Jean Kiser Fike
(March 27, 1930 - October 24, 2011)

Jean Kiser Fike, 81, of Bridgewater, passed away Monday, October 24, 2011 at the Bridgewater Home.

She was born in Montezuma, March 27, 1930; she was the daughter of the late Bulfin and Ruth (Early) Kiser.

Jean graduated from Bridgewater College. She worked as a teacher in the Illinois School System and as an office assistant to the Director of continuing education at Elizabethtown College and an office assistant to the Dean at Juniata College, both in Pennsylvania

She was a member of Bridgewater Church of the Brethren.

Jean was united in marriage September 10, 1949 to Earle William Fike, Jr., who survives.

She is also survived by a daughter, Dwynn Helms and husband Charles of Valencia, CA; two sons Joseph E. Fike and wife Nancy of Marietta, GA; Jon P. Fike and wife Nell of Lancaster, PA; two sisters, Elaine Shank and husband Bobby of Bridgewater; Janice Eckard of Port Republic, and a brother, Dwayne Kiser and wife Dawn of Bridgewater. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Allyn Ryder and husband Josh, Ashley Helms, Jessica Fike, Lauren Fike and Alex Fike; two great grandchildren, Finley Grace & Isaac Michael Ryder.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Norlyn Kiser and a brother-in-law James Eckard.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Friday, October 28, 2011, at Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, with Rev. Jeffery Carr officiating.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 27, 2011, 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

Margaret Sudlow

STRASBURG - Margaret Jean Sudlow, 76, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mrs. Sudlow was born Feb. 5, 1931, in Williamsport, Pa., daughter of the late Corbin and Elizabeth Ann Little Lewis. She was married to Frank H. Sudlow.

Surviving are five sons, David Sudlow and Keith Sudlow, both of Strasburg, Richard Sudlow of Romney, W.Va., Phillip Sudlow of Arlington and Bruce Sudlow of Churchville, Pa.; two brothers, Alfred Lewis of California and Don Little of Florida; 13 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral service was conducted Saturday, Oct. 6, at Augusta United Methodist Church, Augusta, W.Va., by Pastor Larry Morrison. Burial was in Augusta cemetery.

Mary Sweitzer

EDINBURG - Mary Frances 'Bebe' Sweitzer, 79, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Sweitzer was born March 8, 1928, in Columbia Furnace, daughter of the late Charles C. Mantz and Rachael K. Fadely Mantz. She was a housewife and member of Bethel Lutheran Church and the Shenandoah County Home Demonstration Club.

Surviving are her husband, Barry J. Sweitzer; daughter, Jackie Pence of Woodstock; two sons, Mike Sweitzer of Richmond and Jody Sweitzer of Montpelier; sister, Betty N. Hollingsworth of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Tara Pence, Andy Pence and Michelle Swartz; one step-grandchild, Aidan Pence; and close friends, Freddie Frazier of Bridgewater and Nancy Fadely of Woodstock.

Pastor Kenn Nilsen will conduct the funeral service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Hamburg. A private burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call at the Sweitzer home at any time.

Memorial donations may be made to the Woodstock Rescue Squad or a charity of choice.

Edward Stewart Kirsch
(March 13, 1927 - October 18, 2011)

U.S. Veteran - Edward Stewart Kirsch, 84, of Bridgewater, VA, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at his home.

Ed was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on March 13, 1927, and was a son of the late John and Merle (Loh) Kirsch.

He retired from Dunhan-Bush, and had served in the U.S. Navy during WW II.

On August 7, 1948, he was united in marriage to Rae E. Kirsch , who survives.

In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by two daughters, Lynn Shively of Englewood, OH, and Cheryl Rieman of Bridgewater; five sons, Brad Kirsch of Lake Bay, WA, Eric Kirsch of Maryville, TN, Neil Kirsch of Bridgewater, Mitch Kirsch of Harrisonburg, and Doug Kirsch of Roanoke. He is also survived by 14 grandchildrren.

A memorial service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

Susan Tanner

FRONT ROYAL - Susan Ann Wise Tanner, 52, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007.

Mrs. Tanner was born June 18, 1955, in Calhoun County, W.Va., daughter of the late Sherman and Sarah Jane Wise.

Surviving are three daughters, Angel Marston of New Market, Pamela Graham and Holly Richmond, both of Middletown; six sisters, Ted Harris, Katie Westfall, Marie Tanner, Barb Bush, Peggy Tanner and Helen Springston, all of Spencer; three brothers, Robert Wise of Moundsville, W.Va., Ivan Wise and David Wise, both of Spencer; and five grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted Thursday, Oct. 4, at Taylor-Vandale Funeral in Spencer by the Rev. Randy Whited. Burial was in Mount Olive cemetery.

Lawrence Whitmer, Sr.

HERNDON - Lawrence A. Whitmer, Sr., 78, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Whitmer was born on Nov. 3, 1928, in Washington, D.C., son of the late Vernon and Margaret Whitmer of Timberville. He worked his whole career as a carpenter/contractor and locksmith before retiring. He was also a member of Wesleyan Church, where he served in many capacities.

Mr. Whitmer was the beloved husband of 57 years of Jean Knupp Whitmer; loving and devoted father of Linda Brown (Roger) of Herndon, Cathy Schupbach (Gregory) of Falls Church, Karen Cobb (Elwyn) of Ashburn, Lawrence Whitmer, Jr. (Becki) of Sterling; brother of Walter Whitmer and Ralph Whitmer, the late James V. Whitmer and Gladys Layman; proud grandfather of Erin Bell, Christy Mickles, Elaine Brown, Christopher Schupbach, Rachel and Shelby Whitmer, Jenny Cable; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Chestnut Grove cemetery in Herndon.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wesleyan Church, P.O. Box 1471, Herndon, VA 20172.

