Steward DuBois Moot

Steward DuBois Moot, 82, of Woodstock, died Oct. 10, 2006.

Mr. Moot was born Aug. 29, 1924, in Schenectady, N.Y., son of the late Richmond Dana Moot and Edith McCormack Moot. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He receive his B.A. from Harvard University and his J.D. from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He practiced law in Rochester, N.Y., where he met and married Helen Gavras, who passed away in 1991. He was active in the civil rights movements of the 1950s and 60s. He was also involved in church affairs, serving as an elder and session member at Third Presbyterian Church in Rochester, as well as stated clerk of the Genesee Valley Presbytery. He was a member of Woodstock Presbyterian Church. Among his personal interests and hobbies were politics, sailing, music and photography.

Since 2002, Mr. Moot has lived in Woodstock, residing at Craven Hall and later Adonai Gardens.

Surviving are a daughter, Cathryn Moot Newson of Bath, Maine; son, John Stewart Moot of Falls Church; grandchildren, Taylor, Ryan and Rebecca Moot; brother, Richmond D. Moot Jr. of Northfield, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Moot Fraser and brother, Charles Gordon Moot.

A memorial service was conducted Friday, Oct. 13 at Woodstock Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Lisa Webb.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodstock Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 152 East Court St., Woodstock, VA 22664.

Arrangements handled by Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock.

George Michael “Mike” McFarland

George Michael “Mike” McFarland, 59, of Wardensville, W.Va., died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. McFarland was born March 29, 1947, in Winchester, son of Audrey Dorsey McFarland of Frederick County and the late George W. McFarland. He had been employed by Crown, Cork and Seal. He was the husband of the late Vernie Oates McFarland.

Surviving with his mother are a son, Michael Shannon McFarland of Strasburg; five sisters, Sandra Stockard, Donna Lockhart, Brenda Cain, April Adams and Kelly Twigg, all of Frederick County; a brother, Thomas McFarland of Frederick County; and a grandson.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde “Rickey” McFarland.

A funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 at Michael R. Phelps and Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City, with Chaplain J. Leland Collins officiating.

The family will receive friends following Thursday’s service until 9 p.m.

Memorials may be made to North Mountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue, 186 Rosenberger Lane, Winchester, VA 22602.

Charles David Lear

MOUNT JACKSON – Charles David Lear, 31, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, in Mount Jackson.

Mr. Lear was born March 20, 1975, in Woodstock, son of Janet Louise Eaton Lear of Mount Jackson and the late Charles Alfred Lear. He was a member of Solomon Lutheran Church in Forestville and the New Market Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 4264.

Surviving with his mother is a sister, Karen Lambert of Mount Jackson.

A service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements handled by Dellinger Funeral Home in Mount Jackson.

Joseph A. LaPage

TIMBERVILLE – Joseph A. LaPage, 74, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. LaPage was born June 23, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., son of the late Joseph A. and Rose Alice Ross LaPage. He was a retired machinist from Kennametal Inc. He was a member of the U.S. Marines, the National Wildlife Conservation and of the Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Ada Pearl Miller LaPage, whom he married March 21, 1970; three stepdaughters, Sue Shank of Broadway, and Judy Stroop and Barbara Good, both of New Market; three stepsons, Ralph Riggleman, Jerry Riggleman and Jimmy Riggleman, all of Timberville; four half-sisters, Linda Marie Hutchison of Mount Morris, Ill., Laura Jean Scroppo of Lombard, Ill., Catherine Ann LaPage of Plains Field, Ill., and Carmel LaPage of Genoa City, Wis.; three half-brothers, Edwin LaPage of Wheaton, Ill., Robert Arthur LaPage of Mount Morris, Ill., and David Andrew LaPage of West Chicago, Ill.; 10 step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Glen Turner conducted the graveside funeral Sunday, Oct. 15 at the Mountain Grove cemetery in Fulks Run.

