Herman Thomas Payne

EDINBURG - Herman Thomas Payne, 80, went home to his Dear Heavenly Father on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008. He passed peacefully at home with his dog, Jelly by his side.

Mr. Payne was born Jan. 31, 1928, in Round Hill, son of the late Carlton Thomas and Mae Estelle Payne. He was an Army veteran serving as an MP in the Second Armed Division. He was employed with Safeway for 33 years retiring as the Woodstock Store Manager in 1984. He was a farmer and operated Green Thumb Vegetable Garden.

He was a founding member of Vienna Baptist Church and spent many active years at Wakeman's Grove Church of the Brethren. He was a member of Massanutten Antique Tractor Club, Edinburg Shell Station Liar's Club, Charlie's Harley's and organized the Retired Safeway Valley Breakfast Club. He was a former member of the Rockingham Kiwanis Club and Woodstock Lions Club.

He loved his God, his family, his friends and his animals with a passion, and lived each day to the fullest with thankfulness and enthusiasm. Today he rides the trails of Heaven. His beloved wife, Vivian Eleanor Payne and his brother, Carlton J. Payne preceded him to Heaven.

He is survived by six children: Steven C. Payne and wife, Gail of Edinburg, Gayle P. Shaffer and husband, Steve of Conicville, Tina M. Starling and husband, Wade of Woodstock, Bryan K. Baker and his companion, Russ Reopell of Fairfax Station, Julie P. Bowers and husband, Scott of Edinburg and Ellen P. Kern and husband, Steve of Strasburg; his aunt, Helen P. Cornwell of Winchester; Lillie K. Payne of Strasburg, mother of four of his children; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating Herman's life will be held Thursday, Dec. 18 at 11 a.m. at Wakeman's Grove Church of the Brethren in Edinburg. The Reverend Jim Hardenbrook will officiate. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 17 from 7-9 p.m. at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Laura Middleton Rutz

STRASBURG - Laura Middleton Rutz, 86, passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, surrounded by her family at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital in Woodstock.

Mrs. Rutz was born in Strasburg, on Jan. 28, 1922, daughter of the late Charles William and Nellie Catherine Middleton. She was a member of the Strasburg Presbyterian Church for over sixty years. She was instrumental in keeping the Bethel Chapel Church open for special services until its final closure. She retired from Aileen, where she worked for over thirty years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Houston "Booty" Rutz, Jr., two daughters, Judy Ann Rutz, and Sarah Jane Graw, a sister Alice Palmer, and a brother, Amos Middleton.

Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Kay Ferguson and husband, Paul William of Lady Lake, Fla.; a son, Charles William Rutz and wife Anna Lee of Strasburg; eight grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She also survived by two brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, and a number of nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec.15, at the Strasburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Howard officiating. Burial followed in the Fishers Hill cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Strasburg Presbyterian Church, 325 S. Holliday Street, Strasburg, VA 22657.

Nellie Spiggle

NEW MARKET - Nellie Elizabeth Spiggle, 93, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 25, 1915, in Woodstock, daughter of the late Charles M. and Emma Sheetz Clem. She was wife of the late Melvin Lawrence Spiggle.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary Hypes of Charlottesville, Reva Ferrell of Kingsport, Tenn., and Lynn Spiggle of New Market; a son, Charles T. Spiggle of Timberville; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Mount Jackson cemetery by the Rev. Louie Shafer.

Hilda Ambrose

MOUNT JACKSON - Hilda Lee Ambrose, 88, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Ambrose was born Dec. 31, 1919, in Edinburg, daughter of the late Vernon Raymond and Clara Ellen Weatherholtz Bowers. She was a graduate of Triplett High School and member of Mt. Jackson United Methodist Church. She was wife of the late Joseph Moore Ambrose.

Surviving are two sons, Gary Moore Ambrose of Mt. Crawford and Larry Lee Ambrose of Mount Jackson; and two grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Friday, Oct. 3, at Mount Jackson United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ken DeWitt. Burial was in Mount Jackson cemetery.

William Edmonds

HARRISONBURG - William Fred Edmonds, 59, formerly of New Market, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Edmonds was born Feb. 13, 1949, in Wythe County, son of the late William Laramie and Virginia Smith Edmonds. He was a Navy veteran and a retired landscaper.

Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Bailey of Raleigh, N.C., and Betsy Edmonds of Bridgewater; two sons, Aaron Edmonds of West Virginia and Seth Edmonds of Bridgewater; a brother, Jack Edmonds of Athens, Ga.; a sister, Vicki Edmonds of Henderson, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements handled by Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market.

Goldie Elliott

STRASBURG - Goldie Almeda Elliott, 82, died Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center in Winchester.

She was born April 4, 1926, in Carlisle, Pa., daughter of Charles and Ida Paxon Conard. She retired from Country Cookin Retaurant in Winchester after working 60 years as a waitress in the Winchester area. She was wife of the late Rosby W. Elliott.

Surviving are three sons, William Charles Elliott of El Paso, Texas, Daniel Franklin Elliott of Winchester and Stoney Omer Elliott of Martinsburg, W.Va.; daughter, Beatrice Louretta Atkins of Strasburg; sister, Ruth Main of Elwood City, Pa.; four grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Monday at Jones Funeral Home in Winchester by Pastor Stephen Grimes. Burial was in Pine Grove cemetery.

