Frances Pauline Hamman Brill

STRASBURG- Frances Pauline Hamman Brill, 86, died Friday, March 30, 2007, at Greenfield in Strasburg.

Mrs. Brill was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Fishers Hill, daughter of the late Ernest Irvin and Blanche Orndorff Hamman. She and her late husband, Harry Tilden “Brillo” Brill Sr., were co-owners and operators of Brill’s Grocery in Strasburg for 53 years. She was a life member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a member of the Women of ELCA.

Surviving are two sons, Berlin Bennett Brill of Strasburg and Harry Tilden Brill Jr. of Vienna; two daughters, Joyce Brill Rinker of Strasburg and Connie Brill Shorter of Johnson City, Tenn.; two sisters, Geneva Hamman Long of Winchester and Mary Jane Hamman McCardle of Laurel, Md.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Hamman Renner and Mildred Hamman Long.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday, April 1, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Strasburg, by the Rev. Dr. Richard J. Goeres and AIM Sonya W. Giersch. Burial was in Riverview cemetery, Strasburg.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 193 W. Washington St., Strasburg, VA 22657; or to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601.

Arrangements handled by Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Pearl Virginia Buchanan

NEW MARKET- Pearl Virginia Buchanan, 93, died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Life Care Center of New Market.

Mrs. Buchanan was born July 11, 1913, in Beaver, Pa., daughter of the late Wilmer David and Alberta Elizabeth Rhinelander Sisler. She was a member of Walker’s Chapel Church of the Brethren in Mount Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lawrence Frye and Charles J. Buchanan.

Surviving are her companion, Gaylon Ludwig; three daughters, Jane Mullins of Jenkins, Ky., Pauline Frye of Oregon and Patricia Kay Wood of Chantilly; four sons, David Frye of Hopewell, N.J., Jacob Frye of Arlington, James Tim Frye of New Market and Ray Frye of Harrisonburg; three stepdaughters, Mildred “Mickey” Good of Richmond, Clota Campbell and Rosalie Walker, both of New Market; sister, Nancy Lucas of Falls Church; two brothers, Irvin Sisler and Ben Sisler, both of New Market; 14 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Tuesday, April 3, at Dellinger Funeral Home, Mount Jackson, by the Rev. William L. Zirk. Burial followed in the Mount Jackson cemetery.

Darius Roland Dalton

STEPHENS CITY- Darius Roland Dalton, 80, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at Bon Air Home for the Elderly, Stephens City.

Mr. Dalton was born March 9, 1927, in Hillsville, son of the late William Lawson and Edith Lucretia Surratt Dalton. He was retired from Avtex Fibers Inc. after 45 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater.

Surviving are three brothers, William Martin Dalton of Alamogordo, N.M., and Stanley Carroll Dalton and James Wayne Dalton, both of Middletown.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Edith Marie Dalton; and brother, Franklin Paul Dalton.

A funeral service was conducted Monday, April 2, at Middletown Presbyterian Church by Dr. Richard Slider and the Rev. Deborah Dalton Dail. Burial was in Mount Carmel cemetery, Middletown, with military honors accorded by VFW Post 2123 Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601.

Mae Virginia Dunn

Mae Virginia Dunn, 87, of Tandem Health Care in Woodstock, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Mrs. Dunn was born June 8, 1919, daughter of the late William and Greta Ross Hardy. She was the wife of the late Roy Kenneth Dunn.

Surviving are her loving daughter, Joy Dyke and husband Charles “Henry” of Strasburg; two sons, Jay Dunn and wife Bonnie of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Walter Dunn and friend Darlene of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Margaret Funk of Sun City, Ariz., and Betty Smith of Hollywood, Fla.; a grandson; and two great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Fayette Dyke; and two sisters, Leonna Smoot and Ann Slonaker.

A funeral service was conducted Thursday, March 29, at St. Mathews Lutheran Church, Toms Brook, by Pastor John R. Yost and the Rev. James Baseler. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to a humane society.

Calvin Sylvester Ford

TIMBERVILLE- Calvin Sylvester Ford, 82, died Friday, March 30, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg.

Mr. Ford was born July 14, 1924, in Rockingham County, son of the late Robert and Lula Runion Ford. He retired as a truck driver for Heatwole’s Hatchery and attended Freelandia Bible Church, Broadway.

On Sept. 5, 1947, he married the former Lillian Hardey, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Linda Dove of Broadway and Louise Parks of Timberville; three sons, Rodney Ford of Edinburg, Berlin Ford of Timberville and Gary Ford of Broadway; a sister, Margie Price of Waynesboro; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Ted Hott conducted a memorial service Monday, April 2, at Grandle Funeral Home, Broadway. His body was cremated.

