Alfred Shirley Bradfield

Alfred Shirley Bradfield, of Newark, Del., passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at the age of 74.

Mr. Bradfield was born and raised in Woodstock, son of the late Garlan S. and Margaret M. Bradfield and has made Newark his home for the past 54 years. He was a longtime member of Elkton Church of God, and after retiring volunteered many hours at The Food Bank of Delaware. He worked as a machine operator and set-up man for Motor Wheel Corporation in Newark for 22 years until the plant was closed in 1981. He then worked in the shipping department at Avon, and Delaware Office Equipment. He retired from working in 1994.

Al will be dearly missed by his family: beloved wife of almost 50 years, Iva G.L. Bradfield; sons, Eugene R. Bradfield of Fair Hill, Md., and Jeffrey G. Bradfield of Newark; daughter, Elizabeth S. Luther and husband Dean of Anderson, S.C.; his six loving grandchildren, John, Kimberly, Alexander, Kathryn Bradfield and Eric and Jonathan Luther; brothers, Garlan L. Bradfield Jr. of Woodstock and Charles Bradfield of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a sister, Phyllis L. Wetzel of Woodstock.

Family and friends are invited to Al’s Life Celebration viewing and visitation with his family from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, and again on Friday, Jan. 19, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Beeson Funeral Home of Newark, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Fox Run.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.

Shawn "Skeeter" David Gray
(June 16, 1980 - September 21, 2012)

U.S. Veteran - Boatswain's Mate 1st Class, Shawn David “Skeeter” Gray, 32, of Norfolk, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2012 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

He was born in Hagerstown, MD on June 16, 1980, and was the son of William D. “Bill” and Patsy J. (Mines) Gray of Bridgewater.

As a veteran of “Operation Enduring Freedom” during the Gulf war, BM1 Gray served his country in the US Navy with “Courage, Honor and Commitment” for the past 14 years. He was currently stationed in Norfolk.

Surviving in addition to his parents is his fiancée, Krista L. Hale and son Cameron J. White both of Norfolk, three sons, Quentin D. Gray of Grottoes, Dakota B. Gray and Justin M. Gray, both of Norfolk; a sister, Jennifer Gray Ryan and husband Kolby of Oceanside, CA; grandmothers, Helen L. Mines of Clover Hill, and Rita A. Gray of Bridgewater; nieces, Shannon L. Garber, Autumn G. Garber, both of Mt. Sidney; and Kylee S. Ryan of Oceanside, CA; Numerous aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, James L. Mines and Walter W. Gray.

A service celebrating the life of BM1 Shawn “Skeeter” Gray will be held at Oakdale Park, Shelter #1 at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 6, 2012 with Rev. Jerry Smith officiating.

Clyde E. Burrell Sr.

WARREN COUNTY- Clyde E. Burrell Sr., 53, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mr. Burrell was born April 23, 1953, in Annapolis, Md., son of Charles Burrell and Minnie Bernice Dale Corder. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was president of Valley Fork Lift Services and a member of Strasburg Moose Lodge 403.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret V. Burrell; two daughters, Tracey M. Burrell of Front Royal and Angela Polk of Strasburg; son, Clyde E. Burrell Jr. of Strasburg; and two grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday, Jan. 14, at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, by the Rev. Rick Kerfoot. Burial was in Prospect Hill cemetery, Front Royal.

Alice M. Dinwiddie

Alice M. Dinwiddie, beloved mother, grandmother and great great-grandmother, passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at the glorious age of 96 years.

Mrs. Dinwiddie was born Jan. 15, 1910, to the late Oscar T. and Mary E. Houghton. She was married to the late Walter K. Dinwiddie. Alice and Walter lived in numerous locations in Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, Idaho and Virginia. After working for J.C. Penney for 28 years, they moved to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Following Walter’s death, Alice moved to Boise and subsequently to Woodstock to be near only daughter, Mariann Burress Shelton Burch and son-in-law Donald R. Burch.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Elmer, Boyd and Floyd; sisters, Virginia, Fern Poe, Mary Ellen Sanders; and son-in-law, James R. Shelton of Boise, Idaho.