Richard Wesley Lam

TIMBERVILLE – Richard Wesley Lam, 57, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Lam was born July 21, 1949, in Harrisonburg, son of Gilmer Wesley and Janet Byrd Lam of Dayton. He taught for 30 years in the Shenandoah County school system at Woodstock Middle, Edinburg Elementary, W.W. Robinson, Triplett Middle and North Fork Middle schools. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, the National Education Association and Virginia Education Association. He served in the Air Force from 1969 to 1973.

Surviving with his parents are his wife, Diane Andes Lam; son, Brandon Lam of Timberville; daughter, Brianna Lam of Timberville; and brother, Michael Lam of Harrisonburg.

The Revs. Eric Wetzel and Larry Thompson conducted a graveside service Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Mount Olivet cemetery near Timberville. A memorial service was held Tuesday evening at Mount Olivet Church of the Brethren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richard W. Lam Technology Memorial Fund, c/o North Fork Middle School, 1018 Caverns Road, Quicksburg, VA 22847.

Sandra Lee Robertson Culler

Sandra Lee Robertson Culler, 65, of Keedysville, Md., went home to be with the Lord Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at her home.

Mrs. Culler was born July 10, 1941, in Cumberland, Md., daughter of the late Woodrow F. and C. Marie Alderton Robertson. She was a 1959 graduate of Boonsboro High School. She was a dedicated mother and homemaker and the administrative secretary of St. James Brethren Church, retiring in 2001 after 14 years of service. She was a member of St. James Brethren Church, where she taught the adult Sunday school class, led the senior citizens ministry and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society.

Surviving are her husband, Lynn Baker Culler, whom she married Aug. 31, 1960; one daughter, Melinda J. Starliper and husband Michael and grandchildren, Dustin M. and Taylor N. Starliper, all of Fairplay, Md.; one son, Douglas L. Culler and wife Lauren and grandchildren, Emma Kate and Mary Rose Culler, all of Woodstock; two brothers, Gary F. Robertson of LaVale, Md. and M. Leroy “Skip” Robertson of Pawcatuck, Conn.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Oct. 14 at St. James Brethren Church by the Rev. Brian H. Moore. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Colleen Hottle Owens Aldrich

STEPHENSON – Colleen Hottle Owens Aldrich, 76, left this earth, Heaven bound, on Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Aldrich was born June 8, 1930, in Winchester, daughter of the late Harry Franklin and Laura Lee Pierce Hottle. She was a homemaker and a former Avon representative. She was a long time, faithful member of Shenandoah Valley Baptist Church in Stephens City. She was the wife of the late Cassler William “Bill” Aldrich, who died March 31, 1986.

Surviving are a daughter, Donella A. Barberio of Winchester; son, Darius C. Aldrich, of Winchester; two brothers, Ralph Hottle of Richmond and Kenneth Hottle of Sidney, Ohio; four grandchildren, Serena D. Wood of Winter Haven, Fla., Jodi L. Miller of Strasburg, Kelly M. Frye of Middletown, and William C. Aldrich of Winchester; four great-grandchildren, Kyla K. Smith and Zachary J. Miller, both of Strasburg, Kiana C. Barberio and Caleb C. Frye, both of Middletown.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon A. Owens Wood; sister, Waneta Hottle McKee Hurst; two brothers, Raymond Hottle and Gene Hottle; and infant brothers, Carl and Lawrence Hottle.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, July 11, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Pastor Eric Farel officiating. Interment was in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County.

Lawrence Emmanuel Andes Sr.

Lawrence Emmanuel Andes Sr., 87, died Friday, June 23, 2006, at the home of his son, Larry Andes, in Huntingtown, Md.

Mr. Andes was born April 5, 1919, in Timberville, son of the late Emmanuel and Bernice Kesner Andes. He was a highly decorated Army veteran who served throughout World War II, receiving the Silver Star, Bronze Star, the French Croix De Guerre and the Purple Heart. He retired from the Railway Express Company in Washington, D.C. He lived briefly in Sharpsburg, Md., where he volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program. He was a lifelong member of the Brethren Church.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Olivia C. Boyd Andes and Irene Howard Andes.

