Noah Griffin Blough

PETERSBURG - Noah Griffin Blough, 24, died Friday, June 6, 2008, of accidental drowning in the Appomattox River.

Mr. Blough was born Jan. 10, 1984, son of Robin M. and Sandra Kidd Blough of Star Tannery, Frederick County. Noah was a 2002 graduate of Sherando High School in Stephens City and had worked at the Sunnyside Food Lion.

Surviving with his parents are three brothers, Josiah Blough and wife Stephanie of Strasburg, Gene Blough of Alexandria, Carl Moravitz and wife Delilah of Fairfax; seven sisters, Kate Blough of Frederick County, Tina Hildreth and husband Jasper of Lilesville, N.C., Gina Duncan and husband Daniel of Ledbetter, Ky., Jennifer Rossi of Largo, Fla., Melissa Stone of Kosovo, Sandra Linsmayer and husband Eddie of Stafford, Judy Bobbitt and husband Jim of Manassas; and his maternal grandmother, Sylvia Birch Kidd of Charlottesville.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Carl Moravitz officiating. Interment will be in Gainesboro cemetery, Gainesboro.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Judith L. Phillips

Judith Louise Phillips, 75, of Bridgewater, passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Judith was born in Augusta County on May 25, 1936, and was the daughter of the late Russell Ernest and Mattie Lucille (Howdyshell) Huffer.

She retired from C&P Telephone Co. after 24 years of service and was a member of Parnassus United Methodist Church. In her later years, she attended Bridgewater United Methodist Church.

She was united in marriage to Donald Phillips, who survives.

In addition to her husband, Judith is survived by a son, Larry Franklin Garber of Mount Solon; a sister, Mary Frances Lambert of Charlottesville; a special friend, Geraldine Cook; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Homer Franklin “Buddy” Garber; two brothers, Robert S. Huffer and Paul R. Huffer; a sister-in-law, Ellen S. “Ann” Huffer; and a nephew, Robert D. Huffer.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

A private graveside service will be held at Parnassus United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. James M. Tongue officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 420 Neff Ave., Suite 210, Harrisonburg, VA 22801, or the American Heart Association, 3025 Berkmar Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Jason Vaughn Fulk Sr.

FULKS RUN - Jason Vaughn Fulk Sr., 86, died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at Life Care Center in New Market.

Mr. Fulk was born June 14, 1921, in Fulks Run, son of the late Clarence C. and Edna Bare Fulk. He was a farmer and member of Mount Carmel United Brethren in Christ Church in Fulks Run. He was an Army veteran of World War II and member of the VFW.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Ann Baugher of Sunrise, Fla.; four sons, Jason V. Fulk Jr. of New Market, Wayne Fulk of Troy, Carter Fulk and Charlie Fulk, both of Broadway; sister; Avis Meredith of Staunton; brother, Gary Fulk of Fulks Run; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.

The Rev. Johnny Fulk conducted a graveside service Sunday, June 8, at Mount Grove cemetery in Fulks Run.

Memorials may be made to Mount Carmel United Brethren in Christ Church, 11466 Brocks Gap Road, Fulks Run, VA 22830.

Carl Eugene Gladwell

Carl Eugene Gladwell, 59, a resident of Harrisonburg, passed away Oct. 17, 2011.

The family will receive friends at the McMullen Funeral Home from 10 until 11 a.m. Friday. A graveside service will follow at Clover Hill cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be sent to McMullen Funeral Home, 5784 Greenmount Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22802, to help with burial expenses.

Dorothy Page Hynes

MOUNT JACKSON - Dorothy Page Hynes, 88, died Monday, June 9, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Hynes was born Aug. 18, 1919, in Mount Jackson, daughter of the late Franklin Hickman and Dorothy Page Wissler. She was member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Mount Jackson.

She was married Nov. 25, 1942, to Edgar Loudoun Hynes Jr., who preceded her in death Feb. 7, 1978.