Surviving are grandchildren, Randy Burress and wife Susan, Chris Scheer and children of Portland, Ron Burress and wife Jeanine; great-grandchildren, Jamie, Lindsay, Andrew and Katie; three step-granddaughters, Jean, Deborah and Becky Shelton; three stepsons and one stepdaughter in Virginia; one great great-grandson, Wyatt Hegstrom; three nephews in Monroe City, Mo., and their families; nephew, F.B. Houghton and family; J.W. Brown of Missouri and Mary Alice Findlay of Michigan.

Interment will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 20, by Wright Baker-Hill Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to Pierce Park Baptist Church, Boise, Idaho, or a charity of choice.

Gladys Mae Morris
(November 30, 1930 - September 12, 2012)

Gladys Mae Sweet Morris, 81, of Grottoes, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with aplastic anemia.

Gladys was born on November 30, 1930, and was a daughter of the late William W. and Una Lucy (Hutchens) Sweet.

She retired in 1992 from GE/Genicom in Waynesboro, and was a member of Grottoes Seventh Day Adventist Church.

On Decemeber 31, 1952, she was united in marriage to Leon Morris, who preceded her in death on December 12, 1992.

Gladys is survived by a daughter, Joyce Kimble and husband David of Barren Ridge; three sons, Michael Morris and wife Patricia of Grottoes, Donald Morris and wife Debra of Port Republic, and Richard Morris of Grottoes; a sister, Edith Stickley; and three brothers, Arther Sweet and wife Dot of Roanoke, William "Bud" Sweet and wife Joann of Stuarts Draft, and Harry Sweet and wife Lucy of NC; son-in-law, John Smith of Grottoes. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Brian Barker and wife Kelly, Jonathan Smith, and Aaron Smith; two step-grandchildren, Benjamin and Randi Kimble; great grandson, Derek Travis Barker; and twenty five foster grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by a daughter, Doris Ann Morris Smith; grandson, Derek Travis Barker; two sisters Elizabeth Mowbray, Lorene Early.

A funeral service will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Grottoes Seventh Day Adventist Church, with Rev. Roger Mace, Eugene Souder and Dale Long officiating. Burial will follow at Port Republic Mutual cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday, September 14, 2012 at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Virginia Blood Services.

Gene Autry Haines

STRASBURG- Gene Autry Haines, 67, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007, at the home of his son in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Haines was born Sept. 22, 1939, in High View, W.Va., son of the late Finley W. and Virginia Morris Haines. He was an auto body technician and a Navy veteran. He was a member of American Legion Post 0077 of Strasburg and VFW Post 2123 of Winchester.

Surviving are three sons, Larry E. Haines of Romney, W.Va., Wayne L. Haines of Titusville, Fla., and Steve A. Haines of Harrisonburg; daughter, Gloria D. Couch of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; four brothers, Richard Haines, Donnie Haines, and David Haines, all of Winchester, and Eugene Haines of Whitacre; three sisters, Frances Clark of Stephenson, Thelma Dellinger of Winchester and Dorothy Miller of Clearbrook; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest “Doll” Haines, Lester Haines and Walter Haines.

A private service was held.

Helen Louise Cooley Harrison

LYNCHBURG- Helen Louise Cooley Harrison joined her husband at the right hand of their Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007.

Mrs. Harrison was born April 7, 1930, in Woodstock, daughter of the late Mary Hollingsworth Cooley and Cecil F. Cooley. She was raised on the farm, where she was instilled with down home, country values. She was a graduate of Woodstock High School and Palmer’s Business College, a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and a retired employee of Central Virginia Credit Union.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 wonderful years, Gordon F. Harrison; two brothers, Charles Richard “Dick” Cooley and John Franklin “Johnny” Cooley.

Surviving are a son, Clay Harrison and wife Susan of Lynchburg; daughter, Vickie Harrison May and husband Gary Wright of Roanoke; three sisters, Dorothy Spicer and husband Dave of Charlottesville, Rebecca C. Wright of Earlysville and Betty Rhodes of Maurertown; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sharon Bacon and husband Wayne of Wichita, Kan.; three grandchildren, Allison and Caylyn Cruz and Mack Krebs; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was conducted Friday, Jan. 12, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church by Pastor Hank Boschen.

