Edward Carlton Fletcher Jr.

STEPHENS CITY – Edward Carlton Fletcher Jr., 29, died Sunday, July 2, 2006, in Rappahannock County.

Mr. Fletcher was born June 10, 1977, in Winchester, son of Edward Carlton Fletcher Sr. and Claudia Mae Carbaugh of Martinsburg, W.Va. He worked in the construction industry doing pool installations.

Surviving with his parents are a daughter, Kelsey Gillespie of Strasburg; and his grandmothers, Dorothy McFarland of Stephens City and Pearl Fletcher of Inwood, W.Va.

A graveside service was conducted Sunday, July 9, at Green Hill cemetery in Stephens City by the Rev. Jackie Battles.

Dorothy Esther Perkins Graves

HARRISONBURG – Dorothy Esther Perkins Graves was born Feb. 24, 1920, in Randolph, Iowa, daughter of the late Albert Leonard Perkins and Jessie Virginia Antrim Perkins. She graduated from Randolph High School, attended Glendale Junior College in Glendale, Calif. and Peru State Teachers College at Peru, Neb., where she met her future husband, Theodore William Graves. They were married Aug. 9, 1941, at Calvary Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. She began her teaching career in Iowa in a one-room schoolhouse and later earned her bachelor of arts in education from George Washington University. She continued teaching in Fairfax County and Lynchburg.

As a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, she held many offices. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Women’s Club, the American Association of University Women, several book clubs, the Bedford Garden Club, and helped to organize and was first president of Patrick Henry Women’s Auxiliary at Red Hill. She served for several years on the Bedford County School Board Advisory Council and was a literacy volunteer in both Bedford and Shenandoah counties.

Surviving with her husband are four sons, Theodore William Jr., Eugene Albert, Leland Edward and Reid Harvey; two sisters, Virginia Miller and Elizabeth Rawlins; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Saturday, July 8, at Meredith Chapel, Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community, in Harrisonburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rockingham Memorial Hospital Hospice, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Charles Albert “Varmit” Henry

STRASBURG – Charles Albert “Varmit” Henry, 77, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Henry was born June 22, 1929, in Pine Hills, Frederick County, son of the late Wesley W. and Evelyn Miller Good Henry. Along with his wife, he was the owner of Guard Hill Meats Inc. for 36 years. He was awarded the John Wesley Methodist Award and Man of the Year Award with the Reliance Men’s Group. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Front Royal, Strasburg Moose Lodge No. 403, and the Reliance United Methodist Men.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Jacquelin Wymer Henry; two daughters, Diane Miller and companion Sherwood Runion of Bowmans Crossing and Deborah Albright of Middletown; two sons, James Henry and wife Mary, Sammy Henry and wife Virginia, all of Middletown; son-in-law, Tommy Vickers; six brothers, Monroe “Buddy” Henry and wife Norma, Leroy Henry and wife Ann, all of Strasburg, Raymond “Bucky” Henry of Middletown, Richard Henry and wife Bonnie of Winchester, Jack Good of Pennsylvania and George Good of Florida; sister, Pearl Dicks and husband Harry of Buckton; a sister-in-law, Gerline Henry of Middletown; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Barbara Vickers; son-in-law, Thomas Albright Sr.; brothers, John W. Henry and Herbie Good; and sister, Pauline Ridgeley.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, at Reliance United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Sharon Forbes and Bill Wade officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Henry, Michael Moore, David Kaufman, Thomas Miller Jr., Jim Adams, Jason Nicola, Thomas Albright Jr., Jeffrey Albright, Michael Henry, Eddie Whetzel and Chris Owens. Honorary pallbearers will be the Reliance United Methodist Men’s Group.

Memorials may be made to Reliance United Methodist Church, Reliance Road, Reliance, VA 22649 or to Middletown Fire Department, P.O. Box 111, Middletown, VA 22645.

Martin David “Shorty” Hess

BRIDGEWATER – Martin David “Shorty” Hess, 79, died Friday, July 7, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Hess was born Oct. 28, 1926, in Augusta County, son of the late Albert David and Eliza Virginia Eavers Hess. He was a farmer and worked for Westinghouse in Verona for 15 years, Greyhound Bus Terminal in Harrisonburg for two years, and Michael Construction in Mount Solon for 10 years. He was a member of Spring Creek Church of the Nazarene. He served in the Army and was a member of the Collins-Hughes VFW Post No. 9636. He was the last survivor of his immediate family.

Surviving are his wife, Beulah Fay Simmons, whom he married June 28, 1974; stepdaughter, Juanita Dove of Singers Glen; stepson, Allen Curry of New Market; four step-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday, July 9, at Spring Creek Church of the Nazarene by the Revs. Tony Martin and Carrol Edge. Burial was in Sangerville Church cemetery.

James Milton “Jim” Hodson Jr.

CLEARBROOK – James Milton “Jim” Hodson Jr., 70, died Monday, July 3, 2006, at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Hodson was born Nov. 28, 1935, in Shenandoah County, son of the late James Milton and Eva Arlene Smith Hodson. He was a graduate of Strasburg High School, a Navy veteran and a computer technician for the U.S. government at Mount Weather. He was a member of Clearbrook Presbyterian Church and former member of Shenandoah Valley Runners Club and Apple Capitol Barbershop Chorus.

Surviving are his wife, Laurie Jean Evans Bowers Hodson; stepdaughter, Libby Haymaker of Winchester; two stepsons, Joseph Bowers of Louisa and Terry Bowers of Martinez, Ga.; three sisters, Joyce Hollar and Barbara Neff, both of Oranda, and Linda Lineburg of Stephens City; two brothers, Richard Hodson and Fred Hodson, both of Strasburg; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick H. Hodson; and a brother, Donald Hodson.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Howard I. Holler

EDINBURG – Howard I. Holler, 84, died Friday, June 30, 2006, at Eden Pines in Strasburg.