Surviving are four daughters, Dorothy Page Sullenberger of Orange, Caroline Byrd Emswiler of Gladstone, Rosemary Moore Wallinger of Mount Jackson and Elizabeth Payne Tillson of Mechanicsville; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at Mount Jackson cemetery with the Rev. Webster Gibson officiating.

The family will receive friends at Springmeadow, 4711 Wissler Road, Mount Jackson.

Memorial donations may be made to Rockingham Memorial Hospital Hospice, 235 Cantrell Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA 22801; or Shenandoah County Humane Society, 341 Landfill Road, Edinburg, VA 22824.

Doris R. Lewis

Doris R. Lewis, 84, of Rexville, N.Y., died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, in her home surrounded by her loving family. Born March 6, 1927, at home in Independence, N.Y., she was the daughter of Raymond and Leeta Wheaton Rogers.

On Oct. 16, 1943, in Andover, N.Y., she married Robert F. Lewis, who survives. Mrs. Lewis and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm for many years. She was a dedicated employee of the Northern Tier Children’s Home Thrift Store in Genesee (the Genesee Mall) for 37 years, retiring in 2010. She was a member of the West Union Mennonite Church. She enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, and spending time with her family.

Doris had a special smile, an unwavering faith, a strong work ethic, and tremendous character. She was a loving and dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family and her love of the Lord are only part of the amazing legacy she leaves behind.

Surviving besides her husband, Robert, are five sons, Larry (Carol) Lewis, Lyle (Donalea) Lewis, Alan Lewis, Paul Lewis, all of Rexville, and Jerry (Judy) Lewis of Whitesville, N.Y.; six daughters, Carol (George) Whitsell of Rexville, Beverly (Danny) Prutsman of Harrisonburg, Va., Cathy (Paul) Samuell of Hickory, N.C., Anita (Gerald) Heatwole of McGaheysville, Va., Charlene (Dale) Neuenschwander of Lancaster, Pa., and Sue (Norm) Olds of Andover, N.Y.; 39 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Maynard (Carolyn) Rogers and Raymond (Joan) Rogers, both of Silver Springs, N.Y.; two sisters, June Stadelman of Orlando, Fla., and Helen Hall of Greenwood, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a grandson, Kenneth Lewis, and a sister, Arlene Spicer.

Friends may call Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the West Union Mennonite Church, 1459 County Route 84, Rexville, NY 14877, where funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. Pastor Robert Walters will officiate.

Burial will be in Whitesville Rural cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Union Mennonite Church Food Pantry, 1459 CR 84, Rexville, NY 14877, or the Whitesville Public Library, Whitesville, NY 14897.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Olney Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Ulysses, Pa.

Robert Breeden

Funeral services for Robert Lee Breeden, 64, of McGaheysville, will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2008, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton. The Rev. Nona F. Allen will conduct the service. Burial will follow in the Mount Olivet cemetery in McGaheysville. Mr. Breeden died April 20, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Breeden was born July 25, 1943, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Henry Wilson and Hettie Hensley Breeden.

He was a welder at Dunham Bush before retiring and was a member of Hensley's United Methodist Church in the Thoroughfare area of Elkton. He enjoyed gardening and working on outdoor projects.

Mr. Breeden is survived by two daughters, Loretta A. Breeden of Austell, Ga., and Maureen M. (Marlene) Breeden of Grottoes; two brothers, Arnold Wayne Breeden and Bernard W. Breeden, both of Elkton; five sisters, Geraldine Wyant, Doris Knott, Roxanna Taylor, all of Elkton, Alma Jean Sullivan of Linville and Peggy Plunk of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jonathan (PJ) Cubbage, Spencer Cubbage, Jeremy Cubbage and Jessica Breeden. Mr. Breeden was also preceded in death by a brother, Elvin Breeden, and a sister, Shelia Breeden Boyd.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

Gerald Howard Kidwell

STRASBURG - Gerald Howard Kidwell, 86, passed away May 31, 2008, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Kidwell was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Preston County, W.Va., son of the late Charles H. and Margery Braham Kidwell. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, member of Strasburg Christian Church and was a former member of the board of directors of Marathon Bank. After retiring from the federal government, he enjoyed his farming and raising black Angus cattle.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynn Dell Kidwell; five sisters, Maxine Maize, Wanda Frankos, Nancy Minor, Virginia Quertinmont and Margaret A. Kidwell; and two brothers, Thomas H. Kidwell and Frank Kidwell.