Paul Henry Heubusch

Paul Henry Heubusch, 81, died Dec. 18, 2006, at his home in Woodstock.

Mr. Heubusch was born in 1925, in Buffalo, N.Y., and moved to Virginia where he practiced law in the Northern Virginia area for over 30 years. He was a former councilman and town attorney for the town of Vienna. He was a retired officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve with the rank of commander and had served at sea during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Marion Alf Heubusch; sons, Jeffrey C. Heubusch of Oakton and Kevin P. Heubusch of Chicago, Ill.; daughters, Susan M. Heubusch of Paris, France, Patricia L. Heubusch of Woodstock and Elizabeth A. Benedetto of Star Tannery; and grandchildren, Marion A. Benedetto, Mary E. Heubusch, Paul J. Benedetto, Christine M. Heubusch, Clare A. Benedetto, Paul H. Heubusch and Henry D. Heubusch. He will be missed by all.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday, Jan. 13, at St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church by the Rev. Father William Ettner. Final interment will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Arlington National cemetery.

William George Lance

WINCHESTER- William George Lance, 63, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Lance was born May 17, 1943, in Aurora, W.Va., son of George Austin and Bertha Selders Lantz. He was a truck driver for William Hazel Co. and had worked for Culligan Water Conditioner for 24 years. He was a member of Winchester Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Sandra Janet Elsea Lance, whom he married Feb. 6, 1976, in Leesburg; daughter, Janet Jett of Strasburg; son, Dale Miller of Strasburg; two brothers, Howard Lance of North Carolina and Fred Lantz of Leesburg; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted Monday, Jan. 15, at Enders and Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, by the Rev. O.P. Hatfield. Burial was in Mountain Baptist Church cemetery, Clarke County.

Lee Ray Poehler

MCLEAN- Lee Ray Poehler, 75, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at Life Care Center of New Market.

Mr. Poehler was born June 20, 1931, in Indianapolis, son of the late Christian H. and Esther Palmer Poehler. He served in the National Guard for nine years and was employed as a security guard. He was a member of American Legion Post 177 in Fairfax.

Surviving are a brother, John E. Poehler of New Market; and a sister, Jo Derwent of Chesapeake.

Burial will be held at a later date in National Memorial Park at Falls Church.

Laurence Arthur “Larry” Ricker Sr.

TOMS BROOK - Laurence Arthur “Larry” Ricker Sr., 75, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Ricker was born Nov. 7, 1930, in Sharon, Vt., son of the late Harlie Clifton Ricker Sr. and Irva Allen Ricker. He was a retired, self-employed truck driver.

Surviving are his companion, Ellen Richard; two sons, Laurence A. “Butch” Ricker Jr. of Richmond and Kevin Ricker of Front Royal; daughter, Robin L. Dennis of Jackson, S.C.; sister, Mary Ann Sumner of Bridgewater Corner, Vt.; brother, Allen A. Ricker of Springfield, Mass.; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church cemetery, Toms Brook, with the Rev. James Baseler officiating.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg. The family will then meet at 1:45 p.m. at the cemetery.

Jean Cameron Mathewson Ortgies

Jean Cameron Mathewson Ortgies, 98, of Woodstock, formerly of Catonsville and Linthicum, Md., died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at a local nursing home.

Mrs. Ortgies was born March 25, 1918, in New York City, daughter of Charles Ellis Hitchins Mathewson and Jennie Cameron Dey Mathewson. She had been a teacher at Linthicum Elementary School for 17 years. She was a member of Linthicum Women’s Club, Kappa Delta Phi Teachers Sorority, League of Women voters and Barnard College Alumni Association. She was the wife of the late Howard Somerville Ortgies.

Surviving are a son, Howard Somerville Ortgies Jr. of Maurertown; two daughters, Jean “Robin” Ortgies Mayne of Fort Worth, Texas, and Gale Ortgies Johnk of Vienna, Austria; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Loudoun Park cemetery in Baltimore.