Margaret Windle George

EDINBURG- Margaret Windle George, 82, widow of Charles Robert George Jr., died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Front Royal.

Mrs. George was born Aug. 5, 1924, at Woodstock, daughter of the late Marvin and Lottie Wetzel George. She retired from Blue Bell Wrangler after 30 years of service. She was a member of Columbia Furnace United Methodist Church and Columbia Furnace Community Club. She enjoyed working with flowers, quilting, and working together with her husband on the farm.

She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Drucilla Windle; sister, Virginia Kingsley; and a brother, John Windle.

Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Bonnie and Richard Henry of Winchester; five sisters and their husbands, Janice and Eugene Fortna and Betty and George Evans, all of Annville, Pa., Rosalie and Glenn Waybright of Cleona, Pa., Drucilla and John Emrich and Jane and Frank Wampler, all of Lebanon, Pa.; and a brother, Franklin Windle of Myerstown, Pa.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock, with the Revs. Susan Michie-Brent and Brian Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset View Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Kurt George, Lowell Coffelt, Dick Sine, Eugene Fortna, Freddie Windle and Dickie Wetzel.

Raymond William Gochenour

Raymond William Gochenour, 85, of Woodstock, died Friday, March 30, 2007, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Gochenour was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Woodstock, son of the late Clarence L. and Minnie M. Wetzel Gochenour. He was a farmer and had been a construction superintendent for 40 years. He was a member of Mount Calvary United Church of Christ in Woodstock.

Surviving are his wife, Sallie Wetsel Gochenour; three brothers, Lee Gochneour, Elwood Gochenour and Linden Gochenour, all of Woodstock.

The funeral service was conducted Sunday, April 1, at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock, by the Rev. James Smith. Burial was in Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Calvary United Methodist Church, 1299 Sheetz Mill Road, Woodstock, VA; Woodstock Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 221, Woodstock, VA 22664; or a charity of choice.

Rhoda Lazell Hill

TOMS BROOK- Rhoda Lazell Hill, 86, formerly of Berryville, died Sunday, April 1, 2007.

Mrs. Hill was born June 20, 1920, in Columbus, Ga., daughter of the late John J. and Bessie B. Baucum Colvin. She was a retired machine operator for IBM in Washington, D.C. and a Baptist.

Surviving are a son, Billy J. Hill of Strasburg; sister, Pam Gonzalez of Olney, Md.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
All services were private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, VA 22601.

Maralyne Hurt Kidwell

FRONT ROYAL- Maralyne Hurt Kidwell, 75, died Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at Warren Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Kidwell was born Sept. 23, 1931, in Browntown, daughter of the late Frederick and Nannie Williams Hurt. She was a Sunday school teacher for the Cool Springs Church of God in Browntown.

Surviving are her husband Johnny Kidwell; two grandchildren, Shane and Shawn Kidwell; great-grandson, Johnny Kidwell; and sister, Corrine Garnett.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Robert, Doug and Barry Kidwell; and a brother, Lenny Hurt.

A graveside service was conducted Friday, April, 30, at Prospect Hill cemetery by the Rev. Dale Ramsey.

Frances Virginia Middleton

TIMBERVILLE- Frances Virginia Middleton, 78, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Middleton was born Jan. 4, 1929, in Mount Jackson, daughter of the late James Cletus and Anna Mary Hopewell Estep.

Surviving are a daughter, Terri Modlin of Fishersville; son, Dean Middleton of Richmond; brother, Leon Estep of Lavonia, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Dellinger Funeral Home, Mount Jackson, with the Rev. William Schmeissing officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Jackson cemetery.

Esther Cooper Moore

STAR TANNERY- Esther Cooper Moore, 88, died Friday, March 30, 2007, at her home.

Mrs. Moore was born March 30, 1919, in Star Tannery, daughter of the late Ernest Townes and Grace Rudolph Cooper. She was a Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Frederick County School System. She was a member of Gravel Springs Lutheran Church, serving on the church council, as a trustee and treasurer.

She was a charter member and past president of the Star Tannery Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and past president of the Northern Virginia Firefighters Association. She was the wife of the late Melvin Ormel Moore.

Surviving is a stepdaughter, Martha Mae Giles of Warrenton.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Gravel Springs Lutheran Church, Star Tannery, with the Rev. Lance Braun officiating. Burial, with military honors by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg, will follow in the Gravel Springs cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jack Colvin, Wayne Himelright, Ron Yentzer, Von Himelright, Billy Rudolph, and Ronald Hockman.

Memorials may be made to Gravel Springs Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 116, Star Tannery, VA; or Star Tannery Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, 311 Paddy’s Run, Star Tannery, VA 22654.