Mr. Holler was born Dec. 1, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Harry H. and Martha Taylor Holler. He was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard and had been a power dispatcher for Con Edison in New York City. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 199 in Woodstock. Surviving are his wife, Joan B. Holler; son, John H. Holler of Dove Canyon, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lee F. Holler.

The funeral service was conducted Thursday, July 6, at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Edinburg, by the Rev. Timothy E. Teates. Burial was private. Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork St., Winchester, VA 22801.

Betty Jane Keller

Betty Jane Keller, 82, of Woodstock, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Skyline Terrace Nursing Home in Woodstock.

Mrs. Keller was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Glen Echo, Md., daughter of the late Edgar B. and Rebecca Johanna Carroll Ryon. She was a graduate of Toms Brook High School, a homemaker and former bookkeeper for Center Drugs in Woodstock. She was a member of St. John Bosco Roman Catholic Church in Woodstock, the Woodstock American Legion Auxiliary and Woodstock Moose Lodge.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Keller Schmidt.

Surviving are her husband, P.N. “Buck” Keller; four daughters, Natalie Chaput of California, Robyn Giordani of Oklahoma, Paula Berchdorff and Regina Reynard, both of Woodstock; two sisters, Mary Sager of Front Royal and Doris Mulvanity of Texas; eight grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and one step great-granddaughter.

A graveside service was conducted Monday, July 10, at Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock, by Father Ettner.

Virginia Ann McInturff

Virginia Ann McInturff, 63, of Woodstock, died June 29, 2006.

Mrs. McInturff was born Aug. 25, 1942, in Winchester, daughter of the late Robert Cornelius and Mary Elizabeth Eagle Jasper. She was a member of Oak Level United Methodist Church.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday, July 8, at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock, by the Rev. Sherry Waddell. Burial was private.

Kathy Elaine Brewer Potter

STRASBURG – Kathy Elaine Brewer Potter, 51, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006, in Winchester Medical Center.

Ms. Potter was born Aug. 3, 1954, in South Carolina, daughter of Rachel McLain Brewer of Anderson, S.C. and the late William C. Brewer. She was employed by DuPont for 29 years.

Surviving with her mother are three children, Jennifer Elaine Worth of Winchester, Leslie Inez Shaw and husband Michael of Maurertown, and Buddy Worth Jr. and wife Heather of Strasburg; 10 grandchildren, Kaylin, Kayla, Tyson, Lyrik, Daniel, Alliyah, Landon, Alexis, Joshua and Colby; two sisters, Brenda Hardwick of Conway, S.C., and Lynn Lowery of Greer, S.C.; and three brothers, Earl Brewer of Gallatin, Tenn., Danny Brewer and Randy Brewer, both of Mullins, S.C.

A funeral was conducted Friday, July 7, at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, Winchester, by the Revs. Earl Brewer and Ray Jay Morton. Burial was in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Joshua Michael Schmiedicke

STRASBURG – Joshua Michael Schmiedicke, 4, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Warren Memorial Hospital.

Joshua was born July 26, 2001, in Front Royal, son of Andrew T. and Regina E. Doman Schmiedicke of Strasburg. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

Surviving with his parents are two brothers, Caleb Schmiedicke and Thomas Schmiedicke; three sisters, Rose Schmiedicke, Marygrace Schmiedicke and Joan Schmiedicke; grandparents, John and Michele Doman and Tom and Candy Schmiedicke; and great-grandmothers, Helen Doman and Joanne Kane.

A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted Tuesday, July 11, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Front Royal by the Rev. Edward Hathaway. Burial was in Panorama Memorial Gardens.

Berlin Elwood Smoot

Berlin Elwood Smoot, 71, of Woodstock, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Smoot was born March 2, 1935, in Woodstock, son of the late Charles Milton and Ada Virginia Miller Smoot. He was a 1953 graduate of Woodstock High School. He retired in 1996 after 31 years as service manager for Grubbs Chevrolet in Woodstock and worked part-time at Wal-Mart in Woodstock. He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Friends of Fine Horses, The Chapelaires and The Happenings gospel singing groups and the Shenandoah Benders. He was a former member of St. Luke-Fairview Ruritan Club and the St. Luke Cardinals baseball team. He was an avid horse lover.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Ann Miller Smoot.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys E. Smoot; two daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” Smoot Grandstaff and Lorrie Ann Smoot Dickinson, both of Edinburg; two stepdaughters, Kathleen M. Martin of Stephens City and Sandra E. Burner of Baltimore; two stepsons, Geoffrey M. Baumer of California and Charles Baumer of Ohio; a granddaughter, Andrea “Andi” Maree Dickinson of Edinburg; six step-grandchildren, John Burner, Carl Burner, Adam Burner, Donald “Donnie” Caison, Jacob Martin and Serenity Martin; and three step great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Friday, July 7, in Sunset View Memorial Gardens, Woodstock, by the Revs. C. Bernard Troutman and George Bowers.

Gloria Jean Bernard

EDINBURG – Gloria Jean Bernard, 72, died Monday, June 26, 2006.

Mrs. Bernard was born Nov. 29, 1933, in Superior, Wis., daughter of the late Fred and Florence Sharpe Swanson. She was a graduate of the Wisconsin Indian Head Technical College and received the rating of certified professional secretary. She worked for Capitol Records in Los Angeles, St. Luke Hospital, University of Minnesota and the Bureau of Mines, all in Duluth, Minn.

Surviving are her husband, Roy Bernard of Edinburg; brother, Byron Swanson and wife Mary Kay of Duluth, Minn.; six nieces and nephews; and 11 great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be private.