Lucy Parsons Baker

MAURERTOWN - Lucy Parsons Baker, 90, formerly of Winchester, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Miss Baker was born in 1917, in Virginia City, Minn., daughter of the late Henry E. and Fanny Hazelton Baker. She was a graduate of Ferrum Junior College and Emory and Henry College. She was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a Tech 4 from 1944 to 1946. She was a nurse’s aide at many hospitals and was a member of First Baptist Church in Winchester, the Philia Sunday School Class, the Chancel Choir, and Singin’ Seniors.

She was the last surviving member of her family.

She was predeceased by a sister, Winnie Wallis; and brother, Henry E. Baker Jr.

A memorial service was conducted Friday, July 27, at First Baptist Church, by Pastor George Fletcher. Burial was private.

Memorials may be made to the Philia Sunday School Class, c/o First Baptist Church, 205 West Piccadilly St., Winchester, VA 22601.

Evelyn Virginia Funkhouser

EDINBURG - Evelyn Virginia Funkhouser, 78, died Sunday, July 29, 2007.

Mrs. Funkhouser was born April 27, 1929, in Front Royal, daughter of the late James and Lettie Harris Silveus. She was the wife of the late Paul Franklin Funkhouser.

Surviving are four sons, James Franklin Funkhouser of Fountain, Fla., Robert Elwood Silveus, Thomas Fletcher Funkhouser and Ernest Lee Funkhouser, all of Edinburg; three daughters, Mary Alice Atkins of Strasburg, Ruth Ellen Lear of Edinburg and Nancy Virginia Gonzalez of Toms Brook; two sisters, Ruby Malone of Woodstock and Pauline Funk of Front Royal; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock, with Pastor Dave Casto officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Church cemetery, Edinburg.

Carroll Bayliss Hawkins

MIDDLETOWN - Carroll Bayliss Hawkins, 97, died Sunday, July 29, 2007, in Woodstock.

Mr. Hawkins was born in 1910, in Frederick County, son of the late Harry O. and Annie B. Hawkins. He and his wife formerly owned and operated Hawkins Grocery in Marlboro, retiring after 38 years of operation. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Frederick County. He was a member of the Shenandoah Valley Gun Collectors, Izaak Walton League and volunteered at the Fish Hatchery in Leetown, W.Va. He was married for 62 years to the late Mary Elizabeth “Shorty” Carpenter Hawkins, who died June 3, 1998.

Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Anne “Ginny” Bowers and husband Doug of Strasburg; son, Robert “Bobby” Shade Hawkins and wife Mary Ann of Winchester; grandchild, Bobby Jo Hawkins of Winchester; and a great-grandchild, Grace Rae Elizabeth Hawkins of Winchester.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred E. “Millie” Hawkins; and brother, Clyde O. Hawkins.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Pastor Dough Bowers officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Patterson, Bobby Hawkins, Bobbie Jo Hawkins, Skip Dunlap, Rex Whitacre and Paul Dicks.

Barbara Elizabeth Mellette

MOUNT JACKSON - Barbara Elizabeth Mellette died Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at her home.

Mrs. Mellette was born in Shenandoah County, daughter of the late Nathaniel

and Mary “Rosie” Barb Beedle. She was a custodian for Shenandoah County Public Schools and attended Crossroads Baptist Bible Church, Hudson Crossroads.

Surviving are a daughter, Lorie Ann Mellette of Glasgow, Ky.; son, Larry David Mellette Jr. of Woodstock; two sisters, Hannah Helsley of Edinburg and Stella B. Barb of Basye; brother, Norman Beedle of Basye; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Friday, July 27, at Stoney Creek Church cemetery by the Rev. Olin Bailey.

Memorial contributions may be made to Stoney Creek Church cemetery Fund, 4749 Crooked Run Road, Mount Jackson, VA 22842.

Raymond Samuel “Fritz” Orebaugh

NEW MARKET - Raymond Samuel “Fritz” Orebaugh, 98, died Thursday, July 26, 2007 at Greenfield Senior Living of Woodstock, where he had been a patient since November of 2000.

Mr. Orebaugh was born May 10, 1909, in Rockingham County, son of the late Samuel and Pearl Fahrney Orebaugh. He was a prominent New Market businessman and civic leader. He was the retired owner and operator of Pikeway Motors in New Market, which he operated for many years. He was one of the original organizers and member of the New Market Rescue Squad and was instrumental in reorganizing the New Market Rebels baseball team after World War II. He was a former member of the New Market Town Council, former member of New Market Rotary Club having received the Paul Harris Award, a former member and past grand marshall of the Shrine Club in Luray and a former member of the Elks Lodge of Harrisonburg. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Timberville and was the husband of the late Mary Rupp Orebaugh.

Surviving are a son, Fritz F. Orebaugh of New Market; and daughter, Susan Nicholson of Atlanta, Ga.

A graveside service was conducted Saturday, July 28, at Saint Matthew’s cemetery, New Market, by the Rev. Don Smith.

Memorial contributions may be made to the New Market Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 399, New Market, VA; or New Market Fire Department, P. O. Box 245, New Market, VA 22844.