Surviving are his loving wife, Hazel Ruth Hastins Kidwell of Strasburg; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted Friday, June 6, at Stover Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Geneal Wilson. Entombment followed in Shenandoah Memorial Gardens, Winchester.

Glenda 'Grandma' McClintock

WINCHESTER - Glenda “Grandma” McClintock, 83, left us to be with our Lord on June 4, 2008. She passed away at her daughter Marian’s home with family by her side. She was always known for her smile, kind words, and “God Bless” for everyone.

While Glenda drove a mail truck from Winchester to Woodstock seven days a week, twice daily for 36 years, people recognized her from just being in the mail truck on the highway. They would blow their horn and wave, giving her the name “the mail lady.” She considered herself blessed and, because of this, was able to extend her family to many in the postal department and to the many friends made along the way.

Waiting for “Grandma” to pass through the gates of heaven were husband Bus; children, Douglas Anderson and Linda Bennett; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are twin daughters, Marian LaRue and Sharon Oster; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; along with all those she became an honorary grandmother.

A funeral service was held Sunday, June 8, at Jones Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jeremy Sullivan. Burial followed in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be sent to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601.

Howard L. Morris

GLENVILLE, W.VA. - Howard L. Morris, 73, died May 30, 2008, at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, W.Va.

Mr. Morris was born Nov. 19, 1934, in Nicholas County, W.Va., son of the late Virgil O. and Lola Lewis Morris. He was a retired tile and marble setter for Franklin Tile-Marble. He was a member of Sand Fork Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Laura Whitley Morris; his children, Teresa Kelley of Fort Valley, Howard Morris Jr. of Glenville, Veasey Morris of Jessup, Ga., Phillip Morris and Karen Robinson, both of Front Royal; brother, Herbert Morris of Front Royal; two sisters, Betty Brooks of Craigsville, W.Va., and Virginia Proctor of Summersville, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A service was held for family and friends on the traditional Memorial Day weekend.

Arrangements handled by Ellyson Mortuary in Glenville.

Charles Eugene 'Buzzy' Vance Sr.

STAR TANNERY - Charles Eugene “Buzzy” Vance Sr., 74, died Saturday, June 7, 2008, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Winchester.

Mr. Vance was born Dec. 31, 1933, at Vance’s Cove, son of the late Nan Vance.

Surviving are a son, Charles E. “Peanut” Vance Jr. of Star Tannery; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

The funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Gravel Springs Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Gravel Springs cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David Flemings, Larry McIlwee, Terry Graham, Ron Paul, Sonny Vance, Mike Cooper, Elmer Blanchfield and Bob Bowley.

Arrangements handled by Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Christina Marie Vest

HARRISONBURG - Christina Marie Vest, 31, died Friday, June 6, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Vest was born Nov. 20, 1976, in Winchester, daughter of George “Rusty” Coleman of Timberville and Debra Kay Loy of Lakeland, Fla. She was a graduate of Harrisonburg High School. She was the executive housekeeper for Sheriton Inn in Harrisonburg.

Surviving with her parents are her husband, Curtis Vest; a daughter, Alexandra Faye Vest, at home; sister, Angela Edwards of Woodstock; and three brothers, Bobby Gosney of Mount Jackson, Eric Coleman of Harrisonburg and Travis Coleman of Timberville.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Emmanuel Lutheran cemetery in New Market.

Arrangements handled by Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market.