Geneva Glotfelty

DELTONA, FLA. - Geneva R. Glotfelty, 78, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, in Deltona.

She was born Oct. 11, 1929, in Quicksburg, daughter of the late Jacob Silvious Sr. and Florence Farrow Silvious. She was wife of the late Hughie Eugene Glotfelty.

Surviving are a daughter, Judith Gannon of Deltona; two brothers, Jacob Silvious Jr. of Mount Jackson and Lorenzo Silvious of New Market; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Thursday, Oct. 2, at Solomon Lutheran Church in Forestville by Pastor Susan L. Lance. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Margaret Grandstaff

EDINBURG - Margaret Lee Grandstaff, 77, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008.

She was born Jan. 1, 1931, in Edinburg, daughter of the late Harry Lee and Elsie Coffman Grim. She was graduate of Edinburg High School and a member of Union Forge United Methodist Church. She was wife of the late Richard "Johnny" Grandstaff.

Surviving are a son, Jerry Grandstaff of Timberville; three daughters, Gloria Hollar of Edinburg, Beverly Richard of Elgin, S.C., and Penny Dingess of Stephens City; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

The funeral was conducted Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Union Forge United Methodist Church by the Revs. Earl Painter and Robert Berghuis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Donald Louderback

FRONT ROYAL - Donald Earl Louderback, 63, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at his residence.

He was born on July 3, 1945, to the late Earl and Charlotte Louderback in Page County. He retired from Dulles Airport where he was a maintance tech and had also worked at Avtex Fibers.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Laing Louderback; one brother, Jerry Louderback and wife Karen of Strasburg; a nephew, Brian E. Louderback of Centreville; four stepchildren, Tony Laing Jr., Judy Laing Bowman and husband Steve of Front Royal, Diane Clanton and husband Jeremy of Strasburg, Michael Laing and wife Daneya of Fort Valley; and eighteen stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Louderback.

A memorial service was conducted on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal by Pastor Larry Miller.

Maddox Funeral Home of Front Royal handled the arrangements.

Fayetta Malone-Wilkins

TOMS BROOK - Fayetta Pearl “Fay” Malone-Wilkins, 75, went to be with our Lord on Monday, Sept. 29, 2008.

Mrs. Wilkins was born on Aug. 23, 1933, in Strasburg, a daughter of Elsie L. Plaugher Malone and the late John R. Malone. She was the wife of the late Elmer R. Wilkins. She retired from Rocco Farm Foods in 1993. She was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Strasburg.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Malone; a sister, Margaret Wilkins; a brother, Robert Malone.

Surviving with her mother are three daughters, Connie Malone, Catherine Beydler and husband Roger, all of Strasburg and Thelma Miller and husband Wayne of Maurertown; a daughter-in-law, Nellie Malone of Melrose, Fla.; a sister Kathleen Shipe of Strasburg; two brothers, Donnie Malone and Bill Malone, both of Strasburg; six grandchildren, Sondra Ritenour, Suzanne Thorne, Jacob Beydler, Jason Miller, Michelle Miller and Richie Byard; and six great-grandchildren.

The service was conducted Friday, Oct. 3, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, by the Rev. James Baseler. Burial was in the St. Stephen cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

James W. McCray

MOUNT SOLON - James William “Jim” McCray, 60, died Monday Sept. 29, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Hot Springs on Dec. 29, 1947, son of the late Joseph and Jane McCray. He had been employed at Ethan Allen for 40 years.

He also worked briefly at RR Donnelley. He was a member of the First Assembly of God in Harrisonburg. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

On Sept. 2, 1966, Jim was united in marriage to Nancy Ann Senger McCray, who survives. Also surviving are a son, James “Jamie” W. McCray Jr. of Woodbridge; stepsister, Ellen Staubus of Mount Solon; two half brothers, Wayne McCray of Waynesboro, David McCray of Shenandoah County; and a brother, Edward McCray of Michigan.

A funeral service was conducted at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, Thursday, Oct. 2, by Rev. Jeffrey B. Ferguson .

Memorial contributions may be made to RMH Cancer Center, 100 Grace St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801; the American Cancer Society, 1920-H Medical Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801; or to a charity of choice.

Sarah Salmon

HARRISONBURG - Sarah Frances Salmon, 78, died on Sept. 28, 2008, at her home.

She was born on April 23, 1930, in Harrisonburg, daughter of the late Seymour and Frances Curry Soloman.

She moved back to Harrisonburg from New Jersey 20 years ago.

She did private nursing in New York and was a CNA at Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community when she retired.

She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Harrisonburg. On March 21, 1981, she married Vivian Salmon, who preceded her in death on Oct. 10, 2002. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Elinor Thomas, and a brother, James Curry.

She is survived by two daughters, Terry Jnolewis and husband, Anthony, of Brownstown, Mich., Norma “Paulette” Puryear and husband Melvin of Roselle, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Julie Curry, Stephanie Waters, Arlene Deas, Kevin Scott, Brandis Puryear, Antione Scott, and Chancy Scott; 12 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy White of Life Care Center in New Market, Barbara Ann Brock of Harrisonburg; one brother, Seymour Soloman Jr. of Grottoes; sister-in-law, Peggy Curry of Harrisonburg; and numerous nieces and nephews

A memorial service was conducted Friday, Oct. 3, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, by Brother Lee Smith. Private burial was in Newtown cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1920-H Medical Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