Surviving are two sons, Lawrence Andes Jr. of Huntingtown, Md. and Michael Andes of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; three sisters, Martha Andes of Woodstock, Ava Tusing and Helen Foltz, both of Edinburg; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held June 28 at Lee Funeral Home in Owings, Md. Burial will be Aug. 14 in Arlington National cemetery.

Carrie Orndorff Beatley

STRASBURG – Carrie Orndorff Beatley, 81, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, at her home.

Mrs. Beatley was born June 30, 1925, in Shenandoah County, daughter of the late William and Myrtle Orndorff. She was a 1943 graduate of Strasburg High School and was a member of Lebanon Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church Women, Lutheran League, Quilters Group, and Women’s Bible Class.

Surviving are her husband, William “Loring” Beatley; a daughter, Brenda Gail Rose; and two grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Tuesday, July 11, at Lebanon Lutheran Church. Burial was in Gravel Springs cemetery.

Peter Nicholas Chaconas

NEW MARKET – Peter Nicholas Chaconas, 91, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Chaconas was born Nov. 22, 1914, in Washington, D.C., son of Nicholas Chaconas. He was an electrician for Pepco Electric Co. and was a Catholic.

Surviving are his wife, Marie V. Chaconas; two daughters, Patricia Allen of New Market and Suzanne Moore of Rockville, Md.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Monday, July 10, at Valley Funeral Chapel, Bowmans Crossing, by Father Paul Richardson. Burial was private.

Lonnie Franklin Eaton

NEW MARKET – Lonnie Franklin Eaton, 86, passed away Monday, July 10, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Eaton was born Sept. 9, 1919, in Rockingham County, son of the late Harley and Cora Eaton. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a well known Valley farmer and the owner of Eaton Dairy. He was a member of Solomon’s Lutheran Church at Quicksburg and had served for many years on the board of directors of Shenandoah’s Pride and Farm Credit Inc. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

On Dec. 23, 1939, he married Margaret Virginia Getz, who passed away on Jan. 8, 2004.

Surviving are a son, John H. Eaton and wife Mary of New Market; four grandchildren, Travis Eaton and wife Gina, Jason Eaton and wife Kim, Brent Eaton and wife Kina and Twilla Zirkle and husband Ross; eight great-grandchildren, Tyler Eaton, Matthew Eaton, Megan Eaton, James Eaton, Sarah Eaton, Drew Zirkle, Eric Zirkle and Erin Zirkle; a step great-granddaughter, Tiffany Keller; daughter-in-law, Paulette Eaton of New Market; a special caregiver, Mildred Wilson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Franklin Lee Eaton, on June 7, 1989. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, at Solomon’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Susan Lance and the Rev. Glen Turner officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mary Virginia Stickley Estep

STEPHENS CITY – Mary Virginia Stickley Estep departed this life on Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at her home.

Mrs. Estep was born Nov. 9, 1905, in Stephens City, daughter of the late Mary Evelyn Downing Stickley and Dr. Peter B. Stickley. She attended Marion College, earned her degree at State Teachers College (now James Madison University), and taught school in Stephens City and New Market. She was a long-standing member of Reformation Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school, was a member of the building committee and was active on the Alter Guild. She was a loyal supporter of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stephens City, where she was baptized, confirmed and married . She was a member of Loconocoa Garden Club and the Women’s Memorial Society in New Market. She was the wife of the late Harold Edwin Estep.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Downing, Courtney and Robert; and a sister, Heath Stickley.

Graveside services were conducted Saturday, July 8, at Emanuel cemetery, New Market.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Stephens City Fire and Rescue Squad, New Market Rescue Squad or the Women’s Memorial Society in New Market. Arrangements handled by Theis Funeral Chapel, New Market.
