev. Cecil Haycock and the Rev. Robert Houts officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Jackson Rescue and Fire Department, P.O. Box 251, Mount Jackson, Va. 22842, Skyline Terrace Resident Fund, P.O. Box 558, Woodstock, Va. 22664 or charity of one's choice.

Milton Armstrong

Milton "Lee" Armstrong, 88, of Summerfield, Fla., died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at Tuscany House in Summerfield, Fla.

Mr. Armstrong was born Jan. 19, 1920, in Highland County and was the son of the late Harman and Almerta Jack Armstrong.

He was a longtime resident of Charlottesville and Stuarts Draft. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a Charlottesville police officer and had owned a painting contract company. He retired to Florida in 2003.

His first wife, Elizabeth Siever, preceded him in death.

His wife of 30 years, Lee Nell Armstrong, survives. Also surviving are a sister, Phyllis Cox of Charlottesville, a stepdaughter, Betty L. Herndon, several nephews and one niece.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Woodbine cemetery in Harrisonburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Marion County Hospice, Tuscany House, P.O. Box 4860, Ocala, FL 34478-4860.

Sherry Grandle

Sherry Lynn Reedy Grandle, 54, of Mount Crawford, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Grandle was born on Jan. 19, 1954, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Norman and surviving Helen Simmons Reedy of North Carolina.

She worked as a homemaker and was an active member of the Sunrise Church of the Brethren in Harrisonburg. She also volunteered at the RMH Regional Cancer Center. All those that knew Sherry would agree she was a great person with a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious smile. She had no idea how many lives she had touched.

On June 9, 1972, she married Ted Grandle, who survives.

In addition to her husband, she is also survived by a daughter, Tiffany and husband, Addison Bowman of Dayton; two sisters, Carolyn Benner of Harrisonburg, and Linda Shifflett of North Carolina.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Kyger Funeral Home with Rev. J.D. Glick officiating. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at the Joshua Wilton House from noon until 4 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the RMH Regional Cancer Center, 100 E. Grace St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801, the American Cancer Society, 1920-H Medical Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801, or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

John Willis Furr

WOODSTOCK - John Willis Furr, 52, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at his home in Woodstock.

Mr. Furr was born Oct. 8, 1956, in Washington, D.C., and was a son of the late James and Nellie Moore Furr. He was a licensed tree expert, farm manager and horse trainer.

He is survived by three daughters; two sons; a brother and two grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date on the family farm.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Valley Funeral Service in Edinburg.

Maxine Hicks-Arthur

GWYNN - Maxine Hicks-Arthur, 93, formerly of New Market, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2009, at her home.

A funeral service was conducted on Thursday, May 14, at the New Market Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Arrangements were handled by the Theis Funeral Home in New Market.

Richard L. Hite

FLUVANNA COUNTY - Richard L. Hite, 90, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2009.

Mr. Hite was born on Sept. 16, 1918, in Edinburg and was a son of M. Lloyd and Anna Mary Fravel Hite; a sister, Anna Lee Van Buren; and a brother, Joe E. Hite. He was a World War II veteran. Upon his discharge from the Army, he joined the C & P, now Verizon Telephone Co. with assignments in Winchester, Culpeper, Norfolk and Richmond. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 2447 Edinburg, American Legion Post 0199 Woodstock, West Central Optimist Club of Richmond, Telephone Pioneers, and Richmond Senior and Retired Volunteers Program.

He is survived by his wife, Imogene S. Hite; daughter, Sharyon Hite Whitlow; son, Richard L. Hite, II; three grandchildren, Jennifer Whitlow Hasher, Melanie Whitlow and A.C. Whitlow, Jr.; one great-grandson, Peyton Hasher; and one sister, Hilda Hite Ziegler.

A graveside service was held at the Westhampton Memorial Park.

Betty Lee Cave Kagey Nonnemacher

NEW MARKET - Betty Lee Cave Kagey Nonnemacher, 63, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.

There are no services planned.

Arrangements were handled by the Theis Funeral Home in New Market.

Lula Bell Virginia Crider Dove
(June 21, 1940 - June 1, 2013)

Lula Bell Virginia Crider Dove, 72, of Bergton, VA died June 1, 2013 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born June 21, 1940 in Criders, VA, and was a daughter of the late Jesse M. and Martha Jane Delawder Crider.

She worked at National Fruit and Produce before retiring. She attended the Mennonite Church, and Bergton Gospel Center.

On June 4, 1958 she married Eugene Stanley Dove, who preceded her in death October 22, 2008.

Surviving are two sisters, Joann Frank of Singers Glen, Catherine Stout of Mathias, WV; three brothers, Benjamin “Jim” Crider of Harrisonburg, Franklin Lee Crider of Broadway, Freddie Crider of Singers Glen; two half brothers, Larry and Leonard Crider, both of Criders; a number of nieces and nephews.

Rev. Mike Shenk will conduct a graveside service 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at Perry Moyer Memorial cemetery in Bergton.

Friends may call anytime at the Grandle Funeral Home in Broadway.
